What is nice is that plant based cheese as well as sausage is available. We ordered the Ashton pizza (large). It has mushroom, red onions, green peppers and sliced tomatoes. We were able to modify it by swapping the regular mozzarella cheese with the vegan cheese. We also added vegan sausage. The substitution and addition was just a modest surcharge (we were okay with it). Pizza came with a thin and chewy crust. It was very lightly and perfectly charred. The toppings were generous but not too densely packed. The sausage was well flavored links cut into slices. The sauce was the right amount of tangy and savory. I'm convinced the high reviews are because of the friendly staff/atmosphere and not because of the actual food. Cause the pizza and especially the cheesesteak was god awful. We got a margarita pizza and the sauce tasted very generic and there were large whole pieces of tomato sliced into the pizza like the tomato's you put on top of a burger...eating boiled tomatoes in a margarita pizza is ew! The basil was dry, burnt and shredded on top like lettuce. I would rather order a dominos even. The cheesesteak was small and dry, with cheese melted on top like a pot belly sandwich and the inside of mine was cold. How can anyone genuinely say their margarita pizza or cheese steaks are delicious is beyond me. Like do you even have tastebuds?!? This was our first time here after seeing many reviews about how great the pizza is. So, browsed the menu beforehand to decide whether there were selections of interest & appealing. Tonight was the night. We each ordered a 14" pie so we could bring home leftovers. I ordered The Peachwood (Chicken & Pesto, red pepper & onion), my husband ordered The Robin Hood (Pepperoni, Feta & Mushroom). Both were very good down to the dough. I will say the ratio of dough to topping extended nicely to the edge. I would say the flavorings of each pizza, nice combinations, and toppings did well together. Only constructive comment for The Robin Hood would be better if feta was more evenly distributed around the entire pie but still a great combo. Service was excellent, we had a very attentive waitress, place looked clean and comfortable. Take out was a big business tonight as we watched people continuously coming in for pickup via the side door. They do have a nice covered outdoor area with quite a few tables. The only unfortunate thing tonight was not knowing there was musical entertainment (every Friday & Saturday), which tonight was NOT the best and was more a distraction and too loud for the small dining room and to have any conversation. We have nothing against local talent, but for such a small venue, it needs to be lower level for a dining establishment and, in this case, better talent. Food: good quality for a brick oven pizza, toppings and cheese were evenly distributed which was nice to have toppings in every bite. The bathrooms need a changing table, but overall clean. Service was great, dispute there being a large party that needed lots of attention the server was very patience and was helpful for us. My 13th review of 2025 is to get Yelp's "wine bar" recognition badge, which led me back to Bear Brick Oven Pizza. And 13 is an unlucky #, which the 1st of 2 visits here was kind of a bad date. However, pizza & service was great here, so was worth me coming back 5.5 months later. Thursday, December 1, 2022: Five days prior to this on the Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend, I met this one chick at a games Meetup. She was flirtatious with me at the Meetup, and I had found her intriguing. I also had tickets to an event on Sunday, December 4, which I thought would be a cool date. So, I mentioned this to her, which she expressed interest, and got her phone #. We texted, and I saw an ad (maybe on FB or somewhere) about Thursday night trivia at Bear Brick, plus I had heard from someone that this place was good. I texted suggesting this for that Thursday if she wanted/could go, which she agreed to. I also knew she lived in Olney, not far from Cloverly, and I don't even live that far from Cloverly. I drove the 12 miles from home to Bear Brick on this very cold Thursday night. The pizza was very good, and we even got wine too. We split a mushroom pizza and maybe another topping or two. Server was very nice as well, and server/staff were efficient. Trivia was fun, although the place is not all that big, and can be pretty loud with the trivia questions being read. Did the 2 of us win trivia or even get top 3 places? No. Tough to place, when it's just 2 people. This is 1 of 4 examples where I did a trivia date. First was in 2016 in Arlington (I had given the place 2-stars in 2013, but I think liked better a couple of other times), 2019 in Flower Hill, MD (I had written a 4-star review, but that place is out of business now), this time in 2022, and my girlfriend in 2024 in Baltimore City (could maybe give that brewery a lukewarm 3-star review if I get around to it). Regarding our Bear Brick date, the first hour or so of the date was pretty good, nothing to