Went on a Saturday for brunch with three other people and when I asked the wait time, the host took awhile to seat us, even though I said we were ok with outside. At the end, we ended up seating outside and all the time wasted could have been to help other people. Our server was friendly, but since we were outside she would take awhile to come outside. The meatloaf was a big plate and my husband could not finish it. He did say it was a bit salty. The shrimp and grits were great (would recommend). My son's chicken tenders were great as well and looked homemade and not like it came from a frozen bag. There is paid parking around the area. It was a 60 degree day but with jackets on, the weather felt amazing. When we had stepped into the restaurant it had felt too stuffy, so I am glad we got to seat outside. read more

Brunch today was at The Porch which is a Southern brunch right in Midtown Sacramento. The staff was warm and welcoming. We were seated outside which was lovely, especially given the weather and the slight breeze. I appreciate that they offer an option for reservations. Many brunch places do not do those nowadays, which I hate. Every brunch requires a coffee. I appreciate that they do lattes here, rather than just hot or iced coffees. They had some unique syrups, such as bourbon caramel and praline. The syrups were on the more subtle side, which some people prefer. I am not one of those people, but it was a good latte for a breakfast/ brunch spot. I wish there was more ice tho.  The skillet cornbread with sharp cheddar, creamed corn & garlic, honey butter & house made seasonal jam on the side was a great starter dish. I enjoyed the garlic and cheese. The temperature/ toastiness of this was yummy.  We couldn't decide between the cornbread and the sticky bun, so the only obvious solution was to order both. Came down this week for the first after hearing good reviews about this place and was honestly pretty disappointed on what we had and the experience as a whole. Do make sure to make reservations before coming in, luckily a table opened up and the host was able to get us seated promptly. The seats we were given were near the bar and it was only the one bartender taking care of his bar and the tables which lead to not having the best service. Again we get it was the bartenders area but you would think since it's the weekend you would have two bartenders working that area. When it comes to the food, my wife's brisket Benedict was pretty solid nothing crazy but my meal was probably the worst one.... When I hear the words " anything scramble" i think of a bunch of ingredients mixed together as a scramble. This was more of just scrambled eggs with some fried avocados on top. These breakfast "potatoes" were also dissatisfying and flavorless. I've worked in the restaurant business and can tell you that I hated when people sent plates back so I'm not one to send my plates back and make complaints, but this one was very close to me breaking that personal rule. Well, this was a hard review to write. There were good things, so-so things and bad things. I ordered the biscuits with gravy, over easy eggs and bacon on a Thursday, late morning. Took forever to get my food. I'd say 25 to 30 minutes. The server was quite friendly and pleasant and brought my iced tea promptly. When I finally got my breakfast, EVERYTHING was cold, including the eggs. The trick to breakfast is everything has to come out at the same time and be hot. They missed on this one. So it went back to the kitchen and even though I said, just warm it up, they started completely over which took another 20 minutes. Fine. By this time, I was really hungry and excited about the biscuits and gravy that I had been craving. So, I finally got my food after almost an hour. The eggs were done perfectly. Gravy was delicious, (even brought me extra), bacon was really good, loved the potatoes, but the big downfall was the biscuits. They weren't even edible. Hard as rocks and tasted like flour and water. Kind of ruined everything. The server did a great job, but I'm wondering if maybe he left my plate sitting in the kitchen too long the first time, not sure. Suggestions: Get a new recipe for the Biscuits, Serve food on Hot Plates. Make sure food gets served immediately, when it's HOT. I might return, but definitely not for the biscuits. read more

