Best of the best in vegetarian fare. It's an instant favorite of mine when i'm in the area. I know Michael C. was talking about how this place seems to be a niche joint exclusive to the vegetarians, but I never got that vibe. I didn't walk into this place wearing organic cotton and a beanie; I actually went in wearing aviators and was still treated more than fairly. I got the tuna sandwich on pita with beets(?), carrots, lettuce, spinach, and tomato. Pair that up with the miso sauce and it was pretty great. I also had a tofu/vegetable empanada. It was the first time I had tried tofu and hardly noticed, tasted like a soft chicken. Definitely well-seasoned. To top it off, I had this green smoothie, forgot the name but it looked super weird and came out to be THE best smoothie i've ever had. Next time I go i'll get whatever they're serving. This place is amazing! You could walk by and never even know its there. The front is a tiny, two aisle grocery store, with vitamins and various vegan and health food items. In the back there is a small counter where the friendly owner will greet you with samples of whatever he's making that day. When I first walked in he handed me samples of two different types of soup, pasta, and various other dishes. I ordered the seitan and mushroom pie. AMAZING! It was so good and fresh. It really had the best flavor and everything in it was cooked to perfection. I also had the squash soup, which was sweet and creamy and wonderful. To wash it all down I had a fresh juice- beet, carrot, celery and apple. Yes, I know this sounds gross, but trust me its not. It is so good for you and the apple pretty much is the dominant flavor. My sis had "the rainforest" which is a fresh juice/smoothie with avocado, banana, and I don't know what else, but it was very good. There isn't a lot of room to sit, only a counter, and two small tables out front. And the place was packed even though it was a thursday afternoon. Honestly it is worth it. I would stand and eat if I had to. And even though the place was packed we didn't feel rushed by anyone, everyone seemed to be in a great mood. The chef is a quirky Brazilian dude named Carlos that entertains his die hard fans with his Seitan Pie, Soy Chicharron and vegan Saltena which i might add taste closer to to a real saltena than most spots and it doesn't even have meat! whoa. It is hard to get a seat during lunch since the business executive lunch people and the newly retired older folks on a health kick are busy yapping away and gawking at what eachother ordered. It's cute, theres a sense of community when people in all walks of life are guzzling down shots of wheatgrass and passing around that papaya hot sauce Carlos makes. I occasionally try to eat vegetarian/vegan - in no way am I a sworn meat-eater. I'll eat veggie if it's interesting and tastes good. Sadly, we don't seem to have many options that qualify on the "interesting" front. Having clocked the positive Yelp reviews for Beehive, a place my parents used to hit up for vitamins in the 1980s, I was mildly excited to finally make it over to the Red-Bird Schenley Park area for lunch. Upon arrival, I was informed that they didn't have anything, except for veggie sandwiches, and cheese sandwiches. Groan. Veggies are fine in a sandwich, densely layered upon something thick and meaty. But veggies, as the main event? Sigh. Kill me now. The sandwich was some lettuce, tomato, carrot and sprout affair on whole wheat bread. It tasted as dull as it sounds. Some vinaigrette was provided in a bottle, and that helped the sandwich out somewhat. OK, it filled me up. Fine. But I knew that was fool's gold, and I'd be hungry again in 30 minutes. I noted a cake of some sort sitting on the counter, in one of those containers you'd have expected to see on an old-timey 1950s Woolworth's lunch counter. I inquired. It was some kind of vegan strawberry-blueberry cake. It saved the meal. With what tasted like cream cheese icing, this cake was actually quite good. It wasn't over-sweetened, and tasted like real strawberries and blueberries. I'd go back for the baked goods, but to earn more stars from me - I'm gonna need more than a carrot-and-sprout sandwich. read more

