We decided to go to this restaurant on a Sunday. My son is a foodie and likes to try different foods and restaurants. This was our first time at this restaurant. There was a line before being seated. Our wait was like 20 minutes. Not long at all. We were seated and menus given. Our waitress was very nice. This restaurant is busy with patrons. I ordered a mushroom barley soup, it tasted good. Soon after our food arrived. My son ordered Ruben Rachel , and I ordered BLT. My son enjoyed his meal and so did I. On my way out to pay I noticed the other patrons had pickles. I approached our waitress and I said I didn't know we could ask for pickles. Our waitress, I'm sorry. I said next time. Soon after we were leaving , the kind waitress gave me a jar of pickled tomatoes and she said it was on her. That was so kind of her. This Jewish deli and restaurant has a very expansive menu. About 13 pages of menu that ranges from breakfast, lunch, and dinner options. It was crowded on a Sunday morning. At the entrance, you find the cashier register, display of rugelach, dessert, smoked fish. The dining area is on the left, mostly booths. Our waitress was attentive and kept on checking our table. A small plate of pickles was served on the table right away. The pickles consisted of two different kinds of small cucumbers. One kind is more pickled, the other kind that I tried looked more of a cucumber, very crunchy and juicy. I picked salmon with plum and sesame entree that came with 2 veggies and a soup or salad. The waitress told me a long list of veggie choices that I couldn't remember all of them. I chose broccoli and carrot. Salmon was decent, the sauce was a bit sweeter than I expected with about 3 slices of canned mandarin. I barely tasted the sesame. The baby carrots also had sweet sauce on it. We asked for challah bread. The waitress gave us a couple thin slices of challah and rye bread. Challah was very soft and fresh. French fries was crispy and seemed like it was not frozen. read more

Pains me to not give 5 stars and was generous with 3 stars. I mean Ben and Irv's has been our go to place for trays, deli, brunch, breakfast, lunch, etc. forever, and ever. Over the holidays we ordered 2 trays for two different occasions. They are pricy and look nice but both trays were not as good as we remember. Too much mayo on the potato salad, bread was not fresh, forget the pastrami altogether as it was more fat than meat.. quite disgusting. Our first tray was the salad trio...that was better than the deli tray. However, the salads were bland in flavor...and the breads did not taste fresh with that either. I was sorry I ordered the deli tray as it was not a "wow" for our new years eve party. Several guest suggested we call Ben and Irv's to let them know the pastrami was a pile of fat. Pretty sad to hear that from your guest...especially since we paid attention to every detail making a perfect night for our party. We called the next day and we did get to swap out for corn beef. Didn't help us for the party but appreciated the swap. We now need a new place to get our trays as we don't want underwhelming food and bread that tasted like day old bread anymore. I've been hearing about Ben & Irv's for many years and finally had the opportunity to stop by for lunch. Along with the sticker shock over the price for grabbing a quick sandwich for my lunch to-go, the negatives are: I ordered a turkey and cheese, but there was no cheese on my sandwich, the lettuce had some withered, brown edges and I had to throw some of it away, and last but not least, I found a hair in the sandwich, unfortunately. The positive is that there was enough turkey for two sandwiches, so at least the $17.05 that it cost makes it more affordable if you get two lunches from the purchase. I just didn't want to eat anymore of it after finding the hair. I don't know if I will ever go back there, as I was really disappointed after all the hype. read more

