Bartlett Tree Experts in Concord, CA did a great job on fertilizing and pruning my birch trees! I was impressed when the Bartlett truck rolled up to my house right on time; and Ryan Lee's thoughtful observation and review with his crew before the pruning began. I thought 8 am might be a bit early for power tools and chipper noise in the neighborhood, but the Bartlett crew was so quiet as they diligently trimmed with hand saws and pole trimmers. It wasn't until about 9:30 when the chipper was turned on to grind the limbs and clean up the yard--a very thoroughly clean up I might add. We used Bartlett for years and were always pleased with their service, particularly their knowledge in helping us understand what our trees needed and why. Recently, I called the Concord office, made an appointment and received an email confirming the date and time. No one showed up. No one called or texted. An hour after their arrival-window expired, I called them. After a lot of ringing, voicemail kicked in. I agreed to approximately $300 worth of shrub spraying and they added on the last page of the contract over $700 of tree pruning without my knowledge. I wasn't sure if about Bartlett given the low-starred reviews. Unfortunately based on my own experience I need to agree with the lower end of the spectrum. I had been quoted a high rate for a single tree pruning, yet I agreed on the terms and signed the contract. The outcome is that after the contract was signed I didn't hear from them for two weeks... not even an acknowledgment of the contract being received. What made it worst is that when I finally wrote to them to rescind the contract, I was emailed by their customer support, which very kindly asked me for feedback as they 'want to make sure that the matter is addressed'. After I spent even more time providing feedback, I realized that I was emailing an AI bot. No one really cares These guys don't need your business as it seems to me they already have enough of it. Did not show up for scheduled work several times. When they did show up they did not perform the work we agreed on but still sent me an invoice for it. I had to call them several times to point this out and they just ended up sending me an invoice for the same amount of money, even though the work they performed was much less labour intensive. TL;DR: Bartlett didn't take responsibility for the damage they did to our trees, after I asked them to stop trimming them so heavily. Details: We hired Bartlett to trim 3 willow acacia trees in front of our house as we prepared to list it for sale. We also hired them to prune two eucalyptus trees in front of our neighbor's home, for aesthetics and improved views. They were the least expensive bid we received, and unfortunately I ignored poor reviews of their work online. Witnessing that their crew had very heavily pruned the first 2 of the 3 willow acacia's (inconsistent with the goal of listing for sale in just a few weeks), I asked their crew leader to less heavily prune the 3rd tree. They went ahead and pruned it even MORE heavily than the first 2, deciding it was more important to achieve symmetry than to keep foliage on it. 4 weeks later and the tree remains nearly barren, and an eye-sore in front of our for-sale home. I asked Bartlett not to charge us for their services, escalated to their regional VP, and they declined. I'm posting here so others might avoid the same mistake. They earn 2 stars because they did nice work on the eucalyptus trees, and to show that I'm not a ranting internet commenter. read more

Dangerous, disastrous, financially 700 % expensive than others, failed to honor liability for damage done at the property. Paid nearly 50,000 (fifty thousand dollars) to cut 4 tree and trim 5 trees. Each tree trimmed end up going dead then forced to get it taken down. One bad trim caused 2 feet x 25 feet piece falling on house roof. Their workers took out on house back yard bringing a stranger walking inside the house thus jeopardizing my life and they refused to put back fence. Fence on house front broken by their bu ket vehicle and they never fixed it. Bucket vehicle broke side walk and they did not fixed it. read more

My neighbors hired these guys to trim some large trees in their backyard. Bartlett decided it was ok to drop the heavy branches into our backyard on top of our smaller trees, breaking several branches. When asked to be careful the foreman chose to engage in a nasty argument that escalated into harassment. They also blocked our driveway, and part of the street without permits causing the street sweepers to skip our entire block. When Bartlett left they also left behind all the leaves that were not able to be swept by street cleaners. We picked up a large bag of debris that was left behind. I recommend contacting Davey Tree Experts if you want to avoid a lot of upset neighbors after your trees are trimmed. read more

We have lived on the same property for over 30 years and we used to hire Bartlett Tree Experts, but over the last several years they have done nothing but given us attitude ("oh that work is not possible with our equipment"..."I know what I'm talking about, you don't"..."why don't you just leave the tree as is and see what happens"...) and given us estimates 3 times the price of other experts. It's unfortunate that they have changed both their workers and their approach to their clientele. We won't be calling them any more. read more

