Arrived Boston yesterday for our daughter's college graduation this coming weekend. Came to Portland, Maine with my husband and in-laws. Have been looking forward to eating lobster- it did not disappoint. It tasted very fresh and sweet. The potato salad had very good flavor. Best place to pick up local lobsters, hands-down! It's a locals favorite spot, and one we're happy to stop by a few times each time we visit OOB. Lobsters are reasonably priced, and you can pick them up cooked or not. Their sides are REALLY delicious. The lobster bisque is must, and the clam chowder is a close second. If you want cooked it can take a while, so if you're in a hurry and want to take it with you it's best to call ahead. Usually takes 20-30 min to cook them up. Highly recommend! read more

While my friends and I were eating at Trenton Lobster Pound, we got a tip from some lovely elderly ladies sitting next to us on a lobster tour about this place. When we got back to Portland, we decided to check it out and boy were we glad that we did. Bayley's was one of the first companies that shipped fresh lobster so I suppose it started off as a lobster business, but they have a restaurant connected to it and it's pretty great. Their twin lobster meal, clam chowder, steamed clams, and lobster flatbread were some of my favorites. The servers are super nice and the food prices are great. Went to Baley's Lobster Pound a few times over this past summer. Lobsters, steamers were fresh with great prices. You can have your order cooked to go or take it with you to cook yourself (same price). The store has many items in the frig as well so you can get your entire meal here with salads, soups, and seafood. I would highly recommend getting your own here and bringing it back to your campsite, hotel, cabin, rather than eat out at a higher priced restaurant. The Baley's do it right from their campground, seafood, ice cream they serve with a smile and are friendly and helpful. Customer Service and having a good vacation is what they aim for. read more

GREAT spot. The bugs chased us away from our seats on the dock. (BUT that's because there was no wind at that time that we sat down right before close/dusk.) I took my clam chowder and lobster to go and enjoyed it on the beach. My wife took brought her lobster roll. and did not enjoy it, but we loved the clam chowder with a side of bread. You can order lobster without any sides, which is what I would recommend. A "medium" order is enough (w/ a small soup) unless you plan to share. Then I would go with the "large" order Also a very nice price for lobster à la cart. But note: I don't believe the lobster was listed on the menu as an option its own. I made a mistake. Our last lobster meal in Acadia National Park was at the Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound, and a group of nice ladies at the next table heard us talk about our search for the best lobster, and recommended Bayley's when we got to Portland. We came here before the place opened on Saturday and had a wonderful time, so we came back Sunday and had another wonderful time! The restaurant sits next to a body of water and in the morning there is a light fog that makes the scenery look like it's out of a painting. The menu has quite a few options compared to other lobster places we've been to. Some of the things we tried: - Twin lobster meal in medium and select: didn't really notice the difference in size, we got the soft shell both times because someone who worked there told us it was most likely sweeter. We were also recommended to not get the monstah because the meat may not be as tender. TBH I'm not a lobster connoisseur and this tasted pretty similar to other lobster meals we've had, but the price was hard to beat. The corn was really good too! - Lobster flat bread: I really love this!! It's slightly crispy on the outside but soft in the middle, covered in cheese and lobster meat. Would go back just for this. - Lobster bisque: I personally don't prefer clam chowder because it's not sweet, but there was so much lobster in this thing!! If you like lobster bisque this is worth it. - Clams/Clam Chowder: I approve. - Lobster roll: This was just ok. There's also a little store where you can buy lobster (among other seafood things) to go. Service was great, everyone was super friendly. Bugs from the sea The Bayley family has been catching lobsters and digging tasty things out of the sand for a long time. At first for their own use but around 1915 they started selling the extras to the public and have been doing it ever since. The seafood is caught locally and processed right in Scarborough, so it just can't get any fresher or more inexpensive. This isn't really a restaurant in the true sense of the word, most of the orders are take out. However they will cook your bugs for you it you ask them and then you can take them to the lovely deck in the back of the building and sit outside and make a mess by the water. Although Bayley's is known for the incredible lobsters they also have other sea bugs like clams, scallops, steamers, crabs, shrimp and some great chowder. A wide variety of different sea creatures for every taste. Bayley's is a must visit for anyone going to Scarborough and if you happen to know someone that never had lobster before this is the place to take them. Everything here is about as good as it gets and the prices can only be better if you go out and catch the critter yourself. read more

