We moved to Benicia in 2019 and needed to find a vet for additional vaccinations for our Addison (SF house cat about to touch paws to grass for the first time). We noticed the Cat Clinic so close to our house. What a find. The staff is always friendly, helpful, and the atmosphere is calm. Cat zen is undisputed by dogs. Dr. Rau is amazing. She takes her time, is empathetic and very knowledgeable. Sadly Addison passed away last year. The clinic helped us ease his suffering and handled everything with care. Our current kittens, Zora and Valentino are getting the best of care and garden time. I don't think I could recommend a veterinarian more. read more

It was during covid my senior cat was walking funny and her eyes were dilated weird. I went to the BCC and right away the doctor wanted to do a bunch of test, no estaminet, She did no physical exam , just wanted $2000 dollars up front, "We were in coved shut down" I could make payments but "NO" I walked out! today 4 years later I come to find out that if the doctor would have had any training at all she would have known that the strange dilated eyes showed that the cat was in a lot of PAIN. if she would have done a physical exam of the cat she would have noticed that the left leg on the lower part of her leg had "NO" and I mean "NO" mussel. the mussel had been severed somehow, as if her Achilles tendon had been severed. BUT you have to pay attention and know what you are doing to know that The doctor should have know that right away! No excuses!" both the eyes and the walking funny should have told her that let alone feeling the leg, heck even if she would have looked at her she would have seen that something was wrong ALL the test in the world would not have shown that the mussel was gone, only a X-ray . that should have been the second thing she did. first being the exam! You only have a few days if not hours to fix a severed mussel. by the time she did the test it would have been to late Just think of all the money that BCC could have made if they really knew what they were doing! I don't understand why anyone would take there cat to this clinic! the rude receptionist should be the first clue. I would never recommend these peoples. And yes, it's very inconvenient that your website says you accept néw clients since several months ago, but whenever I call you tell me you don't accept néw clients and that your schedule is 2 months out. I say I'm okay with that because my appointment isn't for urgent care but just wellness check. Still she's not having it and asked me what should she do if she only answers the phone. I get it. I answer the phone for a living too. Difference is, I went through customer service and phone etiquette trainings which you clearly missed. And to conclude that phone call..girl rudely hung up on me. We have been coming here for about 3 years now. The staff is great, always friendly and accommodating. They have gotten us in last minute on more than one occasion. We had both our kittens neutered there with no problems. The Dr. is very kind and empathetic and has a great bedside manner. The prices are reasonable and I have never felt like we paid for services or tests that were not necessary. They have good COVID protocol and only allow one patient in the waiting room at a time. They send a text and call to remind you of your appointment. I highly recommend them. read more

I love this place, Dr. Rau is so warm and welcoming. I was surprised one of my cats did not hiss at her and she usually does to vets. The Dr. has seen all my three cats and she spayed and neuter two of them, they healed right away without any complications. I always feel safe taking them there since there are no other kinds of animals, it is a place where cats feel safe due to the fact that there are no dogs barking. It is a little pricey but when you love your pets as your children price is no problem for the quality service. I just had my cat Dazie at Benicia Cat Clinic. This is the only cat clinic or veterinary office I've taken my cats to in the last 30 years.. i'd like to give Dr. Rau 5 stars for her services.. Two stars for the staff .. I was running a few minutes late with my new cat and called the office to let them know that I'd be possibly five minutes late to my appointment.. I was told that I'll probably lose my appointment for being late even if it's only five minutes. I go into the office and ask the receptionist I believe her name is Amanda about our appointment did we still have one or was it lost, she was very unfriendly rolling her eyes acting very put off when I was asking simple questions, she said somebody has already taken my appointment and I was to go sit and wait until they could see my cat, possibility that will have to reschedule. how could someone have my appointment if I have an appointment at 3:50 and I get there at 3:55 someone's already in my appointment time.. she was very unwelcoming very negative very interruptive didn't let me finish a sentence I was chastised and when I asked her to stop chastising me for being five minutes late this is what she said to me "oh I guess you're the victim" and walked away! I love the vet who has been caring for my pets but I cannot take this abuse from the front desk staff!! If you want to take your cat to a Capitalist type Veterinarian who is only in the business for monetary gain you should go to Benicia cat clinic. We have a 10+ year old cat who was prescribed Clavamox for multiple ailments she was and is now again suffering from, the worst of which is and unexplainable ooze leaking from her ear. She has since ran out of the medicine and we wanted to refill it. This vet is refusing to refill it without us paying to take her in from another exam. In other words she wants another $75 fee before she will allow us to get the same medicine for our sick animal. She refused to do a phone consultation and said her only availability was two weeks out. I never thought about the systemic greed in our country's healthcare system extending to animals, but apparently it does. Thank you for for your display of Capitalism Benicia Cat Clinic, very patriotic of you. We have an appointment with another vet tomorrow already and have to drive out of town because you refuse to refill a prescription without your exam fee! read more

