I have gone to Buena Pet Clinic for many years with all my dogs. Sadly a short time ago I had to have my dog euthanized after the vet found he had a cancerous tumor filling his abdomen. Dr. Connolly was very patient and kind after the exam and helped me make the right decision. She remained with me and my daughter while we put Beau to sleep. The entire staff were very professional and even sent us a signed sympathy card. They took care of Beau's cremation and I received them in a beautiful box with his name on it. They showed us great kindness and understanding going through a difficult time. I will continue to use them when I get another dog. read more

Been going to this vet for 25 years and it has gotten so I can no longer recommend this place. Use to be so caring and compassionate, but no more. Simply asking for a phone number preference causes an issue?! Having a vet tell you to come in and then he isn't even there with no guidance or communication to the staff? Even having a debate on how much my dog weighs having an incorrect weight is life threatening, but didn't want to believe me. This was just today and there has been so many more things. Her exam was so complete she felt a metal piece that had broken off along the incision that had been used when my baby girl had been neutered years before by the adoption agency . I called to see if they would be accepting any new clients for my puppy who saw them recently since she's still with her fur mom at the moment. The girl on the phone quickly shot me down so fast I couldn't even complete my sentence saying we don't take new clients since we see so many breeders. There is absolutely no reason to be so rude with someone who is just trying to find the best possible care for their new furry family members. I love this place! They've been incredible with my three dogs. The staff is always friendly, the vets are knowledgeable, the front desk always gives out treats and are very nice on the phones as well. The place is also extremely clean. I will continue using this vet as long as I live in Tucson! My small dog was attacked by another dog and we brought her in to Buena Pet Clinic with the hopes that we might be able to save her. The clinic manager and veterinarian on duty were amazing humans. They let me sit in a room, gave me my options and gave my sweet Millie the best medical care. They were compassionate, realistic and got her through the first round of surgery- for which I will be forever grateful for. Sadly, my little one didn't make, but this clinic is honest and they even refunded a portion of my bill due to the fact that certain testing wasn't necessary anymore. I want all pet lovers to know that this clinic gives great care, with compassion and transparency. I would recommend them to anyone. read more

This place has gone down the hill and it just isn't the same anymore as it used to be. They will add charges to your bill and if you don't pay attention or don't ask what it's for....they will get away with it. They did it to me twice and i caught it, they apologized and corrected it but still not an excuse! My cat had to stay there overnight twice and BOTH times he came home with an eye infection...... Last time I was picking my cat up from there, the vet assistant/ tech, not sure which one she is, brought him back with urine and feces on his hind legs and dirty litter all over his belly and legs, my cat smelled so badly like poop Needles to say that I got very upset and brought it to her attention and not only did she NOT bother to apologize she was annoyed and mad. Dr. Nightengale came in and apologized for her behavior and took my cat back and cleaned him up. Sure enough, my cat got an eye infection, they charged for cannel and "ward"..... services and yet allowed my cat to lay in his feces and urine! I called and let them know, so Dr. Nightengale told me to bring my cat in so he could treat the eye and he didn't charge me for the office visit but they charged me for the antibiotics that I had to buy to treat the eye infection that occurred while in their care..... I don't feel comfortable taking my cat to there office anymore since this last incident. read more

I took my sick 6 month old due to stomach issues she has been having off and on for 2 weeks or so. I called on the weekend and was triaged. BUT I was woken up to my puppy throwing up several times in the wee hours of the morning so I decided I need to have her be seen asap! I called the Pet ER and an other clinics But I decided she need to be seen where she had her 1st physical and shots but I was worried they would not take her in without an appointment. I showed up 5 minutes prior to opening and I was told they had an opening at 9:15am. I chose to wait well because what's an hour right? Well the techs came out and greet her with hugs and kisses every time and she likes the attention. So then we were called back immediately and we were out with our medications within 45 minutes! I have to admit that I read the past reviews and that is the reason I was hesitant on going there but I am very pleased with the treatment of my puppy and how detailed the doctor was with the information he gave me. We took our 2 year old do to have her spayed and she almost died. They cut her open only to realize she was not completely out. They had to restrain her then she was given to much anesthesia and in the midst of the mess much to their surprise they had no oxygen. The dog was sutured up without being spayed and we are called and told her pupils are dilated, she is unresponsive and probably won't make it. MAYBE CHECK OUT YOUR EQUIPMENT BEFORE EACH SURGERY. When my parents were alive they took their dogs to Buena Pet Clinic for decades. I have too ever since I have become an adult (I'm 58) with my own dogs. They are THE BEST. They assess, evaluate and treat with enormous knowledge and compassion. I love the only 2 doctors my dogs have seen there and all of the staff. I won't take my dogs anywhere else. Dr. Karnes and his staff have taken wonderful care of Jackson. He was pretty sick with liver & gallbladder issues and he took plenty of time with me and my dog to thoroughly check and evaluate him on all levels. He even did a diagnostic X-ray free of charge. Him and his staff are always upfront about costs and provide estimates before administering treatment. He really goes above and beyond and truly cares about his patients. I'm always able to get an appointment and Dr. Karnes calls me personally with lab results or to answer any questions I have about the care of my dog. The is the worse vet clinic in Tucson. They forgot to turn on the anesthesia so my dog yelped when they cut her open and she was wide awake. Then once they turned it on they gave her to much and didn't give her oxygen. So needless to say she almost didn't make it. After they made this mistake they didn't even spay her or remove the cactus from her tongue they just closed her up. And wanted to collect 400 dollars. read more