We found this place driving around on Grand from Old Orchard Beach - thank goodness!! Bayley's was amazing: The beer was good although I was a little bit ticked off by the plastic, branded beer cups (why not glass or straight from the bottle?), the chowder (I think this was the best NE clam chowder from our entire trip!), the lobster (what was this called, "tha monsta"?), the people (nice staff and great patrons.) We buy lobsters and lobster rolls from here every summer. Now they have a little bar on their pier and tables to eat on. Everything I've ever ordered from here has been yummy. Lobster rolls, crab rolls, shrimp rolls, all on chewy fresh rolls. Today I had a steamed 1 1/2 lb lobster that came with an ear of corn. It was $13. You can't beat that! An incredibly wonderful experience at Bayley's Lobster Pound purchasing lobsters to take home. We had stopped by Pine Point Fisherman's Co-Op prior to our stop at Bayley's to purchase lobsters, and ended up having to walk away. We entered Bayley's and were immediately surprised at the quantity of lobsters compared to Pine Point. The price range was the same for both locations although Bayley's actually had soft shell lobsters for purchase [we didn't purchase these since they can't be transported live] in addition to have literally five times the amount of lobsters! We gave the employee helping us our price range and she was immediately able to point us in the right direction, tell us the average weight of the lobsters we would need to purchase and picked out four beautiful lobsters (she even asked us for sex preference!) Although I've eaten lobster before, I'm NOT a native Mainer and had a lot to learn, this was my first purchase and cook at home experience. I also have an odd fascination with insects and started asking a LOT of questions since, after all, lobsters are the spiders of the sea. The employee helping us was extremely informative scientifically, you could tell she was passionate about these critters and wanted them treated humanely until the end of life. She even pointed out a lobster that had just lost its shell the night before and let me hold it to test the soft shell [the lobster wouldn't be sold for another 2 weeks or so to regain collagen]. Then she picked up a bright orange, one clawed lobster, geneticly abnormal because of it's lack of the carotene that makes 'brown'. She's going to donate this unique lobster to the aquarium after showing it off during the season. As a lover of knowledge and food, I really couldn't have asked for a better experience. My favorite lobster roll in Maine!! This place is truly a hidden gem and a favorite of locals. It's a small shack down in Pine Point that's grab-and-go (though they have opened up a small restaurant next door.) They sell all sorts of fresh fish, clams, mussels, shrimp, and crab, but the main reason to come is the lobster rolls. They're big, fair priced, and incredible. Discovered this gem when we staying at Bayleys Camping Resort 7 years ago. The restaurant is a little "Bait Shed" on a tiny pier at the lobster pound where you can enjoy a gorgeous view of the marsh while eating delicious lobster. We started with clam chowder. A bowl of it for $8. Very good. It could have had more clams though. Next was a single lobster roll. It's a hot dog roll big enough for the one pound hot dog but filled with lobster instead. The single had a good amount of lobster but not full at $28. A single lobster dinner came with a 1.5 lb perfectly cooked lobster, an ear of corn, a small roll and a tiny dish of potato salad. Oh, and melted butter of course. Even the legs were big enough to hold sweet meat! $31. Finally, the lobster flatbread. A creamy garlic sauced pizza with 3 oz of lobster for $28. My wife and I ordered (2) two pound lobsters ($130.00) and (2) fillets mignon (50.00) for a total of $180.00 and had them shipped to her for her 85th birthday. When the item arrived the delivery man did not even ring the door bell. They kept looking for them and found them on the door step. This is South Florida and it is hot and with porch pirates these days. Her friend even drove 40 miles to his home to get his big stock pot. When they opened the package that evening, there was (1) two pound lobster and (2) fillets mignon. I called Bayley's and asked what happened and the girl said "did you order online"? I said yes. She said "sometimes this happens when the item is ordered online". ??? When you see $130.00 for lobster it should be a no brainer that it's more than one 2 lbs. Lobster that goes in the box. WOW! I will say they did offer to send her(1) two pound lobster but that is ridiculous since there are two people in the household. Instead I took a credit. I have used Bayley's before and always been impressed. But I was very disappointed in the delivery as well as the customer service. Nice local pound. Good selection. Not the best prices around but not horrible. They will cook them for you if you'd like which we usually do. Staff is okay. Not the friendliest but certainly knowledgeable. Good selection of sides to round out your meal. Potato salad is nice. Coleslaw too but beware, it has onions. Chowder and Bisque are excellent. Sometimes we just go over at lunch, get a serving of each and drive over to Pine Point to eat it on the beach. They pack orders to go very well. Would love to see some better dessert selections so I can get the whole meal there. We usually end up going somewhere else to pick up a pie. They also sell cute bird houses outside. If you're visiting Portland, I highly recommend you skip all the lobster places downtown and drive the 15 or so minutes to Bayley's. A whole lobster is ridiculously cheap. You pick the size you want (small, medium, select), and they'll have it ready for you in minutes. Price was something incredible, like $8.99/lb, so your meal will likely end up being a third of how much you'd pay in Portland. Their clam chowder and lobster bisque were amazing as well, so make sure you get some to go when you leave! Their tables are situated on a lovely deck that overlooks a marsh. Enjoy the views. I have been going here for 7 years. Last year they got outdoor seating and I am not exaggerating when I say that 3 of us ate 12 lobsters on the deck. I don't remember exactly how much it was, but I do remember it was ridiculously inexpensive for the memorable feast. We went to the wrong Bayley's since we did not know that practically everything in the town is named Bayley's...well not everything but we past this Bayley's, a Bayley's camp ground, and a Bayley's Seafood Restaurant. Who knew that a small town in Maine could have so many Bayley's places. The food was very disappointing. The lobster roll had too much bread and the roll was not toasted. My suggestion is that they minimize the roll but keep the amount of lobster that they put on the roll. The clam chowder was the most disappointing of all. So much sand and so bland. There was absolutely no flavor in the chowder even after adding a packet of salt and pepper. There isn't any seating, but they have quite a few bottles of wine. They also have a lot of fresh seafood which you can take home to prepare your own fabulous meal. They're prices are extremely reasonable during off-season times. Restrooms: There are none! read more

LOOOOOVE Bayley's Lobster pound!!! We are Seasonal Old Orchard Beacher's! And this is the place we end up every weekend! We always get out lobsters here and take them back to our place and cook them up with our pot. Our guests love it! We also get steamers and they are just delicous.
