Sawasdee was a food cart in Slab Town and now it's an actual restaurant with seating indoors. Good for them! They serve decent Thai food and have a good following so I hope they are successful with their expanded and upleveled space! Tried the Pad Kee Mao and it was tasty, just wish there was more veggies in with the stir fried wide rice noodles and chicken. The yellow curry was very flavorful and the chicken very tender. Lots of curry sauce which got soaked up by the jasmine rice. I'd definitely get again. Service is friendly and efficient, everything made fresh to order. Parking is on the street so depending on the time of day, you may have to walk a bit. I was there to pick up a late lunch and no problem finding parking. read more

One of my family's favourite Thai spots. Great food, great service, great staff. They've upgraded from their food truck to a indoor space (and there's now bubble tea next door in the building). This place is a food cart to the site of a non-functional restaurant. It offers all the major staples + a few specials. Standard menu. Prices are roughly $12 for dishes with chicken or tofu and $14+ for dishes with beef/shrimp/pork. These prices are up there with full sit down restaurants. Portions are good sized, food is standard. By far the most authentic THAI restaurant in Portland. I stumbled across the original food cart 8 year's ago in downtown, Portland and glad that they are still open after the pandemic. I came here on a business trip and dine-in with my family today. Everything was superb, authentic and freshly made to order. Today we ordered the crab rangoon, chili paste fried rice and pad sew eww (stir fried flat noodles) with shrimp. Our experience felt like a nice homemade authentic Thai cooking. This meal is our stop over from Portland to Roseville, CA and the food surprised us! We ordered the crab fried rice, satay chicken and the tom kha soup and they are all so flavorful and not too oily like most of the Thai restaurants We've tried here all over USA. The service is ok, I think this is a mom and pop resto and it takes a little time for our order to arrive as what the other reviews for this place have said. However this is definitely worth the wait in my opinion. This meal is a treat for us! Great portions for a low price. Good customer service and seating area. I had to parked down the street and walked to the area but it was still decent for the price. Fast outcome and little waiting time. I'd ordered pad thai and pad kee mao (drunken noodles) and it was delicious. I'd chosen protein: shrimp and they we're generous in the quantity as well as the quality. The shrimps were really big and I believe I received 5-7 each bowl. I feel it lacked veggies for both but it was still delicious. Wasn't too salty or spicy for the regular as I asked for a side of chili pepper. What's the point of ordering ahead of time if you get there and the food is not ready. First time ordering here and will also be my last time. This is very disappointing. If I ordered ahead it means I don't want to wait there. Also the guy took the onions with his hands and put them in one of the orders. That's just not correct. This was a nice solid plate. For $7, I got the house special - basically a red curry with chicken, green peppers, bamboo shoots in a coconut sauce base. While my first bite of chicken seemed to be a bit chewy, the balance of the plate was very satisfactory. I asked for spicy and I enjoyed the hot that was served. Had this delivered by a delivery service. That was fine, but the food itself was absolutely horrible. I got the pad kee mao, or at least that was what it was supposed to be. I've had Thai food at dozens of restaurants, but never anything this bad. The noodles were dry, no sauce at all. No onions, no basil, and no flavor. I ended up throwing it away. Pad Thai is priced decently although the chicken was a bit chewy in an over cooked way. Nothing wrong with the meal but there's so many options in the area that I probably won't "crave" this place anytime soon. I have been around PDX for three years now. That in itself is crazy. But I have also gotten to eat some incredible food, especially all of the Asian cuisine that is so amazing in this town. Now down here at the food carts on 9th, I have eaten at around 13 or 14 of the carts, I'm not sure anymore of the number, but I still have a long way to go. On a Saturday, the carts tend to get busy. The Hawaiian place with a line, the German place, a Korean cart doing well. I wanted to try a different cart, and you can never go wrong with Thai, but no one was at this spot? My standards are always either Tom Kha or Pad See Ew and I decided to go with the latter and a Thai iced tea. I was asked if I'd like it spicy? Of course! And he did deliver on the spicy. For the most part, this was your standard chicken pad see ew. The broad noodles, the light and sweet soy sauce, green veggies including broccoli, and the addition of carrots (which could have been cooked a little more, they were a bit on the raw side) and then there was the spice kick. Some places I've been to, will basically just throw some red pepper flake into a dish and call it Thai hot or extra spicy. The problem with that is that it doesn't get cooked into the food or the sauce and it's just a bad taste to a meal. Here at Sawasdee, it was cooked into everything and the heat was beautiful, that is if you are one that can take that sort of heat. I thoroughly enjoyed this dish and will gladly grace this cart again in the future. The Thai iced tea? Can anyone make this bad? No. And it was good here as well. Just because there isn't a huge line doesn't mean the food isn't on par, it just means that it's still not known to everyone yet. Good food, good drink and I will be back. Enjoy. read more

