The food at Bean is made fresh with fresh ingredients. The menu is well thought out and chef prepared by the owner Charles. The service is always fast and friendly. The food is served hot when dining in or getting it to go. The inside of the restaurant has a unique ambience that includes a small grocery area with vegan specialty foods. Came here on a whim looking to share the vegetarian experience with my friend. Place was empty but clean, we were greeted and seated right away. My friend ordered a burger with fries and I had the pulled pork with tots. Super delicious and lots of flavor for both. We shared the cookies and cream milk shake, a little nutty but also yummy. I ordered a side of Vegan ranch, definitely not a fan but everything else was tasty. The Rueben was seasoned well and not too much dressing. The fishless filet was flavorful. The fries were perfectly fried and not soggy. Service was great and they asked us for our preferences, packaged perfectly to go in compostable containers!! The staff were super friendly and our order was ready in 10 minutes! Roy was so helpful in making recommendations and making sure we had what we needed. Wish we could have sat in the cute dining room but we had our dog in the car. I have loved this restaurant for years. The food is consistent for the most part. I have had the portabella bean bowl numerous times and it's always delicious. The mushroom has a wonderful flavor it's a wonderful meat alternative. I highly recommend you give it a try. When it comes to desserts I recommend you use caution. I can only recommend their carrot cake cupcakes they are tasty. I was trying to try something new and ordered the strawberry cake slice one for me and one for my children at 7 per slice I was disappointed. The slice was thin for the price but the taste was extremely sweet and dense. My two year old loves cake but this one he rolled it up in his paper plate and decided to toss it. [Coronavirus review] I sometimes have a craving for bean-based dishes, but rarely do I have the chance to answer it with a bean-based restaurant. This one was open for in-person dining, but I wanted takeout. They have their own online ordering, which worked but was a bit of a hassle (and notably refused to allow me to tip for some reason). Food was ready very quickly as it probably took me less than 15 minutes from when I ordered to arrive and find it waiting. The location was easy to get to, but terrible to get out of. On a highway with people doing 60 coming around a bend you have to pull out and hope no one's coming. I have no idea why anyone decided to build anything here. The food promised bean-based vegan cuisine with a Southern touch, and it indeed delivered all of those things. A bowl based on red beans and rice was as hearty and satisfying as I'd hoped, and the Southern-style fried tofu on top had something that I think was ranch but was good whatever it was. A braised tofu salad yielded more beans and plenty of fresh crispness. Portion size was a strength; I wasn't starving, but it'll take some work to down that single salad and entree in even two meals. I was looking for a vegan place to eat and this popped up. The place has a big sign off the highway so you can't miss it and its own parking lot. I walked in, to a southern greeting which was refreshing being from up north. I preordered so went to a cashier to pay and pick up my food. Like normal vegan places, the food takes a while to be made so I had a wait a little longer for it to be made. The price was similar to most vegan places which is not so cheap but will not break you. I paid $12. I ordered a "cheesesteak " and it came with a choice of a side. When I got to my room and tried the sandwich, I almost died. It was soooo good. It tasted like the real thing. I moved to Charlotte back in 2012 and often passed this place on 74. At the time, didn't think much of it plus was a serious meat eater. Flash forward 10 years later, I'm now meat free and craving some vegan philly cheesesteak. This place appears. Cool. Always looking to tey something new. 9/12/17 I called and ordered my food at 8:09. Teriyaki cauliflower and a bean Bowl. I've ordered before and it has never taken me almost an hour to get my food. I just now got my food at 9:02pm. I was told by the young lady with pink hair that it was going to be 15mins. I drove from quail hollow area to independence. That drive alone is loyalty to Bean. I didn't deserve the bad service, lies, along with the bad attitudes. Bean Vegan Cuisine doesn't look appetizing from the building but it's just the opposite. I'm not vegan but I know a lot about alternative options for meat, dairy, etc. I ordered the pulled jackfruit bbq sandwich with fries. The jackfruit wasn't quite cooked like I've had it before (dried & then rehydrated). That was honestly the only thing that threw me off guard. There were some pieces that weren't fully pulled which were probably the parts that threw me off guard. I'll know to ask for it cooked a little longer on my next visit (oh im going back for sure!). They also have a section in the restaurant that's like a mini market when you first walk-in. You can pick up a few groceries while you wait on your meal. I wish I had not gone last week so I could remember it for what it was in past years. I have been a customer of Bean since it opened in 2012. I have never had a bad experience there until I had lunch there with a friend. However, this was the most disappointing experience dining out I have ever had. We went around noon and were surprised to see a very empty parking lot. A woman hostess sat us next to the only other table in the restaurant. It was a tight fit. We scooted the table away from the other one so we weren't so close. We sat for at least 5-10 minutes while the hostess loudly talked to a man working in the kitchen. I had to raise my voice to ask if we could order an appetizer so she could hear me. She walked over and rudely told us, "I'd thought you'd need more time with the menu. Most people do." Instead of taking our drink order, she told us to "put the table back in case a party of 6 comes in". We had moved our table closer to an empty table for 6. All of the tables were empty except for ours and the one table of 2. We asked to move to another table to have more room. Later when arrived at our new table we were allowed to order our drinks and appetizer. As we were waiting several others came in to pick up or place take out orders. The other table asked for their check. The hostess took the check over, without telling those in the register line she would be back. Then, she started talking to the table about astrology or something like that, loudly and for a very long time. A man waiting to place a take out order at the register, which was near our table, looked at us, looked at his watch, pointed to the hostess still talking and not acknowledging him, and walked out. I don't believe she ever noticed he was there and didn't see him walking past her. A few of the people that walked in were treated well, however we assumed she knew them. She spent a lot of time talking with them one on one. The other table had to get up and take their check to the register. The diner stood there while the hostess kept talking to a woman on the other side waiting for her take out. It took an abnormally long time for the hostess to finally acknowledge and her check out. It was obvious this hostess did not want to be there, so I tried to remain polite by making sure I said please and thank you with each interaction. I was unsure of her reaction otherwise. We got our food, and I had asked for a side of bleu cheese dressing, which she didn't bring so I mentioned it again, nicely. She mumbled and walked off. When she returned she brought tea refills and I mentioned again that I had asked for the dressing. Her reaction was, "Well, I've only got 2 hands! I put it in and the kitchen has to get it and it is not there yet!!". The reaction was so uncalled for. We ate and finished our food. By this time it had become obvious why there were no other customers in the restaurant. The atmosphere was hostile to say the least. From the time we walked in we were treated as an inconvenience. In the hour we were there, a take out customer and 2 seated tables did not receive adequate service. If this happens each week, as some of the previous reviews have mentioned, it will not take long for those people to talk to their friends, and so on. This leads me to believe that Bean Management either does know or maybe they do not care anymore. Their menu has shrunk. The food kept on the menu can be bought frozen, such as Impossible and Gardein products. The food was not terrible, but anyone could make it at home. I am sad to say that after today's experience, I will never return to Bean. read more

