Happy hour ends at 6:30 and this place was busy. There was barely a seat at the bar and it is a very big bar. There are also some seats at the front of the restaurant that open up to the street for great people watching. Very lively vibe. Unique cocktail menu with sake as well. I came here for dinner last night and we wanted to try the happy hour menu. Unfortunately it was just okay. There were also a ton of flies that we kept having to swat away which was pretty gross. We were seated indoors too. We got the kenpachi, sake and hamachi. The kenpachi and sake was the best imo. The hamachi was meh. For the rolls we got the Kinney and tuna love. Unfortunately the tuna love wasn't very good. The Kinney was pretty good though. We also got the crispy tuna rice. This was okay. Let's start with the quality of food first, it's truly so fresh and delicious. The miso cod was so incredible but the standout for me was the hotate which was so good and melt in your mouth perfection. We also got the Kinney roll which was good and the kampachi crudo which was great but I think could have benefited from a few bits of rock salt sprinkled on top or splash of yuzo to bring forward truffle ponzu. I'll also say the menu is really great to help make gf selections easy. Again, I recommend everyone eat where they're most comfortable but I felt that the staff was knowledgeable and helpful in selections. The service was good, we went during an early dinner time so it wasn't quite as busy but it did end up getting fairly loud and busy later on. It's a very vibey restaurant, and very much a hot spot so if that's the type of night you're looking for this is def the place. Little suggestion, don't sit at the bar on a super hot day under the AC because the heat will cause drippage, but still enjoyed my time even in the splash zone lol. This place was super packed and we tried to put our name in for a table for four. They told us it would take about an hour for a table, so we ended up slowly a masking a large enough area at the bar to end up sitting and eating there. Everything was so good, the cocktails, and the food just felt like a really great experience . We tried the Venus on the half pipe, the Spicy garlic edamame, Spicy owa hotate, they Kinney roll, Tokyo time and Lobster roll. Everything was truly so delicious and memorable you can't go wrong. As far as the restaurant itself, there is a huge area in the back with more seating and a calmer vibe, the front by the bar is a lot of standing and drinking in people having a good time. read more

Wow. What a memorable experience at Owa! Came here for a romantic date night and had the best first time experience. Upon walking in, we were greeted and sat down based on reservations on a Monday evening. There were three different seating areas that each had their own atmosphere. We chose to sit in the open lighting, that then turned into romantic lighting when the sunset! The owner Mario came out to greet his customers which is a testament to how much the owner cares about his presentation in his establishment, his care for community, and love for food and overall customer satisfaction! The food was delicious! Everything tasted phenomenal! My favorite was the krudo appetizer and the wagyu roll. I loved the Smokey taste and presentation! Me and my friend came here for dine LA excited to try some new things on their menu, we called and asked how much and they said $25 pp which we thought was a great deal. We got there for dinner only to find out the price was actually $45 pp, but it is the same as the lunch menu. That is a little scammy in my opinion, considering if we came 3 hours earlier it would have been $20 less. The food was okay. But I was not impressed with their service. I asked where the fish was from and no one knew. The bar was dirty, and so were the chairs. I had to ask for it to be cleaned multiple times. I was not warmly greeted and the sushi wasn't authentic at all. This place needs better standards. And more honesty regarding the menu. read more

I have walked by Owa before and had been intrigued by their lunch special, which I still need to try. We wanted to hang out in Abbot Kinney and we were in the mood for sushi, so we made a last minute reservation. This is a very long/deep restaurant with three rooms. The first room is more of the bar with views of Abbot Kinney for people watching. The next room is outdoors, and the innermost has some tables and some sushi bar seating. We were in the innermost room, the bar seating had purse hooks but the tables did not, so the waiter let me use one of the chairs in the unused table behind me for my purse. We decided to split the spicy garlic edamame, the tuna love, the Kinney, and the Tokyo time rolls. Do not sleep on the spicy edamame, the bowl came out steaming with the most delectable almost jammy consistency sauce on the edamame which we really liked. Of the rolls, the Kinney was my favorite but I really liked the crispy rice base of the Tokyo time as well. Their cocktail menu looked amazing and when we are in the mood for a fun cocktail I would definitely want to sit in the first room and enjoy some drinks. The food was perfectly fine-everything tasted good. However, in my opinion, the prices should be about 30% lower, since a restaurant experience is about more than just the food. The menu was dirty and sticky, and the tables were far from clean, either. The atmosphere was a disaster. On a Sunday afternoon, a live band was playing while dance music blared from the speakers at the same time. The combination created an absolutely unbearable cacophony that the staff completely ignored. Service was slow; we had to flag down the waiter. And the policy of adding a 3% surcharge for credit card payments is unacceptable. I understand the desire to make a profit, but it's not worth it. read more

