So was excited to try Basque Boulangerie Cafe, however unfortunately the only food that's decent is the almond croissant which is the only item getting a star. The breakfast burrito ordered had raw potatoes and burrito and panini ordered was pretty much cold by the time received not to mention being screamed at to pick up an order that took 40 minutes. But the biggest issue was the condescending attitude of the staff at the front counter yelling at customers when picking up there orders- its one to elevate your voice to assure a customer hears you over a busy packed cafe but it doesn't give you the right to be assholes to your customers if it takes them awhile to get through the crowd to pick up there order. I understand being busy but at least have the courtesy of being friendly and welcoming to your customers- Ive been to enough busier cafes in la and San francisco with a small staff that can still rise above the busy hustle and bustle and remember the customers are what keep you in business- so show them the respect and courtesy they deserve. read more

We arrived in Sonoma before any of the shops were open so decided to stop here and kill some time with a quick cup of coffee. We were not prepared for the wide array of pastries and breads that were set before us. Everything looked amazing from cookies to croissants, turnovers, rolls, cakes....... the list goes on. My husband chose to get the beehive, not something I could eat at 9 a.m., and I got a berry turnover. He loved his, though said he thought it was designed to be shared, it was so huge! My turnover had perfectly flaky crust and the jam inside complimented it well. I won't rave about my coffee as it was just a cup of coffee. Had I not already indulged in one on the way to Sonoma, I would have tried a white mocha - maybe next time. We bought a few dutch crunch rolls to bring home and those were equally delicious. Great bread and good sandwiches. A great choice when in the Sonoma square. Did some shopping and then stopped here for lunch. Turned out to be a good call. The only draw back is that they don't use their great bread for their sandwiches. We had the chicken salad sandwich, turkey Ruben and the grill cheese. The chicken salad was fresh with the right amount of celery and additions. The chicken was also flavorful and tender. The grilled cheese was great. My son inhaled it. There's a cute flare to this lil cafe. I don't have much of a sweet tooth but I was still impressed with the treats I got. The cheese sticks were the best ever! Only wished I coulda had them heat it up there for me to eat but I was heading to LaSalette around the corner for lunch. There is so much cheese and crunch to the cheese stick, a great savory treat. The florentine was also awesome. I thought it'd be too sweet but it wasn't! And finally the oatmeal, choc chip and walnut cookie was yums. Pastry and coffee review only: I ordered several coffees, a Sun Bun and a Chocolate Croissant. I've had amazing Sun Buns. This is not one of them. It was clearly not baked today and neither was the croissant which had that waxiness to it that makes it pretty average. The coffee was fine, also average. Pastries were decent bit crunchier than I would like but that's personal preference. My real reason for the two stars was the lack of customer service. I don't care that it's only 7 am on Saturday it's part of the job. But for some free advice if a customer is within five feet of you, GREET THEM! I've seen less surly wait staff at a truck stop. Not one of the counter people looked happy to be there and did everything they could to avoid eye contact. Put someone on the register that speaks loudly and clearly and likes to smile. The food experience here is unparalleled! The absolute best bread and freshest ingredients. I had the club on wheat and was literally cussing in disbelief at how great it was. To stroll past the loaves in the alley going to and fro while being mesmerized by the hunger-inducing aroma is a uniquely Sonoma thing. However... I will never set foot in the cafe again. My service experience has been pretty awful. Don't go in hungry. I have always enjoyed the food but the lack of service is not worth the visit. Average sandwich menu - turkey, beef, pastrami, reubans, soup of the day, quiche, grilled cheese, some croque monsieur. Everything is made in a small open corner kitchen spot. They have coffees, teas, smoothies. I wanted to order a club sandwich but they ran out of avocado so I went with a turkey sandwich instead. It was cold was pretty cold, one small slice of a tomato, a good amount of turkey, some lettuce, mustard, and too much mayo. The bread was fine. Came with a side pickle and that's about it. Love this place! Can always find something delicious and sugary at the counter! The sourdough pull apart bread is a must to bring home if you're a dipper! And I love the Dutch crunch rolls! A casual walk up bakery and coffee shop in the middle of Sonoma Square. This place was bustling at 8 am on Sunday morning and all the outdoor Parisian style tables were taken. The wait for coffee and baked goods was a few minutes, and totally worth it. I had an americano that was delicious and a chocolate walnut muffin. Both were rich and delicious and reasonably priced. My gal pals and I couldn't find a place to sit together, but we just crossed the street into the park and found a lovely table where we enjoyed our spoils. French style bakery and café serving up deli sandwiches made on freshly baked bread. This café is located in busy Sonoma Square and gets crowded during lunch. I would recommend taking your lunch to go if possible since the dining area fills up quickly. The sandwiches are very good but take a little while to make because of how crowded it gets here. They have daily specials and the day I went it was a chicken guacamole sandwich with a soda for $9.99. It was tasty and made to order. They also bake fresh cookies and about any other type of pastry you can think of. Two things about cafés in Sonoma - 1. Please do yourself a favor, I know that Sonoma finally got a Starbucks - but please please PLEASE do not go there for your AM coffee. 