Like most jealously gaurded secrets, you would never know it is there, but you won't need a password or a secret knock to get in. I passed this joint a dozen times, and never knew I was missing such a gem. My date took me here on lunch between classes one day. I din't get why we were gonna drive to South Miami for food. Once again, the cop pleasantly surprized me. Walk all the way back, or you may miss it. The girl behind the counter is gonna give you a sample of soup. Don't ask questions, my date says, just try. I never ask what the specials are, he tells me, I just eat it. I make a mess when I cook. I love cooking on campfires. I've cooked on a boat. So the state of a kitchen doesn't bother me too much when I eat. The counter at the Beehive looks like it's barely holding up the massive juicers and mounds of fresh fruit and veggies piled in various containers, ready to be mashed violently for your enjoyment. However, speaking of juice, pinapple juice was liquid gold, no sugar added, and a fresh damn pinapple was chopped up in front of my face to make it. Worth the wait. OM effin' G. So damn good I sucked it down like a turbocharged Hoover. This is not just a juice bar, though. The rest of the food: just as good. My date's mushroom pie? Fab. German potato salad? Good enough that the Swiss girl didn't compare it to mom's. Side salad? Ripe tomatoes, avocados, carrots, sprouts, and (yay!) non-iceberg lettuce? Hells yes. Brown rice with veggies? Delicious. And sugar and flour free orange cake. I am pretty sure that is what heaven would taste like if it was vegan. Staff? So warm I felt like I was in my own damn kitchen. We got there at 1:30 and had our choice of stools, but by two this place didn't have a free spot, and I'm told that is the normal state of affairs. I stopped by the Bee Hive on Saturday to grab some lunch and boy was it GOOD!!!! I had stuffed zucchini w/ red pepper sauce and brown rice mixed with lentils and caramelized onions.....YUM!!!! Before I took off, I grabbed two seitan empanadas which made for a delicious late night snack. I've never been let down by this place. They serve delicious vegan dishes made fresh daily, and they also have a set menu with great sandwiches and smoothies. The daily menu is never the same which keeps it really interesting. Don't get it twisted, I'm not a fanatical vegan. I eat meat occasionally. In fact, I was raised in a Hispanic house hold where rice, beans and some kind of meat was served daily.. so don't think it won't please your palate if you're a meat eater. The staff is very friendly and extremely knowledgeable. It almost feels like you're eating on the kitchen counter in your own home. A bohemian setting, with plates and cutlery that are mixed and matched. The seating arrangement is a little tight and there's usually not enough space to sit during lunch. I'd love nothing more than to buzz happily around this beehive every day for lunch! What a spot. This place is a prime example of how invaluable Yelp is - never in a million years would I have found it without a little help from fellow Yelpers, and I'm so happy I did! I knew what to expect in terms of atmosphere, having read all the reviews, so I headed back to the counter, ready for anything. Carlos, (the owner?) was a trip. Cracking jokes and making friends with everyone at the counter. It was such a cozy little group, everyone friendly & open, smiling and chatting. Carlos immediately gave me samples and launched into the daily specials and full menu. I was totally overwhelmed! Rarely do I have so many non-meat options! For the life of me, I can't remember the name of what I ordered, but it was some kind of corn cake (polenta?) with veggies, topped with mushroom sauce. It came with a fresh little side salad, too. Yum. Plus I had a banana strawberry smoothie - rich, smooth & delicious - so long Smoothie King! When I cashed out, he processed my debit card, but there was no spot for tip (you have to tell him in advance). So I decided to order a dessert so I could give him his well-earned gratuity. I went with the carrot cake - egg free, sugar free, etc. Surprisingly delicious! All in all, I think it was like $10 something for my smoothie and entree. Can't beat that. I will be back, often. Love this place. I come here as often as I can, and usually grab a bite to eat and some empanadas to keep in the fridge. Carlos, the chef is fantastically kind and makes everything fresh every day. It's all vegan, which didn't bother me when I ate meat (it's realllllyyyyy good) and is much appreciated now. Everything is fresh and home-made. It's all very good. Carlos will let you try anything before you decide what you want. Smoothies and juices are good too. (Spirulina smoothie especially!) I guess some people are put off by how old everything is but I always see everything washed thoroughly and the staff washing their hands all the time. I think people are confusing clutter and age with cleanliness, to be honest. I really don't know what else to say. Just go here. It is so true when they say that the dingiest and ugliest places make the best food. And this applies here, no offense to any Beehive employees or owners. I have to admit, it's not the most beautiful place and it is a bit intimidating to enter at first. But if you can tough it up and push your way through all the healthy all natural stuff for sale, you'll find yourself perching yourself up on one of the few barstools