Becker's Bakery brings me back to my childhood days.. I haven't been here in years. It's still a charming neighborhood bakery located in downtown Manhattan Beach. They offer scrumptuous cakes, cookies, and pastries. I had the red velvet cupcake and the chocolate cupcake. Both were huge in size. The red velvet cupcake had a strange color to it. It was an "off red velvet" in color. For me the taste was a bit off as well. It didn't have that deep nice red chocolate taste to it. The cake itself could have been a bit moister for me as well. I liked the chocolate cup cake much better than the red velvet cupcake. Aside from the cupcakes, Becker's is a great neighborhood bakery. You don't find these gems often. 4 stars for the cake decorations, and 2 stars for the taste and quality. So I ordered a white cake with fresh strawberries filling, and butter cream frosting. Quite disappointed with the taste i must say. The cake was really dry, and there were barely any strawberries! There were probably only a total of six strawberries in the whole 7" cake, and the rest of the filling was just whipped cream. So disappointed! The butter cream frosting was nothing special...just your typical sweet butter cream frosting. I feel like even Costco makes better cakes than this one I got here! What IS nice about this place is how many decoration options they have. You can pretty choose any designs, whether it be 3D, add a photo on the cake, etc. and it'll all be the same price. The price is fairly decent, but like I mentioned, the cake itself wasn't all that great. read more

I'd drive to West LA and have a Sprinkles red velvet or carrot cupcake before I drive back to MB (which is closer for me by proximity). I saw whoever it was on Cupcake Wars( Food TV). They were eliminated in the first round, Their baker or representative was so confident he would NOT be eliminated- as a viewer my take on him was he was too confident, maybe a little cocky for his own good; hence elimination in the first round. I walked out of my bedroom and spotted a box from Becker's - a birthday surprise from my roommate. Inside I found a chocolate covered donut and a maple glazed cronut. Even the packaging was professional and presentable! I was planning on stopping for coffee and donuts from my usual donut place on the way to work, but that won't be happening anymore. Becker's just raised the bar. I started off with the chocolate covered since it was so alluring. The dough was very fresh, not too chewy but a nice firm base. The chocolate was not overwhelming either, a proper ratio of frosting to dough. It was gone in seconds. I ate the cronut later as a snack. I'd never had a full cronut before. Surprising since I love both croissants and donuts so much. It was delectable. Once again, very fresh. It had a nice, flaky base while maintaining its firmness. I'm not a huge maple fan but it was a solid touch. Added a sweetness but once again, without overdoing it. I'll definitely be back for more, even if it's out of my way before work. I used to love love love Beckers, 5 stars worthy. But this last time I came in they had gotten rid of their $10 lunch combo that was sooo amazing. Now for a sandwich, coffee ad cookie I paid $16!! The staff was friendly and helpful. I, of course, came in for the cupcakes. I liked the variety of sizes - mini, regular and large, $1.50, $2.75 (I think?) and $5 respectively. Cupcake presentation was very good - pretty and eye-catching colors (yellow, Tiffany blue, pink) along with the standard chocolate brown and white. The red velvet (my favorite, and how I gauge all cupcakeries) was just okay. I stumbled into this bakery on a whim. I wasn't really in the mood for anything but it's hard to turn down baked goods. The prices aren't listed which is unnerving to me, but I was pleasantly surprised that my oversized cookie and mini red-velvet cupcake was under $4. You could taste the love in them. Or maybe you can feel the sugar in each bite, but in a good way. In a way that you know someone made this from scratch. And that makes each bit okay! Becker's Bakery may not have the selection that some other bakeries in the area boast, but what they do, they do REALLY WELL. The cronuts are large, rich, and have an amazing flaky and moist texture. The donuts are yeasty, sweet, and light as air. I didn't get a chance to sample one of their many cupcakes, but the cookies were huge and chewy. In the area cronut wars, I thought Beckers was far superior to Torrance Bakery (though Torrance's cookies come out on top for me). I would even venture to say that my daughter was an addict (but I do have adult friends in town that have admitted their addiction, too ;) A block from the ocean, so there's only metered street parking out front. I have ordered their frosted cookies & cakes for parties. A big hit was putting a picture on the frosting (I think it's weird to have people bite into a picture of your face, but the kids like it). I went here to pick up a gingerbread house kit for my daughter for Xmas. This is the first time she's decorated a gingerbread house, so I decided to go get one that was already all packed up with a kit. I thought it was really awesome with the amount of candy and decorations that came with the kit, and also all the royal icing to really make a spectacular gingerbread house that your kid will admire and enjoy for a few weeks during the holidays. Just take a look at their website or my photo for the designs they can do! Also, at $56 for a half sheet (which easily feeds around 40 servings), it was close to half the price that other bakeries offered for its size. It also doesn't hurt that the carrot cake was absolutely delicious! Although it was fluffier than other carrot cakes I've had.. and does not have walnuts or raisins in it. Warning: closed on Mondays. This review is solely based on my experience with the Bakery staff for a custom birthday cake order. I find out Monday evening that my brother did not order a cake for my sister-in-laws 40th birthday party for that coming Saturday. Now that I am responsible for the cake, I wanted to make sure it was beautiful, tasted good, can feed up to 60 people and one to remember for a 40th birthday. I spent all day Tuesday searching and calling bakeries to see if they can take a last minute custom order. They all required a 2-3 week advanced notice and if they took my order, they charged over $200 and needed me to come in and pay in full that day. My boss then recommended I check out Beckers. I loved that their site breaks down the size of the cake, how many people it feeds and the cost. Plus, they had pictures of the different designs you can choose from. Their specialty is in kids cakes that are very festive, fun and whimsical. Because it was for a 40th birthday, I was looking for something more mature and elegant. I gave them a call anyway and was very pleased when they told me they could take my order last minute even though I knew it was a busy time for them (the week before Christmas). I then emailed them a picture of what I was looking for and customized it a bit based off the designs from the cakes on their site. I worked with Lindsey and she was very responsive. I broke down in email what I was wanting; design, colors and flavor. Wednesday afternoon, I spoke with her to confirm all the details and later that day she emailed me a sketch of my cake. By Wednesday evening she had all the information needed: name, pick up date, cake flavor, cc info, etc. and we were all set for Saturday pick-up! My cake was 2 tiered, 12"-8", feeds 60 people (although I believe it can feed up to 70). Top tier was chocolate with chocolate mousse, bottom tier was chocolate with vanilla buttercream. $155 total (no extra or surprise charges) and delicious! The cake design turned out exactly as expected and my sister-in-law loved it! My overall experience with Lindsey and the Bakery team was a pleasant one and I really appreciate that they worked with me in such short notice. I would recommend Becker's and use them again in the future. read more

