We ended up at Belair last night after we discovered another one of our favorite Mexican places had been shuttered. I've been here numerous times before and I keep hoping for more, but I generally leave feeling underwhelmed. Tonight, even though the restaurant was slow, it took a bit of time for the hostess to recognize people were waiting to be seated. Our server came and greeted us promptly and gave us adequate time to review the menu. The house margaritas tasted a bit off. My son asked for a frozen NA margarita but it wasn't blended. The guac lacked seasoning and was very one note. Worst of all, an avocado stem wasn't removed properly and ended up in my mouth. Crunchy on that left a bitter taste in my mouth. The highlight for me were the birria tacos. These were the most flavorful thing I had all night. read more

I'd give them no stars if I could. What happened to this place? They've been slowly going downhill in service for years after doing a spectacular job during Covid. Went to Bel Air on a Monday night. There were a bunch of seats available. We sat at the bar. One staff member got us waters and ask if we wanted something. We got chips. After more than a polite amount of waiting we asked who to order from. A different person came and was very attentive. I asked for the chicken bowl but they gave me the shrimp bowl. I didn't say anything because I was debating between the two and hungry. It was pretty good but very mayo saucey. Slightly exceeded expectations. The other two orders were good and what was ordered. I was really excited to try BelAir Cantina. We came on a Friday night and were seated right away. They had a big space and it was kinda empty. We started with chips and salsa and the chips were very fresh. The salsa was good but not very spicy. We got our meal pretty quick so no complaints there. I was kinda disappointed in the tacos the tilapia taco was the most bland taco I think I have ever had. The only reason it even slightly tasted good was because of the avocado salsa. BelAir's food is well known as mid quality. Not terrible, but certainly not amazing. This was to be expected for my last dine-in experience, but unfortunately the service was also mid. I have now had server Melanie twice, and each time she is incredibly slow, inattentive, and sloppy. I wondered several times if she was under the influence or intoxicated. In any case, I do not feel the need to return anytime soon, and I will be asking for ANY other server besides Melanie. read more

To start, we ordered chips & salsa with the most fresh, crunchy tortillas & 3 tasty salsas- brown (smoky), green (limey), & orange that reminded me of Filipino flavors lol. For entrée, we ordered the 3 taco platter- mixture of fried tilapia, carne asada, carnitas, & al pastor tacos on soft corn tortillas with fluffy rice & black beans, but wish only 1 tortilla was used because it dried out. This was restaurant of the week and a bookmark since they opened and today I finally got around to trying them out. The place doesn't look like a Mexican restaurant because it's hipster/funky from the mural on the outside wall and the decor. Service was good because the packers were on and the place was empty. It's multi level with several very different seating arrangements from small table, huge tables. Upper booths, bar area and big window wrap around hi booths. I started with a raspberry margarita which wasn't too sweet, not overpowered by alcohol and a small raspberry flavor. The menu is small with vegan options, meat eater options, drinks etc. I had the 3 taco that's comes with free beans and rice, cleverly worded because it ends up being around what a 3 taco dinner that comes with beans and rice on average is anyway. No free chips and salsa but it was reasonably priced at $2.01 with three salsas and on hind sight the dinner would be more than I can eat but I should have tried them. I ordered the carne Asada, chorizo and carnitas tacos with rice and beans. My server asked If I wanted the fake protein chorizo or house made so I laughed and I said I just ordered beef and pork so no I want the real pork chorizo. My food came quick and it had a nice presentation. The meat looked generous on the tacos so I tasted them by themselves before eating the tacos and I thought they were nicely seasoned but no big palette flavors like garlic or spices and basically bland so the fresh toppings really helped. Side note is that all the meats were on the dry side and chunky. The house chorizo with potatoes was sad because the potatoes/taste didn't come through and it looked like Al pastor pork chunks. The beans were dark and thick, seasoned nicely but no big bean flavors like some places. The rice was cooked perfectly al dente, seasoned nicely with carrots and peas with a plantain chunk on top. My final thought is this that is Tex Mex style for hipster Wauwatosa and not authentic style Mexican food which is ok that I liked but it's not 20th in Lincoln Ave/ national Ave but it's still good for what it is. read more

