Nice update on the inside. Good lighting, not too overly bright which gives it a good vibe, nice ambiance, and not overly loud as well. You can actually talk to your table person or persons. Though I have not ordered all things on the menu, the food is consistently tasty. Pasta dishes arrive well presented, taste great and the service is attentive. I have tried the salads as well and they are also good, and there are a variety of other dishes that I'm sure are lovely. Fish options as well. They have a nice wine selection, pleasant and inviting not over lit atmosphere. The bar is great to sit at as well. Overall I've never been disappointed and go often enough to notice. Made reservations for a small group and we were seated immediately. The place was beautifully decorated and clean wood floors, bar and bathrooms. Waitress was friendly and made good drink suggestion. What a hidden gem. My partner and I found ourselves shopping in Harlem later than we expected. Bella Luna was a quick drive over on a Wednesday evening. We were in luck because it was very close to closing. We were immediately seated after seeing the hostess. In the evening the ambiance is absolutely stunning for a casual dining restaurant. We got right to it, ordering the broccoli soup as an appetizer, spaghetti with meatballs, and the tri-color tortellini with no prosciutto in alfredo sauce. Absolutely everything we had, down to the wine and ginger ale, gave an elevated experience. The broccoli soup had onions in it so I only took a very small taste. It was very creamy, reminiscent of broccoli cheddar soup (sans cheddar). The tortellini was cooked to Al dente perfection, in a lightly buttery yet creamy sauce. This is a 3.5 star review. I came to Bella Luna for dinner with a group of about 6 girlfriends. It's a nice quiet restaurant on the Upper West Side. I ordered a mango margarita and the white pizza which were both pretty good! My only gripe was how slow the service was. It took about 25 minutes to serve our drinks and took another 45 minutes for them to even take our food orders. I will say that once our order was taken, the food came out pretty fast. It's a nice place for maybe a date night, but not really ideal for groups as the restaurant is relatively small. Would I return, probably not because there are so many other dope restaurants in the city and this was slightly above average. Nothing to write home about honestly. read more

We made a reservation for dinner on my birthday and everything from the food to the service was wonderful. It was a rainy evening and they had bins at the front of the restaurant for our umbrellas. We were seated quickly and once we were at the table I noticed how beautiful the restaurant was with the lighting and wall art. Our server was wonderful at keeping our glasses filled the entire evening. The food was delicious and I sampled a little bit of every dish our table ordered. I love this place. Good prices and good food. The dishes I ordered tonight were a mixed bag, the minestrone needed salt. And then in an attempt to go on the healthier side I got the grilled chicken salad. The chicken was very well cooked, not too dry. But I didn't love the crunch of the mushrooms. I hosted a birthday party for 11; 5 adults and 6 kids at 3:30pm. We spent a day at the Museum of Natural History (we called ahead 2 days prior) and the restaurant was able to accommodate us. The atmosphere was warm and cozy with candles on the tables. The walls were decorated with Christmas lights. The service was top notch! Our order was taken quickly and efficiently. I knew the kids had a simple pallet so I ordered 2 Margherita pies, penne a la vodka, pasta bolognese, calamari as well as mussels and a spicy lamb pie for the adults. The food came quickly and we gobbled everything up! We finished the meal with ice cream and gelato. Visited here on a random weekday while working and walking around the upper West side with coworkers searching for a lunch place. This was totally unplanned but luckily we were able to find some outdoor seating and the staff and the manager or perhaps the owner were very accommodating. Fortunate to say also that the menu is quite extensive and caters to various tastes and discernment in food. For example there are lots of vegetarian only and gluten-free options. Service was quick on point and precise so nothing to complain about. Pricing for the upper West side as expected a little bit on the higher end but the portions were more than generous. For example on my salad that had chicken I was not hunting for the chicken. I will definitely come back here again if I were in the neighborhood as everything was very solid. read more

