Belles Beach House is this beautiful "Tiki" style restaurant with a Hawaiian theme. The restaurant is huge and also has a rather large section for outdoor seating. Us four came for a nice brunch and Belles didn't disappoint. Their menu covered all facets of what a Sunday brunch should be and we all ordered something different so we could taste all of the differences. Starting with Belles: * EGG SANDWICH - applewood smoked bacon, Japanese BBQ sauce, provolone, sunny egg, tomato chili jam, avocado, English muffin * COCONUT CHIA GRANOLA BOWL - tropical fruit, raspberry compote, Greek yogurt, homemade granola * BURRITO - soft scrambled egg, housemade pork chorizo, jack cheese, crispy potato, scallions, serrano aioli Cheese * CRISPY ROCK SHRIMP - spicy aioli, chives, scallions * TERIYAKI CHEESEBURGER - wagyu beef patty, L.T.O, American cheese, pickles, special sauce Everything was excellent including the brewed coffee, espresso coffee and the cappuccino coffees Lest me not forget the bar making some pretty special libations (not me as I was the designated driver). I could have been imagining things, but the further I walked into their inviting, whimsically curated space, the harder it was to connect with my cares. I was lucky enough to receive an invite to experience dinner at Belles Beach House. Overall, I really enjoyed my meal. The food and drinks were very flavorful and expertly presented, and our server was friendly and helpful. The decor is also so cute -- you feel like you've stepped into a cabana in Hawaii! Our meal included two cocktails, an appetizer, and a main. We chose: Maui Waui Slushie (patron silver tequila, watermelon, mango, lime): I liked that it stayed Slushie-like! We actually weren't told the chicken cost extra (and it didn't say that on the menu) so the $6 charge was a bit of a surprise. But they were very flavorful, not too overly buttery, and the chicken was very tender. I got a second drink, the coconut banana espresso martini. I liked the way it tasted, but didn't love all the coconut pieces floating on top -- it felt like I was drinking orange juice with pulp. We came into Belles after visiting Kassi Beach and we loved it. The hostess was so kind and informed it would be about a 5-10 minute wait and we could go to the bar meantime. Belle's should be prepared for busy Sundays, especially when advertising World Cup games on the patio. Instead, the whole operation felt disorganized. When we arrived, the entrance was constantly blocked by the hostess and security chatting. One staff member told me to head to the bar to order, but security then acted like I was doing something wrong. A little communication between staff would go a long way. At the bar, I was skipped twice while waiting to order. When I pointed it out, the bartender told me to "hold on" while assisting a 3rd walk up after me. I asked if we could move to an open table with table service as there were many empty for ghe hour we had already been there and was told no because they were too busy. Fair enough, but that's exactly when management should be visible, coordinating staff and helping guests. Instead, when I spoke with a manager, the response was essentially that he was focused on the bar area. Good management oversees the entire operation, especially during peak periods. I was one of 5 people in our party who spent around $100 on food and drinks (apx $500 spent in total), yet the service was a mess. If it's self-service, that's fine...but make it clear and make it work. Instead, I was skipped at the bar while ordering, staff gave conflicting directions, and there was virtually no support once we had our food. We found ourselves constantly going back and forth to the bar for drinks, utensils, soy sauce, and anything else we needed. No one checked in, and getting help from staff or management was nearly impossible. The food was decent, but the customer experience wasn't. Venice Beach is always busy. This shouldn't come as a surprise. If you're going to market yourself as part of that vibrant community, you need the operational standards to match. read more

Too bad you weren't my server ;( I don't have the time to look back further to see what negative reviews Belles is trying to cover up, but that's the only assumption I can make when I see so much of the same 4-5 star reviews. But keep in mind my biggest Yelping tip: read a variety of ratings, look at the most recent pictures, and be sure you're keeping in mind everything is an ~it depends~ situation and you're only getting one side of the story. My specific experience: I was staying in the area solo on an off-season Thursday night in need of dinner. Most options in the area had already shuttered by 9pm, so Belles was it (or delivery fast food, yuck). Host was friendly enough and got me seated at the bar, something I do regularly in SF. Once seated, I looked around to realize I was a room full of early 20 year olds seemingly ramping up for a wild night. Sigh. Do LA college kids partake in Thirsty Thursday? Keep in mind if you're wanting something chill -- this particular Thursday night was not at all chill. The menu has your classics with asian/polynesian twist -- I think just about every food preference could find something to eat (plain burger to sashimi), which is a plus for families. First order of business: ordering a drink. Wait, A SLUSHY DRINK?! Yes please! Even though I was sitting at the bar attempting to make eye contact with every person (mostly bros) who stood in front of me, it took ~10 minutes and finally asking (without server's eye contact at first) "hey, can I order from you or do I need to flag down a server?" Maybe I wasn't dressed up enough in my fleece and black jeans (aka no tatas out)? Maybe I was ignored because I didn't have the pounds of makeup + fake eyelashes? Maybe they're not used to people actually sitting at/ordering from a bar seat? Maybe they're used to dealing with a different type of bird and we just don't mix? I dunno. Once I got the drink order in, my indecisive, starving brain was able to find something I knew I would enjoy -- a sushi roll. When someone (bartender?) handed over my drink, I placed the food order 'cause I was not sure when I'd have the chance again. I couldn't figure out who worked what role, and maybe they were switching some people from dinning room to bar, shifts were ending...? I dunno. These are things that happen in most restaurants, and some simple planning and communication goes a long way. Drink was more liquid, less slushy. I know slushy machines are a pain to upkeep/maintain, but maybe these were due for service? Or the person who put the mix in got the proportions off? If the quality of drink is diminished when serving, why not say "no good, want something else?" I dunno. Even so, had someone asked me if I wanted a second drink before I finished my meal, I probably would have ordered a second 'cause slushy pina coladas are hard to come by in my neck of the woods up north and some slush is better than none. Given we're on the west coast and it was mid-week, I assumed it'd be fresh fresh. It wasn't old, per se, but the portion and flavor was disappointing. Not to mention, I had to remind staff about the order... When I got my bill, it felt way too overpriced for the food and service I received. It was about $25 for my meal, including tax and tip, and I was full for the rest of the night. The Miso Black Cod ($32) was amazing--one of my favorite dishes now. You must order this! The Black Cod was so tender and flavorful, especially with the konbu chimichurri sauce. The Char Siu Pork Ribs ($26) was another favorite of mine--the ribs were incredibly tender and tasty! The Yellowtail Ponzu ($18) was great as well, and the Rock Shrimp ($16) was delicious. While there were plenty of tables open, it seemed like my party didn't match the vibe the promoter wanted so we could either wait an hour to sit outside or sit immediately inside. We went there for dinner on Friday night and it was full inside so we decided to be seated outside on a somewhat cool night but they had the heaters going to keep us nice and warm. The dinner menu didn't have a lot of variety so it's definitely geared towards providing good quality drinks with a snack/appetizer. We got the herbed steamed rice, pork dumplings, pork bao buns, salmon poke bowl. We also got a couple cocktails throughout our dinner. The cocktails were very strong so be careful if ur a lightweight like me . Everything was delicious. I really liked the bao buns since it had a lot of flavor plus a mix of crispy, soft textures. The poke bowl came with seaweed wraps so I kinda made my own sushi and it was delicious. Nice ambiance, good service, drinks and food. Good place to hang out for an evening! read more