We have been bringing our Fur babies to the Benicia Cat clinic for years. First "Baby" a rescue farm cat and now "Neko" a pretty little Japanese Bobtail. Dr Rau , to me, is the perfect combination of kindness and professionalism. She is obviously well trained and capable. Her examinations are very meticulous. Toward the end of Baby's life we had to see Dr Rau very often and she was always available to us, either by phone or in patient visits. When finally there was no more hope for recovery ( Baby was 18) she helped us make the decision. Now she takes wonderful care of Neko our little mischievous troublemaker. If you are looking for a competent well trained feline vet who both knows her stuff and hasn't lost her compassion, Dr Rau is your gal. Hands down, the best kitty Dr around. read more

I didn't have the pleasure of visiting this place but it is still 5 stars! Hear me out! My tuxie cat was limping on a Sat (Aug 3rd) late morning. When I called out to him, instead of running towards me like he usually does, he just froze and stood still. I panicked. Cancelled my eye appointment and started the frantic search of looking for a vet. We moved to the Bay Area from LA and had still to find a vet for our cats. Looked on Yelp and this place came up. So I called them. The woman that picked up was super polite and friendly. She informed me that there was one person before me and if I could hold. After a minute she comes back on the line. She informs me, regretfully, that they are all booked for Sat and they close early. She then gave me a list of places that she would recommend and who are open later on the weekends including Sundays. She even asked if I needed phone numbers. Because of her I was able to get my cat in to Animal Clinic of Benicia who I also highly recommend. I do hope that the management or owner sees this and lets that staff person (who was working the phones on Aug 3rd morning around 11am) know that she provided stellar customer service. read more

I'm really bummed out about my experience with Benicia Cat Clinic today, I've been going here for years and never had any issues. Today I had an appointment scheduled and 4mins passed the appt time the receptionist called to see if I was still coming. I let her know I was assisting my elderly cat into his carrier and was on the way (I live literally 3mins away). I understand people arriving late to appts is frustrating but why even call if you are not going to be understanding?! They told me they were cancelling my appt and offered a new appt over a month out. It's just such a bummer cause I wanted so long to get that appt and they couldn't just be a tiny bit more understanding. I would imagine they still have the duration of the appt open so why cancel it completely... just shorten it? read more