I've never seen a vet that cares more or is more knowledgeable about a pet in my life. The entire staff is very knowledgeable and caring. I brought my kittens in just for shots and they spent almost an hour with us, giving each one a checkup, helping us trim their nails, and really setting the standard for a caring vet. One night when I was at work, my cat scratched her eye. My gf discovered it and was freaking out. We woke up early the next morning and arrived at the vet (without an appointment) just after they opened. The Dr. was able to fit us in with minimal waiting time (maybe 30 min tops). They took good care of her, inspected her eye, and gave us an antibotitic to fix it. I wish my human doctor was half as good as the staff at Buena Pet Clinic. read more

I have visited Buena Pet Clinic about 15 times for routine shots, infections, check-ups, and surgery. They offer a wide range of appointment availability and I'm always able to make one at my desired time. I spend at most 5 minutes in the waiting area. I deducted one star from the overall rating because of discrepancy among the doctors in regard to the timeline of required shots and varying opinions about treatment. That being said, I prefer Dr. Halbach but I haven't been seen by Dr. Nightengale. I trust their referrals since I was recommended to a dermatologist with whom I had a good experience. Overall, I find the office staff, technicians, and doctors to be friendly, professional, and knowledgeable. Although I haven't been to another clinic to make a comparison, I recommend Buena Pet Clinic read more

This pet clinic is a little pricier than some but we have taken now 3rd generation pets there. They were caring and speedy getting them in and the dr. Cares about your pets. They are clean and a good business. Our German shepherd went there for 18 years, but she is with us no longer but the other two dogs go there now. read more

I want to like Buena. The front office was helpful, Dr. Karnes was kind and quick. It wasn't the experience there but what happened after. My dog was treated for a bacterial infection. Dr. Karnes said "it's a large dose but since he's so big it'll be fine" I wasn't given any information on side effects or anything to be aware of. I went out of town and got a call from my friend who was pet sitting him that he wasn't able to walk and was disoriented so she took him to an emergency vet clinic. They thought it was wobblers disease which is an issue in Great Danes with their vertebrae and affects their neurological system. They ran blood work to rule out meningitis and called the neurologist in. Turns out it was toxicity -- essentially an overdose of antibiotics and his central nervous system was shutting down. He wasn't able to walk, control his legs or muscles, had a seizure, and one of his kidneys was also performing higher than it should have due to overworking and the medicine. I had to get him hooked up on IVs for two days to flush out his system. I called Dr. Karnes after and told him what happened. He was extremely apologetic and said in retrospect he wouldn't have prescribed such a high dose and would have told me what to look out for. I then talked to the manager to try to get my emergency bill taken care of since no side effects were shared with me and had the vet not been negligent in that step, this entire situation could have been avoided. Had I known possible side effects I could have noticed small signs and stopped the medicine on day 3. She said "you're right we should have shared that and should be better about it and think it could have been avoided but are not in the business of reimbursing emergency bills" I want to be clear in that Dr. Karnes acknowledged what went wrong and that side effects should have been shared and my dog did have a very bad reaction to the drug. I'm disappointed with the "business" side of the practice. I'm in the process of filing a claim with the BBB and the Arizona board of veterinarians and a small claims suit. Make your own decisions but there are enough veterinarians in Tucson to never have to deal with this business. Yesterday, and I really don't want to criticize Dr. Nightingale as he has been our vet for 35 years....Our dog went to get her teeth cleaned. They put her to sleep, half way through, she went into cardiac arrest. They stopped, and gave her oxygen. Dr. Nightingale personally transferred our dog to a 24 hour emergency care center. Today, she still isn't awake. She will be transferred to River and Ina to see if she has any brain activity after her plasma transfer tonight. This is one of the most heart breaking moments of our lives. I know Dr. Nightingale feels the same way. We need to check the formula that these VET TECH's are using to put our dogs under. I believe and know they maybe using to much. Please let's investigate this. Thank you. read more

