Honestly a banger of a dive bar. Free Bingo on Mondays, Trivia on Tuesdays, and Karaoke on Wednesday. This has become my new Monday ritual if I'm off. I'll go to The Comber for Bingo at 7PM on Monday because its free bingo with free prizes and good vibes. I love the culture of whenever someone wins some kind of snacks they walk around and offer it to everyone in the bar. It just has such good energy and a good time. Its a full service bar with fair prices. The staff is friendly and accommodating. They don't serve food in the bar but you can get food from nearby restaurants and some will even walk it over to you. The bar itself is a classic dive bar feel. Tons of TVs. Large age differential, mostly younger people but not all. They have a pool table and plenty of seating but beware bingo night does get busy! read more

We made it back to The 'Comber. It was every bit as fun as it was the first time we went earlier in the spring. Everything good except no coffee. No Irish Coffee. No anything coffee. So, no, I don't have a second choice. We'll, I do, but it also has coffee in it. So big faux pas. A bar without coffee. Dirty old dive bar where I had my second drink for my 21st birthday several decades ago, I don't care to number them but it's back when Larry Himmel had his old show "Biff and Skippy" on TV, and he used to pop into the Comber once in a while. As a poor young single girl, my roommate and I would drive in her old beat up VW bus to go here to drink with the college boys, watch sports on TV and then go next door to get slices of pizza (that place is STILL there.) Afterwards like around midnight, you stagger of to The Pennant (now gone) - to go drink cheap canned beers on their upstairs deck. Those days like my youth are now gone but I have fond memories of the 'Comber. So while I was recently "Pre-Rona" days staying at The Dana Inn I thought I would jog down and get a cold glass of Chardonnay. Ahhhh nice bartender, older clientele, no cute college boys but it was early like around 3:00ish, but I didn't care, there was still sportsball on the tv and it was like a type of homecoming. I reminisced about the good days, chatted with the lovely bartender who was very friendly and then took off. They have Trivia there, my husband and I may head out when all this quarantine stuff is over, I could use a good night in a smelly old bar at the beach. read more

Came here for a friend's birthday a few weekends ago & there was a live band, and it was an absolute BLAST. I may have been the youngest person there but there was no lack of energy by any means. Aloha, there are 2 bars in walking distance from our Airbnb on Mission beach, the Beachcomber has better beers, nice IPAs, yes! Only drawback is no food, but they do let you bring in. And now that we know there's food next door, we'll be back. Fun "beachcomber" funny money was seen passed around, not sure how that works, but would love to become a regular to find out. It's a chill spot for sure, but does have a night scene. During the day you can relax, grab a drink and do what you do....then they have theme nights that are cool. Bingo, trivia to dollar beers.... It's always a good crowd. I will say when it's college time, the students will fill the bar up in the evening hours, haha. So it definitely has multiple facets, just pending what your scene is... I've noticed it's basically a different bar each day and time of day.....but always worth a stop in....never know what you'll experience. Staff is super awesome! We went for a drink and no one helped us or did any so we left and went to the sandbar and had the best lunch.

Nasty, disgusting, flat expired drinks. I should've ordered bottled beers. Drinks & chasers tasted like they were from the owners cupboard from 50 years ago, wouldn't be surprised if I saw cockroaches or flies inside the liquor bottles... Owner was a dickhead. Oh Comber? Yeah comber is a great time....until you want to leave more than anything in the world and the bartenders pretend that they can't see you. Oh but you just want to close your tab? Doesn't matter, they won't be helping you for 30 minutes and it's your job to stand at the bar till they notice you. So what if you are the tallest person and physically raise your hand so they help you. Doesn't matter, they have more important stuff to do like helping every other person close their tab before you. "Maybe they didn't see you!" Oh really? Is that why they pointed at me and said that they "got me" and that my tab would surely be closed soon? Nice! So I came here last Saturday night with some friends and had so much fun! This place is awesome, they have a pool table which is definitely a plus and the music was great. Joe was so sweet and generous with all the song requests, I loved that! The bartenders Sam and Parker were super friendly and quick on their feet. A little part of me will always call Comber home. As a graduate of the University of San Diego, I think I can safely say that some of my greatest (and blurriest) memories all somehow involved Comber. It is what it is. A dive bar with cheap drinks and free popcorn. There are really only three types of crowds you'll see here. 1) USD students 2) Older people (aka the Senior Moments trivia team) and 3) 30 somethings celebrating their birthday in a way that clearly shows they're trying to hold onto their college years. But beyond the sticky dance floor, Comber's a great local bar to dance, drink and hear the Comber song at closing. I love it. read more

