We were thrilled to find two seats at the end of the bar when we arrived. As luck would have it, the two gentlemen next to us eventually left, allowing us to slide over and enjoy an even better view of the TV for the rest of the game. I started with a Tito's and club soda, but unfortunately, something seemed off--perhaps the club soda was flat. The drink just wasn't good. To their credit, the bartender took it back without hesitation and was very accommodating. I then ordered a Negroni after the woman sitting next to us highly recommended it. I don't usually drink gin, but this cocktail was absolutely delicious and changed my mind. Since we were there for several hours, we shared an order of zucchini and eggplant chips and happily snacked on them throughout the game. The atmosphere was comfortable and welcoming, with a nice mix of ages and people enjoying the evening. We made sure to leave our bartender a generous tip since we occupied our seats for the entire game. Even though the Knicks didn't pull out a win that night, we certainly didn't leave defeated. I'd happily return for another game, cocktail, and fun evening out. And maybe even get dinner there. Little did I know there was another big room in the ack once you past the restrooms. Our return visit was a completely different experience. I appreciate the way the owner handled the situation and his willingness to have an open conversation with us. It doesn't change what happened that first night, but it did change my impression of how much he cares about his guests and his business. I wanted my review to reflect that as well.

Whoever's behind the bar here has been trained or grew up around it. Food's better than a second-floor pub between 5th and 6th has any right to be. The JRB burger comes on a house-ground patty (they grind in-house, and you can tell, loose texture, actual seasoning), caramelized onions cooked down all the way, not just softened, good cheese pull. Fried pickles on the side had a crisp cornmeal shell and stayed crunchy under the burger juices, which never happens. Buttermilk chicken salad was the surprise. Chicken actually brined, crust stayed on, greens weren't an afterthought. Only real knock: music was loud. Not sports-bar loud, more like the bartender's playlist got away from him. Fine at the bar, harder at a table if you want to talk. Room's got real bones. Reclaimed barn wood, old rail track as a foot rest, that big 45-star flag on the wall. Been here almost 20 years and it's aged into itself. For the neighborhood the pricing's fair. Beats P.J. Clarke's on the burger, loses on quiet. Go for a beer and a burger, not a date.

I used to love the food and company at the Beach. No longer. I'm a conservative and the restaurant is known as being something of a safe heaven for GOP hangers-on, since there aren't many of us in the neighborhood to say the least. But lately this place has become a real festering pit of the worst of the MAGA crowd: anti-immigrant, racist, hateful speech everywhere you turn. This is maybe not the fault of ownership, since they are nice people, but the clientele is now annoying at best, despicable at worst. Last time I dined here I was next to a few 20-something bankers talking about Charles Murray and the Bell Curve and why their Black co-workers were only hired due to affirmative action. Over by the bar another guy was wearing a t-shirt with a homophobic slur I will not repeat here. NYC needs more diversity of political opinion and needs more, er, 'safe spaces' for Republicans to hang without shame. But the Beach Cafe now feels like it's run by Tucker Carlson in collaboration with Richard Spencer. Naming a burger after Roger Stone?! This will not age well. Management might want to reverse course a little before this place becomes an actual hotspot for the Daily Stormer crowd. Yikes. read more

Hey there so on August 13th my colleagues and I went to this place to say goodbye to our coworker. At first the place was empty and we filled up the place with our presence. So far it's a good vibe until we separated into the dinner party ate inside and the happy hour group stood outside. So as we drank we started feeling nice and got loud and laughed and enjoyed the moment. Well this began the starring, the snickering, the signaling, and basically the discrimination. Our group consisted of whites and Hispanics. You could sense that they wanted us to leave. A passing by elderly women told one of our colleagues to hush, utterly dissect full, ugh!!! This is a nosy ass WHITE OLD LADY walking her dog of whom she was strangling smh. She cursed at us really low and told us not in her neighborhood go be loud in our neighborhood sighhh.. And not one cop when you need him!!!!! ONE LAST THING THE WAITER SNAPPED A PICTURE WITHOUT MY CONSENT.. I JUST GOUND OUT UGHHH... LIKE WTF???? I decided to have lunch at this place with my sister and 6 month old baby, since they had outside seating and it was beautiful weather! There was no one outside, completely empty, so I went into to inform the wait staff that I wanted to sit outside and get menus. A guy approached me and I informed him I needed a table outside for two (2) and a baby. He looked at me confused and told me that I had to wait a moment so he could confirm. He asked for whom I assumed was the manager or owner to speak with me; this guy had the nerve to inform me that they do not allow strollers inside (which I completely understand), but that they also do not allow strollers in the outside seating area. Now I could understand if space was limited outside or if it were busy, but THERE WAS NO ONE SEATED OUTSIDE! I think this is completely ridiculous, they should basically say "NO BABIES/CHILDREN ALLOWED". I will never give this place my money, period. read more

