I tried barrio queen about 4 years ago when I first moved to Arizona. I initially ordered the camerones Al mojo de ajo (garlic shrimp) and was extremely disappointed. The service was fine but the shrimp was very lemony with almost no garlic flavor. This made me avoid barrio queen for a few years until recently. My mother and I were looking for a quick bite while in Tempe marketplace and figured we might as well try our luck and go back. Firstly it was Memorial Day but the service was excellent and our server predicted our needs before we even had to ask. The food came out fast and was very good. My mom got the chicken chimichanga and I got the enchilada trio. Both dishes were great as well as the rice and beans. It's super cute on the inside and very clean. We wanted to enjoy this great weather while it lasts so we chose to eat at the patio at Bario Queen Tempe marketplace. This is one of our regular hangout spots that we frequent and one might think that 5-stars may be a little over the top for a local chain restaurant located in an outdoor mall. Bario Queen Tempe deserves the 5 stars for being consistently consistent at delivering great all around experience time and time again. The staff were warm and welcoming. The food was fantastic and fresh. The table side guacamole with pomegranate is a MUST TRY! We tried a variety of Tacos and the Cochinita pibil. All were delicious and flavorful. The service was excellent and the patio was comfortable with ample shade provided by large umbrellas. It is so important to have repeated, good experiences at the same place! Great job Bario team! 3.5/5 Dined here recently for dinner as a large party on the patio outside. Some of the chairs had bird droppings on them on both the backs and the seats which doesn't inspire me to want to dine on the patio again if the chairs aren't cleaned regularly. We had the guacamole to start with and I ordered the chicken mole enchiladas. The guacamole is prepared in front of you and athough there is cilantro in it (cilantro is my food enemy), it's mixed up enough that I didn't really notice the taste of it too much. Would I pay $16+ for it in the future? Probably not but it did taste pretty good. Honestly, guacamole isn't that hard to make at home so it wouldn't be worth the price point for me. The chicken mole enchiladas were well prepared and exactly as advertised. I requested them with no cilantro and they were happy to oblige. I had two of the enchiladas before getting a little tired of the taste of the mole so got the rest to go. The rice and beans that came with it were well prepared. Service was very friendly but was slow to get us things we needed. We had to remind the server about food and other items. I think they were short staffed that day so I think that was the cause for some of the lag in service. read more

We were in the area visiting and stopped by this area to check it out and do some shopping. Decided to have lunch & dropped by with our friends and our kids. We were promptly seated after entering and the restaurant was bright & decor was nice. The waiter was helpful & able to answer our questions and accommodate our requests. We ordered bean and cheese burrito with fries, chicken tacos with rice and chicken tenders with fries for the kids. It all comes with a drink & dessert! (Such a treat for the little ones). For the adults we had the combination fajitas, which comes with steak, shrimp and chicken on top of all the peppers and onions. It also had a side of rice & beans and tortillas. Such great flavors and very tasty. Our friends had their tacos and also enjoyed it. We also had drinks and shots and this place definitely nailed all the drinks. I've tried Barrio Queen once before at the Phoenix location and wasn't very impressed, so I wasn't sure what to expect this time. Maybe I ordered the wrong thing back then or maybe this Tempe location is just better because dinner was delicious. The chips and salsa were great, and the salsa had a nice kick. My steak tacos were packed with flavor and loaded with meat. My drink was also really good... strong, and fruity. Today I went Barrio Queen and I ordered Shrimp Enchiladas and they gave me 3 rolled tortillas w three grilled hard cooked shrimp on top and the sauce was terrible and nothing had flavor . Been craving a shrimp taco, and noticed this location listed on Yelp's list of shrimp tacos in Tempe as I was in the area for my hair appointment. For a Sunday evening, they weren't too busy and I was seated immediately. It did take some time for my server to greet me, but I think they only had one server on for both inside and the patio. I wasn't too fussed as it gave me time to check out the menu as it was my first time to this chain of restaurants. Plus, I enjoyed looking at the decor as the restaurant is well decorated with sugar skulls. When my tacos (camarón asado and pescado asado) arrived with my sides (calabacitas and rice), I had no silverware and had to wait about ten minutes for my server to return to ask. I tried to overlook and chalk it off to being split between too many tables, but it also took over 10 minutes for a box when I requested. When the check arrived, I wasn't sure if you pay at the table or up front, so after about 5-10 minutes of my card sitting on the receipt, I went up front. Awkwardly found out you do in fact pay at the table and the server said they were busy cashing out a table on the patio. Always feel bad, but I had waited long enough to doubt where you pay. If the food is stellar, I can overlook the service being a little less than par due to staffing. Sadly, I didn't find anything special about either taco. I ended up getting Rubio's the next day and preferred theirs. Though, I'll say the chips and salsa were delicious. Perhaps I'll try again in the future as it could be an off night, and I've heard friends say they like this chain. read more