Good food for a good price! I went on Taco Thursday and got a $3 soy chorizo, $3 Z-shrimp, and around $5 fried avocado and bacon taco. The soy chorizo was not for me, but a great alternative to meat. The Z-shrimp was refreshing. The fried avocado was delicious and I got two big pieces! I was also very happy to see that the rice and beans were free with an order of three tacos. The chips and three salsas are perfect for a group with different spice preferences! The waitress reccommended what most people order amd checked in a good amount. I ordered the French dip taco and it was lackluster on flavor, downright boring. The Korean taco was better, but not outstanding. I had a side of pinto beans that tasted like they came out of a can with bacon added. Maybe my being from California, that has an amazing number of taquerias, has made me a taco snob. Along with the food, the wait time from order to service seemed too long considering they were not busy. Last thing, don't expect to have a quiet conversation. My first experience with Bel air was over 10 years when they were one of the few places in Milwaukee that serves vegetarian meals...and I have been coming here ever since. They have a great happy hour 4-6 weekdays. Their margaritas are my favorite and only for $5. They are more on the tart side which I love. They make sure not to make them very sweet. You may want to try their trash can nachos, too, which are super yummy and a good steal. As for meals, I usually go for the tostado salad which is unlike any other tostada I can find in the Milwaukee. I have probably ordered the tostada salad more than 100 times. The drink I had was good however, when I asked for an extra shot, the bartender did not let me order it. However! Our food was freezing cold. We sent it back and we were given cold food AGAIN. At that point we just decided to take it and finish up. The manager was saying our food was cold because it's cold outside. Pretty disappointing because I have had good food at belair before. Excellent lunch! We had 2 servers, one who was training. Both very good and attentive. They now charge for the chips and salsa but it's reasonable at $2 with complimentary refills. Makes sense in this day and age. The chips were warm and fresh. Perfect! The $2 taco options for Tuesday and Thursday are great. I tried one I normally wouldn't order (Ninja Pig), and it was pretty good. Little sweet and great crunch from the fresh toppings. The carnita taco was good with fresh pico. Have gone to BelAir many times in the ten or so years since I first discovered it, and usually had an enjoyable time. I have since moved away, and last night I visited again for the first time in awhile. This place is headed in the wrong direction. The removal of complimentary chips and salsa was the first red flag, and the flavors in the rest of the meal did not help my souring impression. The kitchen just simply seems uninspired - fritos were clogging my birria burrito, and overall it was kind of a dry, chewy mess. Taco prices I fear are too high for the quality they are delivering. Still enjoyed my company, and the patio space was refreshing, but I am worried that BelAir has gone completely gringo at this point. read more

Quality & Service has gone way down.. The last few times my husband and I have eaten here, the service has been super inattentive and slow. Staff standing around in the back complaining about being short staffed rather than cleaning tables (which are filthy). This visit (to use up the rest of a gift card), host tried to sit us at 4 different tables before finding a clean one. Very shocked to see that $2 Thursdays and Tuesdays are mostly eliminated. The only $2 tacos left are spicy pollo and black bean and corn. The other options are now increased in price from $3-5. We love stopping at BelAir for takeout tacos and queso. We've also dined in during non-Covid times and have had great experiences with dining in as well. One of my favorite tacos is their housemade chorizo tacos, which come with potatoes, radish, cilantro, and queso fresco. I've also tried their spicy pollo chimichanga, which is great. One time I ordered their carne asada bowl, which sounded great served with with steak, black beans, crema, onions, cilantro, guacamole, rice, lettuce, queso fundido, salsa roja-but the reality? It was a little ho-hum. One thing I love is how quick their service is. We can order from home (right on the Yelp app) and by the time we get there 10 minutes later, our eats are ready to go! Plus, their currently open until 11pm, which makes it nice if you're in the mood for some post 10pm munchies. During COVID, the staff is all appropriately wearing masks and enforcing social distancing. We've been only doing to-go orders but noticed that they do have plexiglass partitions in their dining area and periodically around the bar (so you can sit at the bar with a dining companion or two and have a partition between you and any other groups at the bar). Went to BelAir to celebrate Tosa Restaurant Week since they had some great deals on Tacos & Margs! I got the strawberry house margarita on the rocks and it was flavorful and just as