I hadn't been to The Porch in years, so I thought to take my best friend here since she was visiting from out of town and rarely gets to eat Southern-inspired dishes. To start, the beignets caught her eye on Yelp, so we didn't hesitate to order this sweet treat for starters. What's more are the fresh and sweet berries, pineapple, and oranges were perfectly paired with these beignets that were not overly sweet and not fully covered in powdered sugar. Our server was so easy to chat with and took time to answer our questions and talk about the menu. We were convinced to order the brisket and biscuit and all I can say is WOW. As soon as we took a bite of the brisket with the biscuit, the flavors popped in our mouth! We thanked our server for giving a high recommendation for this dish. I have enjoyed my share of shrimp and grits in different restaurants in different cities because it is one of my fav Southern dishes to eat. Hands down, their shrimp and grits is now in my top five fav! I added a sunny side up egg, so this, plus the combo of the gulf shrimp with bacon, cheese, diced tomatoes, green onions, with porch bbq sauce, truly gave me Southern brunch comfort. I decided to add tots and I'm so happy I did because their tots are extra crispy, making the tots a scrumptious addition to this mouthwatering dish! I love the Mardi Gras theme of this restaurant and it brought back memories from when friends and I ate here often many years ago. So many ups and downs at this place. We loved the Southern charm/ambiance and the attentive wait staff, but the food was kinda all over the place. Offerings - Biscuits and Gravy: Rather basic and a bit on the salty side. The biscuits were quite dense. Also, breakfast potatoes here translated to a baked potato with a bit of Parmesan on top. - Shrimp Po Boy: This was amazing and we would definitely come back for this. I've been to The Porch before for a Dine Downtown and the food was much better then. Perhaps we caught them an off night, or maybe the regular chef was MIA, but they were out of half the menu items for the Sacramento Vegan Chef Challenge, which was the reason we came. No Hushpuppy Veggies. No Cajun Baba Ghanoush. No Vegan Gumbo. The Blackened Maitake Mushroom Pasta I ordered also had substituted ingredients and fell flat on flavor. A shame for $23. That said, the service was fantastic and so were the vegan Cajun fried beets we ordered off the regular menu. The Banana Beignets, however, were a complete letdown of dense fried dough that tasted nothing of banana. Luckily the $17 espresso martini that I confirmed was dairy-free was heavenly. While I appreciate that The Porch has vegan-friendly items and participates in the October Challenge, this was a pricey letdown. I really hope they do better next year. read more

Amazing! First time here. The food was delicious. Our waiter made some great suggestions. We tried the beignets. Delicious! And they were shaped like little piggies I ordered the berries French toast. The whip cream on top was so good. There was a sweet fruit puree served with it tasted so good. Came here to end a busy work week and get some yummy food on a rainy day! We came in for lunch and were seated right away. We were given brunch and cocktail menus along with the regular menu. It was a bit of a chilly day and the front door kept swinging open sending a chile to where we were sitting but other than that the decor was warm and cozy with farm animal paintings and statues and wood chairs. We came in on Sunday for Father's Day lunch. We were told it would be, "about an hour" wait. The man that was the host took our number and said he would call or text when a table was available. We had two small kids with us- but we really wanted to eat there so we walked around and tried to kill time. After 50 min, I called the restaurant to check on status whereupon I was told they had no seats for us and we could not be accommodated. We waited and killed time bc he said we would be contacted within an hour when a table was available. When the food arrived, the chicken was overcooked and cold, the waffle was soggy, and the fries were also soggy. We arrived right on the dot for our 11:30 reservations on a summer Sunday morning. Party of five. We were immediately seated upon arrival. First impression was Wow, this is a loud place but we were upbeat for a nice meal. We were immediately pleasantly greeted by Dan with menus and water in tiny mason jars. Dan answered a number of questions about asssorted dishes and their ingredients. Three of us are not into southern food but as guests of our host couple, all our questions were addressed. Our appetizers, Beignets and Fried Green tomatoes arrived in about 20 minutes. The Beignets looked enticing on a generous bed of assorted fresh berries consisting of blue, black and strawberries. The Beignets were dry, though. They would have been much better if they were filled with a custard of some sort, but maybe that would have required a name change to 'Eclair'. The Fried Green Tomatoes were nicely breaded and rested on a bed of shredded and chopped lettuce, feta cheese and a spicy 'Memphis Dressing' that looked like thousand island but with a bite. Also included was a slice of bacon and a hard boiled egg. The texture of the Fried Tomatoes was nice but the tomatoes themselves tasted flat, without much flavor. Would we reorder these appetizers again? No. They didn't 'pop' or generate endorsements from us. After a long wait, the main courses arrived about 40 minutes later and at one point Dan stopped at our table to tell us that our order was now next in line to be prepared by the kitchen. We ordered two Shrimp PoBoys, one Brisket and Biscuit, one Banana Foster on French