Bei Fang Style (Literally Northern Style) delivered a delicious, homey, starchy meal on a chilly SF day. I dropped by with a friend and immediately loved the unassuming interior. They sell their dumplings frozen by the pack, in case you can't get enough of them in one sitting. Service was polite and quick. We ordered the beef noodle soup and pork and cabbage dumplings. An underrated detail I love about Chinese restaurants is you don't need to request extra plates for sharing, it's often assumed that you will be dining family style. Our food came out hot and fresh and we dug in immediately. The dumplings had a chewy, slightly too thick wrapper. The filling inside was soft and flavorful, packed with pork, and made even more delicious dipped into a mix of Chinese black vinegar, soy sauce, and chili oil from the bottles at each table, whatever ratio of the three floats your boat. The beef noodle soup was also quite solid, though it relied a bit more on spices and less on depth of beefy flavor for my tastes. The cilantro is mandatory. The bowl had a good portion of meat, though the beef was a bit chewier than I expected. The noodles were perfectly QQ and carried the soup well. Again, a big dollop of chili oil made each bite even more delicious! There is a surcharge for cc use, so be sure to bring cash! Prices are fair and overall, this is a solid spot for northern Chinese cuisine. My mission is to relive food memories... you know, the ones that are INDEED memorable. Ever since my last Taiwan trip ten years ago, I have sought places to recreate the foods that I enjoyed there. The best source is Southern California, but my current work life situation hasn't allowed me to visit in over nine years and, even then, it was for work with only three to four days there. When things changed in 2020, I was fortunate to come across a small batch supplier in the South Bay who offered pick-ups/deliveries to the City every few weeks but he ceased to offer this when things opened up. The dish... beef noodle soup, a popular Taiwan dish that is so popular that there are competitions in judging who is the "best", very subjective I would imagine. During a random reference to this business on Yelp, I saw one reviewer mention the 'best' description for their beef noodle soup so coming here became a must for me. Not wanting to judge this business on just one menu item, I originally planned to dine here but pivoted to ordering a number of things to bring home. I phoned my order in about an hour before my desired pick up time and learned that some appetizers were discontinued while an item was sold out. Due to traffic coming from downtown, I was almost fifteen minutes late after finding a metered parking space across the street on a Friday late afternoon. The soup was very flavorful! I think the portion size of the Beef Noodle Soup is just enough to be full, and invites room for dumplings and other appetizers on the side. I think it could even be a good idea to share the bowl, then get other sides. (That's what the table next to us did.) Make sure to use the little bowls they give you to scoop smaller portions of soup and noodles into because otherwise, you might burn your tongue! They gave a decent amount of meat (yay). Sit down business still hasn't quite picked up again at Bei Fang Style, but the lady who runs is still hustling to churn out some good Bei Fang (an area of Beijing) goodies. My favorites are still the small bites - I really enjoy the pan fried pork buns which are a good size, fluffy, with a juicy pork patty inside and the pot stickers which she only pan fries one side so you still get that soft supple dumpling exterior with the golden crispy bottom. I've also tried the marinated cold dishes with the spicy beef tendon being my favorite. Today we did try something new which was the grilled cold noodle. It was neither cold nor a noodle dish, at least not the presentation you expect! It looked like a sheet of cold noodle that was wrapped around a savory spicy sauce and cilantro like a crepe that was then dipped in egg and fried up. It was interesting! The pan fried pork buns were from my dreams, the bun was sooo fluffy and pork inside was flavorful and juicy! I liked that the buns weren't overly oily and were actually lightly fried on the bottoms. I loved the beef noodle soup as well. Despite how red it looked it was not spicy at all, which was great!
