My daughter and I stopped by for an early dinner after school. We were early, so one of the first ones dining. We ordered the margarita pizza for my daughter, and she thought it was very well made. I had pasta bolognese and it was a good dish. Our server was Giuseppe. Such a sweetheart! I think my daughter and I enjoyed conversing with him as much as we enjoyed the food. Tonight we had a very bad experience and disappointment: the pizza and service were terrible! We will never and ever come back again!!! Our pizza boxes were filled with garbage, as we arrived home we have noticed and called rightaway, pizza's ingredients were not fresh and the dough was hard as wood!!! We asked for the bill before leaving got the receipt with the amount, when I gave my credit card, got another bill with a different amount then!! And they never apologized for that!!! I read about this place back in March on BoroMag.com and have been wanting to try it. We came on a Friday night with couple friends. I like the exposed brick wall in the dinning area. The server was nice and really friendly. For appetizer, we tried the specials for the night. Grilled octopus, juicy and tender. Burrata cheese and prosciutto. We also shared the Boscaiolo pizza which was pretty good. For main dish, I had the special Gnocchi with truffle (not too overwhelm and overpower the pasta which i liked). My husband had the black squid ink pasta with seafood, tasty but the pasta was a bit overcooked. Our friends ordered the grilled branzino and linguine with while clam sauce (can't go wrong with that!). Hats off to them! Fettucini Al Antonio (5/5): Beef ragu, pesto, parmesan, and truffle oil. What could be better? The flavors were absolutely on point, and who cares if the food is a little heavy? Sometimes a working man's gotta eat well and sleep the food off! Penne alla Basil (4.5/5): Honestly, this was also quite good, but the Al Antonio was so good that I feel like I have to knock this down a few points just for justice's sake. The sauce was good. If I absolutely had to knock on it, maybe the penne was just a tad too al dente, but I was more than happy to eat this. Had a great experience here last night with my mother and husband. My mom has been wanting to come here for a while now, and it finally happened. Basil is an authentic Italian restaurant with a cute low key ambiance. We started off with a $35 bottle of pinot grigio - it was pretty good. They also brought amazing bread to the table with a great spread made out of olives. Then went for the apps - my mom had the mussels, which has the most delicious white wine sauce we've had EVER. The sauce was not watery, like it usually is when you order mussels - instead it was very rich, and paired with toasted pita bread (which has garlic on top, so good!) I got the veal meatball sliders - which weren't sliders at all. They were four different sized meatballs. The marinara sauce was the best I've had, and the meatballs were EXCELLENT. They had the right amount of mozzarella on top. My mom insisted on sharing a main course though I was full after the app. The three of us went for the same dish: Rack of Lamb, broccoli rob, and roasted potatoes. Thank God my mom and I had already eaten because that rack was tiny. Came with four very small popsicle ribs. We asked for the broccoli rob to be subbed with spinach, but got broccoli rob anyway. The roasted potatoes left something to be desired. It wasn't bad - just not an amazing dish for $30 Finally, we went for dessert. I had a cannoli - my all time favorite dish of all time. Both my husband and mother went for the tiramisu. The tiramisu was exceptional. Perfect amount of wetness, cream, and cookie wafers. The cannoli cream was amazing, but the outside shell was not great. I would def be back here again for apps only or their pasta. I went to this restaurant with a friend last night, and arrived around 9:40PM. There was no one else there except for another couple that had already been served, so we were seated very quickly. As we were seated, our waitress made sure to tell us last call was at 10:30PM. Wanting to be mindful, my friend and I quickly decided what we wanted to order, and had our food and two glasses of wine out by 10:05PM. When the food came out, we weren't quite ready for a refill of wine, so we didn't ask for one. However, we never had another opportunity to ask for one because our waitress did not come back to check on us. As she walked by once, I tried to get her attention, but she kept walking. Around 10:20PM, a large group of 6-8 people walked in, were seated immediately (and next to us) and a bottle of wine immediately poured for them. Even throughout this, no one came to check on my friend and I to see 1) if the food was good and 2) if we needed anything. We kept waiting for someone to come to our table. By now it was 10:43PM. No one came. It got to the point where we couldn't even ask for a box or the check bc no one was even attending to us. I had to get up and look for the waitress, who by chance, was just coming to check on the large group sitting next to us. I immediately asked her for a to-go box and the check. She brought the box and not the check, so I asked again, at which point, a person whom I believe was the owner brought it out. He did not bother to ask how our meal was, etc. as owners usually do. He just gave us our check and came back immediately once we tendered a credit card (that they could do quickly!) On our way out, the presumed owner was by the bar which we passed, with no one else there (again, the place the was empty) and didn't even say goodnight or take care. I normally do not take the time to write bad reviews, even if my experience was less than desirable. Having worked in the restaurant industry before, I understand how hard it is to keep tabs of all your tables and