Since I'm straight from the streets, I'm in my element when eating from food carts. Portland has it's fair share of options---so many to choose. After letting my nose peruse many a food cart, my mind grapes caught notice of the handwritten specials of Sawasdee's: Pumpkin Curry. It was the day of the Pumpkin, I like Thai, and I wanted to try a Portland food cart: It was on. I ordered the Pumpkin Curry with chicken (tofu was also an option). I chose to wash it down with a tall can of a coconut drink. After ordering I checked out the downtown scene for a minute or so, and then my meal was up (Yes, it was that fast). Lawdy, lawdy. My curry in a box looked off the chain. The cart next door was closed, but offered a surface for me to dine on. I said a blessing to the Great Pumpkin and dug in. Damn. Every once in a while one has a meal which tatoo's itself within your memory as something special. Pumpkin Curry was one of those meals. I love all types of curries (yellow, red, green), but I now have to add Pumpkin Curry to my the top of my list. I ate just about everything; I was stuffed. Ordered the pad kee Mao and the Thai iced tea. Thai iced tea was overly sweet so I recommend asking for less sugar if possible. The pad kee Mao was SO SPICY I couldn't eat it. We LOVE this place, thank you Yelpers! We were beyond happy when we found Sawasdee - we were ecstatic when we realized this parking lot was full of little food stands like this! We had to check out every spot to see what else were offered but we ended up at Sawasdee. Boy, I can cry just thinking about this place. You folks there are just so freaking lucky - why can't we have places like this in the Bay Area?!? With about 10-15 other food stands around, this place is still the busiest. Why? Because it's fresh, tasty, large portion and ONLY $5! Can you believe this? $5 for authentic Thai? Just unreal, unheard of... The lady behind the register is very nice. You have a choice of how spicy you want your food - hot is pretty good. We loved their curries - green is our favorite but the red was tasty too. Love all the bamboo shoots, the basil...the eggroll that comes with it is tasty too. The sauce is so yummy...I wish we had endless steamed rice. Good quality Thai food. We stopped here for lunch. The number of food trucks at this corner was astonishing. After chatting with some locals I chose Sawasdee to try. I ordered the traditional Thai Pad Chicken and Thai Iced Tea. I was pleased and satisfied with my meal. It was bountiful and filling. Although there is minimal seating, we managed to luck out and grab a nearby table and enjoyed each one of our choices under a tree. You cannot beat the $6 price for a filling meal..the "fullness effect" actually lasted for a bit over 24 hours (I skipped dinner and breakfast on the following day lol!)...For a small stomach, you could certainly split this into two meals. I ordered the Pumpkin Curry with chicken... I have had a lot of Thai food and I'm definitely a curry fan..but Pumpkin curry was definitely NEW and AWESOME! VERY TASTY! It was a red curry based with squash and bellpeppers. I ordered "spicy" and yeah, It was spicy.. or maybe extremely spicy for those who are not used with the spicy food...and the portion was HUGE!!!! I also love the fact that they used a paper box for the food.. $6 and environmental friendly..sweet! I agree with some yelpers who complained that the rice was kinda mushy..but I had it as soon as it was served ..so it was ok...my only complaint is that.. The last thing I wanted to do before getting on the train to head back to Seattle was to try one of the food stands in Portland. Unfortunately, many of the places were not open due to the Memorial Day holiday. After checking out a number of stands on SW 10th and SW 5th, I settled for Sawasdee. Mostly because there was actually seating space here. Most stands do not have this, so this is one plus going for this spot. Based on the number of Yelp reviews, this appears to be the most reviewed Thai food stand in Portland. Not my reason to visit, but I guess I headed for the stand that was the most popular when I was there. The menu is full of standard Thai classics like curry and pad thai sold at awesome prices. Even saw some dishes that I found to be a bit different that I have not seen in Seattle like mango curry. I wanted rice noodles so I got the pad kee mao with chicken ($6). The wait was about 10 minutes and I expected it to be sort of lengthy due to the small space and popularity of the place. After getting my dish, I took a seat on the wooden bench in the seating area and digged in. The portion size was not huge, but it was sufficient. Flavor was just okay although I liked that they use different color bell peppers in the dish. Orange and yellow peppers are much more interesting in flavor then the predictable green. It was a sufficient meal and I think that this all you can expect from a humble space like this. Given my train ride home, it was actually good thing that the pad kee mao was not heavy. Sawasdee is fine for what it is, though I will stick with going to a full service Thai place if I can. read more

It was a little later in the day, so many of the food stands had closed, but I yelped this particular establishment and decided to give it a try. The man who took my order was really friendly and they accept credit card via square. He told me that my order would be ready in about four minutes! That's so quick! Due to reading through a lot of the reviews that have been given in the past, I felt that giving Sawasdee Thai a try was worth the trip downtown. I know that Food Carts are known to be very popular in Portland and it's easily known why - great quality food at a cheap/reasonable price! You can't beat it! I'm a sucker for Pad-Kee-Mao at any thai restaurant that I saunter into. That's generally the first item that I will try anywhere. If they have a Tom Yum Noodle dish, well that would be my 2nd favorite thing on the menu. I stood out in front of the cart waiting for my food - the smell of the food made me more hungry as the minutes went by. I walked over to Pioneer Square and sat down on the brick steps to eat to my hearts content. The Pad-Kee-Mao with Tofu was PERFECT! The right amount of hotness (I asked for Medium-Spicey), the noodles were del-ish, the broccoli and the carrots had the perfect crunch. 2 Thumbs up for the Pad-Kee-Mao!!
