We were very pleased with our meals. I had the Cod sandwich, my girlfriend had a croissant sandwich, mother had a double cheeseburger and my daughter had the kids pasta. All were excellent. We have almost never been so offended. The hostess belittled us as parents, chided, intervened, and treated us very poorly. Perhaps I shouldn't have spent nearly 100 there, added a lot of merchandise, and tipped nearly 20%. I should've tipped under 5% like the old duff that she helped before me--even though I was in line first. No surprise they have so few customers. The menu is so big that you can't tell what they do well (anything in particular?). The food and service were otherwise basically fine, but you can generally see why nearby restaurants are literally spilling out the doors with customers, while this one will have like 4 groups at peak. I ordered herb grilled chicken. It was so bland with no taste. My husband and daughter ordered Alfredo pasta and I could taste that the sauce came from jars and wasn't very good. In the off-season (after Labor Day) there aren't many restaurants to choose from in this resort town. My husband and I had a miserable time at Bear Trapper. The décor is cute, but that's about the only good thing I can say about this place. First we were seated right next to another couple's table, even though we were the only four people in the restaurant for our entire visit. There was a giant screen TV flashing at one end, and a radio station blasting over the sound system - commercials and all. The server's affect was completely flat, like giving our order to a robot. We asked politely if she could please turn down the radio so we could talk. Her response was, "No, we can't do that." (We should have taken that as a sign and left then.) My husband ordered a beef entrée that he thought was "okay", but he didn't like their strange fried potatoes. My rice pilaf and vegetables were bland, watery and overcooked like hospital food. I ordered the "lightly seasoned" shrimp skewers, expecting an herb blend or perhaps a dusting of Old Bay. Instead, the shrimp were completely coated in cayenne pepper. (At first I thought it was paprika.) I was burning up on the first bite and had to wipe off the pepper with my napkin. I told the server it was way too spicy to eat. She simply stared at me. I asked to get it replaced with skewers that were not peppered. Her answer was, "I can't do that." I told her she'd better bring me a LOT of napkins then, so I could wipe these shrimp off. She left and returned with the catsup my husband requested, but didn't bring the napkins until a second trip. Meanwhile the John Tesh program started on the radio, so we had to listen to him talk at full blast. We couldn't wait to get out of there! I suspect they get plenty of "first-timer" business during the tourist season because the place is a quaint novelty, but I can't imagine anyone returning based on the way we were treated. On another evening (also a week night) we went to Café Sabor down the street. That place was full of happy people and bubbly servers - we had a wonderful time! (See my review of it.) It's clearly where the locals go, and they would know the best place to eat. Definitely skip Bear Trapper - poor ambiance, terrible food, worst service. Peek into their gift shop, but don't waste your time or money eating there! read more

The restaurant seemed quaint upon first arrival but the more time spent gave a different picture. Floors and furniture were fairly dirty and the food really wasn't that great. Employees did not seem happy to be there and couldn't be bothered to smile. Our waitress was very present, though, which was appreciated. I would not return upon another trip to Bear Lake. read more

Seems like a good reliable place to eat all meals! Came into town and checked yelp for top hits. The #1 hit is out of business. Some other places have limited menus and mixed reviews. I will say, this place was clean, had VERY attentive service, and a very diverse menu. We came for breakfast and came back after seeing the dinner menu. the breakfast was top shelf, eggs, pancakes, toast...all fresh and served well. BUT DINNER...OMG, two of us ordered the ribs, prime rib and some snow crab. 100% is all I can say. You never know if a small town place can nail certain dishes...I'm from So Cal. Ribs, fell off the bone and good flavor = think Naples Rib co. prime rib was wonderful and a nice medium rare. = think Outback or better. Snow crab legs were a bit small, so hard to open and time consuming...YET worth the effort, sweet and tender, cooked near perfection. Truly someone in the kitchen knows whats up! Not too busy when we were here, so cant speak to how well they manage prime time, but we are sold. Definitely will be back and refer to friends. When on vacation...it's fun to try new things and explore...but a safe reliable large menu place for the whole family is gold. Very fair pricing too!!!! read more

If your in garden city and your sick of pizza or burgers. This place was good. Pasta was good and the steak and shrimp were also very good for a hometown type place. I would come back and my family all like their meals. The service was good and the interior was rustic but very clean. Thursday at 3:30 was a perfect time to come as it was quiet. read more

Years ago, I had dinner here with my in-laws and ordered the prime rib. It was one of the best prime rib dinners I've ever eaten. I cannot speak to the consistency as I've only been here two or three times, but I've yet to have the negative experience other reviewers have described. I can say that this restaurant is a welcome change from the other options around Garden City. There really isn't a 5-star restaurant in town. This is definitely the best option. read more

So we've had a cabin up at Bear Lake for 35 years and have loved seeing a few restaurants come into the area. The bear trapper was a favorite of ours for many years but the service a quality continues to go down. Had an omelette which was ok but smaller then they used to be and then about 3 table spoons of hash browns. Really??? Skimp on the hash browns?? Then my sister gets chocolate milk, french toast and added raspberries for $1.50. If you didn't know bear lake is very well known for its raspberries they grow like crazy and are delicious! Well in a town where raspberries can grow anywhere she get 6. .25/raspberry. Then she takes a drink of her chocolate milk which is sour and nasty, tells the waitress who takes it back and brings her water instead. Bill comes and guess what, chocolate milk is on there. So we go to pay and tell the kid who rolls his eyes sighs and says really you didn't even drink it. Hmmm. Well that's that. We came up for a couple days and thought we could eat out since we were going to be working all day but not anymore. I could make a breakfast better then that with my eyes closed. By the way we did get our money back in the form of a smaller tip then usual, and looking back $4 was probably still too much. read more

I give the restaurant a single star for their service. The food was fantastic, yet let me explain the service. I am 57 and it was the worst service I have ever experienced. We arrived at 5 pm on a Friday night. The restaurant was perhaps 1/3 full. The server was so bad. 25 minutes until we received our rolls and drinks. Five tables arrived after us and received their dinner before we ordered. We had to ask two times for rolls we watched others received that arrived 10 to 20 min after us. Our drinks were always empty. Had to flag her down to get refills. Loaded potatoes arrived without sour cream asked three times for it, her excuse oh yea, I'll bring it. She could not tell the difference between steaks. Brought an extra yet left me with the wrong one. Then told us our meal was covered and free to us only to find out they had put it on my card and said sorry she just thought it was covered, just didn't know it was my card it was charged to. Bad, bad bad terrible service. We should have immediately asked for a replacement server. read more

First time we came to this restaurant, we waited 10 minutes, no one was in the front desk, I looked over inside and found some 2 sets of people eating. So I went inside and went to the kitchen and asked them if they're opened. Anyway, we got our table and ordered stake. The server looks like she didn't like her job. I wanted a straw for my drink, and I have to find the waiter. She was not happy when I asked her to give me a straw. That was not the worst, THE WORST IS THE BUTTER HAD HAIR IN IT!!!!. So, I waited again and found the cook inside serving, and got his attention and showed him the hair. He was surprised and took the butter back to the kitchen. This grumpy lady came back and just laid the new butter in the table and left without an APOLOGY!. This is a nice looking restaurant, BUT the service is horrrible...and the lady server changed her attitude when she brought the bill out, perhaps wanted a tip!....We will never go back to this place.... read more