toast and one Traditional Breakfast of Waffles. The Shrimp PoBoys, one a half order and one a full order, were ordered with unsalted fries but they were coated in black pepper instead that had to be rejected. We couldn't see any size difference between the two sandwiches. One wasn't anywhere close to double the size of the other. The breaded shrimp was bland and just slightly warm. The melted cheese was hard, dry and cold, the thick bread roll was dry and couldn't be picked up and eaten without all the lettuce and shrimp squirting out. The bacon slice was overpowering. The contents of this PoBoy just aren't a great marriage with this style of roll. Would we reorder the Shrimp PoBoy? No. The guest who had Brisket and Biscuit said the BBQ sauce was very overpowering and didn't actually enhance the enjoyment of the dish. Would they reorder it? No. The guest who had the Traditional Waffles has to ask for a side of syrup as it was served with none. By the time the syrup arrived, the waffles were cold. The texture of the waffles was hard through and through. One expects crunchy outside and soft centers, but not these. They were hard and dry. Would they recommend it? No. The Banana Foster French Toast was acceptable but the banana flavor was very weak and the powerful sweetness of the dish was mostly a generic sweet flavor. Would they recommend it? No. Ambient noise level comment: Our rectangle table had the five of us seated two across from three but the two end guests diagonally across the table just four feet apart were unable to talk to each other for the entire meal due to the loud background noise. The brunch took just over two hours. The food did not hit a 'home run'. Food was either cold, hard, and ingredients didn't compliment each other. Attentive offers by the food server for ice tea and water refills were non-existent and had to be requested. Request for sweetener was ignored. The management's decision to not offer an actual lunch menu disappointed us but the fact that they were packed tells me that others approve. I guess this was the wrong restaurant for us which is not their fault. I generously give The Porch Restaurant and Bar in Sacramento two stars. read more

We came to The Porch for my friend's birthday and I was unfortunately disappointed. I ordered the Low Country Lemonade which was probably my favorite part of the meal. It came with alai vodka, blueberries, lemon juice, simple syrup, Sprite, and muddled blueberries. I thought it was a solid cocktail. For entree, I ordered the Biscuit Sandwich with Bacon. Visited The Porch for a friend's birthday and we had a great time! The front is decorated well for Christmas and all of the staff were super friendly. We shared a half order of the beignets, which are shaped like pigs! Soo cute and tasty. The fruit was fresh and we loved the mango and raspberry compote as well. I hate to do it, but I have to do it. Let's start with the pros. Fantastic chicken and waffles, chicken was really crispy and well seasoned, delicious beignets, and I loved the cornbread. Also the service staff were all really nice and comped our appetizers because of the long wait. With that said, I won't be back anytime soon. The wait was 30 mins for a table with a reservation, food was another 45 min wait, they ran out of plates and silverware, the restaurant was LOUD, had to yell across the table, just overall wasn't a great experience. Was invited to The Porch for a business dinner, and while I normally would not seek out Southern food, this place completely surprised me. Everything we ordered was delicious, and I would absolutely come back on my own. I started with the grilled brie, which was incredible. Honestly, I could have eaten just that and been satisfied. Someone else at the table ordered the fried tomatoes, and since it was my first time trying them, I was curious. They were crispy, flavorful, and a great introduction to something new for me. For my main entrée, I went with the catfish and jambalaya. The portion was generous enough that I had leftovers to take back to the hotel. The flavors were solid and comforting. Others at the table ordered the shrimp po' boy and the brisket meatloaf, and everything looked so good that it made me want to come back just to try more of the menu. We also shared the skillet cornbread. It was good, though a bit different from what I am used to, since I grew up on the store box version. The strawberry jam paired with it was a great touch and definitely elevated it. Someone ordered the collard greens and said they were the hit of the table, so that is already on my list for next time. The vibe definitely had a Southern feel, warm and inviting. Service was attentive, with servers refilling my sweet tea multiple times, and the food came out in a timely manner despite it being a group dinner. The fried green tomatoes were a bit over breaded but otherwise quite good. Our server was attentive and pleasant. However the person that brought our appetizer completely forgot plates and I had to hunt him down to