I have been seeing dr. Rau for many years, I had two cats, it used to be good service; however recently it was impossible to get an appointment. Whenever my cat had health issues, the admin persons at Benicia Cat Clinic were very rude, they sad than no appointments were available and that I should see emergency clinic. They didn't offer any help and when I asked if I should find a different vet, the admin person said that maybe I should. I asked them to tell doctor to call me but the dr. Rau didn't call back. Fred got into a catfight a couple of weeks ago. Both of our cats are like my wife and I, which means they're not very good at physical fights. We'd all much rather sit down and try to discuss our differences. Apparently whomever Fred got into a philosophical argument with eventually resorted to biting and scratching. Fred came home 48 hours later with a nasty infection on his neck. Apparently the other asshole had gone for the jugular and barely missed. I being the Googlemaster did some searching and my wife and I agreed to watch the cat that evening. By next morning, however, it was clear there was something really wrong with him as the infection was seeping and Fred was in a state of total depression. We tried the Animal Clinic of Benicia but they couldn't take him. We figured we'd give Benicia Cat Clinic a shot and they were happy to help us then and there, keeping Fred overnight and operating on him the next day. I was scared shitless when I heard the word "operation", figuring this was gonna go into four digits... Well it turns out that not only is the staff super friendly and the vet is awesome, but their prices are way more "pet owner friendly" than the Animal Clinic down the street. In short, we found a new vet for our kitties, Fred and Jack! An added bonus is that they deal exclusively with cats, so if our cats need to stay there for some reason they don't get the additional stress of being in a cage next to a mean dog. They literally DO NOT answer a very basic question without a 75.00 consult. Many times I paid it for a two minute consult. But this was not what broke the camels back with me! I've called a few times to try and get my new kittens in for a check up and they are MONTHS out, ( said due to Covid. Most probably understaffed.) How do they expect their regular customers to wait out that long to be seen? What if your cat is sick? " Oh sorry, we can't see you for weeks". When you DO call, the front staff have terrible manners, who are very short on the phone and very unprofessional. Finally on my third call in hopes of an opening, I told them I guess I'll have to find a new place to go. (They don't show they really care.It's more like, Bye Felicia!) I gave it a couple more weeks, called and Cathleen said again they are months out for spaying my kitten , then had the NERVE to say, "didn't you FIRE us? So NO, no appt is available for you." WOW! Who says that to someone? Honestly, go find a place where the Dr. and front desk conducts themselves with a nice manner and that your loyalty means something at all. Here, YOU'RE just a number and a dollar sign. If they are so busy, they need to get more staff and provide people an adequate time and date for an appointment! NOT THREE MONTHS OUT!!Last and definitely not least, even when I had to put my cat my down, it was a very sterile and cold experience. Find a place that's not "too busy" to see you. read more

Went here for years. They used to be a solid place, close by our house. Over the past few years the number of vets have gone from 3 down to one, Dr. Rau. Rau is a solid vet, but because she's the only one I'm never able to bring my cats in without waiting 2-3 weeks. So if my cat becomes ill, or is, say, limping, I'm told by the rude receptionist, "We can't fit you in for 2 weeks. Go to Sage Emergency Vet." So Cat Clinic has become basically only available for wellness exams where they administer endless vaccines and hard sell you $800 dental cleanings. I guess this is more profitable for Rau than hiring another vet to help out. Additionally, what was once a friendly stable group of workers is now an ever-revolving door of new people who are less and less concerned with customer service. read more

I'm sorry but cannot give 5 stars to Dr. Brisbin. I had mentioned how my cat wasn't jumping around anymore and I'd wanted him to look at other tests. Because she was angry in her visits, she was put on Prozac but now that she's passed away at only 2 years old, I have to think she really was in pain n it may not have been her normal personality at the vet's office. I kept mentioning how she wasn't regaining muscle tone in the lower back and hips area but kept being told she was otherwise healthy and that it may be just her personality. I had to go away with my boyfriend (now fiancé) and when I got back that evening I found her dead. A neighbor who's got cats of her own and has extensive experience with cats and other animals had checked in with my cat that afternoon. I was thankful my fiancé was there as it would have been much more difficult facing this on my own to find my cat dead. I had one of my geriatric cats teeth cleaned recently and ended up also having a tooth removal. Everything they said they'd do is what they did. I have been taking my cats to Dr. Rau for 7 years and have always been happy with the care they receive there. She is extremely knowledgeable and takes the time to answer any questions I might have. Last month was the first time that I used her cat boarding services and I was really impressed. One of my cats has some form of brain damage making her "special needs" and I didn't want to leave her with my father as she can be unpredictable at times. She was there for 10 days and came home and settled in like she had never left. The staff all mentioned how they had played with her, Alaina mentioned how she drools when you pet her and how much she purred--they obviously had spent time with her. Dr. Rau even called me the next day to recommend a possible change in her diet. It hadn't occurred to me that she would be under the care of a doctor while being boarded--definitely an advantage for my "dingus cat". The price was also very reasonable and she was updated on her vaccinations while she was there. read more

