We stopped in here after our afternoon at Buena Vista Winery. I was in the mood for some bread and butter after wine tasting. We were pleasantly surprised that they have a heated patio for our dog and that they walk around giving their patrons warm freshly made chocolate chip cookies. Boy were they delicious. I ended up ordering some french bread toasted with butter and coffee for my hubby. It was great. We noticed a ton of locals dropping in to pick up their freshly baked bread for their dinners. I am extremely disappointed. I used to come here all the time because I grew up in sonoma and I have always had an enjoyable encounter with past employees; but I have to stop coming here. I am extremely allergic to dairy and I specifically asked your employee (his name was Marcus) for almond milk, I was given regular milk in my drink and did not realize until after I had already drank my chai. I cannot continue to come to this establishment because if one worker will not respect my dietary needs, how can I trust other employees to respect them? I was informed that he was bragging about doing it on purpose. It's unbelievable that you can put up with this type of service. This was my go-to for breakfast while visiting Sonoma. I was the only non-senior citizen local in attendance which says something about the quality here. Before our trip back home we stopped by Basque Boulangerie Cafe. The young girl at the counter was very sweet and helpful. We came to buy sourdough bread and ended up getting the toast with butter and jam too. The girl at the counter suggested the Dutch bread, wow was it good! It came out as two large slices toasted and buttered with their homemade jam. We ate at the counter, so much fun. You can watch the staff make coffee/tea and interact with customers. read more

I went to the Basque Cafe on Sunday the 14th of September. I will start with my biggest gripe right off the bat to serve as a warning to others: They do not have Wi-Fi. I had gone there to work on a project and while they said they had wi-fi, they warned us that it did not work most of the time. On this occasion, it was not working. This was very frustrating. How could a coffee shop not have Internet? I was pleased with the appearance of the cafe and its cleanliness from the onset. There appeared to be a good selection of pastries and breads, but on this occasion I had gone in for a sandwich and a cup of coffee. The sandwich board had many options, as well as options for vegetarians and pescatarians. I ordered the Tri-Tip French Dip sandwich. My companion ordered the Tuna Melt. - The Dip was overcooked (while I have no evidence to back it up, I believe they use the unsold bread from previous days to make this sandwich which is why it was so hard). I was initially not served any au jus and had to go to the counter to ask for it. The meat was pretty good, the cheese was excellent. Overall the sandwich would have been excellent had the bread not been so hard. - The Tuna Melt was about what you would expect. It wasn't spectacular. It was on sliced bread and was open face. The coffee -- I ordered a White Chocolate Latte -- was okay at best. It was awkwardly served in a huge water glass instead of a coffee cup. It had too much syrup and the flavor of the coffee was completely masked. The staff that helped us was very pleasant. There was a young guy who took our order and was probably a high school student who was awkward but in a way you would expect from someone of that age. I also recommend the chai tea latte, they truly make everything with love! I took 2 sips and threw it away (another waste of money). Lastly, I tried a Raspberry Turnover that tasted stale. I had about 1/16th of it and it went in the garbage as well. After the long drive up to Sonoma, this was the first place we visited to grab some lunch. There's not much seating, so it may be better to take your food to go if you can. It was a cool, overcast day, and we were lucky enough to snag a table next to a sweet local woman who made quick friends with my son as we waited for our food. I had the grilled cheese - nice touch that they let you pick what kind of cheese you like, and though my husband thought he had ordered it with tomato it didn't appear on the receipt. :( That was ok - it was delicious with just cheddar. He had a Reuben, which was really tasty as well. My son had a bowl of seasonal fruit, that was pretty decent, but included a lot of melon, which I just see as filler. Five stars for this lady here who is so nice and she was giving away free bread to everyone here even someone on the street at the end of the day on a Sunday! She patiently helped me pick out my first beehive cake then offered me free sourdough loaf! Updated review 20 mins later, she noticed I didn't really eat my cake and asked me if I wanted to pick out something else and finally gave me 4 pieces of truffles that cost $2.95 each!! What has happened to this establishment? I went there yesterday and today for a coffee and pastry and both experiences were brutal. Yesterday I stood waiting for service for a long time. There is no rhyme or reason to the ordering process, just a small mob in a confined space waiting to place their orders. I ordered a poppy seed roll and a coffee and was told they didn't have poppy seed rolls. Behind the young employee was a shelf with at least a dozen poppy seed rolls. Today, when the gentleman in front of me completed his order, I moved forward and the cashier would not make eye contact. I quickly figured out why: she was on her cell phone texting. This went on for over a minute. The woman had no warmth or charm, made a mistake on my order, and seemed annoyed. Management: take control of this situation. Demand more from your employees. A Must Visit - Excellent quick place for breakfast with the very best pastries and service to match. If your going to stop someplace for breakfast in Sonoma this should be the place. The ham and egg croissant is amazing! If your from another city SF or other large metropolitan city you will find the prices exceptionally cheap. I read reviews online and they all seem to say one thing, try the Bee Hive cake! So my girlfriends and I were in town and decided to stop by before we headed home. The line was pretty long, but went fairly quick. There's a lot of different baked goods and breads to choose from and you can even sit down to have a bite to eat, but seems like everyone was there to get mainly the Bee Hive cake. Bee Hive cake: I ordered only a slice to give it a try. I wasn't impressed though. The cake was creamy and moist, but the flavor was just ok. I have a sweet tooth, so maybe I was expecting more sweetness. One of my girlfriends did like it more because it wasn't overly sweet. The service was fast and the people are all friendly. The staff was so kind and inviting, and even though they did mess up our order the 1st time, they were so kind and the sandwich (turkey reuben) was so worth the wait. We sampled so many delicious goodies and she helped formulate a menu. She even offered suggestions and said we could have the alley behind the cafe for our party. We didn't go with this place though for the only a few reasons * Cafe didn't offer enough space inside for a party of 5 or more since it's very popular and crowded (we had 15) * Alley had a lot of flies and noise from people setting up their restaurants and stores * There was no space to host our guests and the park nearby doesn't accommodate large group seating (also, no rain backup) However, should I want a pastry fix I would not hesitate to come here again. read more

