I come here all the time. I grab a pint before a movie at Academy Theater or after dinner. Lindsay (the bartender) is friendly, knowledgeable, and has great recommendations if the 20 taps are too much to choose from. Cold case has a great selection of cans and bottles of beer and cider at a reasonable price. This is not a dinner place. Some of the other reviews talk about how it needs a kitchen, and it needs a full menu. It doesn't NEED anything. It's called Beer Bunker for a reason. Get a great meal at one of five critically acclaimed restaurants (Observatory, Redwood, Country Cat, Tanuki, Miyamoto) that are literally down the street, THEN treat yourself to a NW IPA or craft cider. When it comes to beer, I am an equal opportunist. With a selection ranging from a 40oz of PBR to a finely crafted micro brew, Beer Bunker caters nicely to the full beer spectrum. As a casual bar goer, I feel welcomed by the nostalgic atmosphere. The hanging lights, made of classic beer cans, hover peacefully above a bar constructed from what appears to be an old shuffleboard table. The collection of beer memorabilia, although large, does not overpower the pleasent social atmosphere. Love this place. They have a good rotating tap list, and always have two or three ciders on as well. They also carry many bottles that aren't as easy to come by at your average store. The vibe is always relaxed and friendly. A great spot to go for a beer if you don't want the crowded bar feel. read more

I've been to Montavilla's newest beer bar a few times now, and I'm digging it. It's walkable from my house, so I will definitely continue to frequent the place. They've got room for improvement, but here's what's good about the BB: - Nice open space, complete with roll-up door in the back, leading out to picnic tables in the back lot. - Cool, semi-industrial aesthetic, fits in perfectly with the neighborhood. - good, entirely local/regional tap list of 12 beers - friendly staff - great playlists spinning (heavy on the Beastie Boys, though.) Here's what they could improve on: - Rotate the beers more often. I visited 3 times in the span of 2-3 weeks, and it seemed like only one or two of the tap choices had changed. Hopefully as business picks up, the kegs will blow faster and they can rotate in more variety. - Hire only staff who are knowledgeable about beer. Only one of the bar staff I've talked to thus far seems to know much about beer. The others? well, I'm gonna be charitable and say that they must have been hired for their pretty personalities. - Better food choices. Pita pizzas are too time-consuming and heavy...they would be better off offering more snacky foods that are lighter and less labor-intensive, especially during the summer. - Utilize the huge space better. The bottle-cooler side of the shop could probably hold twice as much cooler square-footage as it does now. This is Portland, you need to step up your game if you think you're gonna draw any business away from places like Belmont Station. read more

A brand new business just opened in the Montavilla neighborhood! The Beer Bunker is a bottle shop and tavern, serving beer on tap, a limited food menu and selling a selection of ales, lagers, ciders and sodas from the wall of coolers. If opening night is any indication, the Bunker will be another huge success for Overby Ventures. The tavern is very casual with concrete floors and metal tables, a few conversation areas with sofas, a long bar with great barstools, darts on the wall and ample outside seating for the summer months. As you can tell from the other reviews, the Beer Bunker exists for people who like beer. They offer some pizza and other things, but mostly beer-- on tap and in a huge cooler. There are some tables, TV's, a patio, maybe some decorations... but I was distracted by all the beer (and my beautiful girlfriend). As is fitting in beer heaven, the bartenders are cool. If you don't want to eat their delicious pizza, they let you bring your own food in with you, and they are able and willing to discuss the beer you are probably trying for the first time. I haven't seen that many bars around Portland with such a large variety of beer, which is why I think they deserve a fifth star. So if you don't live within walking distance (like I do), arrange for a ride home, because there is so much good beer waiting for you at Beer Bunker. read more

When your product is locked up and there is only one person in your shop browsing it, it would probably be wise next time to at least acknowledge their existence if you hope to get a sale. I wanted this to be a great thing for our neighborhood but it falls flat. The selection is okay, but not great, the prices are probably as high as they are because they don't do enough business. If you're looking to grab a bottle of something local that's not in Fred Meyer's case and you're willing to spend a little extra, this is a good place to check. If you want to find something new, relax over a pint, or fill a growler, there are better options within eyesight of the bunker. read more

I've been here short of a full hand's fingers. The selection of beer was alright. They had a raspberry wheat beer on tap that was tasty and rivaled that of Miss Ruby herself. However ... service was MEH and let me warn you of the setting. It's cold and uninviting. A college boy's dorm room with a dirty tube sock on the wall is warmer than this place. Stumbled on this place last week, finally open after months displaying a yellow OLCC app in window. Unusual collection of beers on tap and in cooler. Draft sold in 4oz sampler, 12oz goblet, pint, or I think growler. Bottled prices are competitive. Draft seemed a bit steep to me. I can remember when you could get a pitcher for a buck. Sigh. Before a movie at the Academy Theater, we stopped and had a sampler- only $5, a really well priced buzz. All of the beers I tried were unique and delicious. The bartender was nice, but the place seemed dark and sparse, kind of thrown together at the last minute. Perhaps there will be good things yet to come from this place in the future. read more

