Finding Vietnamese and Japanese food on one menu when the cuisines are so different and countries so far apart is giving those spots you see in the suburbs claiming to serve "Asian food" and so I eyed Bedford Gardens with some suspicion and dismissed it entirely. But a friend who's taste I trust somewhat recommended it and when I learned they also have strong wifi I decided to bring my laptop and make a lunch stop here. The wifi was quite strong, which is more than I can say about most coffee shops, and there were tables galore available. I got two orders of their two roll lunch special, so I got to try 4 rolls-- spicy scallop, spicy tuna, yellowtail, and salmon. The fish was quite fresh, all rolls were well made, and the price can't be beat. I tried the Vietnamese coffee as well, which was nice and strong and the condensed milk made it absolutely delicious. I feel like I need to try their Vietnamese food as well to give a more thorough assessment of the place but everything I had so far was pretty solid, and it's also cute inside. read more

What immediately drew me to this spot is the garden dining area in the back. They almost tried to seat us inside the restaurant too, but luckily we request the back area. This space is aesthetic with all the greenery. Another thing I enjoyed is the huge variety of dishes from sushi and seafood boils to Vietnamese soups and sandwiches. It's perfect when you want a little bit of everything. My friend and I decided to each share the Bun Bo Hue ($24) and 5 Spice Pork Banh Mi ($14). The bun bo hue was flavorful and delicious. The meat was also tender, but just found the bowl to be quite pricey for the bowl. It's good and hits the spot though. As for the banh mi, this was just OK as the ingredients were minimal and the bread was a bit too hard. It did help by dipping the bread into the soup though to soften it up. It was freezing in NYC and I suddenly craved BBH. We were nearby and chose this spot since it was the closest. At first, I thought it was just a sushi restaurant, but they actually have much more. They asked if we wanted to sit inside or outside--we chose outside without thinking, and I'm so glad we did. The back garden is beautiful. They also give you a bell to ring when you're ready, which we loved because it gives you time and doesn't feel rushed. We ordered steamed shumai, brisket pho (extra brisket), and BBH. I thought $18 for pho was pricey compared to Houston--but I was wrong. The broth was sooo good, brisket slices were super thick, juicy, and fatty. You can tell it was cooked for a long time. The BBH was just as impressive--rich, beefy, and probably the closest to Vietnam I've had. They use pig tail instead of pork knuckle, which was so tasty. I didn't even need to add anything. Honestly, this might be one of the best pho and BBH spots we've tried--even coming from Houston's big Vietnamese community. It's pricey, but the quality, service, and atmosphere make it worth it. Rating: 3.5 Stars My friend and I stopped by randomly on Fourth of July around 1 PM. When we first walked in there was no one at the front so we just stood around for a bit before we took our seats. When someone finally stopped by, they gave us a choice of where we would want to sit and we chose one of the large booths up front. The booths themselves were large and spacious with comfortable cushioning on the seats. The only thing was the table was a bit dirty when we sat down. Service itself was a bit hit or miss. We got our menus, water and food pretty quickly but everything else was a bit on the slower side. We never had anyone check in on us nor did we get Utensils (except for one spoon when we got our appetizer). We had to ask for utensils after we already had one dish on the table which is pretty surprising since most places give you utensils right away. For food we decided to share: -FRIED VIETNAMESE SPRING ROLLS: The spring rolls were my favorite item that we ordered. They were nice, hot and flavorful. The fish sauce on the side was also a great compliment. We did also end up getting 5 spring rolls instead of just the normal 4 which was a nice surprise. -BANH MI: The flavor was good. There was a great assortment of meat in the banh mi but they were all pretty salty. I also wish there was more pate, since the amount was pretty sparse. I ate part of a half sandwich is I did not taste any pate. -PORK CHOP RICE: The rice was quite disappointing. It was not fragrant at all and a bit too moist and sticky. The pork chop on the side was also not great. Such a small piece of meat and overly salty. I am also used to have lemongrass pork chops and they did not use that flavor profile at all. The pickled daikon and carrots on the side were good though. Portion of everything was very small. All in all, a bit of a hit or miss Asian Fusion restaurant. Delicious Vietnamese food and decent sushi! Beautiful interior that was relaxing. We sat in the back of the restaurant and it was super relaxing. Stopped by around 12:30pm on a Saturday on our way to do some light shopping. We were getting little hungry and originally were going to stop at another place to grab light brunch. I saw this on google maps and decided to "walk" by and then decided to eat here instead. The interior was very pretty! Staff was very kind and easy going. We walked through the restaurant and sat in the back booth area. We ordered 2 Vietnamese ice coffees, original bahn mi, sashimi special