I went with my partner, (I eat only raw) she ordered phili and fried pickles, their food looks amazing. This place is the oldest vegan restaurant in the south. Staff are super nice too. FIVE STARS IS NOT ENOUGH FOR THE MEAL WE HAD FROM BEAN. As the only vegan in my group, my entire crowd raved about our meal from Bean. Every single thing we had was fantastic. The Bean bowl with fried tofu fingers, the cheesesteak hoagie, the spicy bbq sandwich, and the bratwurst were all delectable. The sides of Mac n cheese and mashed potatoes and gravy were sooo yummy. We tried a bunch of desserts as well and those were also spectacular. Bring your omnivore friends to Bean. Bring your in-laws. Bring everyone. They will be pleased! read more

To start, the only reason this place is not a 5 star for me (as I consider the whole experience) is the location. I feel like I risk my life every time I come here, both turning into the lot (because people love to use that right turning lane to pass and speed) and also leaving the lot (because...highway!) Looking past that, it's worth it every time. Fried tofu finger plate with fries / mac and cheese. If you know, you know, but if you don't - they do tofu in an amazing way - so get the soft mushy stuff out of your head. This is chewy and crispy with a choice of sauces. I usually go Korean BBQ unless I'm indecisive in which case just go southern fried and dip in any sauce you like. Great options for dessert too! My favorite is the zinger cake or a cookies and cream milkshake. Since the place is all vegan, it's great to not have to worry about hidden ingredients (unless you have allergies of course). Now to the real star of the show. So good, I had to come back to it and allocate an entire paragraph to it. The fries. When I order the plate above I have on some occasions doubled up on the fries. These things are currently the best fries I have had in Charlotte to date. They top the charts in all 4 of my categories : 1) Perfect thickness - just above shoestring, thick enough to taste the tater. 2) Perfect temperature (always freshly made so they are each piping hot. 3)Perfect Texture - crisp outside with soft potatoey goodness inside. 4) Perfect salt. There technically is a 5th category - whether the fries also taste good cold - but let's face it, if you hit on the first four categories, there isn't an opportunity to test the 5th! Only suggestions - I'd love to see an attempt at a pizza option and also a coleslaw that is vegan mayo based instead of vinegar based. Will be back! read more

I wanted to write a review for this place because when my wife and I passed through Charlotte recently and were looking for vegan/gluten-free (GF) food this place wasn't quite what we expected. I thought it might be useful for others to have a better idea of this place when looking it up online. Vegan food is very trendy and in demand now so most restaurants that serve plant-based meals have that trendy/bougie vibe with a very specific type of dishes that many people expect (avocado quinoa bowls/etc). Bean is not like that. We stumbled upon it because another vegan restaurant we were interested was closed on that day but the proprietor was there and referred us to Bean. We went without looking up the place online and simply mapped to it with our phone. The place is very much a diner/dive sort of place and the food they serve reflects that. For vegans that would want a change of pace of the airy bougie bistro this is probably a good alternative. A lot of the menu is diner style food but using soy or other meat/dairy substitutes. This is fine but not quite what we were looking for at the time. My wife would have also preferred a better variety of GF dishes but there are still a few options. Nonetheless, we made an order there. My wife got BBQ tofu strips on grits which was served with kale and carrot bacon (essentially fried carrot chips) and a corn muffin. I got a pecan waffle with a side of hash browns and a corn muffin. Overall the food was good though it's definitely not healthy food. We were looking for healthier fare but this was still a very satisfying meal. The other reviews describing the place as comfort food is accurate. Overall service was fine. Not sure what issues other reviewers faced but the one staffer that served us was pleasant and responsive. My Go to for yummy Vegan lunch in a chill atmosphere and family friendly. I stumbled across Bean sometime ago but it took me a minute to review as I wanted to ensure consistency. This place upon approach could come off as a "Meh" place but once you try the food you will be super pleased. The Bean menu is pretty entail with explanation in detail of the various forms of plant protein mentioned in various dishes. The kids menu is cute and simple our son has had both options the cheese quesadilla and the Tofu nuggets. He enjoys both very well at the age of 2 and now 3. My husband and I FAV burger is The Cowboy burger. My husband is more stuck on that burger than I am as I like to try other offerings (he had had that burger all 6-7 visits). I also enjoy the Jalepeno cheddar burger, the Rueben and the veggie quesadilla. Bonus: You can shop Vegan after eating at the attached convenience store. The store is stocked with items I order online due to the in availability of them for the most part in stores. I was so happy to see that I can purchase the items here.