keep your customers happy. However, that was not the case last night. There was no one else to tend to when we arrived except for one another couple who already had their food. It's not like the servers were busy and overwhelmed. And the preference for the large group that sat next to us was palpable. I don't want to jump to conclusions as to why my friend and I received the treatment we did, but we will definitely not be returning here. Decided to try a new pizza restaurant. Found this place, wasn't too far from our apartment so figured we'd give it a try. Conveniently located near the Astoria Blvd train station. Front of the place is the "to go" area so keep walking further to find the table and sit-in area! (it was a bit confusing at first). Nice décor, felt homey with exposed brick and Christmas decorations. We ordered speck and brie pizza (prosciutto with cheese on pizza), tricolore pizza (pesto and marinara sauce with buffalo mozzarella), and fried calamari. The fried calamari came with fried zucchini sticks and carrot sticks. The marinara sauce was awesome! Wonder if it's homemade... was a little disappointed the calamari was on the rings (I prefer the legs) but still good. My disappointment was the pizzas. The waitress gave us the speck and brie pizza and it was only a white pizza with nothing on top. I know we picked that pizza because it had prosciutto so I knew it was wrong. When she brought the pizza over, I think she said it was Bianca. After staring at it for a few seconds, I called her over and said we ordered speck and brie pizza. She took it back and said she'll check. Came back and said that the chef just forgot to add prosciutto to the top of it. I'm wondering if they just made the wrong pizza and added prosciutto to try to cover it up because the base of the pizza is similar (although different). HMM. skeptical. The tricolore (and the speck and brie) were just super heavy and I felt I was about to have heart burn or a heart attack from all that cheese. I didn't realize that the tricolore pizza would be so packed with buffalo cheese, or maybe the chef went cheese happy. Either way, we only ate half of each pizza because we weren't happy with them. The reason for the 2 stars is the service (I'll blame myself for ordering pizzas that were so heavy). Minus one star because they messed up our pizza and tried to cover it up. Minus another star because my boyfriend ordered a coke, she forgot, she didn't even know she forgot, and we had to order it again. Minus the third star because I asked for the check. I saw her going to the computer system, only to print a check for another table. Saw her walking around, getting orders to customers, etc. Eventually she came back to our table after noticing we were done eating and just sitting around and asked if we wanted boxes for our food and the check. This best thing about this place is the service. I don't think you can find more friendly, attentive service when you're out getting some pizza. That said, the pizza is also decent here but it didn't wow me. They have a brick oven so that's great for the crust flavor but I found it a bit soggy. The tomato sauce lacked flavor but I appreciated the rocket and mozz. So, if you're in the area, this is a good spot to sit and have a slice, but I wouldn't go out of your way, which is what we did. read more

Not only am I excited to review Basil Brick Oven because: A. It's my first review in Astoria since the big move. B. Simply because the pizza here is just THAT good. Basil Brick Oven churns out some really fantastic brick oven specialty pies. Their menu alone showcases their stellar variety of toppings and flavor combinations. From the classic Margarita to their Salsiccia, everything here is delicious and well-made. Their individually portioned pies are enough to fill anyone are are cooked in under 5 minutes! (I always manage to have leftovers.) The crust is crispy and has just enough char to provoke that earthy, brick oven taste. Plus, the crust holds up the other ingredients very well. Very important factor. On average the pies range from $12-16 which is very reasonable. The staff there has been nothing but friendly. Last time I went was about a week ago - when I first moved to Astoria. Our waiter was so kind and greeted me to the neighborhood. He gave me a little packet with their menu, business card and all. I felt very welcomed. I can definitely see myself becoming a regular here. I'm a big fan of this place already! Excited to call Astoria my new home. read more

Came here with my wife and our friend & fellow yelper Chris C. I've had their pizza before via delivery and was pretty impressed by the flavors but nothing beats fresh from the oven pizza. I always find it amusing that pizza is one of the most popular foods for delivery even though it never delivers well. Damn you Domino's. Damn you! I settled on the Diavola pizza. The flavor of sopresseta calabrese was so deep, I was floored. I sheepishly asked the chef where they get it from and he told me they import it from Italy every week. Well that explains a lot....fresh and authentic ingredients just can't be beat. I also tried my wife's Brie & Speck. The speck had an awesome smokiness that would put most BBQ houses to shame. The thick slices of creamy brie was the perfect accompaniment to the speck and made for a very tasty slice though I don't think I'd be able to eat a whole pie in one sitting as it'd probably be equivalent to eating a whole wheel of brie. Now if I had to pick the best pizza of the night, I would go with Chris C's Carbonara pizza. It's one heck of a tasty pizza and the cherry on top is.. well.. an egg yolk on top! We also shared a fried calamari dish. It came with fried zucchini and carrot fries. It was good but it played second fiddle to the pizzas. What really put the experience over