My favorite cream puffs. This location is very convenient and easy to get to. Just up Balboa off the 163 with lots of parking. The staff is always nice and service is prompt. We ordered 1 matcha and 1 chocolate covered cream puffs w/vanilla filling to try something different, but these were a bit too sweet for us. We're going to stick w/the original ones. We love the cold vanilla filling.
Small little shop with great cream puffs! The parking is limited but there always seems to be at least a few spots open. Staff answered our questions and were honest about wait times when making a new batch. The cookie butter puff was super decedent and a good size! Def bigger than my palm and filled with a sweet cream. It's a nice dessert place to try if you're in the little plaza for kpop or crane games!
We were talking about these last night but realized they closed in 20 minutes so we didn't want to be those people. So Monday afternoon I took a break from work and mosey on down to Convoy to pick up some of these bad boys. The space is narrow, bright, clean and had a few tables for enjoying onsite. Location is convenient and parking is plentiful. Kehlani greeted me with a smile as soon as walked through the door. It was my first visit and I had a ton of questions and she was so kind and patient with me. A couple walked in shortly after me, so she helped them while I made my selections. I couldn't decide between the 1/2 assorted mix or 1/2 minis. I asked for recommendations as Ai was deciding between the Rose (promo collaboration with END FiELD) which was chocolate with raspberry drizzle or Cookie Butter. She thoroughly explained the flavor profiles of each and I decided on one cookie butter and one OG. Both filled with classic vanilla. Since the cookie butter was for my friend, I requested that she box them separately which she happily obliged and labeled for me. We had very low expectations once we learned this was a chain operation. We rate it a 2/5 for the puff, it was crunchier and drier than the Patêchaud doughs we're use to. We give the filling a 4/5, great vanilla custard flavor and extra point for the vanilla bean specks. It was a smidge to thick for my liking. There definitely were a lot of options to choose from. I was bummed they didn't have the Belgian chocolate filling, it was just vanilla and matcha today. Overall we had a great experience with Kehlani. I'm happy I didn't get 1/2 dozen that would have been upsetting. It's worth trying once, but I've had better cream puffs.
Nearly two decades ago a friend from Anaheim put me onto these puppies because she grew up on them up north. They used to have a location in plaza Bonita, but to be honest it was bad timing because it was before the foodie era really blew up. Beard Papas are honestly the best cream puffs I've had. Most cream puffs for me will taste similar to the frozen ones that have been thawed out. No offense if that's your jam. I bought these the matcha and chocolate eclair shells with vanilla bean cream. I gave the matcha one to my brother, so I cannot give a personal review on them, but my brother was a fan. I went to town on one of these chocolate eclair bad boys and let me tell you, heaven. Maybe I'm saying that too because I should be on a diet and the forbidden-ness of this made it taste better? They have minis also if the regulars are too big for you.. but you're a champ. Try every flavor. Do it for the 'gram. The cookies and cream cream filling was sold out when I got there. Service was sweet. One guy working the whole shebang. He let me use the potty without buying anything and then I took a bunch of photos using their decor in the back for my archives. Not a huge space, but big enough to bring a homie or a date post kbbq/hot pot.

