They put the dive in divey. It can't get much divier than this. They are open Mon-Fri 12pm to 2am and Sat-Sun 8am to 2am. They serve food everyday until 8pm - sandwiches, burgers, wings, and even ceviche. Tons of college students were here the night we came in. It was absolutely packed. The people in it was super friendly. They all seem to be locals or college aged. They have multiple floors and a patio so if they decor as soon as you walk in, isn't your style, there are other areas you can head to. The drinks were pretty decently strong. Very odd place - ran by locals. There is nothing more I like that a local watering hole, but this place is ..just..so..odd. We stopped by on Sunday to watch World Cup game. Five people, pretty large tab. We ordered multiple food items and drinks. When my friend stopped by at the bar and tried ordering mojito, she was verbatim told, "we do not do fancy shit like this here". Bartender also appeared to be under influence but nobody seemed to care. Then asked for a regular juice flavor for margarita, we were denied right away. Food was border line nonedible - very salty chicken tenders with still cold jalapeno poppers. Overall atmosphere meh. It feels like time stopped there and froze at 1990s which could be played off cool, but this place is just poorly ran and solely relies on regulars. Great bar food, super friendly service, spacious, wide vibe range, super close to Mission Beach! Two floors -- one with a usually busy rooftop deck, most of which is shaded. Both floors but especially the first have a nostalgic New England decor, all the way down to the creaking mahogany furniture (in a genuinely pleasant way). Burrito was pretty good for bar food, and both service and security were very kind. Have to go to the back of the first floor to order from the kitchen. Limited menu for a restaurant but reasonable range for a bar. This is low key bar with strong drinks and so- so Mexican food. You have to order food downstairs at a window and they got my order wrong! I ordered flautas and received taquitos, not a huge deal. The down stairs bar is pretty dark and unwelcoming, the rooftop has a lot of direct sunlight. When we were there they were playing rock music. read more

I found this neighborhood sports/ dive bar on my recent trip. I was looking for a liquor store to buy alcohol, looked up and found this place instead. During covid the downstairs bar area is closed. In order to be allowed in for drinking you have to order food, good thing the foods good. You place your order downstairs and they bring it to you upstairs. Upstairs you'll find a lively group of locals and several TVs playing sports. The first time I came in I ordered a gyro salad.. it was delicious. The second time I ordered the pastrami sandwich & fries, also delicious. The bartenders stay on top of keeping your glass full. I didn't see a drink menu or any fancy drinks with umbrellas. Cool upstairs patio with nice views of the ocean. The patio is o my open certain hours during peak season, so if you're in the area, it's worth the stop to enjoy a cold beverage and watch the waves. The food I sampled was pretty standard bar food; wings, fried shrimp, etc. read more

We went to pennant yesterday after visiting this bar many times over the past couple of years and I'm so disappointed to say that the service was horrible. Especially with beachcomber next door with great service, affordable drinks, nice bartenders, etc I will never go back to this bar. We were doing a bar crawl for one of our friends 26th birthday and when we walked in the bouncer and some bartender took our designated drivers ID, who is 25, because she was fun out of state- took the id, refused to accept second form of identification even a passport/CC, refused to call the police, etc. We get they need to do their jobs but when I tell you that the pennant staff was yelling, condescending and rude that is an understatement. There should never be any sort of service like that especially for a group of 20 celebrating a birthday, with every person being 25-26 yrs old, and refusing to either review other ID or call the police. If you've made it this far in my review, I hope you choose any other bar to visit lol. Pennant is not worth your patronage tbh. Try beachcomber instead haha read more

Aloha, when down at Mission beach, fun bar you can walk to from the airbnb, nice. Our friendly bartender was super nice & fun. Great that there's food in the back by another vendor. Super friendly regulars, of which we moved seats so they could squeeze in next to their friends & they bought us a round, wow! And if no room at the bar, go on upstairs, just as fun & nice up there. So I must start with this story first. I swear on my life that I once ordered a beer from the Pennant and it was covered in poop. The bartender pulled the Corona from the ice and it was covered in a brown caked on substance. I smelt it and it smelt pretty horrible. Maybe it was mud. I don't know. But it certainly was not pleasant. But then again, this is the Pennant we're speaking about. The Pennant was the location for many a fun night in college. Until they started letting a ton of underage students in. I heard stories of people using their Torero ID cards to get in. So after all of this, why the four stars. The Pennant is home to many memories for USD students. It's has no where near the nostalgia of Comber but it comes pretty close. It was fun. Divey. And a good time. Reading through some of the previous reviews, I find it funny that people don't like this place, mostly for the same reasons I DO like this place. The one thing I can't stand about living in San Diego is its lack of dive bars at the beach. Because I live at the beach and I like dives. I'm sick of the touristy Guava Beach with their overpriced drinks and crappy food. The pennant has something those places don't, LOCALS. They have a rooftop bar, the owner has had it for 30 years, and the place is just cool. The tuna melts are the bombbbb too! Plus the first time we were in there, the owner bought us drinks. After the gazillions of dollars I've spent at the other Mission Beach spots, I've NEVER gotten hooked up with anything. Sure, it's got that dive bar smell and feel. It's a dive bar! Steer clear of this place. I never usually write reviews, but had to come here to say we had the worst service I've had in all of SD. The place on a Wednesday night wasn't busy, but it took about 25 minutes to get a drink. We felt ignored by the bartender, saying she would come to us next and then I would see her back-stocking the bar instead. Service was so slow that I gave up. My boyfriend finally got her attention and ordered a beer. However, when we got our bill, it showed 3 beers. I've been going to the Pennant for two plus years regularly after volleyball on Saturday mornings. I usually recruit anywhere from 5-20 people from our group. I have spent thousands of dollars on drinks and food, as have my friends. I am known by my first name by Bullet, Ferfer, Nicki and Brandon. They are all great and treat me with respect and I think they are very good bartenders. Today I had a terrible experience. Around 2-3 pm my volleyball crew of about 8 went upstairs for food and drinks. We all ordered multiple drinks and food. I had three beers over a couple of hours. When I decided to switch things up and order a skinny Margarita, I went to the same bartender who served me the three beers without incident ( Lisa ). After I ordered a skinny Margarita she said "blow your Skinny Margarita". I thought she was joking because it is somewhat of a labor intensive drink to make. But she wasn't joking and told me that a previous time I was there, she had made a few for me, but then couldn't get my card to work and had to pay for the whole bill out of her own pocket. I was completely taken by surprise by her reaction and this story. I told her I had no idea that had happened and I was happy to pay her right on the spot for what ever I owed her, without even checking to see if it was legitimate. She refused to let me do that. So I just cashed out my bill, gave her a 50% tip on my three beers and preceded to get my drink downstairs. The bartender downstairs was friendly and happy to oblige. Needless to say, I was flabbergasted by her attack on me, accusation and incredibly rude behavior. If management doesn't reprimand her for this behavior, then I will take all of my volleyball crew who come there every saturday and go to another bar or restaurant in the future. I was having a wonderful birthday week, great day at the beach, was playing amazingly for my age today, all to be ruined by this incredibly unhappy spiteful bartender.
