This place used to be great. It's gone so downhill; I don't know why. The service is sub par. Some of the cashiers don't care and are not willing to help with questions. The quiche is $10 a slice and was pretty bad. No flavor, dense crust and considering the price/service that came with it it's safe to say I will not visit again. Their desserts (I had a lemon bar) are also not great. Save your money and go somewhere else. read more

Today, this is what was put in my bag from a top shelf behind counter. I should have looked at it but I would never have expected to be sold stale burned cinnamon raisin bread. Yum yum yum! This place was amazing! They had a ton of selections to choose from. Fresh bread and pastries which looked delicious. I had the ham, egg, and cheese crepe which I recommend everyone to get. The chi tea was a great pairing to my breakfast. It would appear the older gentleman is talking to himself early Sunday morning at the Basque Boulangerie Cafe. Remembering a long dead faithful bird dog who read hand signals like no other, and smiled when she did a good job. Talking about too many tourists in town, but the 10k race that brought them here is going to be a bunch of ladies jogging naked, so that might make it worthwhile. It would appear the fellow was not too lucid until more old men slide in beside him with a quiet hello, and the talk continues as a dialog, and he's holding his own. Someone has a stepson in his 40s who is going on 17, has all kinds of excuses why he can't find a job and his mother babies him and lets him stay at home but soon, soon that boy is going to be homeless. Another remembers when they used to go up to Petrocellis and get wine for $2 a gallon and it was good. So and so is pretty sick and maybe we should all go visit him this afternoon. And yes, there are too many tourists in town. The Boulangerie is the heartbeat of the Plaza, the baked goods are pretty good, the coffee is pretty good, the company is exceptional. It is surrounded by shoppes with crap you don't need and restaurants no local would set foot in. Go in the morning before the tourists toss off the Frette. read more

MASSIVE breakfast sandwiches! I got a bacon, egg, cheese and added spring mix and tomatoes. It was really good and so huge, I was full ALL DAY. It's a cute little place in Sonoma square, with not a very long line when we went. The lady who was yelling out our names had a very loud, high pitched voiced, so that was kind of annoying. They also forgot egg in mine but I went back and they put it in right away and apologized. Overall- I would definitely come here again for a fast breakfast. read more

Every time we come to the area we try to come here for lunch. One reason: the New England Clam chowder. It's delicious. Probably, some of the best I've ever had. 5 stars. Been coming here for over 50 years since it was the Old Sonoma Bakery. First stop when I get to town. Sourdough rolls and loaves are to die for. Simply the best at making bread in Northern California. The other stuff they serve, I will not comment on. This is a manadatory stop for the bread, if you are in Sonoma on a visit. I've been to this place quite a few times. The food and the breads are very good but the customer service from the older, tall, gray haired lady with a gap between her front teeth made my visit absolutely unpleasant. I ordered a sandwich that was noted to come on Rye bread. As I always do at other places I asked to have my sandwich on French sourdough instead. The tall lady with gap between her teeth in a fake smile said we do not have French bread. Now this is a boulangerie and they make tons of breads including sourdough. I pointed to the shelf with French bread abundant and brought it to her attention. Again with her fake smile she said we use those for something else. I hen asked can I have my sandwich on any other kind of bread and she said no. I asked her why you don't just say 'No Substitutions' so one doesn't even try for another type of bread (which is odd for a sandwich place). She got a bit antsy in a soft, whispering voice (so other customers would not hear) said: "we didn't ask you to come in here" to which I told her you are extremely rude and unwelcoming. I stayed there only because I was giving a tour of the wine country to 3 of my out of state friends and also didn't want a crazed, tall, angry, gray haired lady with a gap between her teeth ruin my usually pleasant experience at the Basque Boulangerie. I just mention this to make sure they improve their customer service to match their breads in quality. Hope the tall, angry, gray haired lady with a gap between her teeth tries hard to learn to have a real smile or no smile but at least real. No fake smile. read more

Sandwich bread was hard & dry, my turkey meat was rubbery. My sister got the chicken sandwich with bacon & the same issue with the dry hard bread, only 1 piece of bacon & a small piece of chicken. After shopping at Sign of the Bear Kitchenware, a sweet snack was needed. Also, the bf and I were headed to Tahoe later that night, and I wanted to bring with us some local Sonoma sweets. The kind ladies at Sign of the Bear suggested this cafe, and I'm glad they did! Knowing that we had a long night ahead of us (we were going to a cooking class and then making the 3-hour drive) I decided to grab a mocha, while he chose the white mocha. I also picked up a cinnamon almond twist bread to go with my mocha. And for later, I past up their fancy desserts (beehive cake, lemon meringue, almond tart, etc.) and went with the classic apple pie. I raved about my mocha the entire time I was drinking it! I typically don't order mochas because I've had those that were more chocolate-y with coffee flavor rather than the other way around. But this one was not at all overly sweetened with syrup, allowing the flavor of their gourmet coffee to come through. The cinnamon almond twist bread was also not too sweet and went perfectly with my drink. The bf also thought his white mocha was just sweet enough. We enjoyed the apple pie the next night, a la mode (vanilla ice cream). It had more spice to it than other apple pies I've had - I liked it! If I'm ever in the area again, I would definitely make a return visit! read more

