It was bright red like usual, topped with a thick layer of cream cheese frosting sprinkled with chocolate shavings. It wasn't dry, but not extremely moist. My friend had both cupcakes and loved them. He said the maple bacon cupcake "tasted like breakfast!" The rest of the bakery sold frosted cookies, jumbo cookies, cakes, and 3 sizes of cupcakes (jumbo, regular, & mini). A woman from the neighboring office dropped off a white box today, with the explanation "I'm not allowed to bring them into the office anymore, so I'm offering these to you." In the mysterious box were several mini cupcakes in Lemon, Banana (which I thought were chocolate chip... an unpleasant surprise for taste buds), and Red Velvet. Knowing that Im the office sweet tooth, I got to sample them first. I thought I was turned off to gourmet cupcakes forever after the sugary sweetness of Sprinkles and Crumbs, but these little cupcakes were great. Especially the lemon ones. The frosting looks thick, but it's light and fluffy... perfectly delicious. EDIT 9/28/08 I visited this place for the first time after developing a craving for the lemon cupcake. I was lucky enough to snag a 24 minute parking space and didnt have to drive up and down Manhattan. I bought 2 medium lemon cupcakes and a chocolate cupcake with white frosting. I should note that the chocolate cupcake tasted like duncan hines chocolate cake. Not that that's a bad thing. The real reason I'll come back to this place is because the frosting isnt overwhelming. There isnt 6 inches of frosting you have to spelunk through to get to the cake portion of the cupcake. To me, the frosting to cake ratio is perfect. The only reason I docked it one star is the lack of variety. They only have red velvet, carrot, lemon, white, and chocolate. Also, their sandwiches are pretty sizable, as they should be at $7. becker's is the best!!!! their cookies have completed my childhood, i love them so much!!! my family always gets cookies, donuts, cupcakes, and cakes from this local bakery!! today i got the turkey sandwich on squaw bread, and it was delicious!!! i do not usually get sandwiches from their deli, but i will definitely start to!!! they were very generous with the turkey, and you can tell that it is very quality meat. the squaw bread is made fresh in house and it is so soft and delicious, and everything goes together perfectly in the sandwich!! it also comes with really good potato chips, a yummy sugar cookie, and a pickle!! what a great deal. i also got 4 surfboard cookies - the signature staple cookie at beckers. they are cookies shaped like surfboard with the best sugary icing!! SO AMAZING!!! these cookies have always been my favorite along with the sugar cookies with the imprinted picture frosting, those are the best!!! they always have such fun and cute pictures on the cookies, and always so many to choose from!! i am not sure if they still sell these, but beckers donuts are very underrated!!! my family used to get a dozen every wednesday (when they used to have a special deal on Wednesday, not sure if they still do this because of covid). the donuts are some of the best i have ever had, and always fresh!! my family also gets cakes from beckers monthly, just because. there is never a reason to need cake. but they are so good and moist, and the frosting is perfect - not too sweet but just sweet enough. Stopped in here on a whim to grab and coffee and walk The Strand to Hermosa. I saw the cookies and had to try. I can honestly say it was probably THE best cookie I've ever had in my life. Serious! On Tuesday I found out that the cake and cookies I ordered for Saturday could not be made due to injury. After a bit of research I happened on Becker's. Tried calling to no avail so drove the dreaded PCH and asked if they could do a quick order. YES! NO PROBLEM! Cake and cookies for 25-30 people in 4 days, just over $200 and perfect. Really delicious. The staff was super helpful and easy going. We came one week before pick up with a flash drive in hand and ordered 24 personalized cookies. Why not 5 stars, well, because sometimes I'm a cheapskate and $50 or so bucks is a lot of dang money for 24 cookies. But omg , they are so worth it! I've been coming to this place since I was a toddler (and I now have my own). It has been a staple in our family celebrations for over 30 years. Today, I came in to buy a last minute birthday cake for my husband and received the most terrible customer service of my life. When I asked about getting something made last minute, I was talked down to and dismissed. Fine. They didn't have any ready made cakes that were appropriate so I proposed that I purchase a number of brownies in the case and asked if they could please write happy birthday or something on them so it looked more official. Nope, that would be a special order. I asked if I purchased one of their cakes would they write happy birthday. Yeah. Okay, so could I pay you extra to write happy birthday on the brownies? Nope. Never. Not going to happen. Despite the inflexibility, I still ask to purchase 8 brownies, in the hopes that I can arrange them myself and put some candles on my own. When I ask for this the girl REFUSES to give me any of the brownies that are lined up. Instead she puts 1 random edge, 2 middle, 1 from the bottom, etc. When I asked if I could please have them all be from the same area, she said it was up to her "which ones she wanted to give me." I've never been told that I could not select something I am about to purchase. I almost walked out, but since these are my husband's favorite brownies and it is his birthday, I just sucked it up. I don't know who they are hiring to work this place nowadays, but the customer service has gone to *#@!. The young employees could literally care less if you've been a customer for 30+ years, if they don't want to help you, it's not going to happen. A sad day for me and my family indeed. read more