This older dude at my office told me I HADDDDDD to go to the Comber when I went down to SD last month. The only time I had available to go was on a random Tuesday in the middle of the day (around 2 pm), so we sauntered down to Mission and made our way in. My sister and I walk in and we are the ONLY people there, save a Tweeker in a Taz shirt playing pool by himself and humming REO Speedwagon. My sister starts bitching about how far we drove (she lives in Hillcrest) and teasing me about how "cool" I said the bar was going to be. We sat down for a drink despite the limited ambience. The Greyhound I ordered was strong and good. I could feel life running through my veins after one. Our moods improved. Then, the coolest, most unexpected thing happened! About 15 old men, ranging from age 65 (the youngster in the group), to age 92 come into the bar and start drinking and talking shit to each other. Apparently the Mission Beach Athletic Club, a group of older dudes who work out and hang out in Mission Beach, are legends at the Comber. They were awesome and LORD did they love us! A lot of the guys were ex-Navy and since my sister is a Squid (and a foxy one, too), they had some stories to share. One guy was 80 and still does code work for the city and was sitting at the bar going over blueprints while drinking a Bud. Another guy had been a Chief and was kind of smitten with Rose. We had a ball....actually, we didn't want to leave. We both agreed that we felt like we had 15 new grandfathers. Rad! read more

For a seriously great time with chill people, cheap well and draft beers this is the place. Best spot to hit up if you have Fridays off because Thursdays seem to be the best day to come party here. It has a dance floor and a back area where people have made it into a drinking game place, mainly Flip-Cup and Beer Pong but what else do you need when every one is blitzed and having an amazing time. Trust those who Yelp regularly... The same old Dive Bar it's been for 20 years. We came in after the polar bear classic volleyball tournament this year, celebrating a few birthdays, and had the place to ourselves mid afternoon. The bartender gal was fantastic, and took great care of everybody single-handedly. She alone might be the reason this bar is still in business. It doesn't feel like the cleanest place, there's no food served, and the furniture is a little wobbly... Still, it's a good local spot. Definitely recommended read more

The last time I went to the comber, a bouncer approached me, and asked where I had gotten my drink from. (it was sitting on a table in front of me, and it wasn't mine). I told him that it wasn't mine and that it had been there for awhile. He grabbed it and whipped it across the room into the garbage can. Uh... It was so aggressive! I got my friends and we left. I'm not sure if it was a brand not sold there or what. But I felt as though he didn't believe me and took it very personal. The back of the bar needs to be cleaned and the bartenders have their favorites that they will serve first. Alas Beachcomber, your glory days of ridiculously large 32 ounce beers on Fridays are behind you. Why have you scaled back to 12 ounce domestic beers for 75 cents on Friday nights? Gone are the beer pong tables and DJ's. The back half of the bar now has a fake fireplace and a winter diorama for the winter holidays. Our hero had to do a double take when he saw how this dive bar was trying so hard to become just a touch classier. This place is no longer much of a dive, as it is more of a retirement home where septuagenarians hit on what few clueless college girls come here... in a really creepy kind of way. PROS: - The drinks are still cheap. - The popcorn is still free. - The old folks are pretty cool to talk to sometimes and will tell you about their lives spent as a traveling plastic surgeon or how they founded the Old Mission Beach Athletic Club. CONS: - The washrooms are still really dirty and the floors are really grimy. - Poor drainage out front. It pretty much floods in front of the entrance to the bar when it rains. - It's pretty much like an AARP social club. read more

They let in underaged college students. I've seen some of the fakes and unless you're completely blind there is no way you can believe the IDs are real. To the owners, I recommend to start caring about your liquor license and stop letting teenagers inside. The ABC department love making surprise visits anytime. read more
