I used to pass by this place all the time after parking in the parking garage when planning to eat somewhere on B street. Never thought to try it because it's in such a random location that doesn't have much foot traffic. Decided to try it out after eating Fire Wings and wow! I'm so impressed. I'm not a cream filling type of girl but I really enjoyed this. I liked how they made everything fresh right in front of you. Biting into the cream puff made me do a happy dance. The bread was super warm, not overly filled with cream but just right (which I appreciated), and the hard frosting on top completed the scrumptious bite. I can't believe I am finally writing a review for Beard Papa's since I have been coming here for years. So this review is long overdue! They make such fresh and yummy Japanese style cream puffs in a range of delicious flavors. The cream puffs are baked fresh daily and they don't fill them with the cream filling until you order them which makes a huge difference so that the cream puff doesn't get soggy too quickly. It's best to eat them as soon as possible. These are not super sweet or heavy like typical western style pastries. The sweetness and flavor is not overwhelming which is perfect! My favorite cream filling flavors are the fruit flavors like mango and strawberry but you can't go wrong with the original cream custard either. Our family loves Beard Papa! However, I got a bunch of minis for a birthday party and they were terrible - almost no filling in them (filling was just the size of a pea) and the outer shell was hard. Huge disappointment!!! Did not taste good at all. And for the amount of money I paid for these - so not worth it! I don't know if the lady that filled these puffs is a new employee that doesn't know what she's doing (I've never seen her at this location before) and maybe she needs more training on how to fill the puffs. Beard papa you never fail me, except when you close early and I can't get to you on time. This location serves a lot more variety of things than other beard papa locations. They have different flavor eclairs, cheesecake, paris brest (no I did not misspell this), and of course their famous creme puffs. I tried the strawberry eclair with strawberry filling and it was so good. It pains me to write this review because Beard Papa has been my favorite go to treat place for years. Upon finding it in Hawaii years ago, I was tickled pink when they began popping up in the Bay Area. A bit pricey but worth it for that heavy custard and pop of whatever flavor was featured that week. I'm not always in the San Mateo area but when I am, I made it a point to stop by and check in on the flavors. Due the price and the amount of calories, I would only pick some up for the fam if the featured flavor was mango, strawberry or green tea. Yesterday it was mango and we hadn't had it for awhile so I plopped down 13.50 for 4. Wow. What a major disappointment. The filling was not custard at all but whipped cream with barely and mango in it. My guess is that newbies won't know what they are supposed to taste like and maybe they will buy them but really, it's not a Beard Papa anymore. So sad. I love this place, and it is also in a very convenient location. They make the best cream puffs, you cannot go wrong with the original vanilla one. This specific place has very friendly service which is a plus when ordering. I say that because I usually like to treat myself to a cream puff when I'm not feeling my greatest mentally, and sometimes a little friendliness while ordering your comfort treat goes a long way. Ughhh it really pains me to write this review because I love their cream puffs! But my customer service experience was so bad that I wouldn't come to this location again. A while back, I bought a box of cream puffs and when I got home, I realized I paid for 12 but they only gave me 10. These are NOT cheap, so I called their phone number to try and get a refund since I don't live nearby and wouldn't be able to come back to get the two I paid for. Well unfortunately, their phone line was dead so I basically got scammed out of two. I was really disappointed about this, but I figured the next time I came in I could bring this up and they would make the situation right. Nope! I came in yesterday around 6:30 PM and asked the cashier if their phone line works because last time I came, my order was wrong and I couldn't contact anyone. She said, "We were probably closed." Like what? So rude to even assume that when she didn't even ask what time I called (2 PM and 5 PM on a weekend). So I replied, "Okay... well can I get a refund, or two cream puffs today to make up for the two I never got?" and she said "No, we can't do anything." Like what... again! I was so upset and wanted to go off at this point, but I just said, "So you're telling me if I were to buy 6 but you only give me 4, you can't do anything about that?" and again she repeated the same, "We can't do anything" and looked at me like I was dumb?? I was so mad when I walked out because it's so ridiculous that they can't even spare two cream puffs that I actually paid for. Ordered a six pack of eclairs in variety of matcha, chocolate, strawberry, s'mores, and cookies&cream shells. The s'mores one is pretty cool, as the marshmallow topping is torched right before your eyes! You can pick