Earlier this week Dr. Morris put our beloved torty Isabelle to sleep. I have had other cats put to sleep at the end of their lives (specifically at Pinole Pet Hospital), and previous to now believed the process was handled well. Having now experienced the Benicia Cat Clinic's toughest job, and how very beautifully they handled it, I feel compelled to comment. Isabelle was an older cat; when you've had a cat all its life you know when something isn't quite right, even if it's not glaringly obvious. Without going into details, it was clear Isabelle needed to take the dreaded ride to the vet; by the end of the day Dr. Morris called to tell us that she was in stage four kidney failure, and shared Isabelle's "numbers" last week, compared to her visit in April. She provided options (24/7 IV care at a special clinic, likely to cost thousands being the most impossible) but given Isabelle's advanced age and the unlikely chance the failure could be reversed, we discussed having a vet come to the house for euthanasia. Over the 4th of July weekend that proved quite problematic (and again, prohibitively expensive), so we chose to keep her with us, tending to her and giving her as much love and care as she could endure. It was clear over the weekend that she was sliding, so we had that time to prepare ourselves and on Monday the Clinic found a time for us. Dr. Morris spoke with us at length, perhaps reassuring herself as much as us that it was time. She described precisely what she would be doing, how Isabelle would be feeling and reacting, and left us for as long as we wished in a very comfortable (and comforting) sitting room where we could say our goodbyes. (At Pinole Pet Hospital both euthanasia's were done in the exam room, with the cats on the metal table; two shots and boom -- I was ushered out within 15 minutes.) Instead of two shots Dr. Morris put in a catheter and then administered the meds, asking us each time if we were ready. She could not have been more thoughtful, gentle, or kind, to us and to Isabelle. I have no doubt that Isabelle passed in peace, with no pain and very little tension. In all the sad process took 75 minutes, but we never felt rushed, or in any way as though we were inconveniencing anyone at the Clinic. Isabelle's sister Stella is also an old lady, and while we know her time too will come, we are greatly comforted by knowing that Benicia Cat Clinic will be there to help us. I'm new to the area and brought my cat in for a check-up and to get an old prescription renewed. This was my first visit to this vet office and although I saw good reviews on Yelp I am always apprehensive about going to a vet who tries to sell you unnecessary services and products. The waiting area was quiet and there was a DVD playing on the TV with birds singing, which had my cat very intrigued. As any cat owner knows, sitting in a waiting room with a hyperactive dog running around makes going to the vet an extremely stressful event for the cat. It was nice not having any of that here. After a few minutes I was called back to an examination room and Dr. Rau's assistant (vet tech?) asked me a few background questions and made notes. Then Dr. Rau came in and addressed every question I had and also did a thorough examination. I really like the fact that she took her time to look him over and wasn't in a hurry to get him seen and move on. She asked a lot of thoughtful questions and really was interested in my cat's lifestyle, activity level, and grooming habits. All-in-all I would definitely recommend this office to any of my friends and family. I will definitely be returning for future needs. It's hard to write about this, because I had to take my sweet boy in to be put down. Doctor Brisbin was just wonderful. Very very kind and compassionate. He told it like it was when I brought Lucas in to get checked out originally- spent a good 20 minutes with us, it seemed like, really carefully looking my kitty over. When I brought Lucas in to put him down, it was done in a nice room. Lucas relaxed very quickly. The shot to sedate him was administered well and kindly- Lucas didn't even flinch. When he was knocked out, Doctor Brisbin administered the pink euth shot, while apologizing to my cat for not having been able to do more for him. All of the staff were wonderful, kind, and compassionate. From start to finish, they made both my cat and I feel as safe and comfortable as possible. It was a very gentle end to my beloved kitty's life, and I could not have asked for more. Thank you all. read more