I only learned about them because I participated in a Yelp Elite Week Experience and I really enjoyed the cream puffs; as a result, I decided to return a pay homage and get that delicious cookie butter cream puff. The cookie butter cream puff was fantastic. The cream inside was super creamy and tasty. The cookie butter flavor was up front and personal and delicious. The young lady running the shop during my visit offered friendly hospitality. Parking can be tight.
Came here for dessert as we had heard they specialize in cream puffs. Shop is in a small strip mall with various shops. My friend and I were greeted upon entering and asked if we had any questions. We picked out our selections; 2 each of matcha filled with matcha, 2 each of crème brûlée filled with vanilla custard, and 2 each of plain filled with vanilla custard. We asked if there were any drinks to go along with the cream puffs but they only had bottled water to offer. Note to owner maybe offer coffee/sodas? The crème brûlée was a standout and the matcha was a close second!! We both were stuffed and decided to take our last cream puff home for another time. We both agreed they were delicious and we would be back to try other flavors.
I've tried so many Beard Papa's locations and this place has the freshest cream puffs! I had to write a review just to acknowledge how delicate and crispy these puffs were. Service was friendly and prompt. The only thing minor improvement I'd make is to the decor. The space is a little awkward with a long blank hallway that leads to a few additional seats in the back. - Maybe some photos to make the corridor more interesting and some signage that indicates there is additional seats would be helpful. But if you don't care about aesthetics, just come for the cream puffs! 10/10!
So, I'm not much of a sweets person. Or a cream puffs kind of person either. But. I'm making this an exception. I absolutely looove Beard Papa's. I mean, I've had cream puffs before. But something about /how/ beardpapa's make theirs is just...unique. I love the different flavors they offer! My absolute fav is the strawberry. Something about the strawberry is nostalgic. Like I've had this specific taste before. I can't recall? Anyhow, it pairs SO well with the vanilla cream filling. It's not too vanilla-y, not too sweet, and for some reason, it doesn't taste too heavy! Like I could eat another 3, from how light the cream puffs were, haha. I always pair the strawberry with a plain cream puff, can never go wrong with plain. I do recommend eating it on the spot when you're in the shop though. After they pipe the filling, it tends to make the puff soggy. This is what I've noticed when I happen to finish one cream puff, and working on the second (that's how fast it gets soggy). Overall, I'm sooo glad SD has a Beard Papa's.
I saw this place a few times and had to finally try it. I never had cream puffs before but Beard Papa seemed like the perfect place to start. First off, the place had a great vibe, the customer service was great and the guy at the front was very helpful. I grabbed a few cream puffs that looked really good. I got the Oreo, Biscoff, Crème Brûlée, and they even gave me some Mini Original Cream Puffs on the house. Everything was fresh, creamy, and honestly way too easy to keep eating lol. The Crème Brûlée and Biscoff were probably my favorites, but all of them were solid. Overall, a great first experience and a good dessert spot if you're craving something sweet. I'd definitely come back and try some more flavors in the future.
Yum I love beard papa. They make the best cream puffs I've even had it in Japan. The pastry is baked daily so they are always fresh and they are not filled till you order them so they are always crispy. Both the vanilla and chocolate creams are very smooth and tasty. You can choose different pastry shells covered with different toppings and different cream fillings. I'm a purist and prefer the plain shell with either the vanilla or chocolate cream fillings. The place is small there's a few 2 top seats inside the long narrow hallway, but I suggest take out. There's a small parking lot out front and a single parking spot that's 15 minutes only. Fortunately there's no other business in that parking lot that takes a lot of parking spaces. Many Beard papa locations have popped up and always seem to close after a while. I think it's because they only have one product. I think they should open up in a shared space with a famous local coffee roaster. That way they create a symbiotic relationship. Yes they can sell their own coffee but it doesn't have the draw of a local coffee roaster. Hopefully this location can survive with people going for dessert after dinner at all the restaurants on Convoy street.
Went during their grand opening where the menu was still limited. You basically choose a flavor puff and have it filled with vanilla bean or chocolate. The chocolate filling is an additional charge, and unfortunately, the ones we ordered with chocolate fillings were not done correctly. We didn't realize it until we were already home. The filling, however, was quite generous. The creme puffs were mediocre, at best. I don't think they're worth the price point. They are located in a small strip with limited parking. I think they should have signs for better ordering flow because people were all cramming inside, standing everywhere, to where there were no sense of direction or knew who was next in "line" to order. It ended up causing confusion to everyone, as some wanted to see the display case before ordering, some just wanted to try not to block the small walkway, people skipping each other, etc. The last thing I would like to note is their food safety handling protocol. Owner or manager, if you are reading this, I hope you discuss proper glove usage with your team. I witnessed the cashier in gloves assist with entering orders, touched her cell phone, and then proceeded with the same gloves to pack the pastries. This would probably be a support it once and be done deal.