Second stint at BB, and I'm still waiting to be wowed. I'm wishin', hopin' and prayin', because the potential is there. I like the vibe, I dig all the retro metal furnishings (reminds me of high school science lab), I'm super glad they finally put umbrellas on the long picnic tables out back (all that concrete gets pretty sweltering), but I recognized a couple of issues this weekend. First, it's a damn good thing we're hopheads, because the beer selection ran amok with the lupulin and they were out of the one and only pilsner on tap. Luckily, they do have a modest bottle selection that seems to be growing, so the hop haters could choose from that. Second...and here's the only major flaw that NEEDS to be corrected asap. The food is crap. The pizza also reminded me of high school science lab. With high ABV beers, you need to serve some noms, if for no other reason than liability. Even good ole Belmont Station has a variety of decent fare, so your liver doesn't explode. I hope they rectify this over time, because we're so down with a good beer bar in our hood. read more

I went to this place frequently when they first opened but they always seemed to be out of at least half of the beers they had listed on their menu. I went in there this past weekend and the man behind the bar was so unpleasant and downright rude that I walked out. I love this space. Went here the other day after work to check it out and watch the Blazers game. Its right down the street from where I work and very close to Roscoes one of my favorite beer bars in town. This place has a very cold feeling if that makes any sense. The bartender was not very helpful he was just playing on his laptop the whole time I was there I had to basically approach him for beer. They have a cooler on the other side of the bar which they keep locked, you have to get the bartender to retrieve a beer if you want one from a bottle. Their tap selection was really not exciting at all, definately not heavy hitter beers from the Pac NW, it was mostly smaller breweries or ones that I didn't care for really. I ended up having a couple beers one of which was from a new brewery in Vancouver the other was a Walking man IPA. I've had the walking man beer before and this one was definately off, makes me think the tap lines need cleaning. In a town with tons of world class beer bars these guys need to step it up big time to even crack the top 20 I'd say. read more

A good bar otherwise, but is home to the WORST BARTENDER IN PORTLAND. I've lived in the neighborhood for years and put up with the dude's attitude but have finally had enough and am writing this in the hopes his manager or others will see this. Lindsey is a gem. She is sweet, friendly, fun, and knowledgeable. The other dude with long, dirty blonde hair, I believe his name is Mike, is disinterested, dismissive, and rude. Every. Time. I think he was in a good enough of a mood once and cracked a bit of a smile, but that's it. I used to go in much more frequently and countless times found him sitting at his laptop or phone, look up to see me, then ignore me completely. I have stood directly in front of him at the bar and he has kept himself busy with everything other than taking my order at an empty bar, only for him to finally turn to me after making me wait and say "what?" One time he was on his computer, looked up, said "wait," then went back to the computer for a whole minute before slowly closing it and taking my order without another word, not even a "what would you like?" or "sorry about that, I had to finish something up." The latter would have been understandable, even a question would have helped, but he went with neither. I have never once had a friendly chat with him, or even a pleasant interaction. I'm not picky when it comes to service, as long as I'm served, but this guy has consistently made a point of making it difficult. I actively avoid going in when I see him behind the bar, and my friends in the area do the same. I made the mistake of going in recently and was unpleasantly surprised to find his disposition hasn't changed and left promptly. Fire this guy and put Lindsey in there full time. Or at least inform him it's one of the main duties of his job to ask people what they want to drink, pour it, and not to push his weight around or whatever it is he's doing. He's driving away customers and can't be worth what he's being paid. read more

ATMOSPHERE: I laughed at this dive when I walked by and looked in the window. Cast-away office chairs at a low counter. Looked like the most ridiculous low-budget hole you can imagine. So I had to go in, just to say I did. Well, surprise, it wasn't that bad. Nice bar (reminded me of the bar at Apex, but much deeper, maybe 3'), with a matching theme elsewhere (tap-handle shelf, and a few other places). Barstools matched, and had sort of a mid-century bowling alley theme. I'm not sure if they were authentic, or modern replicas. There was lighting directly over the bar, which is a must for me. And it was really cool, shades made from antique beer cans. The buildout was a bit ghetto in spots, especially the "patio" seating, which is just some picnic tables out in the back parking lot. Obviously some thought went into the decor here, so I suppose either they ran out of money, or it's a short lease and they didn't want to sink a bunch of $ into the space. SERVICE: Fine. Nothing outstanding, but nothing to complain about. FOOD: I wasn't offered a food menu, strangely. I saw a prep board and a little oven, and I saw a pizza coming out. I don't know what else they may offer. BEER: Nice selection. Maybe about a dozen taps. Wide variety, something for everybody. Surprising bottle selection. For example, I noticed bottles of The Dissident, a rare Deschutes product that is almost never seen sitting on the shelves in Portland. But you can also get a 40oz of PBR for $2.99, if that's your thing. PRESENTATION: Nice glassware. My "shorties" came in a glass style I've never seen. It was sort of a mini goblet. The guy next to me was drinking from a unique full-size goblet. But I imagine they probably serve most beers in shakers, just depends on the beer style. PRICE/VALUE: Let's see, I think I paid $3.00 to $3.50 for my 5oz pours. Those were moderately exotic beers, but even so, I'd say they were priced a wee bit high, but not beyond reasonable. OVERALL: I bet there are people who just love this place, but for me it just didn't quite feel right. They have a lot to offer though, in the sense that they're obviously trying, and they're not a cookie-cutter bar, so I do encourage you to give them a try. read more
