This is my favorite Thai food restaurant in Humboldt County. It may actually be my favorite Thai food restaurant anywhere. The food is fresh and made to order. I love that they offer every dish in a wide range of spice level from no spice to Thai spicy. The only problem is trying to decide what to order from the large selection of delicious entrees. They are a bit pricey, but the food is the most authentic you'll be able to find up here. Their Pad Thai in particular is superb. What truly makes this place stand out is the atmosphere. Great (for Arcata) service, terrible food. The flat rice noodles were so overcooked they turned into a pile of broken mush when pan fried. There were no noodle bits on the plate longer than half an inch. Some clumps of noodle bits were not coated in sauce, others had thin pad thai noodles and burnt peanuts mixed in (I ordered the Pad See Ew; no peanuts or thin noodles are supposed to be in that dish), suggesting that what was on the plate included stove scraps from previously prepared dishes. Very greasy, broken and burnt sauce, cooked unevenly, the most offensive plate I've been served at a restaurant - 1/10 The ricepaper-wrapped Mango Crab Salad rolls were plated only partially wrapped (falling apart and resembling a pile of heavily sauced salad), and mostly filed with lettuce. Very sweet sauce, only flecks of crab meat, poor presentation - 2/10 20 minutes after ordering, the kitchen let us know they were unable to prepare the main ingredient of an entree we ordered from the Specials Menu. Four groups who ordered after us were served and nearly finished their meals before we saw our sad dishes. Our water was refilled consistently by the server, and the decor was nice. read more

I'd actually give this place 4.5 stars, all the dishes were good a couple were even great. The most disappointing of all was their Pad Thai , the signature dish for any self respecting Thai eatery. Not sure what was off, if it was the fish sauce or no lime but it did not have that subtle flavorful synergy that the best Pads do. I had a special yellow curry with duck, very good but pricey. We had a combination of other currys some veggie , chicken and steak dishes, moo vampire . All were tasty and enough to share family style. They can accommodate all levels of spice heat, Thai spicy is plenty for most folks. It's a husband wife team that runs it. Average cost is about $ 25- 30 per person. Have not tried any other Thai food in this area but this compares well to what you'd find in the Bay Area. Seating is limited to about 40 or so people. The space is clean and simply decorated. A terrible experience, one of the only places I actively avoid after trying. None of the food really left an impression yet cost close to or more than $15 each. The Tom Kha was OK but only saved from being the worst I've had due to a terrible one I ate in Sacramento that was all lemon. I can't even remember what else I ordered, it was so forgettable. Turned to yelp when it was time to make our dinner selection and we were famished after a long day of driving. The restaurant is small and we ordered food to go. The waitresses were really nice and they told us half an hour, which was understandable since it was dinner time on a Saturday night. Well, it took longer than 30 minutes. More like 45. But again they were nice and explained that there was new staff in the kitchen. Onto the important part- the food! In order from least favorite to most. The pandan wrapped chicken was hard and dry and lacked flavor- skip it unless you like jabby, hard chunks of chicken. The potato puffs were really sweet, but not bad. For our entrees we ordered noodles. My friend and I are both noodle people, like desert-island-you-can-only-have-one-food-for- the-rest-of-your-life noodle people. So we got both the drunken noodles (my usual Thai order) and long charm noodles. Quick note, in both dishes the noodles seemed a little softer than usual, which isn't necessarily bad, just unexpected. The drunken noodles were good, although spicier than we wanted. The long charm noodles were the best! Garlicky and we'll seasoned- the Sriracha (home made?) was fantastic and really helped balance the dish. I wanted to take my friend out to a nice Thai place but what a disappointment this place was. The service was so slow and the server were rude. We did not get our food for a long time while people who came after us got their food before we did. The fried rice was over cooked and the Pad See Ew was chard and salty. We will not be back to this. I also forgot to mention that they toke forever to get my friend's order and her food came before the rest of ares. I don't know what their problem is with us. Hands down the best Thai food I have ever had, and I eat a lot of Thai food! The food was so fresh and flavorful! Even their water was on point! I think they infuse it with different citrus and either basil or mint :) For an appetizer we got the fresh spring rolls with tofu....bomb! So fresh and perfect with the peanut sauce! We also ordered green curry and Chicken Laab. The Laab was different than any that ive seen. It had fresh carrot shreds, tomatoes, cilantro and cabbage. I dont eat meat but it looked delicious and my wife said it was the best shes had (she orders Laab at every Thai place)! I do not recommend this place for take-out. It is over-priced, the portions are small and it can be an exceptionally long wait. Unfortunately it was a Monday, I really wanted curry and Pho-hoang was closed, so I popped over to Bencharong to place an take-out order for two bowls of curry. The gentleman said it would be about half an hour, okay, I can wait that long. I went home and waited for the call from the restaurant, after 45 minutes, still no call, so I went back to the restaurant. Food was still not ready, now I am starving, it has been nearly an hour. Okay, food is ready, pay the bill, $34 for two bowls of curry! Okay, go home, pop open the bags and find two small (16oz) containers with curry in them, a few pieces of tough, flavorless beef and two boxes of rice. I should have gone to the store and made myself dinner. The Food: The Green Curry was more flavorful than the Red Curry, spicy, but nothing exceptional. I have eaten at Bencharong several times in the past and the food and service, when seated at the restaurant, was a good experience. If it is a date night or a event the sticker-shock of the price is more palatable, and the presentation of the food actually looks appetizing verses being crammed into a tiny box. Recommendation: Dine in the restaurant, do not order take-out. To the restaurant: if the kitchen is slammed and take-out orders are going to exceed 30+ minutes say, "we're sorry, our small kitchen cannot accommodate the extra take-out orders tonight." read more

