We ordered a Pepper-Salt Chicken (#5) and a House Special Chicken Spicy (#10) and both came with a scoop of white rice and brown rice. Very generous serving, seasoned well, and delicious overall. The pepper-salt chicken was wok fried on the spot but was a bit dry. However, the flavor was wonderful! The House special was a coated chicken in a slightly sweet and spicy sauce with carrots, onions, bell peppers, and mushroom. Amazing flavor again and quite an intense kick. Ambience: n/a - food truck that looks clean and neat but the surrounding area didn't feel the best. There were a few police that showed up on either side to speak with the people spread around the sidewalks. Service: 5/5 - attentive and quick to service. Friendly food cart with delicious food! The Mongolian beef and lo mein are a must-try! The Mongolian beef was tender and smothered in sautéed onions, served with steamed rice. The Lo mein was perfect for sharing! Order with your favorite protein. I'd recommend each person ordering their own plate, aside from the fried rice and Lo mein. The food was super fresh and made to order so depending on what you order, it can take between 5-15 minutes. The food cart is run by a husband and wife duo that have been in business for years. They used to run a restaurant in a building that was eventually torn down just down the street so they shifted to a food cart. The portions are gigantic. I ordered 2 dishes each time I went to split between 3 adults and we consistently did not finish the food each night because of the large portion. The thing I appreciated was that the food was not overly oily or salty. It was well spiced but not crazy. The price is super affordable and tipping is optional. They have a jar you can put tips into. there is a large selection of dishes to pick from. I've ordered the sautéed green beans with chicken, seafood fried rice, and dry fried rice stick. When I got ther3, it was a little sketchy because it was a food cart, but was not let down. There is just 1 man making everything, he was SUPER sweet and kind. I ordered the chicken lo mein cause I wasn't that hungry to try any other dishes. It was such a huge amount of food for the price. I could have fed like, 3 people with that!! The portion was HUGE. I really try not to give five stars out easily, but, Beijing House makes it challenging to give anything less than six! If only I could go higher. The experience at Beijing House is deeply personal. The staff are the most energetic I've come across from Portland carts, and their open space around the cart really does invite interest, since they have this corner of the Cart Blocks to themselves. Ordering is very easy, and the team will walk you through the steps to get the right meat, rice, and sizes for you. Once ordered, you can expect a wait of between five and fifteen minutes, depending on the line in front of you. They do a great job at remembering who you are, so they do not take numbers or give out vibrating order status alerts. It's a very cozy experience! Since most people will order takeaway, I recommend bringing a separate bag to hold your meal(s) in, since the thin container can get quite warm when holding it for several minutes. This speaks to how fresh their food is! There are also small tables in the Cart Blocks park where you can eat. read more

I was walking the food carts yesterday and saw that this place offered crispy eggplant. It's my favorite Chinese food dish but I'm rarely satisfied when I order it elsewhere. I gave it a go, and omg! The taste buds come alive (or incinerate upon the first few bites), and the endorphin rush that follows ensure that moment is embedded in your brain for a significant time. When Run mentioned I could get just about any dish on the menu as spicy as I wanted, I flashed a happy, yet sinister look that my stomach could only interpret as: "Oh f***...." What to get? There are almost 30 menu items! Some are mere appetizers or sweet items, yet each look so tasty. This time, I wanted chicken. Kung Pao Chicken for $6.50. As an aside, you have a choice of white rice or brown rice (no extra charge to get brown rice). My food was cooked to order, and in a few minutes, a dark-red sea of chicken, peanuts, and dried red chiles (Thai chiles, perhaps?) awaited me. On my visit, a guy (likely there to fix or install some equipment in the cart) commented how spicy the dish looked and smelled. Admittedly, he said he can't tolerate spice. I took a good whiff of the chicken. Mmm...spice. (goes into trance) The diced chicken stayed moist. The dark red glaze coated each piece, delivering a satisfying, flavorful nudge to the palate. Even though it was requested extra spicy, eating the dried chiles would have been the only way to likely set my mouth ablaze. I gave my palate another shot at life by not eating those dried pods of doom. The peanuts gave that cool texture contrast, although I'm thinking to myself...that's a boatload of peanuts. Whatever, it's protein! It's a respectable start for Beijing House. I wasn't completely blown away by the product, but it certainly warrants a return trip. Budget priced Chinese food downtown? I'm all for that. I was a little skeptical at first since this was the only food cart to not have a line during the lunch rush, but I was pleasantly surprised. The two owners were friendly and greeted me with a smile. I opted for the General Tso's chicken, and it was quite good! For $8, it gets you two scoops of rice (one with white rice, and the other that's fried rice). The chicken itself was cut into smaller pieces but were marinated in the sweet sauce and had minced pan fried garlic sprinkled on top. Delicious! The interesting part was that the chicken was on a bed of shredded iceberg lettuce, but it worked well since the sauce was soaked up by it. It's a battered, deep fried fish with sauteed green and white onions. Comes with two scoops of rice and it's alot of food. This could be the best salt and pepper fish in town. I originally wanted fish and chips, but the only cart that sold them was already closed, so I ended up getting some Chinese from this cart. They have a decent selection of dishes, and I really liked that they had a lot of pescetarian/vegetarian options. I got the eggplant with spicy garlic sauce. I got the eggplant crispy (you can also get it soft.) It was good, but the sauce wasn't spicy enough. The portions were huge (I ended up getting three meals from that), so for $6.50, the price was right. The service was fast and the owner was really nice. Yeah, it wasn't the best Chinese I've ever had, but it was still pretty good. If I'm in the area and craving Chinese, I'll definitely go back and try their other dishes. read more