I stopped at this spot for lunch on a weekday. There was a small line but service was pretty fast. I ordered a turkey club sandwich and a piece of their beehive cake. I decided to take my order to the park across the street and when I opened my sandwich and took a few bites, realized the bacon was missing. Since the sandwich was really boring as is, I walked back across the street and explained the issue to one of the people behind the counter. I explained that the bacon was missing and asked if I could get a piece or two to add to the remaining sandwich. The employee insisted on making me another full sandwich instead of just giving me a piece of bacon. Why waste a sandwich because of a tiny mistake? Did he not believe me that the bacon was missing and wanted to see for himself after I said I didn't want the sandwich I had started to go to waste? I just couldn't understand why he was arguing when I offered the most simple solution. Well, I finally got my piece of (cold) bacon in a piece of foil and added it to the sandwich. It didn't help. Poor quality turkey, a sliver of avocado, way too much gooey mayo, and a really hard sourdough roll that made the sandwich hard to eat and unappealing. After all that work for the bacon, I just ate it and left half the sandwich for the trash. The beehive cake was good but way too big for one person to enjoy even over two sittings. I enjoyed all the pastry layers and the custard but the serving size was just too much for me. For me, any visit to Sonoma MUST include a stop at the Basque Cafe. I mean, it's not like there's any shortage of good bakeries in the Peninsula and South Bay, but there's something really special and comforting to me about this place. Is it the old-school and local (as opposed to chi-chi or tourist-trappy) vibe? The amazing variety of pastries with apricot (not something I see all that frequently)? The fresh and crusty bread? Yes, yes, and yes! They do have a small selection of "fancy" desserts, but I tend to head towards the pastry. I'm a big fan of the apricot coffee-cake-type item, which is comprised of apricot, tender and flaky cake, and almond-brown sugar crumb. I also really like the sourdough. Though I don't find it all that sour (to be honest), it has a nice crunchy crust and a fluffy soft center. Great with some of that cheese you just picked up down the street! If there's a line, it tends to move pretty quickly. And yes, it is busy on weekend mornings. But it's always worth a visit! read more

Loved it! Such a charming, cute place. We stayed here for a couple days and while walking downtown, we kept seeing this cute bakery/deli, which was so charming with its chalkboard menus, ceiling fans, and cute decor. The place was also always PACKED, so we knew it had to be good. Today, we finally got our chance to come here to check out the goods. We had the chicken salad sandwich. The chicken salad sandwich's recipe changes every day, so for example, today we had the apricot chicken salad -- tomorrow, the chicken salad would not be apricot but something else. There are also different soups and etc. that change each day. Here's a breakdown of what we had: Chicken salad sandwich: I was so confused at first about how on earth anyone sane would put apricot with a perfectly good chicken salad, but it was so good. The chicken salad was light, had great seasoning, and was perfectly moist and delicious. The chicken salad had large pieces of chicken and smaller pieces of apricot mixed with mayonnaise and special spices/seasonings. The chicken salad laid in between a "baby baguette" with a spring mix of lettuces (arugula, radicchio, frise, etc), slices of tomato, and a bit of mayonnaise and mustard on the baguette, which was toasted. The sandwich was also served with a dill pickle spear and two kalimata olives. My husband and I split the sandwich, and it was so delicious, light, and a great day to wind down after our day of wine tasting after lunch but a couple hours before dinner. I also had the custard and fruit danish, which was good but a bit too sweet for me. I probably should have gotten a cheese danish, but the lady in front of me took the last two cheese danishes, even though she already had a box full of delicious pastries. All the pastries and baked goods here look amazing. I really want to eat a morning bun, a cinnamon roll, one of the sweet-looking muffins, cookies, danishes, croissants, and more here, but we had no room! Can't wait to go back!