write home about. What was to write home about?! Where the date turns south to the end. So, she mentioned that she had recently broke up with her boyfriend. I asked how recent, and she said Thanksgiving. I politely exclaimed, Thanksgiving...that was only 7 days ago and we just met 2 days after. She acknowledged I know in a slightly guilty way. She also added that she was still in his house but was living in the basement. They were together 3 years, and she moved to MD from LA with him as he had a job here about a year earlier. Although this was all a red flag for me, perhaps the biggest negative was that she said she misses LA, doesn't have friends here, and is going to try to apply for jobs back in LA. This was not at all promising with her. At the end in the freezing cold parking lot, I half-heartedly said you still want to do this event on Sunday. She said maybe but see I could find someone else, which I responded I understood. Incidentally, on that Sunday, I took another 1 & done date (I guess one might say I was desperate), but it was someone who I was friends with, the date was significantly late like 45 minutes to lunch, which was very annoying. Monday, May 15, 2023: It was warm, beautiful sunny day. That afternoon my work computer was dealing with an IT issue, and I couldn't do much work until it was resolved. I had already planned on a late afternoon Meetup walk around Cloverly. As a result of this computer issue, I ended up taking my own walk nearby at a golf course. The Meetup title was: "Nat'l Pizza Party Day @ Bear Brick Oven Co. (Cloverly) w/ opt. Walk". Walk was nice learning the Cloverly neighborhood more. I was enthusiastic about going to Bear Brick again. They have a nice outdoor patio area, where we sat on that nice day. The pizza was just as good as I remembered. Server was very good like last time as well. And frankly, this was a more positive memory with this group, than that dreaded December 2022 date. Another Fun Fact & Conclusion: In addition to my December 2022, I was here on a date nearly 6 years earlier in February 2017, before it was Bear Brick here but a Buffalo Wing place. We had gone on a few dates that Winter, but ultimately, she would later marry my friend and now divorce, but they were better suited for each other (at least for a while) than we were, and I dodged a bullet. In conclusion, I want to return to one day with my girlfriend to enjoy a great local pizza place. read more

What a great pizza restaurant! The food was delicious and the service was excellent. Three of our party had individual 10" pizzas and the fourth had the steak and cheese sub. We also shared a basket of Old Bay steak fries and a piece of their phenomenal carrot cake for dessert. Olga, our wait staff, was attentive and personable without being overbearing. Her recommendations on the beer and the dessert were 'spot on'. She is a definite asset to the restaurant and they are lucky to include her as part of their team. (They also serve sandwiches/deli subs and salads but not many same as appetizers) I order the 10" The Peachwood pizza and 10" crab pizza. Not disappointed, they were pretty good. The crust and dough was cooked perfectly - crisps and thin with nice flavor, lot of toppings. I can say this place has a high quality pizza at reasonable price. Great local pizza spot with plenty of indoor and outdoor (covered and not covered) seating. The inside is a big open unassuming decorless space with tables and chairs. The menus are typed in a standard word processor software on a sheet of paper and slipped into plastic sleeves. Thursdays are trivia nights from 7 to 9 pm and beer and wine specials are $5 each. The pizzas were delicious, fresh, hot, and made just as we requested. The crust was not thin or thick, just the right height. The cheese was gooey and fresh, slices were cut evenly, and we enjoyed our meals with a Yuengling on draft and a fountain beverage Pepsi (which are the best!). Came here for Friday date night with the hubs last week, place was hopping! They had live music, a dude with a guitar who was singing 80's and 90's tunes. He was actually very good, but holy crap they needed to turn the amp down a couple notches. It was just too loud, couldn't have conversation and my husband was physically uncomfortable. Service was good, and food was good too. We had the meatball appetizer, which we enjoyed. The meatballs are delicately spiced, the sauce was nice and robust. We also shared our typical favorite pizza with pepperoni, sausage, extra sauce and black olives on half. It was pretty tasty, brick oven style. The crust was light, thin in the middle, a little poofier on the edges. It didn't crisp up at all though so we pretty much had to eat it with a knife and fork. This might be because of the extra sauce, but I feel like it needed the extra sauce for the sauce to be noticeable. The meats were better than chain pizza, but the sausage wasn't the best I've had. Still pretty good. One thing that was kind of cool is when we ate the leftover pizza the next day, we both independently