roll, and Bun Bo hue. The Vietnamese coffee is freshly brewed and is just the way I like it! So good. Strong sweet and creamy. The bahn mi had great flavor and bread was crispy yet soft and fluffy. The bun bo hue was the star of our meal. Broth was so good and contained good amount of beef and ox tail. It's been awhile since I found a clean and tasty bun bo hue. Sashimi special roll was refreshing and paired well as an appetizer since it had no rice. Overall I highly recommend the Vietnamese food and decent sushi. I ordered for delivery and the toro special roll is so good! I liked it more than the scallop rolls. I didn't like the crunchy scallop roll so much because it had a lot of filler. I also ordered the bun bo hue and it tasted like a good spicy beef soup but not the traditional BBH that I was looking for. They have a partnership with mama pho on Grand Street, which is a 24 hour Vietnamese, casual takeout dining spot that I recall is very delicious. However, this brisket & ribeye pho was not flavorful. The broth was pretty bland even after adding Sriracha and hoisin. they have a very extensive Japanese menu with sushi and Ramen. the service was great and they didn't rush us to leave however it was not a busy evening so maybe that's why. Was starving after spending the day at the Bathhouse and just randomly walked by Bedford Gardens. We were a party of 4 and were seated in the back which was very nicely decorated with bamboos and awnings which gave you an outdoor but indoor vibe. The service was attentive and nice. It also helps that they have a bell system on each table so you can just ring then when you need service. I ordered the bun rieu with beef balls and a side of spring rolls. The food came out pretty quickly and was very satisfying. The rest of my party also enjoyed their meal. Being half Vietnamese and growing in San Jose, CA for a good 30 years of my life, I grew up around lots of pho establishments as well as homemade pho. I was excited when I saw some posts about Bedford Gardens having both Japanese and Vietnamese food - namely the Vietnamese food. Papaya Salad: 2/5 I wish that there was a more affordable option for a pho special (dac biet) - here the price point for the closest "house combination special" is over $40 which definitely is quite steep and would make my mom and grandmother grasp at their hearts price-wise. I would consider coming back for the pho as I prefer the southern twist to pho as opposed to northern. Nice find on Bedford Avenue close to the L train. We stopped in for lunch for the first time today and are so glad that we did! The restaurant is spacious and nicely decorated. When we first started visiting a few years ago, this place was styled more as a "food hall" with a few different restaurants serving food, though we always ordered Vietnamese food anyway every time - we popped in this weekend and noticed the far back section that used to be a sushi bar has been replaced with some lovely seating arrangements, and the front area has been built out with these lovely wooden roofs. It makes the place feel so lovely and comforting. We had our yummy chicken banh mi, along with some veg gyoza which were both delicious, as usual! Solid drink options - alcoholic and non-alcoholic. What makes this place extra great also are the kind servers and their attention to detail, as well as the beautiful setting of the restaurant itself and their backyard. I tried Bedford Gardens for the first time tonight & WOW - this place has everything & it's all equally delicious. I ordered online & was able to order a couple of dishes from the different restaurants they have onsite. I really liked my rolls & sashimi from sushi basho - the fish was really fresh and the rice was perfectly cooked. This is definitely going to be my new go to spot for sushi. The Pork ramen was normal ramen - nothing spectacular but it was still good because it's ramen. The soup dumplings are delicious. We went here on a whim on a Friday night. "Bedford Gardens" is not the typical name for a Vietnamese/Asian fusion-y place but don't let it deceive you! Seating was plentiful. We opted to sit in the back, which has a great ambiance--it feels a bit like you've walked out into a private garden, in keeping with the name. My friend got the tropical thunder, which she loved, and I had the lychee tea with lychee jelly. It's pretty sweet and comes without ice, which is nice, and the lychee flavor is great. It doesn't taste artificial or floral-like, which I've noticed with some lychee drinks at other restaurants. We started off with the seaweed salad, which was good, and did the sushi taco temaki combo and one of the eel special rolls (not the giant eel roll, but the other one, maybe the dragon roll?). The fish was excellent quality and really delicious. We also got the soup dumplings and beef fried rice. Both were good, but the sushi is really the highlight. I later ordered some pho from here for delivery and it was incredible. The broth is so good. Be warned though that if you get the ribeye pho, the ribeye comes raw and the broth (which comes separately packaged) is probably not going to be hot enough to cook it, so I had to microwave it. Service was very quick but a bit off, like we weren't given soup spoons with the soup dumplings and had to ask for other utensils so we could split up the rice. They do have a buzzer though so you can always flag someone down if you need anything. read more
