We dropped by after dinner and needed some dessert. And decided to try out your fav papa puffs. We decided to order 6 although maybe it was an overkill but it was cheaper than ordering individually. We got the big ones because the small ones you can only customize the filling but not the toppings. I tasted only the green tea, chocolate and the honey butter. Out of those 3 I liked the honey butter (with vanilla filling) most. Then maybe it was the chocolate one (we put chocolate filling). But that might be because I took it home and ate it a few days later on a HOT afternoon. :). Then the green tea one (green tea filling) would be ranked after that. But maybe if I took this home and ate it on a hot day it might push this up the ranks as well. Haha. Anyhow, would definitely come back to try some of the other flavors. :) read more

Having been to Beard Papa's in many different locations the one thing I will say is that their product is consistent. The customer service is average, and the cream puffs are always solid. Nothing that will blow you away, but will satisfy your sweet taste. I personally love the classic plain puff with custard cream. I have tried their chocolate covered puffs and those are really good as well! read more

Of all the Beard Papa locations, this one seems to be the most low-key no bells and whistles spot. They hand handwritten signs on their windows with grammatical errors ("Todays Flavor's") that make me cringe a little bit whenever I see them, but it does give it a little homey feel to it (a bit like a mom-and-pop vibe). Since COVID, it seems they place a table up at the doorway so that all interactions and transactions are made at the storefront. More than once their card reader is down, and I find myself having to dig for whatever meager cash I have in my wallet. They recommend you go across the street to the movie theater to get cash, but I like to think it's just the universe telling me "No Jenny, you do NOT need a dozen cream puffs today". They are a bit pricey, but personally they're worth shelling cash over every once in a while. For reference, my $9 in cash bought me 3 original cream puffs with change to spare as tip. Like all other Beard Papas, they have the standard vanilla and chocolate flavors daily, and offer 1-2 other flavors of the week. The matcha is always a family favorite! The puffs are consistently good, so I overlook some of the little inconveniences. It's always a stop whenever I'm in the downtown area. read more

I've gotten Beard Papa's a bunch of times at different locations and I've always loved it! I usually get the original puff with vanilla filling. This time I also tried the cookies & cream puff. It was a little too sweet for my liking (and I can usually handle super sweet things). In the future I'd probably stick with my usual original puff with vanilla filling. I went to Beard Papa's first in Japan and Taiwan, and was thoroughly impressed so I decided to try it out in the states. I was slightly disappointed, but of course food might get worse the further you are from the origin. It was still solid, with different flavor fillings. Came here for cream puffs because it's my mom's favorite! Found metered street parking down the road. The location is right off of the main downtown San Mateo street. Because of COVID protocol, right now it's just a walk-up window where you order at the door and the guy brings you the treats. The location itself didn't look that big, a simple small shop. You can order a single puff or a set. We ordered a box of 6 vanilla cream puffs and my sister got an eclair. The cream puffs are the best. The pastry is light and airy and the filling is so decadent. You can easily eat like 2-3 but I limited myself to one haha. My sister couldn't tell the difference between the eclair or the cream puff but still enjoyed it. read more

By the time we went to order which was around noon on a Saturday, they were out of half the flavors. We got an assortment of cream puffs and the green tea eclair. The cream puffs were all very sweet and some of them were hard to differentiate the flavor since they were really sweet. The green tea eclair tasted alright. Though it was not as sweet as the cream puffs, it did not have a strong green tea taste to it. The individuals working at the store at the time were very nice though and as accommodating as they could be.The time we went was not super packed. Really lovely cream puffs! I love that they're not too sweet, and relatively cheap compared to bobas. They're also quite close the Caltrain so it's easy to grab a quick snack before or after getting on. Sometimes they are missing limited edition flavors on posters, but I still really enjoyed the alternative flavors I tried. read more

Beard Papa is a family favorite for us. We have been religiously consuming these cream puffs for over a decade both here in the Bay Area and internationally. Even though the prices have definitely skyrocketed and the size of the cream puff has shrunk significantly, at least the taste and quality have stayed consistent. I purchased a set of 6 cream puffs this weekend (4 original and 2 with chocolate filling) for about $19. The sizes are about half of what they used to be because I remember not being able to consume one whole cream puff and it was always such a filling treat. Now, I can easily eat 2 of them and still want more. The service was nice at this location and the wait was a little shorter than ten minutes to receive my order with two parties ahead of me. As long as the taste stays consistent and fresh, I will still come back for more. read more

It was pretty empty when I came in, probably because a competitor opened up nearby, but I was pleasantly surprised by the taste! Only 2 men working here 1 ) 1 guy was in the back eating his lunch or eating his cream puffs (by the stoves) 2) while the other guy was in the front taking orders We left, went to get our jackets, came back 15 minutes later & our order was still not ready 3) so now the guy that was taking orders, was the one filling the cream puffs with the filling. Never met a cream puff from this establishment that I didn't like. The cookie puff is my favorite. I love the crispy crust bits on top and the sweetness that comes along with it. Their fillings never disappoint! Vanilla alone makes my heart flutter and taste buds dance! Back in the days, Beard Papa used to be the go to place for choux cream (in Asia), be it vanilla or chocolate. Beyond his innocent gentle grin, dear Mr. Papa's truly the symbol of evil. He hooks you with the sweet aroma of the baked choux and the bitter scent of caramelized sugar. There's never a line at this particular location. Mini cream puffs: a small order comes with six cream puffs with fillings of your choice. On this particular occasion, we went with vanilla and matcha. The bite-size puffs were generously filled and dusted with powdered sugar. The matcha custard, unfortunately, was a bit lacking in the main ingredient - matcha. Regular vanilla cream puff: crunchy shell with heavenly vanilla custard cream. As with the minis, the filling was a bit runnier than we're used to but tasted great nonetheless. My dream is to one day, fill a pool full of the sweet vanilla custard and eat to my heart's content (perhaps die in it). This place definitely hit the spot! Went here the other day with my cousin and we were really happy with both the cream puffs and the service! I ordered the 6 mini puff option and a regular smores puff. For the 6 mini puff option we were able to mix the filling flavors ,so we got 2 chocolate, 2 matcha, and 2 vanilla. I enjoyed all the flavors! The smores puff tasted great too! Staff was very friendly, and they were quick to complete our order. We came in around 3pm and there was no line. And since we came on a Sunday all of the street parking was free. Great place if you're looking for something fast and sweet! It's on the cheaper end too compared to other bakeries I have been to. Then I tasted the cream. It was like runny pudding. It wasn't thick. It wasn't anything. I didn't really taste the vanilla - just taste meh. The texture was super off putting also since it was super runny. I have no idea if usually it is like this or this was an off night. My wife ordered a chocolate filled cream puff and the texture and consistently of the chocolate filling was COMPLETELY different. Hers actually had texture to it and was not just a wet, drippy mess. It's been a while since I've had this place but me and my bro used to get these every time we hit the Westfield mall in downtown sf. This location is conveniently in downtown San Mateo. I noticed they've expanded their menu and carry a lot more treats now than before. I still went with the classic vanilla cream puff and was not let down. My gf also high regards the flakey pastry. Im very pleased to see this business survived the pandemic unlike many of my favorites along the way. Social distancing is enforced as well as all employees wearing masks/gloves for the safety and consideration of all. Speedy service and even with a long line I got my fixing in a matter of minutes.
