My mission is to relive food memories... you know, the ones that are INDEED memorable. Ever since my last Taiwan trip ten years ago, I have sought places to recreate the foods that I enjoyed there. The best source is Southern California, but my current work life situation hasn't allowed me to visit in over nine years and, even then, it was for work with only three to four days there. When things changed in 2020, I was fortunate to come across a small batch supplier in the South Bay who offered pick-ups/deliveries to the City every few weeks but he ceased to offer this when things opened up. The dish... beef noodle soup, a popular Taiwan dish that is so popular that there are competitions in judging who is the "best", very subjective I would imagine. During a random reference to this business on Yelp, I saw one reviewer mention the 'best' description for their beef noodle soup so coming here became a must for me. Not wanting to judge this business on just one menu item, I originally planned to dine here but pivoted to ordering a number of things to bring home. I phoned my order in about an hour before my desired pick up time and learned that some appetizers were discontinued while an item was sold out. Due to traffic coming from downtown, I was almost fifteen minutes late after finding a metered parking space across the street on a Friday late afternoon. When I got home, I started on the green onion pancake (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=3ac5XnyaZcdsm-A2lOuJtw); this was precut into pie-like slices which made them easy to eat. The flavors were there though on the subtle side. My friend would likely complain that there aren't enough onions for her but I thought it was okay. The next item I tried was a recommended one by the lady on the phone (presume owner), the rolled pancake w/ sliced beef (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=pSSeILiX7awWEGDavd1vTg); after rattling off several items that I wanted, she suggested that I get this. Kudos to her as I surprisingly enjoyed this immensely. It was clean tasting and all of the ingredients meshed well texture and flavor wise. The best thing is that neither this nor the onion pancake felt the least bit greasy as all. for my main event, I apportioned half of the braised beef noodle soup, packed well for takeout (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=05HIHjdKH_Dcs1O26diYRQ) for my dinner; it is certainly more impressive after reconstructing (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=0WlttfiUZMy9xI-1p_Z_og). This is my current favorite of the ones that I've recently tried as the broth and the tender beef pieces (six in my order) were the stars. The soup is addicting with just the right amount of beef, herbs, and spices flavoring with the beef tender to the point that you almost don't need to chew. The pieces are not the least bit fatty. My only criticism is for the noodles that reminded me of spaghetti noodles. I will get this again. The last two items were originally purchased for a friend who declined them. The 1st was the marinated peanuts mixed w/ cucumber (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=rJpmOvSIwfg1drkBSkdJvA); this is a mild appetizer as the marinade is mainly sesame oil and garlic. The other was the chives pancake (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=aK2bZzrkAUbDbuQMTQx6qA), two pancakes cut into four pieces. The flavors were good and, like the other two pancakes that I tried, the outer skin was not the least bit oily. I am glad that I chose to get takeout instead of dining in as there are only four tables for four and the layout seems more geared for takeout and buying premade dumplings and buns (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=qK9AW1sLGmlmvck0uUq2IA). The auntie who took my order, accepted my payment, and gave me my food was very friendly. The auntie was concerned that I forgot to come and called me due to my tardiness to make sure that I was coming. I will return soon to try more items and likely earlier in the day to make sure things aren't sold out or venture out on a weekend to get items only available then.

Quality/Quantity - Got here for dinner. Only 5 tables, but still got seated right away. Then the owners recognized our guests who are regulars here. Actually, I am starting to feel like our guests are regulars in EVERY restaurant in SF?!?! Finally found people that eat out more than I do! Simple menu done well. Today's orders: Braised Beef Noodle Soup - LOL, if you are following my lunch guest also ordered this at a different restaurant. See Chef Xiong Kitchen's Yelp review. This was just as good, well almost as good, as lunch. Chicken Dumpling with Corn - Two orders, well one of which was really to-go. I say the highlight of the dishes. Done well; meaty, perfect dough consistency, held up well in the cooking process, etc. And of course, with good flavors. Cold Assorted Vegetarian Delicacies - Custom veggies, as they were out of the regular dish. So they made this for us; see picture. Marinated Beef Shank - Our guest's favorite. Last time I had this here, it was amazing and today, it was still good, but not amazing. I guess each batch can be slightly different depending on the marinating process and chef. Rolled Pancake with Sliced Beef - Again, I had pancakes for lunch, lol. See other review. But this one was slightly different with the sliced beef. My second favorite dish here today. Got hot water instead of tea - As our guest did not want to get caffeinated before sleeping. Ambiance - Very small local restaurant. Simple clean educational decor, well if you can read Chinese. Metered street parking, free after 6pm, so free for us as today was a late dinner. Freezer to-go frozen dumplings. Might get some next time. Clean unisex restroom. Open 7 days a week; see my picture for specific hours. Service - Good, and even better when they recognized our guests as regular customers. Paper and QR code menus available. Price - $80 + tip. Owner Comment - Congrats on all your success since 2016. Because our guests are regular customers, that makes us regular customers, lol.

Small family style place. The dishes and teapots etc have seen better days but food is good. Beef roll is very meaty, good flavor. The pancake itself is pretty dense though Wonton soup is nice and light. Wontons are full of juicy shrimp Soft tofu - love that they have this on the menu. It's good but slightly salty, the tofu was also cold on the bottom

The soup was very flavorful! I think the portion size of the Beef Noodle Soup is just enough to be full, and invites room for dumplings and other appetizers on the side. I think it could even be a good idea to share the bowl, then get other sides. (That's what the table next to us did.) Make sure to use the little bowls they give you to scoop smaller portions of soup and noodles into because otherwise, you might burn your tongue! They gave a decent amount of meat (yay). The dumplings were lovely and they were delightful to eat with the spicy soup Well-decorated little shop in a less-busy part of Sunset. Not very busy on a weekend early dinner -- it was such a great experience, and I'd definitely go again!