I decided to order a cake from Becker's because they are considered a "high-end" bakery and was ok paying a premium. Upon picking the 7 inch cake, which was $30+, they didn't even have the correct box. They put it in a box with the lid half open. The cake was 3 inches above the box line, so it wasn't even close to being the right size. When I asked to put it in a proper box, they said they don't have boxes for that size of cake. Completely perplexing. They offered to put a piece of paper over the opening. When asked why they don't just order the correct box, they acted like I was out of my mind and said they would mention it to "management." Clearly, management knows how to order the correct boxes for its cakes. Even more perplexing, the owner was standing near by and didn't say a thing. Sure enough, while driving home, the paper caved in and ruined the icing on the edge of the cake. I immediately called the owner to voice my dissatisfaction and the employee said he "too busy" to take my call. Such a disappointment in a way small owner decides to run his business - zero awareness of customer experience. Don't bother ordering a cake from here, might as well order from Ralph's - you'll get a better experience at half the cost. read more

It was an early morning in Manhattan Beach and I was just searching for some hot tea to weather the marine layer. Lines were out the door for the more expected coffee shops, so I wandered into this bakery to try to see if they had warm drinks to accompany their baked goods. The place wasn't too crowded, but there were three girls behind the counter. All of whom were making it their life's goal not to make eye contact with me. One person was browsing on her phone, and another was staring straight down at the cash register when I was standing right in front of her. Finally I flagged someone down and asked if they had hot tea. She gave me a look like I had asked her to prepare me a porterhouse steak right in the middle of the bakery. 'TEA?! Uh.. no.' The attitude I received! It wasn't that strange a question, lady! People drink tea with their cakes and cookies sometimes, jeez! Anyway, I walked out feeling stupid and telling myself that no matter how good the baked items are here, I'd take my sweet tooth elsewhere.
