My buddy, who doesn't eat breakfast, heard about their shrimp and grits so he had us go there for breakfast one morning. It didn't disappoint. He said it was the second best in his life, and was clear that this was a pretty distinct honor. Early Sunday morning, there was no wait. And our food was out pretty fast. Hot and good. The place had that southern charm, and it the kind of place that you definitely want to come back to. FYI: their poaching is done in a microwave

Shrimp and Grits

Ham and Cheese Omelet was delish. Shrimp and Grits was so good that I couldn't get a picture before he finished it. Not spicy and plenty of flavor, just like he likes it. Service was great, ambience was casual.

Great breakfast omelette and lots of ingredients. I had the Denver omelette and it was great! This is an old time diner with great friendly service and casual interior. Nothing fancy here just great food at a great price. There are two worlds in Beaufort- the close-to-water high-rent district where you pay for proximity to "Salt-Life", and the world of day-to-day where you don't need to be a millionaire to eat. No servers here with sixteen kinds of facial jewelry here, this is more like Mama's house, and Mama does it right! Go hungry. You'll get fed! (Ok, now I'm hungry again, I want another Denver omelette )

The waitress was super nice, food was out super fast and for the price there was a lot of food. Great for breakfast, was eating so fast I forgot to take a picture of the Red Eye Platter. Updated menu included for 2022 in photos ! Food was good. Would recommend, it's a good little spot and will be back!

Meat lovers omelette with ham bacon sausage and cheese

Good food at a reasonable price! I was born and raised on the west coast so I am not a shrimp and grits aficionado but I have to say the shrimp and grits were Awesome shrimp were cooked perfectly! (I hate over cooked shrimp ) my hubby had the meat lovers omelette and said it really hit the spot!!!

Something to crow about!

Recovering from a previous hurricane, the Beaufort Café is back in business and it's something to crow about! This busy, no frills diner serves up some of the best breakfast in town! Just ask the locals! The décor is plain and could use some more wall art.... sticking with the rooster and chicken theme! The tables are uncomfortably close together, we felt "cooped" up! The server's butts are literally in your face if they are waiting at your neighbor's table, and the exiting customers are squeezing by with "I'm sorry" and "Excuse me"... take out just a couple tables and make a bit more room in the aisles and your patrons' will have a more pleasant experience. If a few people have to wait for a table, it'll be worth it, "hen"ce, the "peck"ing order. There's also a couple of cute bistro tables outside. Aside from space issue which mildly "ruffled my feathers", folks come here for the good country cooking. We chose the farmers 2+2+2 breakfast. The eggs, bacon and pancakes were clucking delicious! And the southern grits were creamy, smooth and tasty. My hubby thought the coffee was weak; he normally gets a second cup but passed. The service was attentive, the prices were fair but the parking is limited. Focus on the food and you'll be a happy camper if you roost at this local joint!

Stopped by 4/8/19 and the cafe is CLOSED. Windows covered in paper. Next nearest sit-down cafe is Grumpy's in Morehead City.

A consistent breakfast diner. Might have the best shrimp and grits in town. At times it can be too crowded especially on weekends.

Very good breakfast, it looks like it was about 50/50 tourists and locals. Not many places to eat breakfast in Beaufort so I will return!

I like the hash browns are shredded and that they give you an option of onions or no onions.

They were so pleasant and welcoming. We entered the restaurant and took a seat at the end of the bar. The bartenders were dressed to impress. They didn't have uniforms, but instead nice pants, a pressed collared shirt and a fitted vest. The way that they presented themselves before even speaking said to me that we are going to take care of you and you are going to enjoy a wonderful evening. We love to start with bar bites or small plates to sample the menu. This allowed us to try the crabcake, calamari and the scallops & bacon. Everything was cooked perfectly and full of flavor. We shared a bottle of red wine and split the asparagus and steak cooked medium-rare. The steak was cooked to perfection! There is a standard fee of $3.00 to split a meal. I love, love that the bartender waived the fee and allowed us to share a meal. Because we start each meal with small plates a dinner each just isn't possible. This evening out was worth each dollar spent. We will definitely come back each time that we visit the coast.

Shrimp and scallop penne was swimming in some brown gravy. Shrimp was overdone, pasta was mushy and the scallops were microscopic. Very disappointing. Shrimp and grits were also swimming in gravy to the point that the grits just disappeared into it. Had high hopes for a great dinner and it didn't live up to expectations.

Unfortunately, they only do brunch on the weekends now, according to our server. We dove into the lunch/dinner menu featuring "Handhelds" from $14-$17, "Smash Burgers" (singles were $9, up to a double for $3 or a triple for $5 more) and $24-$30 entrees like Filet Tips and Shrimp or Chicken jerk-style pasta, . I opted for the "Signature Smash Shroom & Swiss Burger" - I ordered the double for the $3 upcharge and got a few tiny sautéed mushrooms and onions and a dollop of 1000 Island dressing on top of two lifeless, unseasoned burger patties. The burgers were simply stacked on the grilled sourdough, completely unsmashed, with no classic char or compression. The house fried chips were decent, but there was a large glob of unfried chips in the middle. Our $16 mahi tacos arrived on ice-cold flour tortillas with about 4 ounces of blacked mahi strips, red cabbage, and lime aioli. The onion rings were nicely fried, but nothing special.