For $12 plus tax, I got a beef roll - roast beef with cucumber and cilantro in a sauce slathered homemade round flatbread...It's delicious! Small no frills place with regulars that clearly like their authentic northern Chinese comfort food. Only a couple of people work here, so patience is needed.

This cute lil sleeper is a definite must experience. We were on our way to another place but somehow we felt drawn in here. No regrets. We ordered Shanghai Dumplings, spicy beef noodle soup, and cucumber dish. My goodness what an unexpected surprise The staff were kind, helpful and fun! The place was packed at lunch. That and the aroma had us hooked. We had lots of leftovers too.

Love that the food here is so consistent! The soup is always delicious and full of beef and yummy noodles. The cucumbers are crunchy and well seasoned. And the beef roll is delicious with a yummy pancake. Service is easy with the ability to order online and a hot pot of tea ready for you when you sit down. This neighborhood gem makes it feel like you are sitting down with the family as they eat their meal together. I'm always happy, full, and satisfied when I leave!

It was a raining day and what better way to find a get some good soup! I decided to try this place out. They are known for their beef noodle soup! The beef noodle soup was delicious! The beef was so soft and tender, fall off the bone goodness! The noodles were made perfectly and had the perfect texture! The dumplings were just ok for me. I would definitely come back just for the beef noodle soup! This is a small shop that is family owned and has about 5 tables. If you are ever in San Francisco in the sunset area next to Golden Gate Park come check this out on Irving Street! This place is very affordable as well.

I've been craving a beef noodle soup, but the two previous ones I tried in Chinatown downtown disappointed me. Luckily, the one here pulled through! It took 10-15 min to come out after ordering via a QR code on the table. No one else was there, but I'm very glad I gave it a shot. Flavorful soup, a good amount of tender meat, perfectly cooked noodles - It reminded me of my grandpa's beef noodle soup. At only $13, it's a steal. I'll definitely be back!

small restaurant, owners are chinese and talking to them in chinese did help. they literally turned all their tables into a mega table in order to seat my party of 10 at 9pm on a tuesday night. the food was fast and delicious and i love the rolled pancake with sliced beef (a must try!) would recommend: rolled pancake with sliced beef: best, must try, we ended up ordering two of these pork dumpling with green chives: solid dumplings. you know they're gonna be good when behind you there's just a freezer full of dumplings in plastic bags pork won ton with shrimp: the soup was very yummy too with the seaweed boiled marinated peanuts mixed with cucumber: boiled peanuts not my favorite but smashed cucumber is good not as stand out: green onion pancake: pretty typical, nothing special and it was not as crispy as i would have wanted and it's pretty flat

Would give this place 6 stars if possible. Lived in the area and had nothing but a wonderful experience every time we dined here. Delicious food, great people, highly recommend. Really felt like someone just made a home cooked meal for you. Can't say enough good things. Give it a try!! Recommended items: Beef Roll and Braised Beef Noodle Soup

Bei Fang Style is my favorite restaurant in the neighborhood. Authentic dishes, amazing dumplings (my favorite one is the chicken & corn dumpling), & the best beef noodle soup (better than the one at Yuan Bao Jiao Zi in my opinion..). Love taking friends here or solo dining. Also, the owners are the best. :)

Ask the Community - Bei Fang Style

Is device ordering the only way to place an order?

Nope the owner takes your order manually if you ask. You can grab a menu from the front and then call her over. She doesn't speak the best english and is always a little rushed! (just a heads up)

Do they have a shrimp, chives & egg dumplings or every boiled dumplings has pork? I don't eat pork that's why I'm asking.

I just went last week and tried their shrimp/chive/egg dumplings and there's no pork in it. It's the same filling as in the chive pancakes. Really tasty!

    Is it still cash only?

No, we know except card however there is a 4% service fee

    How many dumplings per order?

That depends on how you want them to be cooked.

This most recent time my girlfriend was craving ramen but I wasn't so I got creative. I love their black pepper chicken, so I got that and asked for a side of rice. On top of that we got the ribeye skewers and their new snow crab hand roll. The sauce for the black pepper chicken was really really tasty. That sauce over the rice, was so comforting. The ribeye wasn't super tender but tasty. The snow crab hand roll came with so much snow crab, I felt like it's one of the few hand rolls I've had that was filling. If you come for happy hour, they have good deals on ramen. I think like $13ish, which is a great deal. It ends promptly at 5:30, so plan to get there well before 5:30 if you are looking to take advantage. Something to think about it, Theres no sign up list for waiting for tables, and everyone who's waiting just lines up outside and down the block (no waiting inside). While the ramen (especially their Niku ramen) is still a solid choice. Piecing together meal with some appetizers and a side of rice might be my go-to way of ordering here now. Taniku really does do a lot of things well and the food is always tasty.

We started off with the Mekyabetsu (Brussels sprouts), Ba-Ra (pork belly), and Kobe (beef). The Brussels sprouts were my fav starter, and the sauce paired so well with it. The Ba-Ra was pretty good, but nothing amazing, and same for the Kobe, which I found to be a bit bland. We also split the Hokkaido Miso ramen. The broth had a great flavor, and the pork chashu was possibly the best I've ever had(!) as it was soooo tender and flavorful, and not very fatty. I did think the cauliflower left room to be desired, and kinda took away from the ramen overall. We finished our meal off with the matcha Panna cotta - this was a great dessert and wasn't too sweet ;) This place definitely seems to be pretty good at a lot of dishes, but not amazing at any single one. The vibe is great, service was great, and prices are a biiiiti steep but not unreasonable.
