Ordered 2 simple hot dogs . One with mustard only , one with ketchup & relish. This next step should have warned me to run. Paid with a credit card . She handed me the receipt to sign . I laid it on the counter in front of me and signed . When I went to pick it up , it stuck to the filthy ancient wooden counter . After carefully peeling it off I handed it to my non English speaking waitress. We waited and watched as an older woman came in to order a coffee and her request for what she wanted in it was milk . That's it.... milk . Impossible to get that request through this waitresses thick skull. My orders up , so I take it and go back to my car. My wife opens her hot dog and it is drowned, I'm talking soaking wet , absolutely covered in ketchup and relish. COVERED. Did I mention Covered. So much there was no way to contort her arm/ hands to lift it from its wrapper with being covered in these soaking wet condiments . Moving on I open mine and it's covered in a river of ketchup. I bring it back in and "clueless" takes it from me and hollers through the 2 foot square hole in the wall , to the "nit wit" cook to make me another one. This time with the requested mustard . And this time , just a little bit of mustard. I wait and wait and wait for what seems like way too long to cook a hot dog on an already hot grill. He finally passes it through this 2 foot square hole to the waiting waitress. I go back to the car. My wife has finished Her hot dog after wiping it off with 7 napkins. I open my hot dog . Yup its mustard this time. But it looks like it ways lifted up with a pair of tongs and shoved into a baking pan full of mustard . I can only see the 2 ends of this hot dog and only the bottom half of the bun. We are laughing and my wife knows me well enough to stop me from going back inside and seeing if I can fit this into Gordon Ramsey's ear hole . I get out and throw it into the trash barrel along with my wife's napkin mess. I don't even go back in for a refund. Smart move on my part . No ambulance or paddy wagon. No tablecloths here- just your basic road-side grub and ice cream shakes to boost up the cholesterol count.. Of course, it's all good (for what it is), but I always feel guilty after I eat here. I still love this place because it's a greasy flat top grill diner. The milk shakes are delicious, especially my newly discovered Oreo Milkshake made with chocolate soft serve (uhmm yummmm). If you're looking for the best-quality-locally-grown-organic-vegetarian-fed-antibiotic-free-blessed-by-a-rabbi-a-priest food, you should probably go somewhere else. We headed to Bart's one day prior to taking off in our kayaks. Behind Bart's there's a boat launching dock. Tons of people go there to kayak and canoe. The location is nice for a quick snack. On the day I went there was a car show going on so parking was very tight. The place was extremely busy. The hot dog... eh nothing special. My coworker used to tell me about how great the hot dogs are here, when I tried it for myself I was not impressed. Sure it was greasy and grilled but that was it. RATINGS:... John: 7.5/10, Me: 7/10. John said, "Had a footlong, Bogner Meats dog - it was a little bit thinner, however the mustard, onion, sauce was plain yellow mustard. Chili was very sweet. There was no spice to it. It was a good chili though. It was a split-top bun, toasted. Flavor-wise it was decent, like I said it had a sweet flavor to it. I liked it. I'm going with a 7.5 though as I needed a little more spice to get up into that 8 range. I said, "Bart's Drive-In since 1946, the place is legendary in this area. We are in Windsor- it's nice because the restaurant borders I believe the Connecticut River (correction: Farmington River). It's really kind of cool. As far as the Bart's half of the establishment: What a fantastic place!! The owner, Donald Trinks, is a fantastic guy, and also the town Mayor. The restaurant serves great food at a great pace. I love the nostalgic environment of the restaurant. As far as the Beanery Bistro half of the establishment: Also a fantastic place! Todd and his wife are great people, and run the Bistro very well! They make very good food! In addition they serve great coffee, and AMAZING, home-made doughnuts! Made fresh every day, they are my favorite doughnuts in Connecticut, hands down! Was driving by on our New England road trip and decided to stop in to refuel with coffee and a sweet or two. Much has changed at The Beanery since our first visit years ago. It has a quant and country feel to it now with some modest renovations like a refurbished front counter and some new paint. We were excited to see smoothies added to the menu along with custom sandwiches and fresh baked donuts and pastries. We loved the chocolate raspberry coffee and highly recommend the maple Pecan donut! The prices were very reasonable especially compared to lesser quality mega bucks coffee chains. It was definitely worth our revisit! I would make this my daily, if I didn't live 1000 miles away. read more

