First things first...Mrs. Chai, THANK YOU for opening up and having such a safe setup during this crazy pandemic. I literally would have shaved my head in this 108 degree weather and with a 9 hr power outage had she not cut my hair yesterday. This is a long overdue review as I have been coming to beauty bank for 5 years. Mrs. Chai has always done a great job in cutting my hair and knowing exactly what I want. After so many months of SIP I asked her to take 6 inches off and thin out super thick wavy hair and boy did she do that. I left thinking maybe I asked for too much off but she must have been a mind reader because I thought she did just perfect today. I didn't get to take a picture of her set up but she's got a tent set up in the quiet parking lot in the back of her salon and moved a hair cutting chair, mirrors tools all outside. She wears both a mask and a face shield. She also gives you a disposable eyeshield and takes your temp with a touch less forehead scanner. For those who are in desperate need of haircuts, do yourself a favor and call her for an appointment. It will beat diy haircuts that lead to just shaving it all off. read more

Like what the others say she will definitely multitask and leave you wondering if your perm will get overdone. But really, she is so sharp and experienced that you should know you're being taken care of (even if it may not feel like it). The digital perm is a multistep process. If you're looking for curls, this is it. No more 80s perms, girls. The digital perm will leave you with beautiful natural curls. Definitely use product. Overall, it is easy to care for. She will cut your hair shorter than you want. I said 2 inches, she cut 3.5 inches. Eek! The process takes over 3 hours with lot's of smelly chemicals. The rollers look a little burnt, like hair dye was burnt into them. My hair is long so it cost $250. You can go to places in San Francisco and get it done at Chinese salons for $100 less. If you have the time and gas, get it done there. Otherwise, I am happy with my perm. I'd do it again. Lasts a year, she says. read more

So the digital perm offered here isn't a traditional digital perm were you hooked up to a crazy machine. Mrs Chai douses you hair with chemicals, rolls it with warm curlers and then your hair is processed like a cold perm. But the results are amazing. My hair doesn't smell and it looks just like the picture I showed her. I was really worried because one of the chemicals smelled horrible. But the end result is perfect and stink free. My hair isn't dry or brittle. It's shiny and soft with big curls at the ends. read more

I've been going to Beauty Bank (or Chai In Sook Miyongshil, as I always knew it) since middle school. My mom's been going for even longer than that. Mrs. Chai knows exactly what I like. I'm not very trendy, and I pretty much just trust her to cut my hair in a flattering manner. She just asks "cut or trim" and "bangs or no bangs?" It's a simple haircut, but it's always cut in a way where my hair frames my face neatly. She also cuts it so that it looks just right about a week after the haircut, so the cut lasts longers. I've gone to other salons both here in San Jose, and in SoCal, and I always end up going back to Mrs. Chai because I'm not satisfied with the quality of the cut at the other places. I've also gotten a couple perms, a straightening, and a coating done here, and all of them were more than satisfactory. Highly recommended! read more

Received a digital perm here. So many people have commented on my perm that I must say, THANK YOU Mrs. Chai! I got an appointment quickly for my first ever perm that took ~2-3 hours. The whole process involves a couple of washes, smelly chemicals, a hair cut, and a bit of sitting with a little machine whirling overhead. I asked for "loose curls" and was disappointed at first to see it SO curly. However, I knew this was part of the process as it was going to loosen over time. Mrs. Chai also nicely explained how I could mess with my hair to style it more into a wavy versus curly cut. It took about 4 weeks for the curls to loosen enough for me to fully appreciate them, but they've been great since. The curls refresh after a shower. A quick tip: do not blow dry and rather spray your wet hair with Aussie hairspray to get them to stay in place. So far it's lasted almost four months. Yes, digital perms are extremely expensive, but I treated myself. If it lasts even longer, I might consider trying it again. Nonetheless, I believe I'll be going back to Beauty Bank in the future. read more

I went back to Ms. Chai for a digital perm 9 months ago, and my hair is curly, more relaxed. I went back for a trim two months ago, and the curls are still there. I will be headed back in the next few months for a refresh. After getting my digital perm, my coworker went (she's Caucasian) and had her first perm ever--and loves her digital perm as well. I asked Ms. Chai why she doesn't use the digital perm machine I've used in the past at other salons (the ones with all of the wires), she said the curler set she uses is updated, which measures each curler temperature right on the curler, so the wires are not needed to monitor the individual temperatures of the curlers. She informed me that the digital perm machine with all of the wires is from the 1980's. So rest assured, you are getting the digital perm at Beauty Bank, even though the wire contraption you may have seen at other salons may be not found here. read more