I have come here a couple of times. They have a great happy hour to start. We came for dinner with a large group - the cocktails are always great. We also got some edamame to share, easy. We dined here, as part of our Red Dining Book LA experience, and loved it! It was our first time back since the Wabi Saba days (I was glad to hear that they hired most of the old staff back!). Am I missing something here? Saw the great reviews and was excited to give this spot a try, but was very underwhelmed with the experience. The space: hip, trendy and a bit rustic. The aesthetics themselves are very nice, but the seating is way too tight and the tables are all facing different directions in the main dining area creating a chaotic feel. The food: everything was fine, but for the price point I expect something way more special when it comes to sushi. The spicy tuna crispy rice could have easily been half the price as it tasted like everyone else's. The salmon toro nigiri was solid, but not for $9 a piece, and our Kinney Roll was good, but no better than other spots charging a fraction of the price. The value to taste ratio was just not there for me. The service: Not only is this place overpriced, our server was trying to upsell nonstop the entire meal. We ordered an app, maki roll, 2 pieces of nigiri and 2 cocktails and literally within 30 seconds the server came back and asked "you sure you don't want anything else?" -- he then proceeded to do this two more times before all our food was all served. Got disappointed when we got tap water instead of sparkling. We said no to dessert and he insisted we look at the menu anyway. Then he stood over me and grunted when I hit the 18% button instead of 20%. Absolutely nuts. The bathrooms: why are the doors paper thin and translucent? It's a bummer because Abbott Kinney deserves a really great sushi spot. This felt like a Westside elite nightmare to me. Charge what you want, but at least get the food and service right. read more

Seeing all the great reviews and was excited until I stepped into the restaurant and saw how gross and dirty the restaurant is and they allow not just any dogs, but massive dog and pit bull inside the eating area of the restaurant. I don't mind if your dog is outside but inside the restaurant is unsanitary. I just ordered a Matcha to go because I felt the establishment was too dirty overall and was not feeling comfortable, eating raw sushi and unsterilized environment. The Matcha was an overpriced, bitter low-grade Matcha. Very disappointing wasn't cheap either, threw it out. Don't really know how the service is since we didn't stay to find out. Place was completely empty past noon on a Tuesday, not a good sign. Unfortunately, I won't never come back here. This was our old stomping ground Wabi Sabi, which was great, miss the old joint! read more

(asked for sriracha, so much better) 4 stars Spicy Crab Roll, w real crab meat, and seared tuna. Again, not spicy without added sriracha. Crispy onion and micro shiso so whimsical and pretty. 4 stars Matcha Tiramisu, very bland without any matcha flavor whatsoever. Sliced strawberry garnish was very old, limp and dried out, stuck to side of dish. Embarrassing to serve it like that. Really? 2 stars for being just plain cake & cream flavor. The dark, neon lights, and live music definitely gives this place a good aesthetic. For cocktails, I loved the Venus on The Half Pipe. The habanero had a good kick to it. For sushi rolls, our favorite was the Soul Roll and Tuna Love. I was disappointed in the Wagyu Truffle. The presentation was great but the roll itself lacked flavor and had too much cucumber. The Chu Toro Crudo is a great starter to share. Overall, cute spot but a little pricey. I'd recommend checking out the happy hour menu which is served at the bar only. read more