It is basically a custard cake with almond flavoring, all I know is I couldn't stop eating it. Especially after a day of wine tasting, that was magical. We will be back! read more

I was drawn in by Food Network hype and a bit shameful for it. After seeing Racheal Ray do one of her $40 A Day shows in Sonoma many years ago, I knew I had to trek to this little cafe nestled in the heart of Downtown Sonoma someday. We arrive and were greeted warmly by one of the many counter clerks (perhaps the hype is why they were so busy on a drizzly cold Sunday morning and thus tons of staff). I looked at the reason for my visit in the display case, Beehive Cake, in it's fullest form and almost passed out thinking that was my serving size! Thankfully I was pointed to the slices that were cleverly displayed in the other case along with slices of other cakes and pies they make fresh daily. I took a slice of the Beehive and a coffee for my friend who was so gracious to accompany me on my little adventure. We shared the slice and it was an ok little cake. I'd have to say though that the custard wasn't my absolute fave nor the supposed honey praline topping. I barely tasted any honey in the slice I munched on which kinda disappointed me and it was very dry. EPIC FAIL Perhaps I just got a bad slice but anyway you slice it (see what I did there?), I had my experience and can now die happy that I followed in Racheal's footsteps albiet many years later. read more

I wanted to bring Basque Boulangerie back to Chicago with me! We ate here for breakfast both Saturday and Sunday of a recent weekend getaway to Sonoma. I had both the quiche and the crepes which were great, but the absolute BEST part of this place is the baked goods! I tried muffins, croissants, cookies... even basic toast is fantastic here. It gets pretty crowded so you might have to get your food to go, but they also have outdoor tables. Which weren't so useful to us as it rained the entire weekend, but others may find them useful. I need to go back on a nice day so I can grab a coffee and pastry and stroll around the Square. read more

This used to be one of my favorite little spots on the square but my last few visits have been a big turn off. Customer service is very spotty, some times it's helpful and friendly, some times it so much. The last time we went in I asked if there was raw egg in the Caesar dressing and I was told "I'm not sure" with a blank stare, I asked if he could go ask the kitchen and he said "ummm I'm not sure if the chef is still here, sorry". And that was the extent of the help he provided....Apparently having any sort of restrictions is too difficult to bother them with and our food was mediocre following bad service. The time before that was a stop in for breakfast and we paid way too much for 2 Luke warm slightly soggy breakfast sandwiches. I'm not sure we'd be back for anything more than a coffee. I am not in love with the Basque. In fact, we don't even have a "like" relationship. They took the place of Sonoma French, and they do not live up to the old place. Breads are dry. Tasteless. In a word - useless. I would MUCH rather get a great loaf of Della from Sonoma Market Whole Foods. One thing it's got: location location location. This is for the tourists, and the self-proclaimed elite of Sonoma who apparently, just don't know any better. However, if you are drinking at Murphy's laaate at night and you work it with the bread bakers, sometimes they'll give you some for free. yum yum mousse! While on the Bottle Shock tour Mrs N planned for us, we needed dessert. Lady N had searched Yelp and found this little place in Sonoma Plaza, just around the corner from a couple sites shot in the movie. We found this bustling little place the offer a wide variety of food and drink. Artisan breads, pastries, sandwiches, caffes, wines, etc. Lots of staff on hand made the process go fairly smooth considering the popularity. Mrs got a raspberry pastry thingy, I think. I got a mousse cake cube thingy. Yes I'm that cultured. Moving on. We acquired the goods and went on to picnic at a near by winery. These treats were the perfect compliment to Mrs N's collection of picnic delights! It seems to me that Basque Boulangerie Cafe is really a place everyone should check out. read more

This place is hard to rate. The pre-made croissants we had were easily the worst I've ever had anywhere! Supposed to be bacon and cheese: instead, no cheese at all, and a few strips of ham in a stale croissant. We were kind of astounded since the location is so good. We sat at the counter and watched the making of the fresh sandwiches by the young ladies. That's why this gets 2 stars instead of 0. They were large, filled with lots of, say, ham and cheese, looked delicious. But we didn't actually eat them. Sitting in that location, I also took note of the filthy counter and coffee machine just inside the kitchen area. The counters look bruised and dark: not at all appetizing. Someone needs to take over here, renovate that kitchen and see that it is kept clean. They should be able to afford that: the place is so well located and has a lot of traffic and the prices are not cheap. read more

