I've ordered food from this restaurant and it's usually very good. Tonight I ordered lamb vindaloo. The sauce was good but it only had three small pieces of lamb. That's a shockingly small amount of lamb. The rest was potatoes. I called the restaurant to let them know and the manager actually argued with me. He insisted that they always include 10 pieces of lamb. The most ridiculous part of this is that he called me a liar. I called to let him know what I ate and he said I was wrong. And then he hung up on me. It's really a shame but the manager has no concept of customer service. I've been a loyal customer for years. Not any more. read more

The Good: The staff was friendly, the environment was clean, and the atmosphere, overall, was nice. The Bad: The somosas and the chickpeas were cold. I don't think the particular heat lamp the somosas and chickpeas were under was working efficiently. We had the buffet; however, the options available was rather limited. We came hoping to have a relaxing Sunday lunch but instead we got rushed barely had more than 4 bites next thing we knew we were being forced to leave coz they close at 2:30. This review is for the lunch buffet. Overall it's pretty standard for an Indian lunch buffet. They had 3 vegetarian curries and 3 no vegetarian curries. I. Addition there was rice naan starters and a dessert. The price point is 15$ for buffet. I gotta say in this area sub 20$ buffets are hard to come by anymore. Food is better than average for an Indian restaurant, especially outside of MoCo or HoCo but nothing to drive from far away for. Cute spot. Will probably return. Am very familiar with Indian and Pakistani food as my Stepmother is from that region. Had the chicken curry with 2 roti (bread). The chicken curry has the same flavor I remember eating while in the military in Lahore, Pakistan. The curry is succulent and fragrant, and tasty. There is a large amount of chicken (is bough for two meals-I'm a big guy) and perfect spice and curry flavorings for this dish. It comes with rice if you do/don't order bread. The bread I had, roti, is very good and I'd say a tad better than the tandoori naan. The naan tended to get more squishy and soft after an hour or so. OMG Where do I begin? It was literally the WORST Indian food I've eaten ... and I eat Indian food every chance I get. The only thing worse than the food was the service. We arrived at 8:15pm and instead of greeting us and saying "hello" or "welcome", one of the male staff sighed, looked at the clock on the wall and said "the kitchen closes at 9 so YOU BETTER HURRY UP, OK?" Really??? Who talks to customers that way?In hindsight we should just have walked out. Anyway when we sat down and my daughter showed her ID to order a drink, for some reason they couldn't figure out that's she's 24 (it's not very difficult ... she was born in 2000 and it's now 2024!) Anyway it actually took two of them a good 2 or 3 minutes to figure it out. In of itself, it wasn't a big deal, but it just added to the already uncomfortable atmosphere. We then ordered chicken saag, butter chicken, and chicken tikka masala, and not only were they unrecognizable, they were truly disgusting. We took a few bites and left the rest because all three meals were honestly inedible, however, none of the staff cared enough to ask us why we didn't eat it or if there was a problem; they just clearly wanted to go home. When the server brought the check over, it wasn't actually the check, it was the handheld device and she just looked at it and said: "it's $114". WTF?? You don't even have the courtesy of printing the check so I can see it?? I've never seen that happen before. Then a couple of minutes later when it turned 9pm, although we all still had drinks on the table, as quick as a flash, she came over and said "sorry we're closed now". WTF???? I can't even finish my drink, even though you literally just served it to me????Do yourself a favor ... if you know and appreciate good Indian food, go somewhere else ... literally anywhere else. This place is AWFUL!!! The WORST Indian restaurant I've been to and sadly the worst restaurant I've been to since moving to Annapolis. The samosas were big, hot, and packed with flavorful fluffy potatoes and peas. The chicken tikka masala was perfectly creamy and large pieces of chicken were tender. The Vindaloo was an expert marriage of spice and bright. Our glasses never went dry and the rice bowl was filled throughout the meal. Excellent, attentive service. This restaurant has great service, fresh-top notch food and a very family oriented vibe. I'm a vegetarian and trying to find closely authentic Indian food is not an easy job but this place has def changed my perception. You can tell when someone makes food with love and passion and it comes across in the flavors! Went here with a friend so she could try Indian food for the first time and it was a success she loves it. Her order was Shrimp Curry which if you like spicy then their spice is perfect. The shrimp itself was perfectly cooked, my Chicken Tikka Masala was very good and the Naan bread is something I could continue to order. i love indian food and this restaurant serves decent indian dishes but the service is GODAWFUL. I kid you not... i thought I would go again especially since the manager asked me to come again but i just found out BOTH of my sisters won't go back because of the server's attitude. Tonight it was nonstop excuses which clearly showed they have no clue how they are alienating their customers or as i fear, they don't care, feel customers are a burden and to just shove them out the door as soon as possible. My experience tonight: i asked for extra tamerind sauce but NONE was in the bag. When 2 small bins were brought I stated i had asked for extra and the main server told me it was extra. I asked then why didn't they charge me when i asked for extra. never mind why it wasn't written down and not important to the server. i was told I had to come im person to place an order. I told him i did. He repeated himself until I asked him when he was going to listen to what I was saying. i waited outside for my order but no one notified me. When i asked why as that was the agreement, i was told "they were busy". I said you are in the food busines! I then asked the female server directly why she didn't get me and she said because i was in the car. i told her, no i told you i was waiting outside the front door at their outside tables. Nothing I said mattered, their responses were canned sentences implying the customer was out of order. i was not out of order. i expected conversations to matter. Why would i go back for more rude excuses knowing that i won't get what i thought was the agreed upon order? this restaurant is being run by staff behaving like teenagers. I have been coming to this and similar restaurants for years in this town. Basmati is the last restaurant standing in the Annapolis area, so to speak, and with good reason. It has been the most adaptable in putting an emphasis on the primary focus of not only good cuisine but expanding the scope of it. I would have to travel into Baltimore to find such a variety of meat and vegetable dishes. As an Indian restaurant in the Annapolis area, it is the only one consistently offering distinctive seafood dishes from that area of the world, if only on its regular menu. Nevertheless, the buffet remains outstanding in its sheer variety of vegetarian and vegan items that invite experimentation! I am glad they offer such touches as little take home packets of mukhwas for palate clearing. read more