noticed a hint of a bleu cheese in the mix - which we didn't notice when it was straight out of the oven. I'm hoping this was intentional and not that it molded overnight, lol. But it tasted good, just surprised we didn't notice it the night before! We got successfully upsold on dessert, and tried the cheesecake. It was pretty good, definitely very sweet. All in all, we liked it, but are likely to try to come when they don't have the live music just because we don't like it too loud. Message to the Owner: Please please please hire a pizzaioli chef to help fix the recipes and the pizza. Always have a person manning the oven. That's why some of the pies come out burnt and not in a good way. The dough is completely wrong for a neopolitan pizza oven. The sauce is just blended straight out of a can. You need to add salt, Italian OVO. You should never put whole tomatoes on a margarita. The fresh mozzarella was very bad. It should be buffalo mozzarella for a margarita but at least get some better fresh mozzarella. It need to melt a little and have some flavor. The steak and cheese was so terrible. Not sure if it's even real beef. The location and the vibe overall was good. You have everything you need to make this place a success. read more

My second time here since they have opened and I'm just not terrably excited about the pizza here. I am being generous giving a 4 star review as the pizza here does fall short for me. Crust is good but it's lacking the crunch when I bite into it. Sauce is good but it's still missing something and honestly it doesn't look appealing and it doesn't fold and stand up well. Rating a restaurant has never been more challenging. As far as pizza goes in that area, BBOP gets 5 stars all the way. Compared to my personal favorites in Rockville and Gaithersburg, 3 stars. It's also a matter of pizza preference. I'd probably most closely compare BBOP to All Purpose in DC, which has been named one of DC's best restaurants, but I can't say I'm the biggest fan. My parents have been raving about this place since it opened and are regulars. I would've killed to have them around when I was growing up in silver spring. The crust was thin, just how I like it, but it was missing *something* that I can't put my finger on (probably has to do with my pizza style preference). I got the margherita pizza which is named the Stonegate (I'm a fan of the pizza names!) with beef added to it in the form of mini meatballs. It was cute but I kind of wish they were strips of fresh beef, or big ol' meatballs. The ambiance and support of other local businesses is great. The IC Dream shaved ice truck was there, and the menu had lots of local craft beers. We enjoyed the live music on the patio and got to pet some dogs. The owner was going around checking in with guests too. It's a great addition to the neighborhood and I hope they continue to succeed! read more

We found this place last minute on our way home and decided to try it out for dinner around 6 PM. They had trivia night on Thursday and lots of folks were signing up to participate. They also had a bunch of starters and other entrees. We opted for the basket of fries with old bay that came with a side of ketchup. The pizza was more than enough for two people with 8 slices for an 14" pizza. We also tried their selection of domestic/local beers. The restaurant was packed by around 7 PM with locals and they started the trivia by the time we left. The pizza was delicious with a nice crust and gooey cheese. Long overdue review... this place is my local hangout. I pick up pizza and fries every Monday for "Pizza Night". Monday is discounted pizza night too. I'll be honest, I really come here for the steak fries, which seem to have the perfect balance of moisture and flavor (not soggy, not dry). The accompanied ketchup is delightful and a favorite over the brand bottle I have in the fridge. I get the peach wood pizza a lot, but occasionally go for the Hawaiian. Once in a while we'll branch out and get the steak and cheese subs, which are also yummie. I don't usually dine in, just take out, but if the mood were to catch me, there's plenty of seating (inside and out) and the place has a comfy vibe. My eardrums were vibrating the second we walked through the doors. There was a band playing on this Friday night and the music was extremely loud for this small local restaurant. Your first impression of a new restaurant should not be to turn around and walk right out. It should be the atmosphere and the smells of good food that beckons you in. Loud music with a fast tempo encourages diners to eat faster, but also enjoy their food less, and perhaps even have less of an appetite. Soft music with a slower beat encourages diners to slow down and stay longer -- resulting in less table turn around and people will typically order more. This is a small place with an open kitchen where you can see the pretty blue brick oven right at the front cooking your pizza. Whenever you have a small place plus an open kitchen, the noise level is already elevated. To add a band, the