the top was the service. They gave us multiple glasses of wine on the house and were super friendly. Not obtrusive or annoying friendly - but genuinely nice. For just shy of 1.5 years, I've been ordering various items from BBOP (their Pugliese Pizze and Pasta alla Basil remaining my top favs). Their consistency of quality matching the price tag has been present each time. Haven't had any major delivery bumps. Last night, I tried pick up. There was a hiccup, but the staff immediately apologized and jumped on rectifying it. The owner graciously offered me a complimentary glass of house wine for the inconvenience. From what I've seen, they're courteous, they take ownership, they compensate, they keep a clean restaurant, and, if you waltz in when they have no business, they can have you out the door with a hot, fresh, gourmet pie within five minutes. I was invited to a Pizza making class through the Astoria Newbies Meetup Group and Basil hosted the event. What I thought would be a cool lesson on pizza making and hanging out with Astorians turned into one of the best evenings I have had in this great city. First off, Basil is no run-of-the-mill NY pizza place. They pride themselves on being authentic italian and they are good on their promise. They import their ingredients from Italy and made the mozzerella right in front of us. This is a family owned restaurant and you feel like you have been adopted when you step in to Basil. They opened their restaurant to us on a normally closed Wednesday and basically let the group take over. They let all 26 of us make our own pizzas and let us have control of the process from start to finish. They even let us attempt to get the pizza in the brick oven (no easy task). I ended up eating so many different pies that i lost count. To top it off, we finished the evening with their HOMEMADE tiramisu and coffee/expressos!!!! They even made certificates for our achievement :) We were already asking when we can plan this again. I've been on the search for good New York Style pizza (in NYC of all places). Basil Brick Oven Pizza, is not it. I REALLY wanted to love this place as I have heard so many good things about it. My boyfriend and I came here for a date night. When we walked in the door we were greeted by the very friendly chef and then led to our table by the hostess. Our waiter came over and realized we were having trouble deciding, so he gave us a few suggestions. My boyfriend ordered the pizza with yellow fin tuna and I ordered the "Tricolore" per our waiter's suggestion, which was a blend of tomato sauce, a "hint" of heavy cream and pesto sauce with mozzarella and basil. When our pizzas came out, the edges of my boyfriend's pizza crust were blackened and mine looked like a pizza crust with soup in the middle. It wasn't until it was presented to me that our waiter informed me that the buffalo mozzarella is a wet cheese and that the pizza is supposed to be that way. I was confused as how to eat a slice of this pizza without the whole interior of it falling out. The waiter tried to show me what to do, but the whole middle of it fell out anyway. I will admit that the flavors were really good and the ingredients were fresh, but the crust was completely soggy and very unsatisfying. I ate what I could and the boyfriend ate his entire pizza, with the exception of the incinerated crust. We paid and left. I feel like this place has potential, but they definitely need to work out a few kinks. Maybe instead of having 40 pizzas on the menu, they should narrow it down to 10 or 15 and do them well. I don't know. All I really know is that I was sadly disappointed with my food. P.S. Probably TMI, but to top it all off, my soup/pizza did terrible things to my entire digestive system. These aren't thin-n-crispy pizzas. They aren't sicilian. One pie won't feed a family. It really won't even feed two. But if excellent, authentic, Italian pie baked in the neapolitan tradition is something that makes you salivate, then you need to immediately head over to newly opened Basil Brick Oven Pizza just a block from the Astoria Blvd. stop on the N/Q. The oven, kept piping hot (850-900 F) brings these individual-sized rounds to bubbling glory in mere seconds. And while I have learned that a margherita is always my favorite (the ingredients are so fresh, you really don't need much else to confuse your senses), Basil offers a mindblowing selection of over 25 varieties, including speck & brie, gorgonzola & pear, mussels & garlic, or asparagus & egg. If there are little charred bubbles, your pizza is not burnt. It's a standard marking on this style of pizza, cooked at such extreme temperatures. The crust is crisp on the edge and then fluffy inside... the tomato & basil insanely fresh (watch as Chef Danielle cuts the herbs to-order from a little garden right by the pizza oven). A limited selection of antipasti, panini, and pastas are also available to round out the meal. We sampled the Fettuccini al Antonio, and were absolutely thrilled. Al dente pasta tossed in what could best be described as a pesto bolognese--tender ground beef, fresh basil, a touch of cream, sauteed mushrooms, Parmigiano Reggiano, and truffle oil. It was savory, decadent, and simply delicious. The pana cotta, polka dotted with vanilla bean specks, was exceptional, skirted in juicy fresh sliced pear with dollops of whipped cream and a dusting of confectioner's sugar. All of the desserts (including a Nutella stuffed pizza with strawberries), as well as the dishes, are made in-house by Chef Danielle, who brings his family recipes from Piemonte, Italy. The space is small, but immaculate... the seating limited to not many more than twenty or so. And when the neighborhood discovers what a true gem they have, there will easily be a line down the block. But for now, take advantage while you can.
