The burgers here are really good once you try them. Cooked fresh with fresh ingredients in a method that gives it downhome taste and feel. Also, prepared to your liking, rare to well! The only down side I can see is the prices. Almost 5 dollars for just a burger, any size, is unreal! But, the quality makes up for it. My mistake this should have been for the place in Redding We took the burger out of the wrapper and it was a sorry sight. Very flat despite the tomato an onion. The burger was cooked right but tasteless. The extra mayonnaise helped but a McDonald or Burger King burger costs a lot less and tastes better. They should toast the buns, grill the onions and put on a tasty dressing. The french fries were pretty good. read more

We stopped here on a whim when passing through California on our road trip back home. Though it's small inside, the ladies who work there are some of the nicest people. I got a big burger with cheese (you can do American or pepper jack) all of the fixins (except tomato) ... the burger was well done but not burnt, juicy but not greasy (I was in heaven by the second bite! The fries seemed home cut and fried, they were crispy and cooked to order. This seems to be a popular place with the locals, and everything is cooked to order, from the patties to the buns (grilled) and fries... it takes about 10-15 mins, or you can call ahead to decrease the wait time in the resturant. Love the food always have. Staff is hit or miss.Last couple times I've called in food at Anderson Bartels the woman puts me on "hold" for 5-10 minutes. Not sure if she knows how to put somebody on hold, because you can hear her taking orders, then finally getting back to the phone 10 minutes later after she's clearly forgot about it. I work in food I know in-house customers come first. But come on lady. This has happened 3-4 times now . Most recent time I went there, I ordered one burger and Fry, waited 40 minutes. 40 MINUTES?!?! My wife really enjoy this place but some how the food recently has been getting really messed up. A few weeks ago I had an order where the fries were so over done my wife got sick. Today I ordered a garden burger with No mayonnaise same as always but some how that ment i only want mayonnaise. I am vegan and I don't eat animal products so I had to throw it away. Please try harder to listen to your customers and remember your customers. It might help if you repeat the order back to your customers to make sure you heard them correctly. read more

OMG Bartel's burger where have you been all my life? And why do you have to be located in BFE? From the highway, this place looks completely closed, and extremely sketch. From the inside, this place is a time warp to 1965: orange seats, wood paneling, and surly hair-netted grill lady who has probably been flipping burgers since the place first opened. Outside, a pickup truck belonging to 2 fellow diners with a dead deer in the back. It's that kind of place. There are only a few items on the menu (I'm sure they were doing this way before this was the cool thing to do). I've only ordered the cheeseburger. One bite of that burger, perfectly cooked, just enough lettuce, tomatoes and onions, with a soft, yelt melty, bun that doesn't crumble in your hands -- and I've never wanted anything else. Before the bistro/gourmet/black angus/avocado with sprouts burgers/sliders became all the rage, there was Bartels old-fashioned style burger. Hopefully this place has another 40 years of life left because I have yet to find any burger in Cali that rivals Bartel's classic cheeseburger. read more

Went by yelp reviews but I shoulda gone by my gut instinct and stopped at Nicks Grill on 299 because I did on a return trip and the great service there and great GRILLED burgers hit the spot that Bartels didn't. After reading other yelpers reviews I have to pause for a minute. What did I miss? Was this the same place I went to a few weeks back? But indeed it was the orange cheese machine with the only mighty thing about the place being the attitudes of the fine establishment. Been coming here for the past, oh, as long as I can remember, so like in the womb, lol. The burgers have always been pretty good, though over the years I've noticed a slow decline in portions & the care they take in making one's food... messier, sloppier, skimpier, etc. The flat personalities, bordering on bad attitudes, are nothing new, and often it just depends on who's working. Doesn't bother me one bit, I don't eat out to find new friends, hah. Pretty sure it's mostly nostalgia that brings people back over & over again, despite the mediocrity. I only give Bartell's a 3-star rating because though they do have decent hamburgers they're living on their reputation now in the prices are exorbitant if what you pay you think the Ambiance would be a little better I think for what they charge for hamburgers the environment should be a little better read more

On our way out of the mountains usually any burger will do. Well this place was slow, overpriced with small(cold)portions.

They were great.. but now... it's terrible. They have switched their patties to processed meat pucks, not fresh hamburger like they used to have. It tastes like processed meat, too. I looked at the patty and sure enough.. it had the stamped out dots and the pressed edges classic of frozen junk. The onions had a terrible cleanser taste.. like they didn't rinse their stainless steel containers that they'd soaked in dish soap. And, to top it all off, the individual who took my order was less than friendly. Never again. Sad.. it was our favorite burger joint. read more

We came in with 7 kids. The young woman behind the counter did a great job keeping track of everyone's order. The food came very quickly, I was startled how fast it came. The fries were excellent, the burgers were a good size and tasted great. If you don't prefer mustard make sure to tell them to hold it. Soda refills are free for everyone, kids meals too. read more

I had gotten 2 meals earlier tonight, customer service wasn't bad, the gal that took our order was friendly and even offered refills before we left. The cook, however, looked very annoyed that we were there. The patties were frozen, not fresh, although still moist, they did not taste good at all. The veggies were soggy. I got the grilled chicken, the chicken had very little flavor, and my boyfriend got the giant burger, which had absolutely no flavor. After about 5 hours, both of us are sick after eating this food. The French fries and soda will be the only this I will eat if I come back. Overall, customer service was a 4.5, burgers 1, fries and drinks 4.5. But burgers were what we wanted, i guess that's what we got, but very terrible burgers. read more