Beard Papa's is AMAZING. I'm a fat kid at heart, and this place absolutely fulfills every one of my dessert cravings. The cream puffs are fresh, perfectly filled, and dangerously easy to eat. Every time I come here, I tell myself I'll just get one... and we all know how that ends. If you have a sweet tooth, this place is a problem in the best possible way. read more
I originally went during the grand opening several months ago and had to wait around 2 hours before I could get a free pastry, but I'm super glad that it isn't that busy that I could grab my cream puff within less than 5 minutes. Location has a bathroom & parking, which is great. The staff is also really nice and there are seats & AC inside. Since it is a Japanese bakery, the cream puff is not too sweet and I just love it so much. It comes in several different flavors ranging from chocolate to matcha. I'm really excited to try their anime flavor combinations. Conveniently located next to Convoy St, you can walk to beard papa after a yummy dinner at Cross St or Curry House Coco Ichibanya. The cream puffs are so yummy! Crunchy on the outside and cream filled on the inside. The workers were so helpful and guided us on which flavors were the best. They have all the flavors on display that they have available to see. We did the original cream puff with the vanilla filling. It was powdered just right. We also did their strawberry crunch cream puff. It was delicious!! It tasted almost like a strawberry crunch ice cream! Definitely try their box of puffs to get to try multiple flavors because they do not disappoint They have limited seating but have a bigger table in the back for big parties! They also have a cute wall to take photos with or use as a background! read more
I've been a Beard Papa's fan since my first bite in NYC years ago, so I was thrilled to see them relaunch in San Diego's Convoy District (After the first SD store in LJ). The new location is tucked into a cozy plaza in Kearny Mesa, and it's got that warm, inviting feel that makes you want to stay and savor every bite. The staff here are absolutely lovely. I had such a fun time chatting with all of them; they're friendly, enthusiastic, and clearly passionate about the brand. It's the kind of service that makes the experience even sweeter. Also they mentioned about how keen they are in developing new creative fun flavors also. My fav is the chocolate shell with chocolate filling (Richness) and it's just as indulgent and satisfying as I remember. Crisp on the outside, creamy on the inside; the perfect balance of texture and flavor. They bake fresh throughout the day, so everything tastes like it just came out of the oven. Cannot wait to grab my next BP's this week itself ha ha. If you've missed Beard Papa's or never tried it before, this new SD location is a MUSTTT. They just opened this location its a bit nostalgic for me so I dropped in. They have more flavors coming so I will be back for that. I got the chocolate, oreo and regular for some friends who never had it. Look forward to the strawberry and ube once they get settled. But the quality is the same as I remembered. The batter Is light and hugs the cream. The cream isn't too sweet and comes in a carry out yellow box. I think it's a considered a custard not a cream like and eclair. My bad if I got that wrong. Beard Papa's is finally back in San Diego after their La Jolla closure! This new location's grand opening weekend was on 10/4-10/5 as mentioned in their Instagram posts! Exciting as I've been to their other locations in the past. It's located in a small plaza next to almost opening of Origami restaurant and Kawaii House claw machine on the corner of Convoy St and Balboa Ave. There's a very small parking lot that would get be difficult to snatch a spot once the Origami restaurant opens up. My boyfriend and I went on Sunday, 10/5, and surprisingly, there wasn't too long of a line, yay! We were able to redeem their free original puff with any purchase by signing up online, and it was also for a sweepstakes, I believe. They were also giving out free tote bags with a purchase of a 6pk which we thought was too much for us. We only got one each + the free. As they were only having a grand opening, they didn't have all their flavors - only limited ones of original, matcha, cookies & cream, and chocolate. I got their matcha puff, and my boyfriend got their cookies & cream puff. They were all very good! Super creamy and delicious. A nice crunch to the puff. Yum! Can't wait to see them expand on their other flavors in the future! Happy grand opening in San Diego again, and I hope the first weekend went smoothly! read more

I've been here a couple of times already. Their cream puffs overall pretty solid as the bread is good and they put a decent amount of filling. I wish they had more flavors though as their current flavors are pretty basic. I did try the cola one and that was kinda gross, maybe it's just me but I don't think cola really went well as a cream puff flavor. I like the crème brûlée but they cut off the top to add the crème brûlée aspect of it and that makes me sad because I like the bread lol. Overall I'd come back again if I'm craving some cream puffs. read more
Excited to have a beard papa in san diego. They're most known for their cream puffs which I have had in Japan. I tried all the flavors and I still like the original the best. The cream filling(theres two options chocolate and og) does get very overwhelming after a puff of two( and I tried all the 5) My ranking from best to worst is: original, chocolate, creme burlee, matcha, cookies and cream. Something about the classics along with all the cream filling works better. There are seating further in and the parking is kind if small but I was able to find space an hr after after opening. Service wise, they need to fill the puff after order so it doesn't get too soggy, and torch the creme brulee so there was a little wait. read more
Beard Papa's is a Japanese chain of cream puff stores, offering different filling options. I've tried locations in Japan and Hawaii, therefore was excited that they announced an opening in San Diego. We stopped by as I wanted my partner to try their cream puffs. Their soft opening offered different cream puff shells and 2 different flavors for custard filling. I had their strawberry chocolate covered puff with custard filling. Overall, I was disappointed because the chocolate and filling was overwhelmingly sweet, unlike more subtle flavors in the Japanese stores. I was also unimpressed with the lack of options for custard filling flavors, which was usually the focus for customization rather than the exterior shells. It wasn't for me and I don't think it represented the Beard Papa brand from Japan well. read more

Thursday night around 7 pm with plenty of parking and just a few customers ahead of us. Quick service! We tried 4 flavors: Matcha- this is our favorite. The matcha is light and compliments the custard filling. Chocolate- too sweet, again the yummy filling fixed that sweetness. Creme Brulee- I'm not sure about this one. I couldn't tell if the creme brulee was executed right. Again, the filling is good. Original- the basic of creme puff without added flavor. The puff itself is light and airy. The custard filling for all of them is great because it's not so sweet which what it should be. Thank you Beard Papa! I recommend this place! read more