NOPE! What was once the local place to be on a typical summer weekend afternoon and evening for me growing up and then my kids is now just another grease hole with no personality or anything good to remember it for. One of the main attractions of Bart's was the open kitchen/order counter but that's gone since they closed off that area to the public. I saw the doors closed and no cars in the parking lot on a beautiful Saturday afternoon so I thought it was closed until I drove up to it and saw one single person at the register looking like he wanted to be anywhere but there. We figured we'd give it a chance. The food was only ok. The dogs are still long and they do give you a fair amount of toppings but the amount of fries was disappointing to say the least. No ice for soda and only cans which isn't a deal breaker. Heading outside to the picnic tables, they were at least clean but the overflowing garbage with bugs flying around it wasn't a good look and maybe the kid playing on his phone could have taken a couple minutes to empty the garbage. People can multitask. Long story short, it's not the place to be anymore. With local businesses going away everyday,, they need to bring back the format that was working and what they were known for. I don't mind paying a little more if this is what needs to happen to get the old Bart's back but they never should have changed it in the first place. If a business model already in place is working, there's no need to change it. Sadly, their time is over and I won't be going back. While I don't expect the loss of business from one lifelong customer to hurt them, it's still not good optics for a local business. R.I.P. Bart's. read more

Wow. Connecticut keeps having so many good hot dogs. After searching it out twice (closed the first time, forgot where it was or what it was called the second) I finally ate a Bart's chili dog recently. I was so glad I bothered to spend all that time finding it. The bun, a New England roll, was toasted nicely. The chili was actually spicy, and not at all watery in my encounter. And the dog itself -- so often the part shamefully hidden by knowing purveyors of mediocre wursts -- was tangy, grilled well on the outside, and nice and long to boot. It was the standout of a standout assembly, as it should be. The kids on duty were good kids and as helpful as you would be on your summer job. I wasn't sure where I was supposed to eat the night I was there, since there didn't appear to be a table or counter to lean over. But the parking was ample and the experience worth hunting out. In a state where people work hard on their hot dogs, Bart's stands really close to the front of a deliciously crowded pack. read more

Stopped in for an order of home fries in the morning to satisfy my carb crave which I have done many times before. I guess it's been a while since I was last there because they no longer served fresh red potatoes grilled with the skins, seasoned and a bit of onions ,,,,,rather, they now serve canned potatoes .... what restaurant serves canned potatoes??? Real potatoes are cheap enough, no? But, worse then the canned potatoes was the amount of cooking oil they came with. By the time I got the bag to the car, about five steps, the bottom of the bag was soaked. And, upon further inspection of the paper container they came in, the potatoes were swimming in a pool of cooking oil. If you are going to serve food, even if it's road side stand food (which can be awesome) and charge money for it, then serve quality food made from quality ingreedients and do it right. If you can't be bothered and your not up to the challenge, then find something else to sell at with your road side stand, like potatoes for someone else to cook. read more

The food and service was horrible, except for the new girl at the register who was efficient and pleasant. Two had the fish which tasted too fishy and they were sick through the night. The ketchup came pre-served in tiny paper cups.The color was dark. When we tried to dip fries, we couldn't break through the congealed surface. Then we were given packets. I just read another review about how the staff took apart a fish sandwich that they made in error, and reused all the food! The reviewer witnessed as the lettuce, the fish and the bun were put back in the containers! Someone saw them scrape relish back in a container, off a hot dog! Now I believe the premade ketchup cups may have come back on a returned tray? Gross! There was something that looked like slightly pink cool whip, which must have been their attempt at coleslaw. It was pure mayonnaise with a few flecks of purple cabbage, no exaggeration. Avoid this place like the plague, which they could certainly pass around, reusing food. What a nightmare. read more