strong as I wanted it to be. I got three tacos: the Carnitas, Carne Asada, & Zihuatanejo Shrimp. The shrimp was my favorite, although messy it was delish, had a little spice, and a good texture. The Carne Asada was my least favorite, the meat was pretty dry and required me to dip it in the salsa we had from our chips and salsa. -UNACCEPTABLE We came in bright and early shortly after opening this Thursday. It was a group of 4 of us, we are all teenagers, around 16. Are waitress was Shar'na. We all work in the service industry, and have been in the same service industries for years, so we understand that mornings might not be delightful. But, our waitress Shar'na was very short with us, but we just brushed it off. We noticed that other people (who were older) were getting sat in her section as well, but the service was completely different from ours. It almost seemed intentional, and very disrespectful. As we work in the service industry as well, we know to treat all customers with kindness regardless of the customers service. But, we were very kind and thankful, and our waitress Shar'na treated us differently from other customers. One of the girls joining us, is allergic to cilantro. She had forgotten that the tacos have cilantro on it but ordered 3 tacos with small adjustments to the toppings- but had forgotten to remove cilantro. When her order came, she noticed her tacos had cilantro on it, so we waived over our waitress Shar'na. My friend was very apologetic because it was her mistake for forgetting to remove cilantro, and she was asking what her options were. Our waitress, who did not look at all pleased, stood there silently and told my friend "well, if I were to fix your order, I'd have to rewrite the toppings and make the chefs remake it. Can u like not eat it?" And I followed with "oh, she's allergic to cilantro, but she ordered it on accident. Could she get it removed or replaced?." The waitress Shar'na then said "okay. I'll see what the kitchen can do." We were very thankful that she had at least tried. Our waitress Shar'na then came back and just threw the plate of only 2 tacos onto our table without making any eye contact or saying anything. And my friend originally ordered 3 tacos, but Shar'na are waitress just gave her 2. Reluctantly, our waitress took it off our check. But, this wasn't the last time Shar'na was going to give us the silent treatment. She'd ask all of her other tables how they were doing and checked up on them many times, but checked up on us once and made it a one word sentence. At this point, we realize that she was being extremely disrespectful towards us SPECIFICALLY and decided to take it upon herself to give us the worst service we've ever received. My other friend had just ordered water as well and finished it in the first 20 minutes we were there and was never offered or acknowledged a refill since Shar'na our waitress was so short with us and never offered us anything like you'd usually get in normal service. Our waitress Shar'na then just did the same thing and threw the check on our table, made no eye contact, and walked away. That was our last interaction with her. Fortunately , this has been the absolute worst service we have ever experienced and will never come back to that restaurant since the disrespect just set a horrible experience for us all. As for Shar'na, the waitress, I hope that she does not pay all of her customers that type of service and step back from being disrespectful towards customers; who, are minors. If you're unwilling to give good service and respect towards your customers ESPECIALLY when we were very verbal with being thankful and were very polite, I recommend not being in the service industry, because I unfortunately have to write a bad review towards this business even though it was just our rude waitress. Food was amazing; but we were skeptic that things that aren't supposed to be in our food could be in our food because of the very noticeable hate that waitress gave towards us. read more

Hit or miss service I've visited a few Bel Air locations but finally got a chance to eat at the Wauwatosa Bel Air Cantina on a recent Tuesday night. I think because it was Taco Tuesday we weren't able to be seated at a table right away without a reservation but we opted to sit at the bar where we could get full service. The bar area felt a little dirty. Almost like they hadn't cleaned it up after the last few guests. Our server was friendly and got us menus and took our drink order right away, which quickly arrived. We put in an order of queso and it totally lived up to my hype! I LOVE queso blanco and Bel Air is consistently my favorite queso in Milwaukee. I could seriously eat an entire one myself. It's simple, savory, and perfectly melty. The item did arrive with no small plates so we had to remind the server of this. We also had to remind the server to bring us waters. My husband and I both put it an order for 2 tacos each. I feel like Bel Air sometimes gets a bad rep for not being authentic, but IMHO that's not the point! Bel Air serves up unique Tex Mex and (I