- small parking lot but should be some empty spots since people come and go pretty quick! - loved the two flavors i got (matcha-tasted more like white chocolate, oreo-loved the crunchy cookie bits!) - i forgot how crunchy the outer shell of their puffs are! very yum - white chocolate that coats the outside can be a bit too sweet but i appreciate that the cream isn't too sweet to balance it all out read more
The dog/cat kibble smell that translated to taste. Warned you. Where do I begin? I did the math too late. I thought it would be a deal to buy 6 mix for $29. on the picture, this includes, 2 original, matcha, strawberry, chocolate, and an oreo crumble. when you total that, it would be $27.50. Instead on their menu screen, you would pay $29. Like you better off single buying everything than box of $29. The lady didnt even ask me what cream can i put inside. I was able to mix the choices which ended up $27.50 but charged for $29 as seen on their menu screen. what a rip off. So i went home expecting okay, its fine, its been a while since I had one. Last was SF pre pandemic. I am a fan of cream puffs and specifically liked the formulation of beard papa's. Glad to find one in SD. Guess what ruined the whole experience? The cookie crumble and the rest of the batter batch of the cream puffs strongly gave an awful smell/taste for their cookie butter. More strong with the cookie butter and rest got that smell of a Cat/Dog kibbles! It took me 10 mins to realize and point a finger of what smell I am smelling/tasting. I wanted to vomit but dont want to go through all the hassle after everything. It was a horrible experience for reminiscing a favorite taste. Definitely wont come back but wont judge Beard Papa and would try other branches if I see one in the future. Would avoid it for now. Cant believe it smelled dog/cat food. urgh. read more

Generous sized cream puffs. Since it was their grand opening, they offered limited flavors-regular, matcha, chocolate and cookies and cream. All delicious and not too sweet or dry. Since it was a grand opening it wouldn't be fair to review service since there were so many anticipating its opening. Place is clean and simple section to order and wait to be called. Yes. I have been waiting for a long time for Beard Papa to return to San Diego after their previous location closed. While parking here is going to be tricky once the new restaurant opens, and already poses to be tricky with the K-pop shop that brings in a lot of customers too. Aside from the future parking issues, beard papa is still consistent in their cream puff flavors. The choux pastry is a little crunchy on the outside, but the cream filling is super flavorful. I stopped In specifically for the monster Hunter collaboration they are currently doing and the Wild Cola flavor is something I never expected to be this good. It does taste like a cola float, but also as sweet as one too. I bought a 6pack which came to a little over $36 to include 2 original, 2 cola and 2 Oreo. The Oreo was also very sweet and we have yet to break into the originals, but I have had them in the past and are still my favorites. read more
Came during grand opening weekend at night time and there was no line, which was nice because when I drove by earlier the line was out the door. I missed having them in San Diego, my favorite is the matcha creme and I can't wait to see it back on the menu. For now they only have vanilla creme for the grand opening. Crispy on the outside, creamy on the inside, tastes best when the puff is warm and fresh! Lots of indoor seating, but the parking lot is pretty small. read more

Tried a mix of their cream puffs and everything was fresh, light, and perfectly sweet without being overwhelming. The shells had that slight crisp on the outside and were soft on the inside, and the filling was super smooth and flavorful. read more

Saw this location across the street from Flama Llama. Had to give hubs a first time visit to try some of the freshest cream puffs filled to the max! Service was super welcoming and helpful. Towards the end of the night they were awesome and friendly with the few guests that came in. Chill vibes all around. Cute seasonal decor to make a festive visit. A few chairs and tables inside along the wall to sit and enjoy your selections. Parking right in front. read more
Very cute shop in what looks like will soon be a hotspot strip mall. Service was very good, very fast. I ordered 6 plain and 2 cookie butter. Hands down the best cream puffs I have ever had. The pâte à choux was light and airy and delicious. The vanilla custard was outstanding. Get here while you can still find parking. Worth every penny. read more
Ordered on DoorDash so I didn't actually go to the location but now that I've had the product. I definitely want to make a trip and get the cream puffs there. They have a great variety of different cream puffs and you can mix and match the filling and toppings which adds a unique twist. There are a decent size and everything tasted so fresh and delicious. I got my order from hungry panda and received my box of cream puffs! They look fantastic. And their taste is amazing as well. I had cream brûlée, salt crispy strawberries and marshmallow matcha. All three were delicious, they taste quite unique, especially strawberry one, very tasty. The stuffing was very filling and shell was crispy. You should give a try if you love puffs! read more
We first discovered this place when visiting Japan. When we heard that they were opening a location in SD we had to come try it out! Upon taking the first bite into the cream puff, it brought me right back to Japan! It was so good! Crispy puff and the cream filling wasn't too sweet! I would have given this a 5 star if not for the lack of flavor choices (there were only 4 to choose from) as compared to Japan that had at least 10 filling flavors in addition to 4 crust flavors. Also, the prices in Japan were much much cheaper....($1.25/ea). Overall a great dessert place! read more
