I've gone back and forth here - the location is prime! The decor is superb! Some days you get excellent service! Most days, however, the service is lacking. They're not kind or attentive or friendly. They're often crowded and it's hard to avoid feeling in everyone's way. The drinks and food can take ages. You can't hear when your name is called. Even if you do hear when your name is called, and they are not busy, it still can take 10 minutes to get a breakfast sandwich and the egg is cold. Today's experience was exactly that - 9:30am on a Monday, limited customers, 10 mins to get a sandwich with hot bread and cold egg. Not quite worth the bang for your buck when it's a tiny little bread roll that costs ~8 bucks - when you add bacon, egg, and cheese. I want to love this place, desperately, but I'm continuously disappointed. Please stop serving cold eggs on breakfast sandwiches, I beg of you! read more

Never been to New Orleans but let me just say that Bayou Bakery is a "we got New Orleans at home" energy and I DO NOT mean that in a bad way. I went with my friend because she's been meaning to take me. Inside was such a nod to New Orleans from the decor to the flags of notable New Orleans sports teams (e.g. The Saints). And I am so glad we did. We ordered breakfast sandwiches + beignets. The beignets were fresh and hot! Also ordered a latte and really enjoyed that. This place does get super busy really quickly so keep that in mind if you come. Also it gets REALLY hot in there so be prepared to feel a little warm if you're dining in. We came here for lunch after a court hearing as the courthouse is just down the road making this a very convenient location. We were a party of four and when we arrived it was not busy but business picked up during our meal. THE DEAL: 100% self service. You order at the one counter , pick up from another counter and you seat yourself. SERVICE: The staff were so-so meaning not rude but definitely not friendly either. We felt like we were bothering them so not very inviting. FOOD & DRINK: We only tried two sandwiches as two of us got BLTs and two of us got Muffulettas. The BLT was meh with way over cooked bacon but the Muffuletta was good. Specialty coffees were weak. AMBIANCE: Great homage to New Orleans (Nawh'lins) and the Bayou and there is lots of awesome attention to detail. My colleague asked me what I got and when I told her I got the Muffalotta, she said, "I make the mistake of going there and getting that like once a year and it's never what I hope for." Perfectly describes it. It was dry and overly salty. Tons of meat, sure, but not tasty and the meat wasn't flavorful cold cuts... just salty. The olive spread/chopped olives were okay. There was very minimal cheese. Good portion size but meh. I also ordered the everything croissant... and like... it was okay but I think it came in at like $7-8. I wouldn't get it again. I love the beignets here, and they are usually the only food item I would get. However, for today's eating pleasure, I also got a biscuit with an egg added. You can't go wrong getting the beignets, bringing them home, and drink your own coffee while eating them. They are chewy, perfectly sweet with powdered sugar, and if you don't watch out, the powdered sugar can get all over your face. They are a great treat once in a while when I visit DC. The biscuit and egg was good. I think I could just order the biscuit by itself and have some strawberry jelly on the side with some butter. Service for today was good. No one was in line before or after me, so I was able to ask the young man behind the counter a question. The ambiance was quiet this morning. Very vibrant sit down cafe with Nola fare. Gumbo was pretty salty, but the gumbo I've had in New Orleans were also very salty so maybe that's how it's supposed to be? Portion size was not too big, so it allowed us to try other things. They sold out of the smoked douille dog and we went with the muff-a-lotta samdwhoch instead who h was pretty good. But def get the beignets. 3 big ones for $5 is a deal and they were well made and fluffy. Not sure if I'd come back again for food but def for coffee and beignets. Bayou bakery seems to be a pretty popular spot, as it was packed fairly early in the morning, and there are lines to order if you don't get there early. When you walk in, you place your order at the register, pay, and then seat yourself at an open table. When your order is ready, they call your name to pick it up at the counter. Omg. I don't even know where to start. I've had beignets in New Orleans (Cafe Beignet) and the ones from Bayou Bakery definitely satisfied that craving!!! The mufaletta was everything I could ever want in a sandwich. It was piled high with quality meats, served on a delicious roll, with mayo and yummy olive tapenade. It was bursting with flavor, and definitely one of my new all-time fave hot sandwiches! I was torn between ordering this or the Arm Drip (roast beef Po Boy, looks similar to a French dip). I compromised and ordered the mufaletta with a side of the gravy that comes on the Arm Drip. (They don't actually have the option to order the gravy on the order online menu. I requested a side of gravy in the "notes" section (alone with extra mayo). It didn't occur to me that they have more than one type of gravy, ha! When I arrived to pick up my order, the lovely human who greeted me (Karla) asked me which kind of gravy I wanted, and was able to quickly add a small cup to my order for just $1. I dont expect much as far as customer