This WAS a 5 star until I saw one of the ladies who makes the sandwiches eat some jerky and go back to making sandwiches without washing her hands. :( ugh. She just wiped her hand on a towel. BUT I like that it's been around for a while, the sandwich I had was good (I tried their namesake, The BB Classic on Sourdough, good stuff) AND there is Charger stuff galore around AND the place is packed at lunch, so you know it's got to be consistently pretty good. You know how in action movies, there is the unassuming character that no one expects to be awesome (like spiderman) but when he's called to duty, he blows everyone's expectation away? BB's Deli is like that. It's really small from the outside, I think two tables. I actually walked right by it when I first went and I was going there on foot. I don't remember which one I ordered the first time... because I keep ordering different things and EVERY single sandwich is so darn good (examples: cordon bleu, BLT, spicy beef). Mind you, I never tweak my sandwich in any way from the menu. Sandwich was OK, but service was inconsistent. When I was a new customer (earlier in the day) the guy and woman behind the counter were seemingly nice. When I came back with my return, the attitudes were much different. I was nice about my return. I always smile and I'm always kind. The rude retorts were unnecessary. I try to be appeasing and make sure I know what I want before I order it. I go out of my way to specify no mayo at delis regardless if it is on the menu or not. I HATE mayo. It makes me sick as soon as I swallow. In short: Mayo came in the sandwich. I wait in line. I smile as I hand it back. Instead of fixing order, I have to argue whether I asked for the item or not. Then when he says he'll remake the order, he still has to have the last word. Add insult to injury, I TRIED to rectify the situation myself but it was too much mayo to remove it all. Plus it alrdy wet the bread. So bizarre. I would have eaten there often if it weren't for that. I couldn't enjoy the sandwich after. This is going to be my first lunch choice when I'm in the area. First the lunch rush is crazy. I arrived at 12:30pm and there was a line of about 7 people and maybe 15 people waiting for their orders. So you just know it's going to be a while. It took about 15-20 minutes to get my sandwich, which I'm okay with because i knew they were really busy. The guy there was really nice and friendly. So customer service is great. I got the egg salad on toasted sourdough with a pickle on the side. It was so delicious. Not too many egg salads make my list, but this one is. Good food. Good service. I work downtown and there are so many sandwich spots near me. Most of the places near me are mediocre. I was walking around and decided to stop here. This place is legit and service is quick! However, phone in your order if you don't want to wait. Bread and ingredients are pretty delicious. Pricing is not bad and the sandwich portion size is pretty big. If you buy 6 sandwiches, you get 1 free, so don't forget to ask for the BB Sandwich Club card. I totally recommend this spot if you're looking for a good sandwich in the area. The sandwiches are very big for a good price. The meal is only 1.50 more, and is a good deal. I got a BLT, on sourdough, the bacon was good, there was plenty of lettuce and tomatoes, but not so much mayo. The sandwich wasnt AMAZING, but it was good, and it was a good deal. This family owned deli is one of best delis in Downtown San Diego. The mother and son are very hospitable. If you have never been before, it's a small place with a few tables inside and out. Be careful not to overlook... it can be easy to miss. They have plenty of options from breakfast and lunch sandwiches, soups, salads, snacks, desserts, candy, and beverages. We are bummed that we no longer work or stay near downtown as we used to stop by here almost every morning to get breakfast for ourselves and for our friends. The bacon, egg, and cheese croissants were our favorite. The lunch sandwiches are great, as well. You can't go wrong with any of their offerings. Portions are good. Prices are very reasonable. We still make it a point to drop in and treat ourselves to some breakfast or lunch every now and then. Despite our long absences, we are still remembered and greeted warmly when we show up. 3.5 stars. Came here with a coworker today and picked up a Spicy Beef on sourdough for around $6. Warm toasty bread with a generous portion of roast beef on lettuce and peppercinis. Horseradish mustard, mayo, and tomato keeps it from getting dry and it all comes together pretty well with some Swiss. I've definitely had better roast beef, as it was a bit dry and tasteless. But the sandwich all together was enjoyable enough, especially for the price. Didn't get the soups, but the ones on other tables looked bomb. Definitely need to try them next time. Line gets long at lunch as expected, but they work fast. Might not be a place to sit though as there ate precious few tables. Also a place for Chargers fans to talk pigskin if you're so inclined. If you're feeling like sandwich on your lunch break and you work around 5th, definitely give BB's a try. read more

While working downtown for the past 6 months on a construction site, I noticed the lack of good places to eat that were within striking distance from the job site. Well, there's a Mexican Taco Shop across the street that's totally lackluster in its food and a convenience store with a very limited selection. Yeah, I brown bag it most of the time but sometimes I want to eat out for lunch, especially on paydays! Luckily, some of my work crew found BB's Deli around the corner. BB's is a very small deli with limited space and seating. Nothing upscale or fancy to be found inside here, just the bare bones basics but its the food that steals the show in this place. BB's is known for sandwiches and my, do they make a tasty one! Some of the sandwiches I have tried are the Cordon Bleu, the pastrami, and the spicy beef. The pastrami, beef, and chicken were tender, juicy, and well seasoned. The veggie toppings were fresh and flavorful and you can order your sandwich on your choice of bread. It also comes with a pickle on the side. For just a buck or two more, you can upgrade your order with a soda and your choice of chips. To beat the lunch crowd, you can order ahead of time on the phone and come in and pick up your order. Also they have a card....buy 6 sandwiches and receive the next one free! The people that run the deli are very nice also. The only real complaint I have, and it is a very minor one, is the spicy beef sandwich. Although tasty, the spicy sauce or mustard contained a very heavy dose of what tasted like horse radish sauce. It was a lil overpowering and I must admit that it did clear out my sinuses during that meal. My husband had the Ham, mortadella, and salami sandwich in onion roll. Very good. My daughter had the chipotle chicken sandwich which was really good. Friendly quick service. I can get more for less at Subway but again the food is pretty good so I am forced to come here every so often. Nice workers but very small and uncomfortable place to eat.
