Reno local here! This place was fantastic. Great server, good food and done in a timely manner. I had the vegan mushroom burger -- I was a little sketch at first to try but my server told me it was a best seller so I gave it a shot and had 0 regrets. I had fries for my side, plus a bunch of other sides. Their cole slaw was tasty, potato salad was fire, and their mac and cheese was mid (not your typical mac and cheese). We drove 6 hours on a road trip to Boise and this is the first restaurant we wanted to try. I have heard so much about it and was excited to try the food. It did not disappoint. I feel like this restaurant was created with my family in mind. We have a meat eater, a vegan, and 3 kids. The menu has meat bbq dishes, vegan bbq dishes (cooked separately from the meat), and kids meals. There are even vegan side dishes (squash, coleslaw, cornbread, Mac n cheeze), and vegan desserts (chocolate cake, bread pudding, ice cream). So there are plenty of vegan options here (even more than I listed). We got the pulled pork sandwich for the meat eater, vegan foot sandwich for the vegan (tempeh and vegan Mac n cheese), and grilled cheese sandwiches with fruit on the side for the kids. Everything tasted good. We also got some dessert to go. vegan bread pudding a la mode with vegan ice cream. Very yummy. This restaurant is family owned and operated, started locally, and also has happy hour and daily specials (my photos have more info on that). It is a sit down restaurant with waiter/waitress service. But it's not a fancy restaurant with table cloths and glass, so it's totally fine for kids. I wish we lived closer, but the next time we are in Boise we'll be back to BBQ4LIFE! 2nd visit: my family visited Boise again and we went back to barbecue for life for a second visit. Took a group of 15 here for a work lunch. The service was great and the waitstaff friendly. My pastrami sandwich was wonderful. We ordered the nachos and covered fries for apps and everyone enjoyed them. My ice tea was quickly refilled when it got close to half. I don't remember the name of the sandwich but the guys sitting closest to me had it. It has Mac and cheese, meat, thick bread dusted with powdered sugar and maple syrup. Didn't sound like something I'd like but they devoured it a few of ordered desserts and I could smell the lemon of the lemon bars across the table and will get one myself next time. Asked her if she got a negative test before she came back to work and she said she hadn't been tested. 1) Well then how did she know she had COVID? 2) How did she know she was safe to go back to work? We chatted for a while and she subscribed to all the conspiracy theories. Said she won't get vaccinated. Trusted the internet over the advice of her doctor. She made the argument that no one REALLY dies of COVID...they die of something else. Nice service, terrible food. The meat and barbecue sauces are very bland. The coleslaw is disgusting -- dry and full of jackfruit I believe, in order to appeal to the vegan crowd somehow. No bread is served with the barbecue. The barbecue sauce is too sweet and also bland. The veggie burger fell apart into a mess as soon as it was picked up. Yuck. What a disappointing and overly expensive meal. Somebody here needs to learn how to cook, or visit a southern barbecue restaurant and learn what this food is actually supposed to taste like. This review is based solely on a catered event where BBQ4LIFE provided the meal. I have a friend who loves their restaurant, and raves about it + they have good Yelp reviews. So, I was excited for the opportunity to try their food. I loaded up on tri-tip and pulled pork because I love both. But neither had flavor. I could smell a smoked scent, but the tri-tip was somewhat bland and dry. The pulled pork was more moist, but it wasn't anything special. Pulled pork needs the sauce, of course, and they had a nice selection of Chiver's barbecue sauces to go with. The raspberry barbecue sauce was delicious. The potato salad was standard. The mac & cheese was creamy and good - but not great - and had some heat to it. They had Franz rolls which were big, fresh, and delicious. So, I didn't get to the jalapeno bratwurst. I did take them to go though, so when I end up having those, I'll report back. Based on the food here, I'm 50/50 on if we'll try their actual restaurant. However, cooking for a large event provides additional challenges in keeping the food from drying out, and just being consistent in preparing so much food. This place was recommended to us through a friend, and it was OK, but I've had better BBQ experiences. One of us ordered the broodwich, meat wasn't very evenly distributed and there was