Bruce was not only very intelligent when he was working my E36, but he was also very sweet and honest. He charges $150/hr for labor but he charged me $40 because it only took him 30 mins to fix a stupid rubber grommet that had me stranded on the freeway due to its age. If I could give this place ZERO stars I would. I'd read such good reviews, I decided to go in and inquire about having my BMW serviced. I got there and "Bruce" was talking to another mechanic. He never acknowledged my presence, nor did he say, "I'll be with you in a minute." Instead he kept talking like I wasn't there. Finally the other mechanic asked if I needed help & he pointed at Bruce. I told Bruce that I wanted to speak with someone about having my car serviced. Before I could finish speaking he cut me off and quite curtly said, "As you can see I've got a yard full of cars. I'm by myself, call me Monday or something." He then went back to talking. I looked around and all I saw were old broken down rusty cars that looked like they hadn't been driven in years. I was so stunned that I just walked away. If he's that rude & dismissive to potential customers, I wouldn't dare trust him with my car. The positive reviews left here must be from friends & family. I'll keep looking for a mechanic that has basic decency & manners to give my $$$ to. My advice is for you to skip this rat hole. Funny how things work. I was actually looking for a mobile mechanic to come to my house because my e92 BMW had a serpentine belt issue. Bruce does not offer mobile service, but after speaking with him for less than 5 minutes he was able to guide me over the phone and I removed the tensioner pulley my self. WOW!! Owner seems like a nice guy but told me he found a bolt (in the oil pan? or somewhere in or near my engine) during a regular oil change. He told me the bolt looked like a cylinder head bolt. I was suspicious, as you have to remove the valve cover in order to see the cylinder head bolts and he did not do this, so how would he know for sure? My car was not experiencing any shaking or anything that would indicate a cylinder head bolt was missing such as an oil leak. In any case, some other car repair I needed confirmed that I had ALL of my cylinder head bolts and this guy was full of crap. Can't say for sure, but perhaps he was trying to run a scam on me? Bruce is amazing. My wife's 7 Series was not starting, and in an attempt to help, Bruce referred me to a dealer rather than bullsh** me into a bill. With the assistance of Brian from West Hills Towing, we figured out it was a battery that had long since past its prime (like me). In short, Bruce replaced the battery and a few fuses when I was literally prepared to scrap the car and buy a new one. Bruce Barthel is the best deal around regarding BMW repair. He is not only an aficionado and enthusiast, he is easy to deal with, and usually charges less than expected. He will focus on the customer's needs without overcharging by adding more repairs to the bill. Tell him what you want and he does it. I've been to his shop dozens of times and knowing his shop rate, I will estimate about what the bill should be. He is usually 10-20% less. He stands behind his work. Anything goes bad (rare, but it happens) he fixes it for no extra cost. I even buy my auto parts through him because he has better prices than the local auto parts stores and they are top quality parts- German made by BMW approved or recommended OEMs. One of the other things that I like is the quality control he has. As example, his mechanics MUST use a torque wrench when reassembling. Even the wheel bolts are hand torqued to specs. They can do other cars as well, especially if it's a basic item like tune up or brakes, so if you have a Chevy truck that needs a drive shaft or new radiator they will happily repair it too. read more