We wanted to host a simple Sunday recovery brunch after our wedding. The first two restaurant caterers we approached quoted over $1,300 and $1,400 (for 40 people) for some muffins, breakfast sandwiches and pastries. I just laughed and went back to writing place cards or something. On the Monday of our wedding week, I googled 'breakfast caterer Sonoma' and Basque Boulangerie popped up. I looked at their menu and ordered 50 breakfast sandwiches and some pastries. Delivery was free and the reviews on Yelp helped me make a decision without even trying their food. I am so overdue for giving this place the kudos it deserves. I live in So CA but try to travel to Sonoma at least once annually. I have my patterns, my fixations. Maybe I am OCD, who knows? But, there are a couple things which are part of my routine in Sonoma and one of them is breakfast at the Basque Boulangerie Cafe! Always great service! The line is a really good indicator that you have come to the right place for breakfast. Normally, I go for the bread pudding and a latte. It's just a "thing" that I gravitate toward. Usually, I tell myself, "Next time I am going for one of the pastries or a killer muffin." I almost never do. Yeah, that's OCD. Well, this time I branched out. I took a friend with me and we ran through a few of the baked goods. I even took a few items to go. I can't pick just one thing. Everything is as good as it looks. I had an apple cranberry muffin, while my friend had a croissant, an apricot almond muffin, and a baguette. I took home a bread pudding and a chocolate cherry muffin. The coffees and lattes we had were top knotch! This is a great place to put down a base layer and get ready for some serious wine tasting. It's just a great place over all. I took so many pictures and posted them on FB just to tick off my friends back home. Wish I had more time in Sonoma, I would be here many more times. With the busy lunch order, I rushed to make a decision. They were happy to add Brie to my Turkey sandwich. They added lots of Brie, but I was lucky to be able to bite into the hard baguette. I've spent the last two months floating around Europe, taking advantage of all the things foodie I love, including bread. Now America does do some kinds of bread really well, but if you just want a nice sandwich loaf, or French stick, there is something seriously lacking about this place. Baguettes should never be chewy, nor heavy. I love baguettes stuffed with cheese and ham. It's one of the greatest treats in life. Note, I didn't include pickle. You don't need pickle if you have the right cheese and the right ham. Oddly, that usually is only available (for me, anyway), in cute cafes in rural French villages. Actually, anywhere in France really. Perhaps I fuss too much. Heading up to Sonoma, hungover and a little scared of wine tasting when the body and soul felt so fragile, we popped into the town centre in search of coffee and sustenance to support us in our quest to spend large quantities of money on squashed grapes. We happened upon Basque Boulangerie. Basque Boulangerie? I sneered in European disgust. But I take it back, Basque Boulangerie. I love you, really I do, you little Spanish French tease. Your bread that hangs on the wall, your many sweet delights. A French stick that has a crusty glorious outer concealing the light, airy bread that begets a baguette. I would almost drive to Sonoma every week to buy more of your wonders, but in all honesty, it won't happen. I also have to give honourable mention to the cinammon raisin bread. Admittedly, I am a virgin cinammon raisin toast eater. Well, I was, until yesterday. My sister had it for breakfast, while I had crepes (those were not so impressive as the baked goods, a little non-existent in the taste department). It looked amazing, and smelled similar. Light, airy, cinammony, sugary, dripping in butter. So bad, it was heaven. They sell it by the loaf too, so I left packed with my carb intake for a few days. Good carbs don't matter, only bad ones do. Tea and coffee were ok, but lets face it, you come to this bakery/cafe for one thing and one thing only - the baked goods. Highly recomended and extremely busy - be prepared to stand in queue for a while before you get your grubby hands on their supplies. Do what we did, take some bread away, armed with some good cheese and ham; buy a bottle of vino and sit in a vineyard somewhere, wondering if you really want to work in the rat race, or would spending your days surrounded by grass and grape be such a really bad way to live? read more

Great for a quick sandwich while walking around downtown Sonoma. There was a line but nothing compared to the hour-long waits at some of the nearby restaurants. From the bakery: Cheese bread - so addicting & so good! Russian tea cakes - not too sweet. Monster cookies - didn't try this one...SOMEONE was stuffing their face with it. I'm not really a fan of this place (hence the three star review), but I can see why people love the beehive cake. We got a slice of that cake, as well as a raisin danish and a strawberry cheese croissant. The beehive cake was extremely fluffy! The cake, and the custard sort of melded together because the fluffy texture, and the custard reminded me a bit of like vanilla ice cream. However, the other items we got were not that good. The croissant was not flaky, and overall not very good. I also did not like that they just used strawberry jam/preserve which just tasted overly sweet/fake. As for the raisin danish, it had similar problem with the croissant, the texture of the breaded part was just not right. I would come back here for the beehive cake if I was really craving custard, but I would definitely pass on all the other bakery items. read more

Fear hit me at the realization I hadn't found a sidewalk lounging coffee / people-watching place to call home in Sonoma. Imagine if a more relaxed Petite Robert was married with a more downplayed Steps of Rome and transplanted to Sonoma Town Square. Morning pastries, small plates foods all day (leaning towards the European / Mediterranean), and of course they have an amazing selection of drinks, baked goods and sweets. You know it's great when locals from up and down the valley make it a daily stop. And you can make fun of the tourists...but I'd never do that. read more