no cheesy flavor to the mac and cheese. The side of vegan Mac had more sauce, but I seemed cold/not very fresh. I ordered the BBQ nachos, and they weren't the worst nachos I've had, but they weren't the best. Definitely didn't feel like there was any distinction from these BBQ nachos from regular nachos. Hardly any barbecue sauce, drowning and soggy from the amount of cheese and tomatoes, and adding any kind of BBQ meat to the order would've costed extra. The MacnCheese was an edible, upgraded version of Kraft, but the bad news is the BBQ ribs and sausage were the worst I've ever been served in a restaurant, on six continents. The ribs were way over cooked, falling off the bone, and too dried out to eat, even with sauce. The sausage was under stuffed, and sagged like a limp noodle. "Vegan BBQ" when in fact they have 2 options that are vegan that honestly don't even make sense. nothing meat related for vegans. Pictures and comments on their so they say "old menu" on their reviews are not even remotely up to date with their current menu. Everything that lead my family and I here was from their menu online which each item was unavailable. Speaking solely as a vegan, I'm sure their food is fine. They accommodated a late person to our party with ease and took the time to explain all of the food options. Please don't let the word Vegan on their sign worry you. I went with a group of Yelp friends for our monthly night out at a different restaurant. BBQ4LIFE recently moved from Curtis Street to a spot in the Vista Village. The new location looks a lot better for them. I had a half-rack of pork ribs and was surprised by the amount of meat. A full rack would have lasted for days. The ribs had a deep smoke flavor and tasted great. The potato salad was also good, but some of the pieces of potato were rather large and were a bit undercooked. The nachos appetizer was good but the chips didn't seem to be warmed before serving and I didn't care for the small amount of barbecue sauce added to them. The staff was friendly and attentive. Damn. Practically perfect BBQ in the middle of nowhere. I ordered the Meat Sampler ($28) so I could get in on all the goodness. Let me just say that the tri tip steak was p.e.r.f.e.c.t. Soft and succulent. Amazing. I also really liked the rub they had on their ribs. Tasted like brown sugar. A nice touch. The pulled pork was decent, but I preferred the other two meats. In addition to their regular sauce, I asked for two of their hotter sauces. The hottest one has ghost pepper in it, so a little goes a long way. Why can't this place be located in Seattle? As great as Seattle is supposed to be for vegan food, we have yet to find a non-Asian one that is truly great (the vegetarian/vegan Asian food here is pretty spectacular). I don't know if that claim is true, but what we had was excellent. Extra star for serving up delicious BBQ that my husband can actually eat! My husband went for the BLT (with tempeh), and I went for the smoked squash sandwich. He was a bit disappointed with his because he had asked that the veganaise be left off and it wasn't. I maybe should have taken a star off for that, but I thought the sandwich was a great representation of a BLT. As for my smoked squash sandwich. Oh my. I have never eaten anything like that before and it truly made my week. Fantastic. As for the kids, not being vegetarian my son ordered the pulled pork kid sandwich and my daughter the mac n cheese. Coming from Texas, bbq is kind of a big deal. So upon looking up bbq spots in Boise, we landed on BBQ 4 Life and I'm glad we did. The minute we walked in I heard classic rock music and I knew this was the right place. We were promptly greeted by the hostess and then our waitress, both were super friendly. After looking over the menu we landed on the champion fries (recommended to split between two people) and the meatball sandwich (also good to split between two people). Both foods were nothing short of delicious! The fries needed a little more bbq sauce for me but thankfully the tables have a bottle of sauce on them so I poured away. The pulled pork and mac and cheese are a perfect pairing for the fries. When it comes to the sandwich, the meats were seasoned perfectly and the bread was soft and not hard with crumbs falling all over the place, which is usually the case for the type of bread a meatball sandwich is served. Overall, I was hoping the meats would have a more smoky flavor and nicer bark but I was glad everything was moist and succulent. The atmosphere, created by the amazing waitstaff and picnic bench seating, is very welcoming. If I could make a recommendation on décor I would say to get rid of the carpet. read more