in the back of the store. There you'll find the eccentric chef gladly eager to start a conversation. You can choose for him to make you something off the menu and a fresh juice as well. Or you can eat one of the daily specials (which I've heard is never the same and depends on his mood of the day). The empanadas are to die-for, literally. Ok maybe not. But they are really THAT good. Beehive has become a treasure of the neighborhood. I guess cvs buying out their former location was a godsend. They've really enhanced my my quality of eating since I will get food here when I have the urge for take out. Well the place has an organic and natural food mart as well as a small cafeteria style eatery. The mart has plenty of organic and natural products. Even their candy aisle has healthier versions of gum and snack bars. Great for herbal supplements and teas. The owner of the cafe is usually there and always funny and helpful. The food is a creative and delicious fusion of vegan and vegetarian friendly, organic ingredients. I am really impressed with the excellent flavor and the reasonable prices. Every day there are different specials and I've enjoyed them all. The "vegetarian" chicharrones are very good and available a few times a week. They make empanadas with different fillings like tofu and spinach, or seitan, veggie ham and cheese, soy chicken nugget, etc. They also have their own version of a guava and cheese pastelito. They make entrees with plenty of organic and local veggies. Their vegetable soup is awesome. I love how they will give you a sample of what's on special. I recently had a baked plantain with soy picadillo which was really good. I remember the "three amigos" dish which was an appetizer made with sweet potato and beans served with a home made pico de gallo and chips. My first love was the grain burger. It's a veggie burger patty with plenty of veggies and a miso sauce that is spectacular. The sauces are also available on the counter for eating in. They offer plenty of sandwiches and salads and hot entrees. Oh, and I can't forget the desserts. They'll have a cake or pie made with seasonal and local fruits. The cupcakes are gluten free and they have these vegan brownies that are orgasmic. The juices and smoothies are another bonus from this place. Their green juice is spectacular and way cheaper than whole foods. They also have plenty of smoothie options. These are all reasonably priced. Lots of good stuff available: spirulina, wheatgrass, ginger. Love the mojito. My son likes the rainforest smoothie. I'll have "the hulk" after a workout. I really have to say that the environment is always very friendly and welcoming. It feels like I'm over at a friend's house having great food. The owner and staff seems to know their regulars and treats everyone well. This is one local business that I will support as much as I can. Remember to get there early because the good stuff can run out. The service at the food station was not pleasant at all. I asked for one of their popular juices and asked them to add some watermelon and cucumbers the girl at the counter said, "we just ran out of watermelon and anyway those would really ruin the juice." (There was watermelon in one of their refrigerators in the front of the store) but honestly I was so taken back by her poor and dismissive attitude that I didn't want to get into it. I am an avid juice bar goer so I was excited to try Beehive and never have I encountered a person so negative and down right unwilling to add a fruit to a juice that the customer is asking for... and mind you I was willing to pay extra for it. I am very open to getting constructive criticism and listening to someone's opinion but people's taste buds are different and judging by her reaction to my request she didn't really care enough to consider that. Maybe those fruit and veggie choices would "ruin" the juice for her but not for me. Having had that unpleasant experience I wasn't even excited to try the juice anymore... I really wanted to like this place. Not happening. It was recommended by my acupuncturist, so I was really looking forward to try it. It was Saturday morning. I arrived around 9:30 to the mini market/healthy food place, and the cashier told me the restaurant will open at 10. So I waited, no big deal. When one girl arrived, I was the first in line. I wanted to try one of their sandwiches and a veggie juice. For my surprise she told me there was no food to make sandwiches, because it was too early; excuse me, is this a restaurant but you don't have food to serve your patrons because is too early, at 10 a.m.? That was indeed a first-timer... The only thing she can offered me was a "picadillo" empanada, made with walnuts and spices. I had the re heated empanada and a green juice. I was not a happy camper. The empanada was cold inside, however, I must said, the flavors were interesting. The only reason I gave this place 2 stars instead of one, was the green juice. It was very tasty and best of all, great deal for the value, $4.95 in comparison with the $7 I usually pay at Whole Foods. Will I come back to Beehive? Probably not. Well, not really. read more