service, because I know first-hand how rough it can be to work those jobs. You'd never know it based on my interaction with Karla. She was all smiles, extremely friendly and personable. It felt like having a conversation with a friend as opposed to a business transaction. I have nothing but good things to say about this place. I cannot wait to return and try more items. I definitely want to dine-in sometimes as well. The seating is somewhat limited but its got a cute ambiance. I definitely need to try their baked goods sometime. Oh! They sell yesterdays leftover baked goods for $2! How fun! Love that, because not only do you get a good deal with the "old" pastries, you know everything else is freshly baked that day! The BEST beignets! Served warm and flavorful, their beignets are a must-try if you are in the Court House area. Ample seating inside with relatively quick service considering the fact that they seem to make beignets fresh-to-order. While we only visited for a quick breakfast, it seems that this location would also make a great remote work space as well. Drinks- the only thing we liked was the frozen coffee. The grapefruit + jalapeño drink sounded interesting but it didn't have any kick to it, very grapefruit heavy. Treats- Beignets & pralines were our favorite (as it should be at a New Orleans themed place) Food wise - They were out of just about all of their specials, & seafood. the gumbo was incredibly bland. One of the best little New Orleans style is in Arlington VA. Easily accessible from Courthouse metro (orange and silver lines), Bayou will be a welcome stop. I like Bayou, but there are definitely strengths and weaknesses on the menu. The avocado tots benedict is one of my favorites, but when I last visited I didn't spot it on the menu (could be a weekend-only dish). Of course, the beignets are a classic. Their coffee is also good, and I will typically get a latte with one of their house-made syrups. However, I found their pimento grilled cheese lacking. Unfortunately, the cheese was cold in the middle and while it was a very generous serving, it was hard to eat a ton of cold pimento. The gumbo was also okay but I found it salty to the point that I had trouble finishing it. I'll definitely come back to Bayou, but will aim to stick to the classics and their breakfast items. There's a ban on laptop use during the weekends, when it's most busy, but it was easy to find a table to work from on a weekday. One additional strength of Bayou is their vibe - I find a lot of cafes in the area to be pretty sterile, so I appreciate the warmth and uniqueness of Bayou. read more

A beignet brunch is a great way to start the day. The beignets were warm, fluffy and sweet, covered in powdered sugar. We also had a bacon, egg and cheese biscuit. The biscuit was great as well as the bacon. Your order is placed at the counter and you wait on the opposite end of the counter to pick up your food when your name is called. It seemed like the many of the patrons were just using the free WiFi and not ordering food just coffee so the tables don't turnover as often. We were able to get one of the smaller tables. Bayou is a terrific neighborhood place with excellent food. For me it's very special because I love New Orleans and I feel like I have been transported there every time I go to this place. The beignets stack up against Cafe du Monde. I also love the veggie sandwich - it is so garlicky delicious and not like any other veggie sandwich you've had. From time to time I pick up food from the refrigerator to bring home like the Cajun meatballs or jambalaya or pimento cheese and in the summer a great way to cool off is with the delicious sno-balls. And of course there are the sweets. You have to get a King cake here during the Mardi Gras season. Also, the pralines are just like in New Orleans. Review update: When I came here originally I only got pastries and coffee, which I enjoyed. I came back to try out some of the other food and in rating has dropped a little. We tried the beignets and the avocado Benedict- honestly would pass on both of them. The beignets had far too much powdered sugar on them; even after scraping most of it off but it was still far too sweet. I'm not sure what I was expecting from the avocado Benedict but a poached egg with minimal sauce over freezer tater tot's was not it. Granted it was less than $10 but would definitely skip that one. First off when my dad and I walked in about 40 mins before closing , the waitress seemed impatient , stern , and annoyed that we were in the restaurant before it closes, so that's an immediate red flag and the service wasn't the best either , the whole vibe of the place just felt off and the mood was very dull. Next off when we ordered our food we ended up paying almost $6 for 1.5 eggs when we ordered the deviled eggs , talk about a rip off especially when the menu didn't even say how many eggs would be provided , absolutely disgrace and robbing your money straight up! The sandwhich I ordered was good which was with turkey and greens so that was pretty solid , but the gumbo I tried that my dad ordered was straight up had no taste, wasn't even warm , and didn't taste that good at all. The egg was my least favorite part--it had a rubbery texture and came in that overly processed square shape that felt unnatural. The turkey sausage, on the other hand, was flavorful and well-seasoned, so that was a plus. I'll definitely be coming back to try some of their freshly baked goods or another item from the menu.