What really got me was that they took the time to sit and talk with me about what was wrong with my cat - which was pretty serious. I can't really speak to prices or such as I was too freaked out to think about anything other than getting my cat better. We just left Sage emergency clinic last night with a prescription for a urinary tract food for our cat. It is a prescription for food, not treatment, not medicine, we are not talking opioids here. . We called the cat clinic (yes our cat has been there in the past) and they refuse to sell us the cat food unless we pay for an office visit. The cat just left the emergency clinic. We offered to have the records sent over to the cat clinic, they refuse. All we want is to buy some cat food and we have the prescription, it is not rocket science. They were nice on the phone, some one just canceled so they got me in right away. There office wasn't busy and I was put into a room right a way no wait. That was nice. Doctor Came in quick. Not sure if she identified herself or not. She proceeded to examine my girl. Right away she started talking about this treatment and that treatment, x-rays, ect doc. Asked if I was ok with it." My response was " no" and asked for a estimate. The doctor came back with over $1000 in test she wanted to do! She had no idea what was wrong that was the reason for the test. All the test are up front payment, we're in a pandemic still, I just went back to work I don't have $1100 cash, I could do payments but NO they only do up font payments, because " no one takes payments". I understand that test need to be done but why not start with the $150 blood test and go from there ? "No " all or nothing! I was asked to leave when I questioned her. I did say I had a problem with the greed! I could make payment. Plus I did nothing to disrespect your front desk people only the doctor! i dont understand why people don't have any humanities! And take advantage of people when they are in a crisis. It would not cost me that much if I went to the hospital. I wasn't asking for the treatment for free. Benicia Cat Clinic is like the Stanford Hospital of quality feline care (without the bankrupting costs of a Stanford). We have three cats and we have brought them to Benicia Cat Clinic for everything from routine check ups to surgery. Everyone there- veterinarians, vet techs, reception and the other patient families in the waiting room- are all "cat people" and truly love and understand cats. Although we love dogs too, we appreciate that BCC only sees cats so you don't have to bring your already stressed and ill cat into a waiting room full of barking dogs. In fact the waiting area is always peaceful and subdued while we're there and they usually have a DVD playing on a TV of birds in trees or fish swimming. One telling story was when Dr. Rau gave one of our cats a pill. After she popped it in his mouth she bent down and gently kissed him on the nose. My wife and I found that rather charming. I later found out that when you pill a cat the normal procedure is to blow on the cat's nose. That stimulates the cat to lick its nose which facilitates swallowing the pill. Dr. Rau's technique on the other hand showed her particular affection for her patients. Dr. Rau is an excellent vet with a calming and reassuring demeanor and a mastery of cat health needs. Dr. Brisbin is a very gentle man and a true cat lover. He recommends cautious care and is expert in his assessments. Both doctors have taken time to even consult with us via the phone when we were unsure about a situation and they make follow up calls anytime our cats have received emergency care at after-hours clinics. The vet techs and reception staff have always been helpful, professional, courteous and knowledgeable. The techs are sweet with the cats and good at getting them to calm down in the exam room. We get email and text reminders about appointments and the office staff is always helpful on the phone. While by no means cheap, BCC is not crippling in its costs and we don't experience a lot of the "upsell" for pricey treatments that many vets are sometimes accused of. The only possible drawback, if you could call it that, is that BCC is appointment only and usually pretty booked up, so its generally not an option for emergency type care. That being said, I have been able to call at times and have them see one of our guys that same day. If you are a cat parent in the So. Napa/ Solano/ Contra Costa area, I'd highly recommend Benicia Cat Clinic. read more