get them. We ordered a banana pudding to share. With Southern food this is always a great way to end a meal. However, this was not the pudding that most people are accustomed to- even though there were vanilla wafers on the side. It had an odd test and texture- extremely sweet and didn't taste like bananas. It also had blueberries in it. It tasted more like a parfait. I definitely would not order again. Went to The Porch for the first time on Mother's day. Slow service, but the worst thing that happened was. After waiting more than 30 minutes for our food. My pancake had dry crumbles of unmixed batter. On top of being slow and inattentive the waiter made an excuse that the cooks were really busy. They opened at 9:00am. And we had 9:00am reservations. We had the best post graduation brunch/lunch experience here at Porch. Very close to downtown. Only little bummer here is the parking situation but today was Pride celebration + NO KINGS + UC Davis Commencement 2025 all at the same day and time so lots of police and closed off streets. The parking is street and metered and towards the back of the small restaurant and you pay thru the QR app by scanning the photo QR and punch in your license plate number just don't park in a marked reserved spot. The food here is southern not an extensive menu with pics but a small condensed menu with a variety of offerings for your southern palette. They have cheese Brie s , beignets, and chicken and waffles all very good and applauded by our party. Prices are not astronomically high either it was fine. Inside has open kitchen , cute little bar . They accommodate us a party of 9 for reservations next to the front door. It didn't seem too tight at all ,plenty of elbow room. I ordered the biscuits beef brisket eggs Benedict. Might sound funny but the 2 small potatoes they came with it were very tasty probably the best potato's I've ever had-covered with Parmesan crumbs and other seasoning , very good. Service was excellent they asked questions , refilled waters offered drinks. They do have a mandatory gratuity for parties of 6 or more I believe so be ready for that. Everyone loved their food here and it was a memorable lunch celebrating a graduate. Very kick back and enjoyable not loud at all, very safe area around the downtown perimeter. I went to this restaurant today with my friend Cynthia for my birthday. I'm met the Kevin and Lisa, they were very friendly and explained the fresh menu. They've only been open a few months but they got a wonderful review. I understand from my friend Cynthia in the press Democrat. The food that we had ordered was delicious. I had ordered the jam on buerre and Cynthia ordered the special soup, salmon bisque and savory grain bowl with tea. The meal was fantastic and well presented. I took photos below. We had a reservation for 11am, got seated right away, and got our drinks (coffee and cocktails, all of which were good) pretty quickly. Our waiter was friendly. This is where it took a turn for the worse. We ordered our food pretty promptly after we were seated and weren't served until almost noon, so it must have been taken at least 45 minutes to get our food from the time we ordered. And when we got it, it just wasn't good. The portions were large, but one of my friends and I both ordered the chicken and waffle, and the waffle was dry and the chicken was overcooked and underseasoned. Neither one of us could eat much of it. For the price, we were sorely disappointed. I would not go back. I'd give a lower rating if not for the saving grace of the friendly waiter and good drinks. read more

There was also another party celebrating a birthday. This restaurant has amazing cocktails, and delicious food. I've been a few times over the years and really enjoyed each experience. This latest experience included brunch, where we shared full beignets, ordered cocktails, and chose our bite to eat. Our server, Skye M was fantastic, giving us recommendations and communicating with us about being a bartender and a server during that time. Unfortunately, the first disappointment was finding out that the vegan menu was only available for dinner, not brunch. That was never made clear. The vegan options available on the regular brunch menu were extremely limited, which was frustrating given the occasion. Once the food arrived, it went downhill from there. The vegan food was not good at all, and surprisingly, even the non-vegans in our group were unhappy with their meals. Overall, the quality of the food has noticeably gone down. I don't know if ownership or management has changed, but this is not the same Porch I remember. With a party of 8, this was not the brunch experience we expected, and it was a major disappointment. Great brunch spot to kick off our Napa trip. We were able to get reservations for brunch and enjoy some night mimosas. I got the chicken and waffles and they were kind to accommodate wanting more of a half order. Everyone else enjoyed their Benedict's and food. Service was great inside the cute shop. read more