I must say this is an exceptional restaurant with great ambience. The hostess at the front is knowledgeable at the menu was answering. All questions sent me immediately at the bar because I was alone and all the bartenders were super attentive described all the drinks the menu it was happy hour everyone was outgoing enthusiastic in lightning made me feel like I've been there lots of times and it was really my first time there, and it was superb. My pallet was extremely well taken care of and the mixed drinks were just perfection. Went here back in January with some friends and loved it! Atmosphere was very cool with low lighting and neat decorations, the building just keeps going back. Will have to come back to just experience the bar area--very interesting shape! The one thing I'd say is it was a bit loud during the meal, so we had some trouble hearing each other. I came on a Saturday afternoon and had no problems getting a seat. They have a matcha and flower shop set up at their window Thurs-Sun from 8AM till around 2PM. I shopped from both and then sat down at the bar to order from the lunch menu. Based on recommendations from the bartender, I ordered the spicy tuna crispy rice, akami nigiri and kinney maki. I had very high expectations for OWA, especially given its location on Abbot Kinney and the hype around it. The vibes and atmosphere are definitely on point- stylish, lively, and fun. The music could have been a little less loud- it was hard to talk. Service was attentive and the cocktails were excellent, no complaints there. But when it comes to the food, I was underwhelmed. The sushi was just average at best, which is disappointing given the price point. Maki rolls running $25-$35 each and nigiri at $8-$15 per piece feels way out of line, especially when the quality doesn't back it up. For that kind of pricing, I expected something truly exceptional, and it just wasn't. On top of that, the bathroom situation really detracted from the overall experience. For such a high-end spot, the communal setup felt more like a college bar, and unfortunately, it seemed like people were openly using the stalls for more than just bathroom breaks. Definitely not the vibe you'd expect from a place charging these kinds of prices. Overall: great atmosphere, great drinks, solid service--but the food and the overall experience don't live up to the price tag. Will come back for drinks, but not the sushi. There's much better sushi out there. PS: Very tacky for a "high-end" restaurant to pass on the credit card service charge to their customers- Big turn off- our entire party thought it was so tacky given our $1000+ bill. read more

Stopped by during DineLA Restaurant Week and opted for the $25 lunch menu. What I picked was the following Blood orange yuzu salmon crudo- 5/5 on the flavor and the salmon was amazingly buttery and the presentation was absolutely gorgeous Kinney roll- 5/5 really good spice level, really fittingly paired garnishes and overall very tasty Matcha tiramisu- 4/5 overall great flavor here, the matcha mascarpone was to die for! The knock here is they claim to use ceremonial matcha and this was 100% culinary matcha, that would be perfectly fine inside the tiramisu but they also used some as garnish and that dull green and muted flavor did take away something from this dish. There's a certain crispness and smoothness to a really good ceremonial matcha that would have tasted so much better and made the presentation perfect. I also added on the Kinoko miso soup $10. Solid 3/5 this was a miso soup with added tomato paste, mushrooms, green onion, and tofu as well as fried tofu skins. I was very interested to try this based on the description and I am glad I tried this. While the tomato paste was a surprisingly good addition to the soup it very much overpowered the miso flavor one comes to expect and love from a miso soup and by the end of the bowl that tomato flavor was a bit too much. I think same ingredients with slightly less tomato paste would potentially be better. The only other knock I have is the service. When they were present everyone I interacted with was very kind and helpful. The issue is they hardly came by and were not near me to be able to be flagged down. When I received my first course I was not given soy sauce and wasabi/ginger. It took a while before a worker was close enough for me to ask and the soy was brought within seconds but nothing else was said. I waited a few more moments but the wasabi/ginger didn't come so I proceeded to eat my crudo. After that was finished and I was working on the miso soup then the wasabi and ginger came which at that point was too late. More communication would have been appreciated. Overall I 100% recommend this spot! A few minor hiccups but nothing major and nothing to make me want to stay away. I look forward to my next trip! read more

Came here for DineLA lunch. Ordered the spicy tuna crispy rice, Kinney roll, and tres leches dessert. The spicy tuna crispy rice was a good portion for 1 person, but the sushi just had 4 pieces - if you say "Kinney roll" without specifying that it's a half portion, I'm gonna assume it's a full roll. Plenty of food but still felt a bit misleading. The tres leches dessert was also just a couple bites but that was perfect for me - it was very tasty. My dining partner's matcha tiramisu - not good. Service was overwhelmed and slow, though props to our waitress for being super efficient and speedy. The runners tried to bring our sushi before the appetizer. They also tried to bring us another table's edamame, then took it away when corrected it was not the right table. However, the table next to us (two attractive, dressed up girls) got complimentary edamame? Huh. The spicy tuna crispy rice was phenomenal - one of the best I've had. The Kinney sushi was fine but did not have much flavor or rice, and was soggy - I assume they re-brought out the one they had tried to bring us 30-40 minutes earlier. Presentation and plating for the spicy tuna crispy rice was great. The Kinney sushi was a mess - the masago looked slapped on. Diet coke we ordered was completely flat - no carbonation at all, and it might've been low on the flavor syrup too. It's a no for me, dawg. read more

There was a very rambunctious table and it was very loud and the room area where we were seated, however, the bar area was actually nice and you don't even need a reservation to eat there. Served with some miso soy sauce type of sauce dollops (it looks beautiful, but the dish isn't for everyone if you're expecting rolls/sushi. 2.5/5 - Blood Orange Salmon Crudo: pretty disappointing.