I can't tell you how the food is at the Beach Cafe. We never got a table. We had my 2 1/2 year old and 7 week old baby with us, and I asked for an out of the way table in their outdoor cafe area. The host immediately informed us that they have no high chairs and have a no stroller policy. Basically they have a no small children policy. If I could give them zero stars, I would. If you have small children or sympathize with those who do, stay away from Beach Cafe. We went to 5 Napkins across the street. Excellent, friendly service for all ages. Stopped in here for a late lunch a couple weeks ago on a very hot and humid day and had a very pleasant experience. I came with a family member & they ordered a simple breakfast plate with eggs and toast & I ordered the Cobb Salad. The food came extremely fast & at first we were skeptical as to if it would be edible and good but it turned out to meet beyond out expectations. The staff was very friendly and the restaurant overall has a very nice and uniqe interior. If you are looking for a late or light lunch spot on the Upper East Side, I definetely reccomend Beach Cafe. read more

Since we are "Beach People" thought we'd try Beach Cafe during recent weekend in NYC. Quite possibly WORST DINING experience ever, anywhere. Surly hostesses were truly menacing at the front podium. Backed up by flagrantly anti-semitic owner David Goodside (how ironically inappropriate) he has NO goodside. Horrific service not worth the wait for spoiled oysters raw wormy salmon. Me and my friends really enjoyed the food and I really appreciated the fact that we did not feel rushed to leave our table after we were done eating. I have been here a few times before with a friend or two because the drinks are great and the noise level is low and perfect for conversation. The staff is great also. I never leave a bad review but we had such a terrible time getting served and the waiter was so rude. They forgot to seat us like someone else here wrote, barked at my husband because he had a hat on and told him to immediately remove it and then when the meal came, it was the smallest thing you've ever seen. I love this place. I tend to get out of work very late and always need a great restaurant in my neighborhood that will make a nice dinner for me to take out. I highly recommend the Penne Bolognese or the turkey burger and after meeting the welcoming owner and the talented manager I will be going back there quite often. You can usually walk in and get a seat. Most of the wait staff is super nice. But they're not as attentive as some other restaurants, even when the place appears slow. Some of the waiters also forget or screw up any modifications to orders - "hold the onions," "salad instead of fries," etc. They nail any orders without modifications. Again, I'll keep coming back. You should too.

Who do they have in the kitchen? "Mister" Albert Johnson from the Color Purple? I tried to be polite, but the waitress still copped an attitude. Also, there was a sandwich board outside that clearly announced a happy hour, but then I got back my tab that charged me double the price I was expecting because "it's the World Cup" even though there was absolutely no indication anywhere that the happy hour was void because of the game. (I've paid 15 dollars for a beer before! That's fine! But I absolutely despise false advertising.) Moreover, one of the patrons was a complete ass about me having to squeeze past them even though they had parked themselves in the busiest section of the bar. Terrible vibes. Go anywhere else.

It came with the traditional sides: veggies and Yorkshire pudding. The meal came with a choice of appetizer. For me, I chose the fois gras on toast, which was oh so buttery. The star of the show was the sticky toffee pudding. It was so decadently sticky, caramel-y sweet. I loved it. Oh, and our meal came with this wrapped gift that you pop open for a surprise! We had loads of fun here. If you're looking for something to do in the city on Christmas day, try this!

Still, we tried our best to be understanding and flexible, and eventually ended up getting squeezed into a makeshift table (which we had to request to be wiped down since it was brought in from outside). Servers bumped into us numerous times during our meal as well. Our server thanked us for being amenable as it was a Friday night during Restaurant Week. But, my guest ordered off the regular menu (since she didn't want to contribute to food waste); her sole pasta dish ended up costing $30 (the three-course pre-fixe menu was $45). I was surprised that our drinks, at least, weren't comped for the situation we helped to solve for them!