The restaurant while cleanish, has some elements that are quite dirty and make me question overall hygiene, or 2 cloth arm chairs that look disgusting. Bart's is the local burger/hot dog joint that has been a Windsor staple for years. The place is even owned by the Mayor, which makes it even more of a Windsor institution. The hot dogs and burgers are good; nothing spectacular, but one of the better lunches in town. The onion rings and curly fries are good, but I've had experience where the standard french fries have been a little soggy. Tip: if you want your hot dog sliced in the middle with a melted slice of cheese, order an "Old Fashioned." If you want your hot dog with the cheese sauce, order the cheese dog. read more

We've been to Bart's a few times and the food's good, but the ice cream desserts are the best! Get yourself a milkshake and I promise you, you won't be disappointed! There's a much nicer seating area outside than inside. The picnic tables overlook the river, a lovely arched railroad bridge, a nearby boat launch/fishing area and a well kept walkway/trail that starts just across the street. If you're lucky, you may see a passing freight/passenger train while you're eating or be entertained by the many walkers who stop by with their (always friendly) dogs at the nearby trail's end. The Beanery, which is separated from Bart's by just a screen door, has a nice selection of pastries and breakfast baked goods, not to mention some very good coffee. As it is a coffee joint, it does close much earlier than Bart's, so arrive early for the best selection, but you really can't go wrong with any of their baked selections. Ambience is lacking in their shared dining room, so enjoy your purchases outside if you can. read more

Total Dump. Had lunch there last week. Place is dirty, with many flies. Cook and assistant did not use gloves or wash hands when cooking my lunch. Cook and assistant asked me 3 times what I wanted. I told then each 3 times ( 6 times total) my order which was a cheeseburger and milkshake. Employees seemed more interested in sharing stories then customer service. The owner's were there and observed this and did the same. Owners were more interested in joking with employees, then providing customer service, cleaning or managing. Small enough that someone could have swallowed / choked on it. I tried to find someone to notify. Bart's has been around forever, and has gone through a few ownership changes as well, but the food continues to be great, and the atmosphere is perfect for enjoying an excellent hot dog. The kids behind the counter are hardworking and do a very good job of moving things along when it gets crowded, and the wait time is never too bad, even when the line is out the door. Passing thru today's stopped for lunch and were so disappointed ! Service was very slow, no longer having multiple orders on at the same time, everything single threaded. I had to wait until everyone else was checked out just to place my order. That took time and the fries and onion rings were ready before the other food and getting cold waiting. The chili on the dog was nothing like I remembered and could have come out of any can. It's been a while since I've been to Bart's so I stopped by on a sunny Sunday afternoon for a hot dog, hamburger and milk shake. Ordered a Bacon Cheeseburger. No flavor what so ever. Chilii cheese dog was mediocre. Not sure what kind of hot dogs they served but it could have used more snap. The chili was the watery variety. Coffee shake was average at best. Nothing spectacular here....but its a legendary sort of spot..its been around forever....and I guess that should mean something. Wish the food was better....hot dogs can't compare with capital lunch,doogie's or eddie's delicious dogs. I like a chili sauce thats meaty...Barts is of the more liquid tomato variety. cheeseburgers are small and OK....but nothing you'd run back for. french fries were better than average....crispy and served hot..but needed some salt. I have been to chicago and tried the best hot dogs that they have (hot doug's). and have to say that Bart's truly is the best. my husband and I went to the Bean side of Bart's . Husband Grew up in Windsor and our 1st date lunch was at Bart's 47 years ago. Thought we should try the Beanery side today. Oh so bad. Poor lady was all by herself so service was bad. She's sweet but needs help. My Thanksgiving wrap was so bad 1 slice of turkey , gummy stuffing and cheep tasteless cranberry jelly left a bad taste in my mouth. We did not get our smoothies till we were finished and had to go back up and ask for them. She was so busy she forgot and forgot to make one of our sandwiches. Never again. read more
