The Surfin Bird is hands down the best. Great turkey, topped with bacon, fresh sprouts, veggies, and cream cheese. All held together in a soft roll. Beach hut deli is among the numerous sandwiches in Davis, but it's nothing special. It is one of the few places to eat near Target, but I would rather drive a little farther to get a better sandwich. I tried a surfin bird and it was just mediocre. I prefer either Zias or Mr Pickles. Also, although the meat was stacked so it looked like there was a lot, I don't think the price was worth it. If you wanna be cheap and eat cardboard with fake mayonnaise, you go to subway. If you don't mind spending a few extra bucks and getting great quality food, come here. I went a few days ago, and the staff is usually upbeat. I enjoyed that while busy, I was able to watch my favorite L.A. team in basketball (it rhymes with Lakers....guess who) losing yet another game. That being said, they let you mix and match. Before here, I would never thought you could improve upon roast beef by adding both cream cheese and BBQ sauce, but that was one of the best sandwiches I ever had. The only point off is for the soup....not that cheap, and it just didn't taste good. I couldn't put my finger on it. I guess their tomato soup was too acidic, I guess. Several things wrong with the food here. 1) Overpriced- almost $20 for an XL - sheesh! 2) Sauces - the sandwich was overwhelmed with too much bbq sauce, way too much mayo. Really a shame cause the meat and bread were quality. People that know nothing about food assume all these sauces in huge amounts will make food better. The key to good food is simplicity. 3) Coke machine was out of 75% of flavors. 4) Cleanliness: the workers were using their bare hands and wiping them with these disgusting rags. Gross! read more

It pains me to write this post since I first fell in love with Beach Hut Deli back in Roseville, but I've had nothing but issues with my sandwiches at the Davis location. So on 11/26 I thought it would be nice to get some Beach Hut sandwiches for dinner for my son and myself. I was a little wary because the last 2 sandwiches I'd gotten at the Davis location to go had been muffed. Still, I love the sandwiches so I ordered 2 large Beach Combers with mustard, turkey and bacon for the meats, and Swiss and cheddar for the cheeses. I love the shop, and enjoy watching the flat screens while I wait for my order. The wait was pretty short, so I took my sandwiches and headed home. When I got home and opened my sandwich up I was sad to see that I was disappointed for the third consecutive time. There was mayonnaise, not mustard, and there was only Swiss cheese... No cheddar. What really disappointed was the amount of meat on the sandwich, and Beach Hut is known for their generous amounts of meat. So on my large I had 4 slices of turkey and 1 strip of bacon... It looked like a Subway sub. Sadly I won't be going back, but if you place a to go order make sure to check your sandwich before you leave with it. read more

Wow. Just wow--and not in a good way. This location is consistently bad. I've been there 4 times total and ate a sandwich from there 3 of 4 times. The first three times I ordered inside and waited no less than 35 minutes each time. Occasion #1, they were pretty packed so it was understandable that things were taking longer. I was peeved by the lack of communication and effort to provide customer service but again, they were busy so it wasn't a big deal. Occasion #2, the standard lunchtime crowd was beginning to form, but I got there early and it still took about 40 minutes (even though there were 5-6 people working behind the counter?). Same thing the 3rd time and I vowed to never go there again. Over a year later I decided to give it one last shot in case there was enough staff turnover or revamping for the place to get better. Nope. I placed an online order circa 10:20am for an 11:30am pick-up time. Given my experience with their (lack of) timeliness, I ran an errand and showed up around 11:45am. Three people behind the counter, all looking burdened by the fact that a customer walked in. I said 'hello' and waited awkwardly for some hesitant service. It was like none of them wanted to go to the register, and were waiting for another coworker to cave and finally help a customer. Employee greets the DoorDash person behind me before helping me out, then tells us that they are very behind and it will take about 10-15 minutes to have my order ready. Disappointing, but consistent. I asked for a refund and the employee said I could do it through the app. I asked why I had to download the app to get a refund (this was a web order) and couldn't they do it in-store? The employee reluctantly agreed to do it and voided out my order. Needless to say, no more Surfin' Birds for me in Davis. Pro: - I've eaten there 3 times and didn't get food poisoning. Cons: - Minimum 35 minutes to get a sandwich when ordering in-shop. - Online pre-orders are pointless. - Bad service. - Sad, tense vibes inside the shop each time I've been there. Best sandwich shop in town with very nice employee's, great atmosphere and decor. You cannot sit anywhere and not have access to a television (awesome). This has been one of my favorite places to get a sandwich. Today that changed with finding a long hair in my sandwich as I took a bite of the second half. My stomach turned. I took the sandwich back to the counter and saw that the main person making sandwiches had a very long ponytail. The gentleman that took my sandwich ask if he could make me a new one, but really I don't think I could think about eating it without remembering the first. Then we were told it would be a 30 to 40 min wait, because of a lot of online orders. Would of been 5 stars but had to do 2 and here's why. This is the third time in a row I have ordered a sandwhich to go that is suppose to have Italian dressing on it, only to come home and find out that there is none. Just a little annoying when the menu says the dressing comes on the sandwhich and it is consistency missing it. It's part of the reason why I like those certain sandwhiches so much. It's kind of ridiculous to be paying almost 15 bucks for a sandwhich when the staff can't even match it to menu 3 times in a row! This place serves frozen food. They don't have a real kitchen, i'm guessing its only a microwave at the back.

I can't believe this place received 4 stars. We were traveling through the area and used yelp to help make choices. I guess locals are used to having poor quality food heated in microwaves. For the price, the chips were stale, sandwich was on cheap bread, cream cheese was a condiment for everything and the staff do not wash their hands after touching their hair or blowing their nose. My suggestion, just hit target's grocery for a sandwich or the AM/PM for a nachos. At least those places you will get the quality of food at the price you pay. read more

Just left from picking up my online order. When I got there I went to the pick up counter where no one greeted me, and stood there waiting to be acknowledged.