When I was a kid my parents jokingly told me "Never eat anything bigger than your head" - well glad we didn't come here when I was young! This is a typical New York City-type deli where one sandwich is bigger than the next. Looking around at other tables it was almost funny to see the size of all the different offerings. The menu is also gigantic running from Breakfast thru Lunch items. The Corned Beef Special was very large as well as very good. The Reuben, served open faced, was gigantic (although not very photogenic!) and delicious. There was enough to bring home half of each. Delicious Pickles were served along side the sandwiches. We got one of the last tables on a Monday at around 12:30. If you want to take home additional items, when you're seated there is a 1 page checkoff list to give to your server so that when you go to the cashier your take home order is ready to go. My wife and I conducted a blind rye bread tasting. Five ryes competed for bragging rights. How does one conduct a "blind" tasting. My wife took a slice of bread from each deli and numbered them 1-5. Only my wife was aware of the mapping of the deli to the numbers. I then returned to the room and my wife stepped away. I made the sandwiches and then converted the numbers to letters. #1 becomes letter C, #2 becomes letter A, etc. The mapping of numbers to letters was only known by me. Below are the results in order of worst to best. #5 Original South Philly Jewish Rye (available at Giant Food Markets) cost $6 for a full loaf. This was our least favorite. No flavor and the texture was completely off. The bread was very dry, almost stale. If you are short on time (and money), this will work but my recommendation is head to a deli and get some real NY Jewish Rye. #4 Ben & Irv's Deli in Southamptom cost $5.50 for a half loaf. The texture gets us closer to a true deli rye bread but still dry and light on flavor. #3 Moish and Itzy's in Newtown cost $6.00 for a half loaf. The crust is chewy as it should be and tasted great. The inside is a bit on the dry side. This was just a hair behind the #2 spot. Candidly I would rank this higher but my wife found the dryness unacceptable and I never win an argument with her. #2 Borscht Belt in Newtown cost $10 for a half loaf. This is a softer texture if that is your thing. My wife liked the texture but I like a chewier crust and heartier bread. I don't know that this bread will hold up to a mound of meat or wet toppings. The flavor was terrific. If you don't mind spending $10 for a half loaf of bread, then give it a try. I'm saving for retirement so probably won't return anytime soon. #1 [Top Spot] Manny's Famous Deli in Holland cost $4.50 for a half loaf. Winner winner chicken dinner. This is the fan favorite and a must try for anyone that values a good bread. Manny's offers the gold standard of ryes and at a price that leaves enough money to also buy a deli pickle. Longstanding Jewish Deli Staple. One of the few places that have been around since my childhood and still has some great quality Jewish fixings. Some of my favorite items from here are the Matzo Ball Soup with noodles, Jumbo whitefish on a bagel, Lox on a bagel, and of course Smoked Salmon on a Bagel (If you have not tried Smoked Salmon on a bagel you have truly never lived). Came here with the Girlfriend Saturday morning and ordered an omelet with sausage, bacon, mushrooms, onions, peppers. This dish comes with fried hash browns and choice of bread, highly recommend rye bread as I believe it is a very overlooked bread to make egg sandwiches in the morning and other great deli meats to build your sandwich on. Do not expect a five star upscale dining experience but rather a diner that knows how to make a dam fine breakfast and has quality Jewish pickles. They also have desserts to go that are nothing to balk at. I can recommend the chocolate chip muffins, they been making them for decades and still haven't gone downhill in flavor or yumminess. Let me start by saying, I have contributed to this food business for many years and WAS satisfied. Past owners until most recent, we're dedicated to their business and food preparation. Now I know their will be critics and disagreement. But, remember this is my experiences. I have ordered and eaten in at times. However, I have lessened my time. The food is not as good as it used to be. The prep part of an order, has skimmed on toppings. The cases where the food is and desserts, need to be cleaned. Plus, I would think the deli area would have covers on the food. What made me go back is because I was given a credit approx 2 weeks ago on a takeout order that was wrong. When I got to my destination and opened up the bag, I got an order that I have not ordered. Now, I had waited awhile for the order to be done. The girl (dark hair) at the register who has been with this company for a long time, cashed me out and apologized for the wait. Plus, the worker brought the order up and apologized. Fine, things happen! While at my destination, I called back to say my order was incorrect. She apologized and said she could give me a credit. Went in to pick up my order and told the girl (I presume one of the owners), white blonde hair (usually there), serious look all the time, that i have a credit. Asked me what the credit was for. There was nothing stating about this credit when she looked. I described briefly the girl whom I spoke to and even said, their was a man with dark hair and glasses, she said she did not know. Hmm, You don't know your employees? It was like In somewhat of a nice way, she did not believe me, but, did not say it. Customer service etiquette needs to be practiced. With all this being said, what i ordered from the credit, the food purchased had little to almost nothing of toppings. Prices go up and quality goes down. read more

4.5 stars. This was our first time out here and it was great. I ordered a massive pastrami and Swiss, which was delicious. Bonus points for including a second layer of cheese in the middle. My wife got the stack-- corned beef and pastrami piled high with cole slaw, Russian dressing and served on latkes. Also a huge dish-- we both have healthy appetites and we brought him more than enough for dinner. Service was fantastic. Everyone was so friendly. I arrived five minutes before my dining partner did. There were NO people waiting to sit and TONS of empty tables in the dining room. When the host became aware that my party was not complete, he refused to seat me and rather had me wait in the deli portion of the store. I asked why I couldn't sit and he rudely asked me have you ever worked in the industry?? It''s out of respect to the servers!! I HAVE worked in the industry. I would never speak to a customer the way you spoke to me. I can see if the tables were filled, and you had a line of people waiting to be seated, but there was a full 30% of the tables empty and no one in line. You want me to respect the servers? I do by being kind and tipping well. How about you respect customers who come to spend their hard earned money for your barely adequate food?!? read more
