This was an authentic Belgian waffle: crispy outside, sweet chewy bliss on the inside. The sauces we tried, traditional chocolate or Speculoos, were extraordinarily good. As satisfying as Belgian waffles we've had in Brussels. The shop was clean with classic furnishing and fixtures. A cozy spot for casual date or break from touring. We came at rush lunch hour as a group of four. We had the croque monsieur and two waffles, which was a good amount of food for two people. The sandwich was solid, but not nothing to write home about. Service was a little slow, but all was forgiven when the waffles arrived. They were fantastic! Two of us had the "speculoos", which ended up being a fantastic sauce compliment to the crisp and not-too-sweet waffle. Our friend, who added whipped cream to hers, remarked that hers was "stupid good". Next time I may try it with banana and whipped cream added. My memories of Belgium are a little fuzzy, but this sure seemed like an authentic and rare treat to enjoy in Texas. Will definitely return. read more

The waffles here are simply the best that I have ever had the pleasure of eating--In my 41 years on this planet! I travel professionally, and frequent go to Europe, and Belgium, for work and play so I make the above statement with full confidence and free will. It's going to be difficult to describe the sheer magic and splendor that I felt when I was first presented with the aforementioned waffle, but I'll give it a go. First off, it takes a few minutes to prepare this berry and cream laden treasure so don't barge in there in a hurry demanding instant deliciousness, because this level of waffle perfection takes about 8 minutes to prepare. Pro tip: order a cafe espresso, or tea and sip on that while you wait. This being my second day in he Alamo city, I must say that my expectations for great food were rather low after being tricked into eating horrible Tex mex and sub-standard BBQ, but as I strolled up the street toward the Alamo, I was drawn into the welcoming atmosphere of the shop. I ordered the strawberries and fresh whipped cream waffle. 6 to 9 minutes later, I was presented with a perfectly made waffle adorned with fresh strawberries and what appeared/tasted like fresh made whipped cream. Two huge dollops of the whipped cream. The berry to cream to waffle ratio was perfect. The waffle itself was soft enough on the inside, but the outer texture was caramelized lightly. That's where the magic happened for me. If you love waffles, and other homemade treasures prepared by people who care about what they serve then you owe it to yourself to try this gem in San Antonio. I don't get why the reviews are so high on the waffles. Maybe I went on an off day...I ordered a Belgian waffle with strawberries and vanilla ice cream. I thought the waffle was just OK. It had a odd texture that was definitely caramelized, with a chewy interior like they describe, but I didn't care for the texture. I've had waffles in Belgium, so I get that they are different than American waffles. Belgian Sweets has homemade ice cream which I'd heard was awesome so I was excited to try it. I had assumed that they put their homemade ice cream on the waffles if you order ice cream, but I found out from reading Yelp reviews that they use store bought on the waffles. A little disappointing. Also, their store hours were posted as opening at 2, so that's when we got there, but they didn't open until 2:30. Looking at Yelp reviews it looks like this happens frequently. It was pretty expensive too (like $14 for the waffle and a bottle of water), which I guess is to be expected so close to the Alamo/tourist areas. read more

I found this place as my bf and I went to downtown to look at the Christmas tree and walk around after a full dinner. I had a coffee ( cant remember what type) and we both got a creme Brulee. We both loved it. Music was super loud but I'm assuming since Ripley s is right nextto it so prolly trying to drown the noise. Music was really good so it didn't bother me but my bf was little annoyed by it. Im assuming it was the owner he checked on us making sure we were pleased with our order. We ate here twice during our week in San Antonio. The first time we went for ice cream. It is homemade in small batches. They were out of a couple of flavors but I chose Peanut Butter Banana and it was delicious! We were intrigued by the Belgian waffles and made plans to return for one. Oh my, I'm so glad we did! We never miss going for Belgian Waffles when we are in Europe so we were delighted to see this place. It is a little hole-in-the wall about four blocks from the River walk. We had to wait because it was only open Thursday through Sunday but it was worth the wait. The waffles were just like the ones we had in Bruges and Brussels and the chocolate was the best we've ever tasted. We went their two days in a row; it was that good! Amazing Belgian (Liege) waffles, just like in Belgium. In typical Belgian fashion, the store does not open quite on time, but it's worth the wait for a waffle. I do wish it were open more days a week though, I would definitely take advantage of that! read more

