Basement is the one word I would use for the look of this bar. Nothing is done up about this place. There were a ton of guys at this bar. Sausage fest! I loved the $1 beers and cheap shots. The DJ could use a little work but not to bad, he played everything that I and my friends requested. The night was going well everyone was having a drunken good time up until all my friends and husband got into a bar fight because some guys were creeping up on me and my friends. My girlfriend got slugged in the nose. UGH lets just end there. The rest of the night was hell. We left the bar in a hurry after that. Chill dive bar with a decent, laid-back vibe. Seemed to be a real pickup scene amongst vacationers. Karaoke heavily featured. Staff seemed pretty friendly and the beer was cold. I love these kinds of bars and this one does not disappoint. read more

Ah, the Beachcomber. Two dollars for a 32 ounce beer from 8-10pm on Fridays -- it is very difficult to beat this deal. I give the Beachcomber one star for each dollar of that beer. This is the place to get drunk quickly and get in a fight even more quickly. Once I came here, and the front of the store was flooded. Was it the toilet? Nah, that just happens during high tide. I adore this bar. We live two blocks away and can't get enough of it. It's everything we've been looking for in a bar for 2 1/2 years now in SD. There are definitely some of those college-ites causing drama on Friday and Saturday nights, but really...weren't we all in their shoes at some point? We just experienced the opening of Karaoke Wednesdays last night for my birthday, and although there were about 9 of us there, including the bartender Dane and his trainee Erin, it was one of my favorite nights I've ever had in San Diego. Two out of five stars is correct. How yelp informs, I've experienced better, is exactly what I'm thinking. Far from the city, and far from downtown, you can probably find yourself in a place like this where not that many clubs are adjacent so you're left with just one "good" choice. Still, I think it's a poor choice. This just strengthens my understanding why it's better to have options. Also, as my cousin blurts it, "you'll feel like the black crayon of the coloring box." The demographics of this night bar/club is predominantly white-American. If you need a place to pre-party, then I would offer this as an option. This place sells 1,2-dollar drinks because it's there special. Believe it, it's only 2-dollars to purchase an adios. On a humorous note, my cousin and I saw a bartender's butt-crack almost the whole night. Every time the individual bent down to grab a drink, the noun would present itself. haha! The comber is the nicest, trendiest, hard-to-get-into bar in San Diego. At least that's what you'd think judging from the never-ending lines outside. In reality, it's really a shitty, overcrowded jungle of 20 somethings getting their full load of booze and snapchats in before drunkenly getting Mexican food and passing out to bed, perhaps with someone they met at comber. Terrible line control when lines get big; no type of monitoring of the line whatsoever. Don't be startled when the typical south mission douche bag lets the group of 15 more than basic USD girls cut the line with him in anticipation of taking one of them home. Living in mission beach, the comber is everyone's number one place to hit up after classes or on any night of the week. Thursdays are my favorite night out at the comber, personally. Happy hour is a great place to start out my night and then either staying or returning around 12 to end my night is never a bad idea. The normal crowd is mostly University of San Diego students and/or mission beach residents so the vibes are young and reckless. They have Blue Moon on tap for us beer snobs. This bar has identity issues (it considers itself a dive). Pfff! Please. At a dive you'll find at most one bro, not the brotherhood of Zeta-Kappa-Delta. Just like The Pennant, this place is a staple to Mission Beach. I lived there for 8 years and I hit up the 'comber at least 2x a week. Thursday-Saturday nights is filled mostly with college kids and can get rather crazy. Some of my favorite memories are playing games of flip cup for hours on a Thursday night in the back on the pool table. The rest of the time it's pretty much South Mission Beach locals, so typically people 50+ will fill the bar. Great place to play some darts, drink beers with friends after a day at the beach. read more

I went the the beachcomber last weekend for the first time to see my favorite band, BumpaSonic. What a fun dive bar! Fun crowd with lots of dancing and of course the music was great! This is the typical beach dive with lots of character. The one drawback is parking, I am not sure how that is going to work over the summer. read more

Great place to preparty on a Friday night, though don't plan to spend your entire night here. 32oz. of domestic beer for only $2 8-10pm on Fridays! Or $2 cosmos for you non-beer drinkers! I wouldn't trust what's sitting inside the popcorn maker, so I always pour my own seeds & salt & make a fresh batch! Lots of USD kids, an Ed Hardy donning crowd often make an appearance, everything from nerds taking a break from studying to beefed up dudes looking to start trouble. My wife and I live in the suburbs of SD and found ourselves in Mission Beach for the night. I noticed Karaoke advertised on the marquee so we stopped in. Good crowd. I sang a couple songs, had a few beers and went back to the hotel. I would definitely go back. read more

B-E-A-C-H-C-O-M-B-E-R After I ordered a large Coors Light draft (32oz) an Apple Martini on the Rocks, and a B-52 Coffee, I held out my two twenties to the bartender while I took in my surroundings. A DJ was playing off in the corner, the crowd was a hodge podge of 20-30 and 50 somethings, all seemingly having a wonderful time. The bar was small, but I didn't seem to be having a problem getting the bartenders attention. I had been served almost immediately. The bartender returned with my drinks and said, "That will be $14.50." I almost fell off my barstool! The Coors Light was only $2.00! And the other drinks must have been on sale. They were good and we purchased another round, went to bed and then returned the next evening. :) read more