I have some trees in my front yard that were in need of pruning. I called Bartlett and they sent a representative out to inspect what needed to be done and faxed me an estimate a few days later. The price seemed reasonable so I set up an appointment to have the work done. The day of the appointment the workers were supposed to show up at 9am. After nobody showed up by 10, I had to make several phone calls to find out if/when they were going to show up always being told that they were "on the way". The workers finally showed up at noon - 3 hours after the appointed time without any sort of explanation or apology. They couldn't even be bothered to call me to let me know they were going to be late and it was up to me to call them to find out what was going on. My entire morning was wasted waiting for these clowns. The trees were trimmed but nothing like what I expected - a real hack job. I guess the upside is that they will eventually grow back. So TERRIBLY disappointed. My clients have worked with them for years. In November I contacted Bartlett because we had a notice from the city that our tree needed to clear some electrical wires. I was out of state at the time and we had a month before some other work was being done and we'd be fined if it wasn't completed by then. I spoke to the same person each time, and was told different things each phone call, that he had to visit and then give an estimate, then because I was away they had to email me something to sign before he could come out, then I waited a week for the email, then called, then they didn't need anything. By end of Thanksgiving I said if they couldn't do it I really needed to try to look for someone else, but I was told Juan would be told that day. It literally got to the day I was told Juan would be going to the house, and I clarified didn't they say two visits, one to look and another to do the work, and isn't this late? The lady I'd had 5 conversations with didn't seem to recall what she'd said. With three days to spare, I finally went a LITTLE nuts and got a callback from Juan, whom I've met before. Intensely condescending, casually telling me there was never any way this work could have been done on time because he was "one month ahead" which I realized he meant "one month behind". Then he said he'd been out of town. I asked if the woman taking his calls is an answering service because not once was I ever told any of this. Juan seemed bored and irritated, had no suggestions. Didn't actually tell me to fuck myself, but from the attitude he may as well have. There has been no issue with the WORK. The issue is with terrible communication and really extreme unprofessionalism. When you schmuck up, you admit to it. And even when you DON'T, you should ACT like you care about your clients. FORTUNATELY I found a terrific arborist who was happy, grateful, did a wonderful job, and acted like a professional. Lesson learned. read more

I called them back 3 times, the manager was always out. i never got a call back from them. I also called and said to call me if they did not want to do my job so I wasn't wasting time. They did a fine job, but it was a simple job so it didn't require a lot of skill. The bill I received from them a week later was high, but I blamed myself for not getting a firm price upfront. When I moved into my new home in Cole Valley I had two large cedar trees that were covered in ivy and needed to be removed. I contacted Bartlett because of my past history with them. They were able to come out within a week of my call and give me a written quote, which was great EXCEPT the quote from Bartlett was 4 times higher than the 3 other bids I received from qualified arborists after receiving Bartlett's quote. The arborist I used was fully insured and had outstanding reviews on Yelp and the BBB. My advice to anyone needing tree service is to do your homework on pricing. Bartlett is a big corporation and you pay A LOT for their service. Also pay attention to their yelp reviews from other customers. I ended up saving over $13,000 by going with another company and couldn't be happier with the result. *** Update on 9/29/16 Mark, thank you for responding to my yelp review. Actually your arborist was almost 20 minutes late to the appointment and stayed exactly 30 minutes. My intent was always to remove the dead trees, not just remove the Ivy so I'm sorry you were misinformed about the details of the meeting. Unlike other services, Bartlett always did a nice job and never butchered the tree. The city now takes care of the street trees; otherwise, we'd be hiring them forever. Michael Moore from Bartlett helped me with a tree replacement for our garden. He carefully researched the best type, given the soil we have, and came up with a lovely suggestion. The tree he found for me is perfect. His crew planted the tree and it's thriving. He gave me lots of good advice about watering and general care for not only this tree but for the garden. Not only did Bartlett wake me with chainsaws after they promised to arrive at a reasonable time, they breached their promise to allow me to keep the firewood & chips from a dead tree on my property that i watered for 1/4 century, claiming MY tree "was promised to someone else"! Plus, they left a dead 10ft tree sitting next to the large one for me to take down myself, even though i have a torn shoulder.