Nothing about this place was impressive. We all ordered lemonade which tasted only like syrup, thick and unpleasant. I ordered "the queen", which in my opinion was a warmed tortilla and cheeses. No flavor just tortilla and cheese. The sauce didn't even do it justice bc the sauce was also bland. The elote was presented very nice but after the first scoop the rest is submerged in liquid. Our napkins were moldy and spoiled smelling and it made all of our stomachs turn. Looking back I wish we would've paid for our drinks and left without ordering. Our server was nice but not very attentive. The music was entertaining, at least. Very disappointing to have spent $80+ a tip to only leave hungry. We will not be returning. read more

Barrio Queen is a fantastic Mexican restaurant with okay service. First, I love the aesthetic. Stark white walls allowed every bit of color to pop. Murals and colored glass was captivating. This was far from bland or stale aesthetics. My friend and I were seated toward the back half of the restaurant. I noted the table density was quite comfortable. Handed an illegible menu I was a bit surprised that they kept these in circulation. Where people had held the menu on the sides the ink had faded to the point it wasn't possible to read. I had my phone handy so I could pull the menu up there. I ordered the Queen enchilada with added shrimp. Despite a cream sauce and three different cheeses it was surprisingly not super rich. The three enchiladas were perfect size, lots of shrimp, and a good balance with the cheeses as the slightly sharper goat cheese contrasted nicely with the cream sauce. The beans and rice were also fantastic. I was impressed with the portion sizes because while they were filling they also weren't so much I felt I couldn't finish. The service was the one meh. Our waiter was a solemn, quiet gentleman who performed his tasks routinely. Never once did he smile or show any real customer service skills. Normally we go to the location in Scottsdale, but we were in Tempe and this is where my son wanted to go! We got right in on a Thursday evening! The place was packed on their amazing out door patio, so we didn't think we would get in! But they had some indoor seating! The waitress was the best, so friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about the menu! I love asking what the most popular items are and she literally told me " let me tell you what the most popular item is in each section, along with her favorite items" Waw that's service!! The food was out quickly despite how busy they were! I ordered the queen enchiladas My son got the carne asada burrito Both were great, so flavorful and delicious. The ambiance is lively, loud, Mexican music in the background. It can be hard to hear the people across the table but the ones close I had no problem talking with. Ordered the 3 for $15 tacos with an horchata. They tasted good and were a good size since we also order appetizers: Mexican Street Corn, Barrio Guacamole and their free chips with salsa. Horchata was delicious! The service was delayed but it may be because every time you order guacamole the server brings out a rolling cart and makes it in front of your table. We were looking forward to trying this place out after talking to friends in the Tempe area. Their recommendation was a good one as we enjoyed our dinner at Barrio Queen. I decided to go with something different from what I typically like and I was glad I did. I went with the Chiles En Nogada. It was such a flavorful dish with the sweetness of the fruit with the savory of the cream sauce and the poblano and chicken. It was a great dish. What was cool is the bartender shared the story on how the dish came to be many years ago in Mexico as a celebration for a visiting Pope. My husband went with one of his favorites - Chile Verde. He wasn't disappointed as it had great flavor with tender meat. The restaurant ambiance is bright and festive. We enjoyed our meal and drinks at the bar. The bartenders were friendly and attentive. My good friend took me to Barrio Queen for my Birthday, which was on the day we went. I ordered three different tacos and they were delicious!! He look and feel of the restaurant is very relaxed, clean, and loved the decor. Unfortunately I only have negative to say about our server. She may have been having a bad day, I don't know. I asked my girlfriend if she said something to her before I got there and she said, no. We both always said please and thank you. She never smiled, never asked us if we needed anything, no refill on our drinks, and didn't ask my friend if she wanted to take her leftovers home. We tried to flag her down three times and she even looked are way, turned her back in the kitchen. We just asked another her server if she could please bring us hot sauce. We didn't let it ruin our day and we would return, but if I would not go to her section. She made us both feel like we did something wrong and that's not right. read more

I have been to Barrio Queen in the past and it simply feels like things have changed. Previously my tacos were juicy and flavorful. This time my carnitas didn't even come with a lime, my husband's torta was dry, missing condiments, my daughter's steak was lacking flavor and was dry, and overall everything felt basic and not worth the money we paid. $22 for a taco combo platter of this size and quality felt like robbery, it is sad when at a Mexican food restaurant my son's chicken strips were the highlight.