think) prides itself on its off the beaten path varieties. Our tacos arrived incredibly fast and after a few bites it became sort of obvious these had been under a warmer or maybe the components had been. They were pretty dry and just shy of average. Called Brookfield talked to the manager, Louise, who was clearly not concerned, told me to call door dash. I saw their rating, thought it was better than a 4.2, but I guess not! This gal needed tacos to go with her homemade margarita, so naturally we ordered pickup from Belair! The turnaround time was quick - called in and picked up within 15 minutes. It was a contact-free situation where social distancing was definitely in place (thanks for that!). We got home and quickly unwrapped everything we ordered: chips and salsa, tacos, shrimp bowl, and a burrito. First of all, their house-fried chips are painfully addicting. Even though I could literally eat them plain, the salsa verde and spicy arbol salsa are great additions. My husband's carne asada burrito was massive and "delicious," according to him. I couldn't help but try out friend's shrimp burrito bowl, and it was flavorful; can't go wrong with citrus slaw and chipotle mayo. My fish tacos were subpar but hey, that didn't stop me from finishing them. They were just fairly plain, so I ended up adding a few extra toppings of my own. Beans and rice on the side too - always a plus. I love nothing more than going to Belair IRL (in real life), ordering a big pitcher of their delicious house margs, and sitting on the patio with friends. I had hoped my last few visits to BelAir were just flukes, but unfortunately, they weren't. The food is decent, but the service continues to disappoint--at an exhausting level. There hasn't been a hostess the last several times I've dined there, which seems to leave the responsibility to the waitstaff. On my most recent lunch visit, someone eventually sat the two ladies waiting in front of me at a table, then walked away while I was still waiting to be seated and never returned. This person 100% saw me because they thought I was dining with the 2 ladies ahead of me at the hostess stand. To make matters worse, I watched an employee in a BelAir t-shirt eating chips by the bar without acknowledging me at all--even after we made eye contact. Perhaps she was on break, but damn that seems weird to eat your food and refuse to acknowledge actual customers when you're obviously an employee. Met a friend here late afternoon to beat the $2 taco dinner rush and we ended up staying after the dinner tables were clearing out! We chose BelAir for the $2 taco Tuesday special and am glad we did. The vibe here is industrial, rustic and colorful with so many fun details everywhere you look. It was quieter when we arrived at the start of happy hour but even through the dinner rush, neither our convo or service suffered as the dining area filled around us. Families, couples, and friends all taking advantage of the Tuesday special! The margarita for two ($15) was a solid choice although cheaper options are available as well (I.e. beer). My friend took advantage of a happy hour appetizer special (ceviche) that looked amazing while I had the $2 tacos (with free rice & beans when you order three tacos!). The carne asada taco was my favorite, pollo verde following and the roasted rainbow roots I probably won't order again (some of the roots weren't tender enough for my liking). Fun fact about the bathroom: Spanish lessons are played so you might pick up a couple words while you're in there! Overall, the experience was great! Ok so I'm in town for work and a colleague says it's taco Tuesday and your a foodie and run a page on Facebook for foodies..I'm taking you to a place that will be awesome! So of course I'm totally in! We go to Bel Air Cantina and first thing I notice is the modern yet old school design inside! We were greeted for lunch and pointed up to the bar to eat! Unfortunately we were working so no adult beverages for us! We get our menus and on Tuesday they have certain tacos for ONLY $2! There is a great selection and they have a twist to them! One thing I truly appreciate is they offer flour or corn tortillas! Boom that's a home run in my book because I love corn tortillas! Again, service was excellent and when you order 3 or more tacos rice and beans come free! Winning! We placed our orders and started to dig into the chips and salsa choices! They make all the salsa in house and man it was all freaking awesome! I could just eat that! Tacos came and they were a very good size and the rice (I'm not a beans guy) was steaming and looked fresh! I got the Ninja taco, steak churri and talipia taco! The talipia was solid (not my favorite of the three)! The steak churri with the habanero spread was delicious! That habanero touch is a keeper! But the shining star was the Ninja taco! Folks, this taco is like heaven in your mouth! Your flavor senses go on overload with all the different flavors but they work so well together! It's also stuffed to the brim with meat! Next time I'm in Milwaukee this will be a mandatory stop!
