We had a disappointing hibachi experience this afternoon. The initial service was slow and inattentive like a beer was brought and we had to find our own glass to pour it in. We weren't asked about refills until an hour later. It took 20 minutes after soup to have the chef arrive. Our chef was friendly but not very skilled - he dropped his spatula on the floor and had to flag down the server to get him a clean one. Later he got egg shell in the egg and had to fish it out. His tricks failed multiple times. Just a rough experience. On top of that, my chicken was extremely tough and inedible - just poor quality. DONT WASTE YOUR TIME Reservation doesn't count for anything and staff is rude!!! I called the number on Google to make a reservation at 7:30. We arrived at 7:20 after receiving a text message saying our table was ready. After asking about it for the first time they said 10-15min and gave us a vibrating disc, the second time they said we were 3rd, and the third time they said that they do not do reservations but we were next and still made us wait 10min longer until we decided to leave (after a total wait of 1 1/2 hour WITH RESERVATION!!) The guy "Gary" was very rude and told us that we could keep waiting or leave and they said that we were in the list for the reservation but then they said that they don't do reservations AND THEN he denied saying that they don't do reservations. They did not apologize for the inconvenience or offer anything while we waited for over an hour. They instead gave us an attitude and told us to wait or leave after giving us three different answers and with an attitude. This was a reservation I made for my mother birthday and they ruined the night and we had to pay cancellation fees on the rest of our plans to not even eat there. I have to mention that we asked calmly many times until they started giving us an attitude and raising their voice at us. During this night we saw at least three more bad reviews appear after we posted ours on Google and all of them said the same thing about the wait and the rudeness. I made the reservation 3 weeks prior to my birthday when we were planing to celebrate in this Benihana location again. And I had 14 people RSVPed. OpenTable only gave me 10 people maximum option when making reservation online, so I picked 10 and left comment saying that "I actually had 14 coming, please contact me if needed." Fast forward. There came to 30 mins before my party's arrival. The host person called me blaming me for putting in a "wrong" party size, as if it were my fault that they didn't notice my comment regarding the actual party size, as if they were so busy and my "wrongdoing" was creating big burden to their smooth business flow. I simply replied "but you are the one calling me to confirm the reservation only 30 mins before with the fact that I made the reservation three weeks ago." 5 seconds silence. Then the host person continued, "since you have 14 people, we will have to seat whoever can't fit in one table to another one!" With a super annoyed, unpleasant tone. I was like, wow. Just. Wow. And guess what. It's Thursday night plus dinner rush time at 6:45pm. When we were seated as they requested "all of the party to present for a table," there were only five tables (four teppanyaki+1 regular table) with customers, which contributed less than half of the capacity! More than half of the establishment was clean and empty like Nara's streets during pandemic! If I was still wondering why the business sucked like that on a Thursday dinner rush at such a popular location. I am not anymore. Celebrating my birthday in Benihana started back in 2012 and I have managed to stick to it every year. This downtown location is convenient to most of my party. I've ordered from and dined at this restaurant twice, mainly because it's close to where I live. Out of those visits, the food was only decent once. Unfortunately, today's experience was terrible. I tried the four courses, and the main dish the shrimp was especially disappointing. Overall, the food is consistently below expectations, and for some reason, the onion soup is always lukewarm. First off, Seven our server did a fabulous job in serving us. He explained to us about how the chefs at Benihana prepare the entrees. We found him prompt, friendly, and executed his duties precisely. He deserves an A+. Our chef, Rafael prepared a delicious entree for us. Being a Benihana chef, Rafael understood how to maneuver his cooking tools perfectly. He knew how to have fun with the eggs. I ordered the Seafood Diablo. It tasted delicious. For his birthday, Joseph ordered the Rocky's Choice. He said he liked it. I always liked looking at the decor at Benihana. It reminded me of Tanaka of Tokyo out in Honolulu, HI. Being a Japanese themed chain restaurant, it featured a large dog statue near the back. That gave Benihana more character. Come to Benihana. One of my colleagues received the wrong meat option, but it was quickly rectified. When it came time to pay they spent a long time trying to figure out processing the gift card we had but they got that done. My husband came for a date night tonight and decided to sit in the bar/lounge area. We had a reservation and were sat down promptly but that was the only fast thing about the night. We each ordered the $39 taste of Benihana and I guess the cheap price is what costed us to be here for almost 2 hours. It took 40 minutes to receive our starter soup and drinks. Another 20 minutes to receive our appetizer and remind the wait staff that we hadn't received our salad. Upon receiving our entree, the food was cold and had to call the waiter and let them know the situation. The food was reheated and even then it wasn't hot. At this point I was already hangry from waiting too long that I decided to eat the food. Food was a 4/10. Not sure when I'll decide to come back to this location after our experience tonight. Benihana is a special place to me. My dad and I went to my hometown location for 23 separate birthday dinners over the years, I had my sweet 16 there, and when my partner surprised me for my birthday this year with a Benihana dinner here in Chicago, I was so excited! This location is right next to Water Tower Place, so parking will be your typical deep downtown experience. This location is large with many tables. There is no "view", and it's not the most aesthetically enjoyable location. We had a 5pm reservation and were seated with a family of six (four young kids). If you want control of your entire experience and night, this type of seating is likely not for you. Our server, Parker, was friendly, although a little soft spoken for how loud the environment is. I'm sure because of the bar, the wait after we ordered drinks before we got those drinks and again before dinner was started was significant. It is always nice to slow down and fully enjoy an experience, but this was a couple hour endeavor for us so be mindful if you're on a time crunch. We shared sake and it was delicious. No complaints and served nicely. I ordered Rocky's choice which comes with steak and chicken. Everything was cooked perfect. My partner had Benihana special, he said his lobster was amazing and his steak also cooked perfect. Our chef was good but not incredibly invested. I really tried but the table vibes were off a little so it wasn't as engaging or energetic as it could have been. But the food was all incredible and one table experience wouldn't prevent me from coming back. I do think in a place like Chicago, with so many incredible and impressive dinner experience options, the experience here was not remarkable. It will be a memorable night for my personal story and celebration that night, but not because Benihana was memorable, and it's definitely a "special event" type of restaurant to me.