Very authentic, Perfect Dishes, I've been there twice in the past 2 days and Tried the Pad Thai and the Massaman Curry and it was absolutely fantastic, nice atmosphere, and it's really nice to have such a great place with a friendly staff in Arcata. I enjoyed the Iced coffee and the ThaI Iced Tea as well, both very good, it's a well thought out menu, and hands down best new restaurant in Humboldt. I have been here three times so far and have loved every bite. The service is great: friendly and knowledgeable. The ambiance is very nice; it's rather romantic, but not so much that it feels weird to go with a friend. Some of my favorites so far are the Bencharong fresh rolls, the Singapore noodles and the Moo Vampire made spicy. Don't let the drab exterior fool you. If you love spicy, flavorful food in a lovely setting, Bencharong is a terrific choice. For Thai food in Humboldt, THIS IS THE BEST!!! She is authentic as they come and her food is fresh, flavorful and FANTASTIC! Note: if you order medium, watch out, this is Thai medium! Also, the portions are never quite the same. Some nights we get a plate full of calamari in the appetizer and sometimes its just a few pieces. Same with the beef barbecue. Sometimes is a great portion and sometimes its tiny. I usually get long charm noodles with extra lettuce, pickled cabbage and the sauce from the beef bbq instead of siracha! SOOOO GOOOOOD!!! Its one of the only places around here that uses high quality fresh oil for cooking too, I never get an upset stomach from this place and I am very sensitive to oil, gluten and dairy! We always take our friends from out of town here as its classy and you can dress up or come in casual. The check is never more than $100 for 4 people including tip! It can be a VERY long wait for your food but its not fast food, so talk, laugh, enjoy your dinner company instead of stuffing your face within 15 minutes and leaving. read more

An intimate little Thai restaurant located in Arcata's strip mall a little hidden but close to Safeway. The first time I went, I was part of a large party and usually that isn't always the best bay to get introduced to a new place but they handled our table beautifully and everything they put on our table was flavorful, delicious and hot (as in, not cold, or sitting around to be served). I've been back twice since with my husband and we've left happy each time. Food is unique and made with love and attention. The cooks know what thai cuisine is. Great to have his little gem in Arcata. Some things to try is the drunken noodles, the lettuce wraps, rolls, they give you a huge glass of Thai ice tea if you're in the mood...I can go on and on, but I'll let you discover on your own! Small place near Safeway/ CVS that has been many different restaurants over the years. This is one of the better ones. Gracious and appreciative host was welcoming. Ambiance pleasant and presentation of food was attractive. Only a few tables so it can fill up at dinner. My kids picked out a kind of sweet and sour dish that I was dreading but it was quite nice as it balanced the pineapple with fresh tomato and cucumber flavors. The Pad Thai was decent (a bit too sweet) and the Gaeng Panang was super. Tom Ka Gai soup was good but not as complex as some Thai restaurants serve. Service attentive but a bit slow: could be working out operational details still. Overall, a pleasant addition to the Arcata restaurant scene. I think this place is slightly overpriced but not excessively. My family of four ordered 3 entrees, one bowl of soup, one Thai iced tea and an extra sticky rice. Total with tip was $53 2015 Update: The restaurant is still around and seems as popular as ever. Packed tonight on a Sunday night. We had almost the same items as last time but now the total with tip is in the $70's. It's officially overpriced in my book and service was slow and odd at times. I mean, if we say "We can order now" why would they walk away and return 5 minutes later? If people are waiting for tables and we're done eating (and sitting for some time), why is the waitress folding napkins and not clearing the table? I am not sure if this really is a Thai place. The food did not seem authentic Thai to me at all. It seemed more like a mix of Indian Chinese and Asian Fusion. I had a Garlic based stir fried Chicken and Bean dish with brown rice. The food was decent but not great. I dont really have any solid comments. Just that there was not enough effort in the preparation. And there was a tonne of chilli sauce floating on top of the gravy. Coming from San Francisco, this place did not really impress me. After a long day exploring the coast, we stopped here for dinner. We live in LA where Thai food abounds so we were hoping for an equally good meal here. And we were not disappointed! We had four entrees - each delicious and fresh tasting. The red panang curry was especially good, as was the padd himaparn. This is an excellent Thai restaurant and my husband and I drive up from Eureka every time when we want Thai food. It is absolutely the best Thai restaurant in the area. We particularly enjoy the spring rolls which are filled with different vegetables and your choice of protein (we like shrimp as they are plump and delicious) and the curries. I love the green curry (with chicken) and my partner likes the red (with tofu). We also enjoy the pineapple fried rice and drunken noodles - but everything is terrific! The Thai iced tea is just the best ever, but they keep your water glasses with cucumber or lemon water filled so you can go with just that! There is also an excellent bar with Thai beers and amazing cocktails, like the mojito. You absolutely can not go wrong eating here and I guarantee you will enjoy whatever you get.