I took my dog in to be seen because she was lethargic. She was seen by Dr. Collins who took a scan that showed an infection. I asked for Dr. Haulbach to see her and he came in and said she needed to stay overnight with fluids and antibiotics, that he would operate first thing in the morning. The next morning I was called by him saying when he got in she was dead. I do not know what she died of or what happened. He said that they could have her cremated. I had never been faced with this before and agreed to let them do it. Then the following day, I called the office because I decided I wanted her cremated sooner and privately. They said my girl was still there. I sent an email to the office manager asking them to not cremate my girl. I did not realize that they had included the cremation fee in the bill I paid the day my girl died. When I arrived there on Monday morning, I was informed by the office manager that my girl was picked up on Friday by her friend who picks up the dogs for cremation. I asked where the dog was taken and she refused to tell me. I asked to talk to Dr. Haulbach and Nightengale and was refused. The office manager was abusive with me because I insisted to know about the cremation, she shouted at me and hung up the phone. I called back and was again hung up on by the front desk. I was hysterical and a nervous wreck! I could not get the answers about my dog that I was entitled to. I had previously scheduled surgical appointments with Dr. Haulbach, for spaying my other females. When I called to change those appointments, the office manager indignantly told me to come and get my girls ashes and medical records for my dogs. They did not want to work with me. There you go. After 10 years. The office manager is nothing short of trouble and if you have to have a discussion with one of the doctors there, forget it. I am certain that the doctors there only have her side of the story. I do not know how my dog died alone there overnight. Who knows if the staff did there job and if the death could have been avoided. I will never know now. read more

I took my 3 month old puppy to this clinic after referral from animal kingdom. This was her first visit to a vet. She is a beautiful English shepherd puppy and was per usual a little uneasy being her first visit to the vet. We were treated by doctor Nightingale and my puppy had a mild harmless growl. This vet randomly, hostilely grabbed my puppy up by the neck and proceeded to yell at her saying she was behaving badly. This was not only traumatizing to my puppy and my self but to my daughter who had to witness this man handling my new dog so unnecessarily rough. She has had 0 behavior issues thus far and I am 100% sure this was unnecessary maltreatment of my dog. I will absolutely never take my dog back here to this vet. Perhaps the doctor needs to chakra balance and eat a snickers prior to starting your work day. read more

I was referred to Buena Pet Clinic from the store in which I bought my 4 month old Boston Terrier. I took him to Buena to get his final round of shots & a quick check up within the first week I purchased my puppy. Everyone was so helpful & nice continually throughout the process but a major issue arose with my pet once I had left the clinic. The vet provided me with raw hide bones. Despite all the terrors I had heard about raw hide & had told the vet everything terrible I had heard she went on to tell me how good the bone is for him, it is part of his natural instinct to want to chew this bone, & she had never seen a dog have a reaction from raw hide. Well, a few days later my dog begin to have bloody stools & diarrhea. I took him in, & Dr. Halbach informed me had colitis. He sent me home & I began to treat the colitis as instructed. Days went on & my dog was not drinking water, producing stool, but rapidly losing weight from his strict diet. He began vomiting three days later & becoming very ill. I brought him in for the third time & I was informed he had a bowel obstruction & possibly needed surgery to remove what was stuck inside. He was provided with Barium to coat his intestine & return the next day to have x-rays to see what was inside. The doctor contacted me throughout the day that he had pooped & what was inside seemed to be coming out through his stool. Dr. Nightengale was now taking care of him & he told me it looked to be like little white seeds. I asked them to hold the poop for me so I could take a look since I could not possibly think of what it could be & would obviously like to prevent the situation again. Once I received the poop & took it apart, I immediately recognized the substance... THE BONE. You could clearly identify this was the bone & was not surprised the substance was "not recognized" by the doctors considering the fact they sell those bones. The bone that the vet had given me had caused a bowel obstruction $500 later. I would love to be able to trust my vet to provide him with things that will keep him healthy & safe...not cause a bowel obstruction. Each doctor was so helpful especially Dr. Nigtengale & Halfback. The female vet I saw that gave him this bone was also so kind, but I am very angry that this was caused BY the vet & came out of my pocket. Do not take bones from Buena, or any "free" sample they may give you. They will convince you they are safe, when they are indeed not. read more

DO NOT TAKE YOUR ANIMAL HERE. I recently had my 10 month old puppy spayed and 4 days later she was checked into the emergency clinic with acute kidney failure. Acute kidney failure happens from surgery when a vet doesn't monitor blood pressure or does not supply adequate fluids during a procedure. Both are BASIC elements of surgery and what happened to my puppy should not have happened!! Not only did they damage her kidneys, they also did internal bruising. They also used steel stitches and told me they would dissolve. My puppy, if she recovers, is looking at a shortened life span and a higher cost of care. All because of their carelessness during a spay procedure! PLEASE do not take your animals to this clinic! read more