the cream filling for inside: vanilla, chocolate, or mango. The coated shell was a bit too sweet and thick, but overall it hit the spot for me as I've been craving these ever since pacific puffs (now who remembers that place?!?) suddenly went out of business. Now I'm giving 5 stars because the service was actually really good! I came in with a stroller and the worker was sweet enough to open the door for me. I like the location of this branch. It's next to a theater that's next to a garage. Convenience in parking is one of my main reasons sometimes to visit a place. What Beard Papa sells is a no brainer. I like this location as it's easy to find and there is a free garage next to it. I have been here a couple of times and service is ok. I do wish they had more flavors to offer every day then weekly flavors. Every time I come it's only original vanilla, chocolate and mocha. My fave flavors is original and strawberries but they barely have strawberries served. Why not have at least five flavors continuously. The amount of custard inside is generous. There is only four sets of tables to eat. They do offer a very small amount of other pastries but not as popular as their cream puffs. I saw someone walk down 2nd Ave w/ a Beard Papa's bag and I checked trusty Yelp...low and behold there was a Beard Papa's next to the movie theater, a block down from Sweet Breams! We were pleasantly greeted by the Area Developer who took our order! :) My Chocolate Eclair was heavenly! The shell was fresh and I even saw them dip my shell in chocolate to make it an eclair! I really like Beard Papa... but not this location. It is dirty. The chairs have a layer of dirt. Floors were gross. And why the heck do they have boxes everywhere? I almost walked out before ordering because Im not used to being in a Beard Papa that wasn't clean. The staff were nice but looked so bored out of their minds. If so bored, then clean the place or arrange all the boxes in away that's not off-putting to customers. We've ordered from here dozens of times - both through DoorDash and walk-in. The place is cute but tiny and the cream puffs are quite tasty, hence, is continuing to return. Love them all particularly the crème brûlée, eclairs, and the minis. What this place lacks and the reason for 3/5 stars is the quality control of DoorDash orders. Honestly, I don't even know whose responsibility it is to make sure the ENTIRE order is complete and ready for pick up - the establishment or the dasher. On several occasions, we have been missing multiple items in our order - one being FIVE eclairs. FIVE. That was half of our order. How does that happen? Please, triple check the outgoing orders so that we can stop filing complaints to get refunds. We'd rather have the crème puffs. read more

There's really nothing to complain about this place! Customer service: Staff are really nice, friendly, and quick to assist you. Sanitary measures: They provide sanitizer at the door, staff wears gloves at all times, and then puts on an extra set of gloves over their gloves when they're packing the cream puffs! Price: We got 3 Vanilla and 3 green tea cream puffs for $17.95 after tax which in my opinion is a fairly reasonable price. There are a variety of pastries you can choose from as well--plain, chocolate-dipped, and coated with cookie crumbs, for instance. While not a bad dessert, they're on the rather expensive side at over $3 a pop, and the quality of this location seems to have deteriorated a bit over time. Why are you so addicting Beard Papa's?!?!?!? I would love to review the e'clair or any of the other flavors EXCEPT vanilla, but this particular location is terrible at keeping things in stock. I've been here multiple times and I would consider myself lucky if they have Vanilla AND Chocolate. I even stopped trying to order the mini-puffs, because THEY NEVER HAVE THEM !!! Ever since my friend brought these puffs to a party, I've been wanting to go and get them. Finally got a chance to get some this weekend. I ordered 4 original puffs with 4 different types of filling: vanilla, matcha, hazelnut and chocolate. Vanilla was yummy!!! I think vanilla was the best and matcha was good. I didn't like the chocolate and hazelnut that much, so next time I'll stick with vanilla and matcha. They currently have a table at the door to order, which is great during COVID times. Our cream puffs were prepared to order and they were ready to go right after we finished paying. Nice and quick! We tried: - Strawberry eclair with vanilla filling: The strawberry shell on top of the strawberry eclair was way too thick. It had a great strawberry flavor but took away from the light airy-ness of the cream puff since it hardened thick and covered so much of the shell. Would not recommend if you love the lightness of a cream puff. The vanilla filling was incredible though. Perfect flavor and texture! - Cookie crunch puff with matcha filling: The cookie crunch puff had a slight crunch but it didn't really add much. I barely even noticed the cookie bits. I would go for a regular shell next time. The matcha filling also had a light matcha flavor and tasted a little less sweet than the vanilla. Although I love matcha, nothing can beat their vanilla filling. Plus, I feel like I didn't get enough filling. The edges of my cream puff seemed a little empty.