place was immensely loud. You come to dinner to catch up and have a conversation whether that be with family after a long week of work and school or to meet up with friends. When you cannot hear the person sitting next to you, the entire meal becomes unenjoyable. Of course I did mention the noise level to our server. You have to address the situation while you're there. She said the noise level depends on the band that plays. She offered to speak to them about lowering the volume a bit. I appreciated that. I do think the volume did go down a little in the set after a short break but remain someone who prefers music be in the background and not compete with diners trying to have a conversation. As for the food, it was okay. We started with a basket of fries. Though the menu doesn't say it, but you can get it with Old Bay. So yeah, this native Marylander had to get that. It was great to try a real brick oven pizza and we enjoyed the Cloverly pizza with Pepperoni, Sausage, Beef, Mushrooms, Onions, Green Peppers. We also got the Antipasto salad which contained MIxed Greens, Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Olives, Mortadella, Salami, Pepperoni, Provolone, Olive Oil and Red Wine Vinegar. And speaking of first impressions, I thought the the rolls of meat and cheese were just deli slices. I still ended up having to cut the rolls into smaller pieces before eating. Service was fantastic. Lots of servers constantly going back and forth to their tables. Our server was the best part of the evening. Great spot for brick oven pizza in Montgomery County! Went here for dinner on a Monday evening and it was pretty empty (hooray for immediate seating). My husband and I ordered the margherita pizza and meatball appetizer. The pizza was yummy -- it came out fresh and hot out of the oven! It was a good enough size for two people. The tomato sauce was kind of bland though but they had some Parmesan cheese and red chili flakes to kick up the flavor a bit. However, the meatballs were perfect. The appetizer comes with five good sized meatballs covered in tomato sauce and shards of cheese. So delicious. Our server was also friendly and came to check on our table a few times to make sure everything was ok. How lucky are we to have a brick oven pizza place right around the corner?! We've been waiting for what felt likes ages for this place to open and that fateful day was today. I have to say that for a place that was on its first day of business, there were very few signs of immaturity in their execution. Clearly, the owners are restauranteurs. As the name indicates, this is primarily a pizza place (I included pics of the entire menu). Their pizzas are named after local neighborhoods but are the standard fare. We ordered the meat pizza (The Colesville) and the margherita pizza (The Stonegate). The margherita pizza was made with fresh basil, Roma tomatoes (which were cut a little too thickly), and fresh mozerella. The basil was lovely and overall this is a nice pizza if you're looking to avoid something really heavy. The meat pizza (pepperoni, sausage, ham, and bacon) was very nice and enjoyed by all. The sausage especially was *very* nice. As you can see from the picture, they didn't skimp on the ingredients. This place also serves local beers and has a surprisingly nice (but short) wine selection (but I'm a sucker for Chilean wine so I was happy to see it). The service was great and the greeting was warm. The outdoor seating is also lovely on a fall/spring/summer evening. We will definitely be coming back. If you're in the area and like pizza, this is your place. I had the opportunity to eat inside and relax. It is plenty of parking on the side and they also have outdoor seating. In the warmer months, they have live bands playing outside. The service was nice, and someone checked up on us basically every 5 minutes. The fries were very hot, but the pizza wasn't, unfortunately. With the first really nice day this year we decided we should venture out and have a nice meal outside. Bear Brick Oven did not disappoint. The waitress was so incredibly helpful and friendly. She also checked in on us several times, but was not intrusive at all. She was truly lovely. We ordered the crab pizza appetizer, which is a 10 inch pie. You could probably order this for yourself as a meal. There was NO shortage of crab meat on the pie. The meat was also properly cleaned and we didn't find a single piece of shell in the whole pie (something that happens a lot just by the nature of the crab). The creamy sauce and cheese complimented without overpowering the crab. It was incredible We couldn't believe that there was no picture of the crab pizza so we are rectifying that here. I had to unhinge my jaw to fit the soft bread with 8 large meatballs on it with cheese and sauce into my mouth (totally worth it). The meatballs tasted good, fresh and homemade. We both had fries with old bay which were hot and crispy just the way I like it! It was also incredibly reasonably priced. We both walked away completely stuffed and happy.