Really it's a 31/2 star. Food was 5 star but service and staff brought it down. It was Saturday night and I went to Yelp for Italian food on UWS. Bella Luna came up #1 . I read the reviews and went to the website. On the home page there was a red box that said "Reservations" Available times were 8:30 & 9:00. I chose 8:30 and had a choice of indoor, outdoor or the piazza. I chose indoor. A couple of pop ups came up noting, that if you really want outdoor and only indoor was available you would not be accommodated. OK, no issue. I had to register on their "Resy" site and I did. Received a text with what clearly looked like a confirmation. Got to the restaurant at 8:20 and was told there was no reservation. Showed the confirmation and the little guy at the door kept telling me I never made a reservation. Ok... text said it was from Resy... isn't that your online reservation booking service? Yes, he said, but we don't have your reservation. Long story short, they got us a table. Funny, tables were leaving, and it really looked as if we were the only ones with what we thought was, an 8:30 reservation. The place was clearing out and there was no one else was behind me coming in or waiting for a table. No one said, I'm sorry, no one said.. please wait at the bar, have a drink and don't worry, we'll get you a table. It was more like... no reservation... wait 20 minutes and maybe we can seat you. So don't make me feel like you went out of your way to help me and that I was trying to scam a reservation on a Saturday night. Maybe you should have said, clearly our system made a mistake, I see your text from the service, I will look into what happened and please, no worries, I'll get a table for you. Our server was Ok. He did his job. The food was good. The Veal Marsala was excellent. Tender and the sauce was exceptional, with plenty of mushrooms. Linguini Bella Luna was good, but I've had better. I'm in NY a lot and spend a lot of time in this neighborhood, I'm always looking for a great place that's close by. Unfortunately, This Isn't It. Bella Luna is an UWS must! I would consider myself a local as I do come fairly often, and it's always a huge hit! The service is amazing and you get your food in about 15 minutes! The place has such a pretty and elegant vibe, truly living up to this five star review I'm writing! They have plenty of options, especially if you have picky little ones such as mine. I'll admit We can be pretty critical as actual Italians so my bar was pretty low as most Italian food here is pretty Americanized. I ordered for the table muscles and fried calamari both were cooked to perfection. For the calamari the sauce was made really well I have to say a lot of restaurants mess this up, they didn't. The muscles were also cooked perfectly and their sauce was also made really well. The fish was fresh and very good. Braised lamb shanks for all 3 of us. The lamb was falling off the bone and truly braised also cooked and seasoned to perfection. My mom really liked the mash. We enjoyed our lavish lunch, she was very happy. read more

Visited New York City a few months back and stumbled upon this place during their soft launch phase. Came to eat here after watching a show on Broadway, so it was later in the evening and we basically had the place to ourselves. The ambiance was great - lighting and background music were perfect and the wait staff was extremely attentive (not that we had much competition). Our server was very knowledgeable about the menu and helped us to make some selections we were happy with. We started with some calamari and burrata. The calamari was perfectly crispy, yet tender on the inside. The sauces complemented the dish perfectly. The burrata was coupled with figs, prosciutto and some excellent balsamic vinegar - perfect harmony of textures and flavors. Can't remember the exact names of the mains we ordered. The proteins were just ok. My wife had some kind of fish dish which was a tad overdone and needed a little more seasoning. The pasta on my dish was perfect, but I recall the protein to be unremarkable. The tiramisu was amazing - perfect amount of sweetness and subtle, yet distinct textures made for a really enjoyable experience. I got takeout from here. The seafood pasta was super gummy and not good. I've made fresh pasta before and know what happens when you don't properly dry the pasta or it gets clumped together. That is exactly what happened here. The noodles were stuck together and were gummy as uncooked. read more

My husband and I have been here a few times before. Nine out of 10 times, the food has been good, but we have usually gone there during the week when the place was pretty quiet. Last night was busy. In addition, they have a new menu now. No more polenta, which was something that drew us there. But we noticed several other annoying issues: 1) I ordered the Bella Luna pizza which could have been good, but for all the chunky pieces of onion that were added to it. Who is the chef / cook? Onions and garlic are used as flavoring agents in Italian cooking, not as primary ingredients. Once I picked them out, there was a large plate of onions that the waiter took back to the kitchen (I wish I'd taken a picture of that); 2) the service was chaotic and several times, we had to request our food / cutlery back because the waiters were too quick at picking up items that they thought we were done with (they should have asked us whether we were done with them in advance). The final straw was when they brought the macchiato at the end, and as the one waiter delivered the coffee, the other waiter took away my spoon, so I was unable to mix the sugar in the coffee. It was exhausting having to keep an eye on what they were doing while trying to have a conversation with my husband; 3) my husband's tomato sauce (on the Margherita pizza) was undercooked. He said it tasted like ketchup. 4) our waiter was visibly upset as he dealt with us, kept throwing his eyes up to the ceiling, sighing and even left our table quickly. We enjoyed eating at that restaurant before, but it is unlikely that we'll be back there too soon. read more