2. Please remember that in small towns, the pace is slower. It will take longer to get your coffee at the Basque, but you're in Sonoma - you're probably on vacation. What's the hurry? The Basque has a beautiful display of breads, pastries, cookies and cakes. I can vouch for the breads, pastries and cookies - but have never had the cakes. I can also vouch for their extra garlicky Caesar salad at lunch time. Yum, but not so good if you're going to be breathing on anyone afterwards. My personal favorite at the Basque is the Russian Tea Cake - which is actually a cookie -- a shortbready dough, rolled with raspberry jam, and sprinkled with shaved almond slices. I always feel like vignettes speak volumes. So if I had the ability to be concise with words, here is what my review would come down to: Recently I hit the road just before 7 AM to get a leg up on the long drive back down to Orange County. I had the boyfriend stop at the Basque for some coffee and muffins, and so he could buy his favorite loaf of pull-a-parts just as the café was opening. The sidewalk tables were occupied by single gray haired men with their dogs leashed to the table legs. Inside, all the tables were full of retired couples enjoying breakfast with each other or with likeminded groups of friends. Every chair in the little café was occupied. Every customer was chatting happily, with a steaming cup of coffee and a glistening pastry with a jeweled glob of custard or fruit filling sitting before them. We were here the other day to grab some breakfast and also some pastries to go. We've been here before and enjoyed every single thing we've bought. The first time we were here, we ordered the grilled cheese with tomato. And i know it's only grilled cheese, but oh my, it was one of the best grilled cheese sandwiches I've ever had. This past weekend, my bf and I were here and the line was out the door! We ordered the breakfast special sandwich. It was an egg, bacon and cheese sandwich on a dutch crunch roll. And I can't believe how darn good the dutch crunch roll was. It was oh so fresh and crunchy. Just the way I like. There's been a lot of places that I've been to and their dutch crunch breads for sandwiches and it isn't as good as Basque boulanangerie. We also ordered the fruit coffee cake to take home and had it for dessert and it was oh so yummy. I've had coffee cakes from other bakeries around the bay area and I haven't had one as good as theirs. This is our spot when we're up in Sonoma. CAUTION TO ALL CHAI DRINKERS! This cafe has great pastries, but beware of the barista with a beard as he seems to believe 'Chai' is actually a big cup of steamed milk. The Basque probably has the best French bread in all of California, actually they have the awards to prove it - check the wall art. Okay, so my Uncle is part owner and master baker who was taught by a Frenchman at a bakery he used to work at. That Frenchman just happens to be the father of his business partner. Having said that, I've had bread in France and Italy and still think the offerings at the Basque are far superior. It could be that I grew up eating sweet and sour French loafs from the Basque and don't know any better or the bread is just that good. Also, if you're wandering around town around midnight you can head around to the side of the bakery and get a loaf right out of the oven. My husband and I celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary with a stay at the Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa. As we did twenty years ago, we wanted to experience something similar to the European honeymoon we had without spending all the mula to do it! (three teenagers, no $). So, the Basque Boulangerie Cafe sounded like it could be close to the European experience and it was! We found the cafe after making a drive around the Sonoma square. We both wanted something eggie and sweet so we ordered the sausage, egg croissant along with a chocolate/cherry muffin. Both were delicious! Stopped by to pick up some baked treats on the way back home from Sonoma. It's right in downtown Sonoma so its a convenient location. It's definitely not as good as Bouchon, but it's got pretty tasty treats. We got a rasberry almond croissant which was tasty. The morning bun was also good. Cookies were ok, but nothing too special. They have a good selection of various baked goods, so definitely worth checking out if you're in the area. read more

Cheap and reasonable quality. I guess I am just spoiled with having Semifreddis, acme, and cheeseboard close to where I live, so it's hard to compare. This place while cheaper is not quite as good with quality but its definitely good enough. Pass on the cheesy boat, however, it reminded us of a garlic breadstick from a pizza take out place. Lovely pastries, but in a single trip, there were two employees that were unexplainably rude to my friends and I. Most of the people here were 45+, and my friends and I are in our early twenties, so the fact that we were seen as "rowdy teenagers" was quite offensive.