I planned my daughter's birthday party to be held at my parents that live in Gardena, CA yet I live in Arizona. All other bakeries I called required me to be present to place a custom cake order but not Becker's. I was able to email them a pic of what I wanted and they were able to accommodate. Nice old school bakery eight by the beach. I was surprised to find such fair pricing at such a prime location, small cookies were 75 cent, the huge oatmeal cookie I got under $2. The selection was rather sparse, I assume they bake much to order such as occasion cakes. If you are at the beach, this is a great place to pickup a sandwich. My favorite is their turkey/provolone on pumpernickel. It comes with a sugar cookie, yum! They have THE BEST cookies. You can also order a customized cookie, I've done that for Super Bowl parties. The only downside is that during the summer and busy days at the beach, you will have a really hard time getting a parking spot. So just keep that in mind if you are coming here as a destination :)! A simple sandwich menu, this is no Bay Cities or Zeldas, but they give u huge portions for a reasonable price. For 10 bucks, the bf and i shared a huge Beckers Special Sandwich and a red velvet cupcake with strawberry frosting and a complimentary cookie. They were out of French bread, so we settled with Squaw bread. The meats and cheese were tasty and bread was soft, but i felt that a trip to Trader joes, and i could have made the same thing (but some people know that i would never get around to do that-right Travis?). Your service really sux if my little niece noticed that you were being rude. Sunday after a late lunch I asked my niece what she wanted for dessert. I picked Becker since my niece wanted cupcakes and this bakery was on my bookmark since Cesar R wrote his review. There was only one customer before us and we were greeted right away. We had a hard time deciding because there were a lot of colorful pretty stuff there. We got cupcakes, cookies and cake pops. I noticed the worker wasn't really listening and kept asking us to repeat what we wanted. My niece said they gave us 1 bacon cupcake instead of one but I didn't really think anything of it. "Why was the worker being rude. I saw her face expression like she was unhappy to help us everytime we requested for more stuff?" That was the comment my niece said when we walked out. I immediately stopped walking and was stunned at her comment. I did notice the worker didn't really want to be there but my niece confirmed my suspicion. The baked goods were not good. Red velvet icing was sliding off cake when I opened my box. The service was even worse. Bacon: bacon makes everything better. The cake was tasteless and it was okay because of the bacon on top. They really should learn from My Delight Cupcakery how to make a great bacon cupcake. Red velvet cupcakes: didnt really taste like it but at least it was moist. Banana cupcake: could taste a little banana and frosting was super sweet. Bacon maple cookie: I couldnt taste the cookie at all. All I tasted was sugar. The bacon wasn't even attached to the cookie when I opened my bag. It was just like eating a slice of bacon plus a cookie with sweet maple icing. Cake pops vanilla and chocolate: The vanilla tasted better than the chocolate. I couldn't eat the chocolate. Vanilla tasted like weird sweet moist ball. My niece made a comment earlier today that Buttercelli is much better than that bakery near the beach. She said that the bacon cookie was nasty and she threw it away after she took a bite. 1 star!! Location, location, location. It's a block from the sand and Manhattan Beach Pier. That, plus....it's a bakery and more, as I discovered yesterday morning. I was headed to my hair salon, a few doors away, on an empty tummy. So I dropped into Becker's to grab some kind of food to take with me. Their baked goods on display are as colorful as a rainbow, eye candy to the max. And they have a sandwich menu as well: chicken salad, tuna salad, ham, turkey club, even a vegetarian sammie......and more, all in the $7-8 range. Cookies and Cupcakes and and Sweet Treats galore! My mom and I stopped by Becker's Bakery last Thursday afternoon to pick up something sweet to bring back to our group... While I'd been in once before, I didn't remember the selection and appearance of Becker's baked goods - nor did I realize that everything in the shop is pretty affordable too! We stocked up on a variety of big, beautiful cookies - over a dozen for less than $12 - and they were a hit! I'll have to remember to stop by Becker's to try their sandwiches next visit to Manhattan Beach - they looked delicious as well! "The Natural" is calling my name. I also noticed a sign that said Becker's creates 'picture cookies.' Bring in any picture or photo and they can put it on a cookie or cake for you... fun! read more

Lets start with the good, the cake for a birthday/ mothers day celebration was gorgeous. When we sliced and ate it, a totally different story. It was a chocolate and vanilla cake, we couldn't tell the difference between the two flavors. They taste the same like nothing and was kinda dry. Also the frosting was sweet... the end. We have been buying cakes here for years and years and they have been going steadily down hill (as my son pointed out.) Don't know what happened here but will go else where next time. I brought a box of 6 hybrids (Becker's version of cronuts) to a get together with my friends and we all enjoyed them immensely! We tried pumpkin spice, vanilla, chocolate, lemon, and cream-filled. Only the cream-filled ones have filling, by the way, so the flavoring is in the glaze on top and therefore on the subtle side. For the pumpkin spice hybrid, I was hoping for a pumpkin custard or cream filling, but even without, it was still good. I was able to place an order over email and pay ahead of time, so pick up was fast and easy, although that may vary depending on the parking situation at the time of pick up. I was lucky enough to find a spot on the street with time left on the meter. One of the better cronut versions I've tried in LA and not too spendy at $2 a pop. read more