Came to this place and was weary due to the mixed reviews. The place appears to be in the midst of some sort of renovation/expansion...which is no excuse for how dirty the food prep station was. I ordered the grain burger and watched in dismay as it was pulled from a freezer, microwaved and tested for being thoroughly heated by an ungloved finger being poked into the middle of it. I was apprehensive bc I don't like red stuff and this has beets but she assured me you can barely taste them so I went for it. SOOOOO AMAAAAZING. There's just something about a fresh juice that makes me feel like I'm the healthiest person alive even though I'm definitely NOT. This place is a hidden gem in Miami. When all you want is the quaintness of a small deli and good for the soul food this is your spot. It shares the space with a natural foods store. I was actually really sick when I went and I am so glad I did because I honestly think this place helped me recover. I got the prescription juice (deeeeeelicious) and the lentil soup (I loved the soup so much I got another to go for my next meal). My husband got a tuna wrap that was also very delicious. Nestled in the back of a quaint, little health food store, Beehive may just be the best place for vegetarian/vegan food in Miami. And unlike many of the city's health food restaurants, it won't cost you half a pay check to eat here. I've read a few reviews by people whining about how "cluttered" the place is, or even went so far as to call it filthy. Well if you're a spoiled brat who doesn't understand the concept of limited space, then maybe you'd feel that way, but it's as clean as any other restaurant that cares about providing an excellent experience, and that they do. Beehive's small size makes for some very intimate ambiance. Customers and staff are constantly chatting back and forth, and everyone seems to know one another by first name. The food is excellent, and there's always a nice variety to choose from. I usually start with two options, for example, a broccoli/tofu pie with kale slaw, usually enough to hit the spot. It's also not a bad idea to just opt for one main item, plus a side salad. The salad portions are generous, and include avocado, sprouts, and shredded beets, not just your typical run-of-the-mill salad ingredients. Try it with their homemade miso dressing, very pleasant and mild. The desserts are exceptional. I've always found vegan friendly desserts to be very hit or miss, but they seem to have it down. Their cakes especially are usually superb, especially the blueberry. Just give it a shot, they don't have a ton of loyal patrons for nothing. You'll leave feeling great. read more

DELICIOUS. This is the best Vegan place I've been to in Miami. The chefs are playful and fun. They love talking to everyone in the place. The restaurant has a bunch of loyal customers and for a good reason. The food is fresh, delicious, and inspired. I ate a dish called Tres Amigos that came with a sweet cilantro salsa on top with a small salad. The presentation is simple and lovely. I had the carrot, beet, celery juice that the other reviewer mentioned and it was DELICIOUS, sweet and nutritious. I am going to make sure that I go back there again and again. The place is absolutely a hole in the wall, but the service and food is so good that it doesn't matter. It's funny how I pass by here a lot of times and I have never noticed this place. Small market/restaurant. We came in to get a smoothie. Everything is organic, vegan etc. They gave us a sample of the soup of the day and was very good. My only problem is that this place needs a remodel. At first sight when you see where they cut the fruits and prepare the foods, it makes you not want to get anything. The aprons the employees were wearing were all dirty and It just gave a really bad impression. I'm really glad that a place like this exists. Other websites like zagat seem to focus on restaurants that are fancy, and aesthetically pleasing, but which often have overpriced, touristy food. Beehive was an awesome little local place with the most generous, kind person running it. I believe the owner/chef's name was Carlos and he was so friendly from the second we walked in. He gave us samples of everything, explained the ingredients in everything and really made you feel at home. His great attitude and personality has created a really communal spot where everyone that came in seemed to be regulars. In short, this place was excellent AND was priced so well.