This is really cool and consistent Indian restaurant. The ambiance is great but I've actually never dined in. I've done takeout from here more than a dozen times in the past two years since moving to the area. My in-laws always ask for this when they visit and they are very picky eaters. I truly think this food is better than Rasika in DC. The lamb dishes, seafood, and all the vegetarian dishes I've had here are super flavorful and filling. We always have leftovers that taste amazing when warmed up. I'm obsessed with the Kashmiri naan, Chana masala, and shrimp vindaloo. They have a decent selection of Indian wines and beers too. Service is always friendly and they're typically fast with getting food out. It's my go to Indian spot. Amazing food for an amazing price! $14.95 per person for all-you-can-eat is a deal you can't beat! We get Mango Lassies with our meals and they are delicious! The last time we went though, we were pretty unhappy with the service alone (not the food!) We were hovered over and rushed out by a lady that worked there because she said they were closing soon but we still had 15 minutes. As paying customers eating, and also having brought guests with us to lunch, we did not appreciate that at all. I've been here several times now & I realized that I've never written them a review! The restaurant is always on the empty side (not sure if it's because I've never visited on the weekend, or because of the day/time I've been here). That works for me though, especially with COVID, I felt very safe dinning indoors, as everyone was significantly spread out last night. At the end of the meal, we were asked to provide a name and phone number for contact tracing (not sure if that's new for MD/Annapolis, or it's just what the restaurant has implemented). The food is always excellent, and it's normally out fairly quickly. I always end up with leftovers when I eat here, and the waiter was kind enough last night to completely fill up the rice for me to put in a takeout container for my leftovers. 10/10 would recommend if you're in the mood for Indian and want a warm & good COVID precaution restaurant to visit! read more

Walked in on a Saturday or Sunday a little after 2 pm bc my boyfriend and I wanted the buffet and we were craving indian. We walk in and told they don't sit people down after 2. We were bummed at first, but they said we can take food from the buffet to-go. We were completely fine with that. They made some extra rice and gave us fresh naan to go and also ordered mango lassi's to go. Great lunch buffet! We went in today on a rainy Saturday. The decor is really lovely, and they have a nice bar area. Their lunch buffet was full of favorites and some new combinations we really enjoyed. They have an appetizer section, main dishes, and a salad side. We had one child in our party, so we asked for a kids menu. The server mentioned that most of the items on the kids menu were on the buffet in one form or another, so we all did the buffet. The samosa and the veggie fritters on the appetizer table were scrumptious. They also had a chicken finger type appetizer, but made with a tasty chick pea batter. This is the third time we've gotten carryout from Basmati. The food has been fine, but nothing I'd say is out of the ordinary for Indian food as long as you pick a half decent place. But all three times, the service has been abysmal. And coming from retail, as the third time I've experienced this, at this point I'm leaving a rating. My boyfriend called and asked if he could place a carryout order, and the first thing the guy says is "we close at 9:30 so you have to be here in 10 minutes." so... That's 9:20, but sure. He makes this very clear. 10 minutes. I've never known a restaurant to not have to clean up and do prep, but I guess not. He places a small order. When I then I walk in at 9:21, there are several guys chatting, everyone with their coats on, everyone ready to go. As soon as I walk in, the guy just states the cost of my order. Doesn't bother with even "hey" or eye contact. Just the cost and stands there until I hand him my card quietly. Normally I'll leave a tip even for carryout, but this is the third time we've been treated like trash here, so I just marked my price as he stated it and said "thanks" and walked out. The guy didn't even give me my receipt but half crumpled it and kinda tossed it on the counter in between us when I think he saw I didn't leave a tip, but maybe it was just a coincidence. He made sure to grab my signed copy. While I still was able to force a "thanks" out, he still said nothing and seemed irritated. I did retail for over a decade, so I get being pissy, but this was beyond acceptable. My bf and I were both more than polite from start to finish, and this was the third time getting crappy service. I don't even know if my order is correct, but at this point it's just about being treated half decently. read more

I noticed a banner on this place noting Happy Hour, I checked the web site, nothing, and yelp nothing. I stopped in and sat at the bar. I had to ask the happy hour and found a table talker that notes, $4 wine, $3.50 beer and about half a dozen small bites at $3, $6 and $9. I had a very generous glass of Chardonnay, shrimp pakoras and vegetable samosas. Three nice sauces and puppodums were served right away. The Samosas were great, pakoras kind of flabby but at $6, not bad. Not a happy hour you could frequent but worth a visit for an Indian fix at a great price. Service was painful. read more