Worst experience ever!!! We are SA natives. Drove downtown for desert. Got to the place and I needed to use the restroom. Locked and needed a code to open. Went to counter, wife placing an order, asked for code and the guy says you have to purchase something. I said ok this is my wife and she is placing order, can I have the code now before I pee in my pants. No you have to pay for the order that's our policy. I said I understand but I need to go to the restroom badly. By the way I am a senior citizen. The owner turns around and makes the same policy statement. I say run the credit card I need the code. $10 later and a lousy desert I got to use the restroom. Not only was the restroom dirty so was the entire place. The interaction with the store owner on Saturday April 8, 2017 around 5:30pm was one that left my co-workers and I feeling very hurt, saddened, disrespected and disappointed with what we thought was supposed to be Southern Hospitality. We had been having a very pleasant trip. And even after having been unfortunate enough to be caught in the severe flight cancellation issues with Delta Airlines, we did not feel stuck, in San Antonio. We looked at our unfortunate situation as an extra day to spend in a place we enjoyed. Upon entry into the store, myself and two of my co-workers sat down and called the remaining bunch of us to come join us to indulge in some afternoon ice cream. We sat in the relatively empty shop and began to discuss our plans for early travelling the next morning. Once we all were there (approximately 5 minutes after we entered), our conversation quickly shifted because a few of us discovered after having our flight cancelled and rebooked, we now also had no guaranteed seats on the new plane and might have to be on standby for a following flight. Needless to say, we were a bit distracted and did forget to immediately order anything. The owner of the shop came from behind the counter and very rudely said we don't take orders at the table, you'll need to order at the counter. I reassured him that we did know that and would be ordering shortly. He restated this again and said that we were taking up space in his relatively small store and they were extremely busy and if we did not intend on ordering then our commandeering of the table would need to end. He was extremely condescending, dismissive and very curt with the delivery of his message. One of my coworkers blurted out "What?" as she looked around because the store was empty aside from us and a couple with their children. There were at least 4 empty tables in front and behind us. At that point, we decided to leave because staying and spending money in an establishment in which the owner did not value his customers was not something we wanted to do. We were in fact, so disturbed we left 2 orders of take out from the place we previously went for dinner. Upon realizing that we left our food, I immediately turned around to retrieve it and it was gone from the table. After walking off the initial shock of the situation, myself and one coworker decided to return to the shop to explain the situation to him in the hopes of a mutual understanding and getting back the take out orders, because it was our dinner. I asked to speak to him at the counter and I said that we came with every intention of ordering and we were just very distracted because of our travel situation. He dismissed me once again and began to rattle off about taking up space in his store, and my coworker's "snarky" and disdainful behavior because she blurted out "What?" at him. He yelled at us, spoke to us as though we were children and really seemed to become hostile because we were not engaging in a yelling match with him. He even went to far as to say that he would throw us out if he could not continue to scream and yell at us about my coworker whose behavior was so "outrageous". At that point, I realized our efforts to rectify the situation were futile and I chose to leave. I was very sad and the rest of our time in San Antonio was soured by this interaction. Upon reading the reviews that received less than 3 stars on Google, I notice that this is the trend with this owner. Very harsh, confrontational exchanges seem to be sought out by this man. It's sad to say that we didn't even get to taste or review anything edible in your store because your disgusting attitude turned our stomachs before we even got the chance. Spare me a long belligerent response Juan. Don't bother to ban me or my coworkers from your store. Just know that myself, and anyone I know who visits San Antonio will never frequent your establishment. We'll be sure to go to Francesco's Gelato again! We kind of stumbled upon this little shop and even though the chocolates is what brought me in, we ordered a plain waffle. I was very annoyed with the $4.50 price for a regular size waffle that had no toppings and the fact that even to add powder sugar, they charge $0.50. But it was 10:30pm and we had the munchies so we thought what the heck. The waffle was delicious, it didn't need any topping at all, and left me wanting more. It did NOT taste like the regular boring waffle you order at ihop or make at home. I didn't try anything else, but I would definitely be back for more waffles! P.S. Again, try it without any topping. Interesting taste to the Belgian waffle which is chewy and slightly doughy. There is sugar added to the top of it which gives it a nice caramelized taste and a crunchy exterior. Overall the waffle was quite sweet, and although not too large, I'm glad I shared it. I had it with the Belgian chocolate ice cream which was yummy in taste but not very creamy in texture. Hands down THE BEST dessert place we've been to in quite a while! Been here twice already in 3 days, we even braved the downtown Fiesta insanity and its ridiculous parking nightmare situation just to come again. We'd give more than 5 stars if we could, because this little shop is wonderful, and brings back wonderful memories for us. Our oldest son used to be stationed in Germany ( Stuttgart) and so we 've visited Germany and Belgium many times already. The waffles here at this little store are just as good as the ones we used to get in the Grand Place in Brussels Belgium. Very very tasty! Most people we suspect probably go for the waffles with all the delicious looking toppings they have, but my husband and I are waffle purists at this point, and so we went for the plain waffles they call" gaufre de liege". Simply outstanding! These waffles are the type that don't even need toppings, that's how tasty the dough is all on its own. It's completely different and utterly superior to what passes for waffles here in the States. Our second time here we heard French being spoken next to us and wound up striking up a conversation with a lovely couple who turned out to be Belgian, and who also had ordered the plain waffles. They mentioned that this little place is actually where a lot of the Belgian expats go to get their waffle fix. And so right between Ripley's and Jimmy Johns of all places, is the best Belgian place we've been to since Brussels! Who knew, we'd never have expected it. I was very disappointed. Per the one website, this eatery/dessert shop opens at noon on Sunday. We arrived about 12:10pm. They were closed. I assumed that the information I read was outdated.The sign on the door reflects opening at 12:30pm. Being on vacation- time is not a huge issue. So our group decided to walk around a little and come back. We arrived at "Belgain Sweets" for the 2nd time at 12:35- still closed. We stood in front of the shop and watch four other customers try to enter without success. By now, it was almost12:40. I knock on the window, so I could get someones attention. I could see the employees, but they did not even look my way. Another three minutes past, a man came to put a sign with the daily specials out front. Without any kind of apology, he said we need about five more minutes. He walked back in the shop and relocked the door. When I saw the same man returning with another sign. I was hopefully that he would show some trace of common courtesy or customer service ability. He said nothing. When I pointed out that rather than having people wait he should have apologized and I asked if he was the manager. He became angry and yelled at me that I was harassing him. Harassing him for having the expectation that an employee is suppose to be on time for work, ready to work. If you can catch this place open,who knows,it may be good. But with employees like this- it is not likely..... read more