My boyfriend lives a block from here, and he is obsessed with this place. We literally come almost every thursday for the $1 you call its. Amazing deal, I don't know how they do it, but it sure draws a crowd! They don't skimp on the alcohol in the drinks like other places do when they have crazy deals. If you decide to come on thursday definitely get there before nine!! Otherwise you will be stuck in a long line outside that barely moves. Trust me on this one...get there early!! I've only been here on Thursdays, but it's not too bad at all. Really good drink specials. It's pretty much nothing but USD kids with a few random old people thrown in the mix. Only downside is that it's usually packed (especially with the drink special of $1 you call its before 11). Expect to wait in line and then fight your way to ordering a drink. Welcome to Naples, Florida on Sunday morning. Serious sunshine and shuffleboard crowd. Not that I'm complaining or anything. The vibes are cozy and the patrons are friendly. Drinks are cheap and stiff. I was sipping on Vodka Lemonades with house made Strawberry puree. The bartenders were sweet and the crowd was actually pleasant. Around 2:30 the peanuts come out and the shift starts changing over to a younger crowd. If your into that sort of thing, come later in the day. This place was cool. Just be advised to wear jeans and good shoes because there are a bunch of idiots that like to drop glasses and spill beer on you. Better to keep your legs and feet protected from the stupidity of other people. I think I saw 4 people drop their glasses that shattered on the ground. Two takeaways from Beachcomber: 1) My knowledge on random trivia is very lacking, if not non-existent. We went on Tuesday night, which i guess is trivia night. thank GOD i went with people who know more random trivia than me, because i literally knew the answer to a total of 5 questions...out of 21 (okay, so if this was school, I would definitely flunk). and they were the easy ones... 2) My favorite beer is Blue Moon. Maybe not a whole pitcher of Blue Moon, but that's my issue with self-control, not Blue Moon. Other than that, this place is chill. I went on trivia night, which might explain the overwhelming number of senior citizens occupying the tables (we were exiled to the bar...not cool). Gotta try it on a different night, or maybe it's more of a day place? not sure, but I am hesitant to judge it just yet, seeing as I went on a weird night. read more

ahhh the beachcomber. Went here one night passing through. I remember that the liquor was cheap. I also remember that the pitchers of my beer (for my beruit rounds) were pretty cheap also. Starts to get fuzzy from there. From there on out it's pretty much a drunkfest.. Once you are fully intoxicated from the plastic bottle booze, you gotta try and be aware of your surroundings. I've been to so many places with a view that have terrible food, moderate service, and watered down drinks. Not the Beachcomber. While the prices are a bit high, the food selection is fresh and delicious, service is professional and drinks are yummy. We had to park across the street in the national forest parking lot but we were presented with a parking voucher after the meal. You can't park on the same side as the restaurant but it's a nice walk to the Beachcomber if you go under the road via the walking path behind the public restrooms. read more

I usually come here as a last resort. It'll get you drunk and It's pretty awful at its best times, which I guess is what you want with a dive bar. The best neighborhood bar in South Mission Beach. Locals old and young come here on a Friday afternoon for neighbor night. You can also find people from Arizona or "Zonies" here during the summer. Despite it's isolated location, it doesn't get much better than comber. Really good mix of people - probably both old and new locals. Weekend crowds seem to be college-heavy, but it looks like during the weekdays it could be an old surfer dive. Everyone is super chill and friendly. Minimal number of prowling guys with gelled hair and half-buttoned shirts, thank god. The music may just be the best part. Nothing is off limits, no decade or genre. I've seen the greatest cover band there, too. Final pro - State kids have yet to claim it. read more

This local South Mission Beach landmark has been home to the Old Mission Beach Athletic Club (OMBAC) longer than any of its founders can remember. OMBAC is famous for the World Championship of Over The Line and its multi-National Championship U.S. Rugby Team. Old time residents, "Geezers," can generally be found at the Comber on Friday nights between 6 pm and 8 pm-before the college kids wake up. If you've ever lived at the beach, went to SDSU years ago, had a girlfriend that played OTL, dated a Rugger or just generally bowsed around Mission Beach look for your Geezer Pals Friday night. Somehow in my stint at UCSD I never managed to make it to the Beachcomber or the "Schooner" as a friend of mine called it. I went with a bunch of friends from school who said that it has changed in the last 7 years. Now this place has a good amount of roving guys looking to hook up. One guy in particular was playing the numbers game and asked every girl there if they wanted to hook up. I was amused by this and by the end of the night I believe he had found a taker, or at least a woman who was not totally off put. So, the comber has decent music, cheap alcohol, and the drinking games and clientele that make me feel like I am at a frat party at State. Not my scene, but it does what it does well. read more

I've been in SD for a while now, but I rarely get to Mission Beach for anything outside of surfing. My best friend and his buddies came to town to stay at one of the boardwalk vacation rentals and I get a text telling me to meet them at the Beach Comber. As soon as I see the place I get a nostalgic feeling of comfort because I am a personal fan of dive bars. First time coming in to the Beachcomber it was pretty dead. There were maybe 8 older guys that are no doubt OTL fans and retired Veterans that ended up purchasing our group drinks since a few of us were Veterans as well. That's a pretty damn good start to my opinion of Beachcomber. Later the next day we came in just as the Ronda Rowsey UFC fight was finishing up and we walked right in to the belly of what was now a Lesbian bar.....cool. Being the type of guy to give 0 F's this is just a normal night of SD bar hopping. My AZ buddies were caught off guard and asked me if it was a gay/lesbian bar. Nope, we just got lucky I suppose. I don't mean lucky in the sense of a sexual desire to be around a bunch of women, because any of of them would have and could have been able to beat my ass. I mean lucky in the sense of the entertainment for the night, because shortly after the fight ended I was front and center to a trio of girls performing a choreographed dance routine to N'Sync's "bye bye bye'. The entire bar was cheering as these girls demonstrated to everyone that they have way too much time on their hands. Mid performance, one of my drunken friends tried to jump in the mix and dance as well, only to be pushed on his ass and out of the limelight. He comes over to me with his head held low and told me that he was just embarrassed by a lesbian. I cracked up and gave him a pat on the back of reassurance.