She remembers who I am and asks about my mom when I go. Like some of the other reviews said, this woman is straight up with you. She knows what'll work and what won't. I asked her to do my hair a certain way once and she gave me this long lecture about how my face is round and cutting my hair that way will only make it look rounder. And you know what? It didn't upset me. She said it because she takes a lot of pride in her job of beautifying people and if people don't look better walking out than they did walking in, she's not happy about that. Now, I was a little worried about the fact that most of the reviews were about perms... and I wasn't going to get a perm. Just a simple haircut. But I went anyway with a picture at hand, and my goodness. This lady works magic, I swear. She turned my outgrown and way-too-much-hair into something that looks fabulous. What I liked most was that she actually incorporated the main elements of my desired hair, into something that flattered my face shape as well. Impressive. Was recommended to see Mrs. Chai by a friend who has been going to her for years. I was pretty satisfied with the results. The pros -This lady knows how to cut bangs! She spent ample time my bangs because I seriously have a weird part in the middle of my head. Her hard work resulted in GREAT results. Plus, a wash and cut was only $35 before tip. A super deal in this area. I think the language barrier made for little to no conversation during the cut, but I didn't mind because that just means she can concentrate more on my hair. She cut it a tad shorter than I wanted, but no big deal, it wasn't a huge deviation from my instructions, and hair always grows back. She did line cuts for my layers, which is the first time I experienced this kind of layering. It was definitely a lot faster than any cut I've ever experienced. However, the end result did look indisputably good, even if different from what I'm used to. As the other reviews note, she is multi-tasking the whole time she's with you b/c I think it's just her and her hubby who run the salon. There is something to be said about supporting hardworking local businesses. I would recommend this salon if you want a hairstylist who doesn't charge an arm and a leg and knows how to work with asian hair. read more

I went there for a haircut and came out with a digital perm. Should have done it YEARS ago. My hair was so heavy and unwieldy but I wanted it up for my wedding. She suggested a digital perm and I was all nervous because I didn't want like, 80s curls. But she did it perfectly. I'm going back to get my hair trimmed cuz the curls are still there. They get tighter after a shower, but relax if I don't wash my hair too often. Game changer. read more

i have never gotten my hair cut by the same place/person more than twice. i go to a place once and if i like it i go back. every time it's been a fluke because when i go back a few months later, the results are disappointing. and i don't change my hairstyle very much - layers w/ side bangs. so when i went back to beauty bank to mrs. chai i was very happy that i liked my cut even better than the first time. not only that but she was answering the phone and making appointments, had another lady in the middle of a perm, and was arguing w/ a guy who was overcharging her for some remodeling she got done for the shop ... all while she's in the middle of cutting my hair. i've been going back ever since for over a year now. after the first two cuts mrs. chai recognized my voice and my name. just wish she accepted credit cards. read more

I know this place has a REALLY cheesy name... but I think this is by far the best hair place in the bay area. The lady who cuts hair here has been in business for 30 years... and every time you're there getting something done there are like at least 4 people waiting for her. She does a lot of techniques that are hard to find like the "nano perm" or a "digital perm". They have that "Magic Straight" techinique too. Definitely a place I would recommend. It's not very fancy here at all, and I wouldn't expect anything too edgy like... getting blue streaks in your hair, but if you want something done exactly how you explain it. I've been coming here for years and I cannot even remember how many years it's been so long. Mrs. Chai is awesome and knows my hair so well that I don't even need to tell her what to do. The first time I ever came, I think I brought a picture and after that, she knows the look I'm going for. I get my haircut and regularly get my digital perms here. For digital perms, she's awesome. My digital perm lasts between 8-10 months. I even have referred my friends and family here and now they come to get their haircuts, color and digital perms here too! Mrs. Chai is pretty fast too and easy to make appts! Highly recommend. I love how Beauty Bank is local to me and I don't have to go into the city to get a top-notch stylist. As a matter of fact, people come down here from the city to get their hair done! If you are coming here the first time, my advice is to bring a photo of the look you are going after.