The lady and her daughter who worked there were very friendly. Of course I ordered the sesame chicken. $7 All the meals with chicken/beef are $7 and all the meals with fish/shellfish are $8, which is extremely cheap and they have a huge selection! Service was super fast and the lady handed me my steaming hot sesame chicken. I couldn't wait to go find a bench to enjoy it. Big portions! 2 big scoops of rice and lots of chicken. The chicken sauce was super flavorful and had a hint of spice to it. The only downside was the chicken was a little bit over fried so some of the pieces were a little hard to chew. I can't judge if Beijing House is authentic. There are many, many regional cuisines in China and I've only experienced the South. But I must say, Beijing House is tasty! It is an example of many dishes coming from one (small) kitchen. The number of family kitchens in Chinese homes with a 16 burner Viking, double convection wall oven microwave steamers, a garage full of plug in countertop mixers, slicers, dicers, macerators, cookers, roasters, brazers, deep friers and other electric food gadgets is microscopically small. Most homes for generations have made 3 and 4 dish meals, plus accompanying rice, on a two burner, often bottled gas, stove, with sharp knives, and, in the last, say, 30 years, a rice cooker. Somehow all those dishes come out all at once, perfectly cooked and steaming. Memory of famine in China is rooted in the culture, if not the direct experience of a majority. It was a serious problem in the Cultural Revolution which ended about 35 years ago. The family bond is still paramount in Chinese culture. The cultural resonance and importance of a well prepared meal with family, at home, or out, for dim sum, is unlikely to ever be understood in America. Chinese restaurants in America have translated that home kitchen efficiency to the sit down realm, and Beijing House has brought it Portland up to date, in a food cart. This compact stainless steel wonder cools and compartmentalizes all the ingredients for the more than 20 dishes. The cooking is precise, not overdone on the vegies. The result arrives with your choice of brown or white rice, and I believe they have an option of the dish over lettuce sans rice. I had the special chicken with carrots, mushrooms and onions in a fruity brown bean sauce. Beijing House occupies the middle ground between some cornstarch-heavy restaurants and very light nouvelle cuisine Chinese fusion spa fodder. And the price is right, $6.50. If you want the type dishes you would find in an American Chinese restaurant, lighter, and inexpensively, from a downtown lunchtime food cart, Beijing House is the place! read more

It's alright. Among many food carts on this block, I craved for Chinese food. Not many carts serve Chinese food, most of them are Thai, Mexican, Vietnamese, South American, and American. It was a tossed between The Noodle House (I had their food all the time) or Beijing House. I settled for Beijing House because I saw Eggplant with Garlic Sauce on their menu. I ordered the Eggplant spicy, but it wasn't spicy at all. It had great flavors except the spicy flavor that I requested. Jesse had the Seafood Fried Rice and it was pretty delicious. If I told my past self that I would spend one evening chatting with the owner of Beijing House food stand for about an hour, keeping him from going home, I probably would have laughed. If I told my past self that I pretty much conversed with him in Mandarin with my one of my friends, I would have slapped myself silly. But that's exactly what happened at Beijing House. Like a lot of the other food stands in Portland, Beijing House offers VERY cheap average quality food. It's pretty much your standard takeout Chinese food that's high in sodium and oil. And like all the other stands, this one closes pretty earlier (about 9pm I'd say?). And so when we got to Beijing House and it was clear that the Chinese owner was about to pack up and go, we pretty much begged him to make us whatever he had left. The kicker? We did it in Mandarin and I believe we convinced him real good to serve us the last meal of the night. And so for about an hour we just talked and talked while he slowly cooked us our Beijing Beef orders. Funny thing was that we actually bargained with him Chinese style and got us a whole bunch of vegetables on our plates (usually there isn't any vegetables that come with our order) for just a $1 extra. That is haggling at its finest and that alone was one of my highlights of the night. If you are Chinese and can speak Mandarin, I highly encourage you to engage in convo with this guy. He is funny and has great intent. The food was what you would expect. As mentioned, it was a bit oily and salty. As far as I'm concerned, Beijing House serves the best Chinese food in downtown PDX. There just might be another hole-in-the-wall or food cart that does it better, but I haven't found it yet. They have a huge menu, and everything is prepared fresh to order. Sometimes that makes it a bit of a wait to get your food. Well, wear a coat. It's worth it. They use fresh, quality ingredients to produce dozens of dishes with flavors that are deep and vibrant. Just try the General Tso's chicken-- it's a far cry from the usual double-breaded deep-fried and slathered in sticky sauce that you might usually get. The flavor is pungent and complex, rather than simply hot and sweet, and it is completely delicious. If only I could find a brick-and-mortar Chinese restaurant this good. read more

Beijing House provides pretty good Chinese food served by a real Chinese guy who plays traditional Chinese music in his cart, and makes things to order. So in that sense it's "authentic." When you see him open up the freezer and open up the bag of frozen potstickers you definitely lose some of that "authentic" feel. In any event, the potstickers are pretty decent and served with a nice vinegary suace. The General Tso's chicken isn't bad, but was a bit bland and the serving size was relatively small when compared to what you'd get at other Chinese places at the same price point ($8). Beijing House is open later than a lot of the other carts so if you need to pick something up for dinner you might consider it, but I wouldn't put it anywhere near the top of my list. read more

Very friendly food cart next to many other food carts. I was really in the mood for chinese food and I've heard that Portland doesn't have any good ones. Well I must have heard wrong then, because this food cart was a really solid joint. Menu is not as large as the ones in NY, but for a food court, not bad. Lots of tasty choices. I ordered the sesame beef with fried rice, and it was so good, I had it twice in one week. It was also a very plentiful portion as well, which is always nice. Very fresh food.