Dr. Brisbin was clearly an expert with cats. He handled Jilly with care, and even though she is very skittish, she seemed to be quite at ease with him. He offered numerous suggestions on her diet and litter box issues. I've taken my fur babies here ever since moving to Benicia 2 years ago. All the vets are excellent in treating my fur babies regardless of whether the kids are sick or just needing an annual exam. The vet techs have always been gentle when handling the kids as well. I have one cat who absolutely does NOT care for men, yet once he came in contact with one of the male bet techs, he instantly warmed up to him! I would never have believed it had I not seen it with my own eyes! The front office staff are always courteous as well. So although the rates here are a bit pricey, the service they provide and the ease/comfort extended to my fur kids makes it well worth the cost. Our cat, Kupo, died recently and we adopted two kittens as playmates for our cat Bear. Unfortunately, they have URIs and we decided to take them over to be seen and have wellness exams at Benicia Cat Clinic. My husband, made an appointment for Tuesday at 4:30 (yeah, I even have a thing to prove it). My little kittens in carrier and I arrived for the appointment. Natalia had never heard of the appointment. Natalia pointed at Cathleen, "I'll be in surgery. Cathleen, you check them in." Cathleen had never seen me, but I've been a customer for 6 years, and I deserve respect. Since she took my name and Leroy Clark's phone call, and since she had a half-hour of looking over cat food, and came up to me. She said, "I am very sorry, you are not on the schedule. One of my openings is on Wednesday at 3 p.m." "Not for me is not," I said. (I suffered a stroke, and I talk with difficulty and Wednesdays are my speech therapy day.) Cathleen did not talk to the vet to see if something could be worked out since I was already there with the kittens. She seemed like it would be no big deal for me just to come back another time. I lived in SF for a long time and took my cat to the SPCA. My cat was my best friend. Last week, I put him to sleep with the help of Benicia Cat Clinic. For a bit of background. My cat was 17, he played fetch, followed me everywhere I went, and never left my side. I am 6'2" and a grown man, and I cried hysterically throughout the process. The vet (I don't know his name, nice older gentleman) was SO empathetic and kind. He made one of the worst experiences of my life bearable. When I can, I will go back and thank him and his staff in person. We had been there a year before and were happy with the service. The fact that the vet said it was 'OK' for me to put my cat to sleep seems silly, but it made all the difference in the world. I called because there was something going on with my cat. My regular vet said they couldn't​ see him for a week and seemed to be okay with that booking an appt a week out. I realized that might not be the best decision for him and called Benicia Cat Clinic. They also couldn't​ see him quickly and offered to put me on a waiting list. The sweet lady that answered the phone encouraged me to find a place to see him sooner suggesting several places for me to call. I did get an appt at another vet. Because​ of the amazing service, I scheduled an appt out with advance notice to get my cats shots up​ to​o date​ and for a check up. Dr. Rau handled my anxious and unhappy cat very well and I was surprised at how well behaved he was compared to the other vet where he was growling and snarling. My family started taking their cats here after they found out that their local vet in Vallejo declaws cats and docks puppy tails (widely considered unnecessary and inhumane practices by humane organizations). The vets at Benicia Cat Clinic have been absolutely wonderful to my family's cats. They helped our older, former stray with dental extractions - making sure to only remove those that were causing her discomfort or were a risk to her health - vastly improving her quality of life. They are also helping to treat my sister's kitten who has horrible skin, UTI and other problems. They're helpful, cat-loving and effective - everything you want your cat vet to be! Edit: I have since taken my two new cats here and LOVED working with Dr. Rau and the rest of the staff. They were patient and gentle, using low-stress handling that kept our cats comfortable. I love Dr. Brisban, no matter where I live in the Bay he's my Man. He is compassionate, gentle, kind and loving. He goes out his way with an adept thoroughness. My boy runs around like he's home with no fear or shyness which is unusual for unfamiliar surroundings - he is extremely comfortable. read more

We used to go here all the time. But the last time we went here a few years ago the staff was bizarrely rude and judgmental. And this week my husband went there (recovering from serious surgery) and again the staff was mind boggling rude. So sad. I don't know if it's still the same awesome ver who was there from 2012-on and got us through some hard times with some cats. Or someone else. But your staff is rude and judgmental for no reason and perhaps maybe snobbish. It felt like being back in grade school and they decide if you are in or out and get to see the dr or not. It's cruel rude and weird. You are losing tons of money after the last rude event we found another vet who ended up seeing us through thousands in vet bills due to a health issue. But due to your rudeness then you lost us. And now my husband remembering the kindness of the vet from 2012 (he never saw the vet this time) and I are sure to never go back. So hiring rude jerks and treating customers like aggravations when there is no one to witness (guessing they are sweet as pie when the dr can see them) --it's losing you major dollars. They need an attitude adjustment and customer service training. And they need to get some empathy and kindness as well. read more

My kitties have been going to Benicia Cat Clinic since we moved to the North/East Bay area 2.5 years ago. Through annual check-ups and more immediate and major health concerns, the Benicia Cat Clinic team has always treated us well, with very accurate estimates and with consideration for my budget. I have had the privilege of seeing Dr. Rau, Dr. Morris, and Dr. Brisbin, and I would recommend all of them to anyone with a cat in the area.
