This was a complete breakdown of the dining experience--an absolute travesty for the Benihana brand and, frankly, embarrassing for a restaurant operating in Coral Gables. We arrived at 7:25 p.m. for a 7:30 reservation and were immediately told the wait would be another 20-30 minutes. Annoying, but we dine out enough to understand that restaurants get backed up, especially on a Saturday night. While waiting at the bar, however, it became obvious that something was very wrong. The surroundings were unkempt. Boxes were exposed around the bar, dirty glasses were piled on the counter, the bar itself was sticky, and the floors were filthy. Even more telling were the customers repeatedly getting up from their tables and coming to the bar trying to get drinks they had ordered 30+ minutes earlier. We watched at least three different people do this, all visibly frustrated. At that point, I started reading the reviews for this location. I wish I had done that before making the reservation. What we were witnessing clearly wasn't an isolated bad night. After we'd already waited 30 minutes, I asked what was causing the delay and was told that the "corporate system was overbooking the restaurant." If this were simply a technical glitch creating an unusually difficult night, I could have some sympathy. But reviews going back months describe many of the same problems. Meanwhile, tables weren't being turned. Dirty, empty tables sat uncleared while customers with reservations continued waiting. We were finally seated well over an hour after our reservation time, closer to 90 minutes after arriving. Once seated, things somehow got worse. The seats were literally taped together, the walls were dirty, and there was some sort of gross residue on my plate. Had I not been with five other people, I would have left. We ordered our food along with our drinks immediately, hoping to speed things up. It didn't matter. We waited nearly another hour for a chef to arrive at the table. Even water and lemonade took so long that, after about 30 minutes, we eventually got up ourselves to try to get our drinks. The table next to us told us they had been seated right away but waited 1 hour and 45 minutes for their chef. We repeatedly expressed our frustration to management, but instead of taking ownership of what was happening, the response felt defensive. The staff themselves seemed to be at the mercy of the conditions, and I genuinely felt bad for them. They were the ones absorbing the frustration of an entire restaurant full of unhappy customers while the operation around them appeared to be completely failing. And the cleanliness was unacceptable. The dining room was dirty, the bathrooms were inexplicably gross, and the overall condition of the restaurant was shocking. Then, around 10:45 p.m.--while our main course was still being cooked--I had to leave the table to retrieve my car because valet closed at 11:00. Had I not done so, I was told the car would be kept overnight and I would be charged $30. By the time I returned, it was after 11 p.m. Everyone in our party was exhausted. What should have been a fun Saturday-night dinner had turned into nearly four hours spent in one of the most depressing restaurant environments I can remember. I hope Benihana corporate is paying attention to the reviews of this location, because I will be contacting them directly. As someone who loves dining out and cares deeply about Coral Gables, I found the entire experience unacceptable. I also genuinely feel for the employees who have to work under these conditions and take the brunt of customers' understandable frustration. This was not a bad night caused by an overbooking glitch. When we ordered, the waitress asked if we wanted flavored butter with our meal and made it seem like it was included (it was $6). First time at this restaurant after years of knowing it existed. Not quite a good experience with the service, in fact it needs to improve a lot. We waited around 50 mins in front of the grill, waiting for a cook to be assigned. We didn't get the soup that the waiter served first for the rest of the table. The chef did a good job cooking and the show and the food was good. The beer I ordered took a while to come. We came here on a Sunday night to celebrate a friend moving away and her birthday, and holy hot hell do I wish I had read the reviews first. 8 out of 10 of the most recent ones are all 1 or 2 stars. Take my review as a warning and nope out before you make the same mistake. Reservations were well in advanced for 7:30pm, and my friend called to specify the max for a table and were told 10 people, which meant limiting the invite, which was unfortunate. Most of our group arrived 15 minutes early. They were shown a table for 8 people and they said, don't worry, they can add two more chairs. We were told there was a table for 13 people upstairs that would be ready in half an hour, so we decided to wait. Half an hour came and went and the table still wasn't ready so we were seated at the clown car of a table. Some of our group is definitely on the curvier side, but this table had NO business being for 10 people of any size ever. It was elbow to elbow with people being on corners. Absolutely ridiculous. Turns out the people at the big table had only been sat a little earlier than us, and had made reservations the same day. I don't know why they didn't offer us that table with our reservation being made further out. Or even mentioned that they could accommodate a larger group. We ended up getting moved to two tables upstairs, which kind of defeats the purpose of going out to eat with a group of friends. Also having known that was going to be the situation, we would have invited more people to celebrate with us. Instead we were on two partially empty tables. Our server was messy and rushed, and our chef didn't show up til almost 9pm. We were all starving. Cocktails came. My husband's Old Fashioned was awful. I think the bartender didn't put the sugar cube in or use any demerara syrup, because it just tasted like straight whiskey with a little bit of cherry. No beautiful big ball of ice...just a bunch of cubes. The Mai Tai in the special cup was basically two sips and saccharine sweet. One of the tables ordered calamari and it looked like an overfried dried out nightmare and barely got eaten. First course out was cold soup. That got sent back by most of the group. Salad was good, but it's literally just iceberg lettuce and two cherry tomatoes, so I'm not exactly celebrating that mediocrity. The table I was on got the better straw when it came to the chef's. He was fast and attentive, and threw out the same, albeit, tired party tricks the franchise is known for. My friends at the other table noted the chef seemed very new and was way too casual with the group and made mistakes regarding allergies, which is really bad. She also came out 15 minutes before our chef and finished cooking about 10 minutes after us. I believe that may have been because of an allergy situation though. The main course itself was delicious. No faults there. Everything was cooked to perfection. I personally would have preferred waaaay less butter, but for one night, it's ok. Also, idk what they've done to the "Yum Yum" sauce, but it is not in fact "Yum Yum" and instead "Meh, OK." That shit used to be like liquid crack. It seemed a bit watered down and thin compared to what I remember. We didn't see our server much throughout our meal which meant no chance for refills. At the end when he finally did show up he was rushing us with the check. He didn't offer dessert or green tea and we had to ask for my husband's ice cream that comes with his entree. He said there's no desserts on the menu when we asked what other options there were, yet their site lists a banana tempura, amongst other things. I really want to give one star, but, personally I did enjoy my main and I think our chef did a good job. The restaurant though? TRASH. The prices? INSANE for the quality of what you're getting! It was always a fairly pricey night out, but now it's downright ludicrous. And also, almost everything I touched felt sticky. The bathroom walls...doors... the handle for the stair case. So damn gross. That whole place needs to be sprayed down with degreaser. Also, I'm sure there's gonna be a reply from whoever runs their Yelp asking me to reach out thru their website. Upon arriving on time for our 6:30 pm reservation we had to wait another 45 mins to actually get a table. ( oh okay patience was with us it was a busy day) so while waiting went stood at the bar and although we were there first the bartender decided to serve other guest first. We noticed and kept it moving ., our name finally got called for a table and headed upstairs . They sat us down on the first table upon entering and a big blow fan was aimed right at our table. After another 45-55 min wait while at the table the chef came. We are starving by now. Then he wants to do the whole bit of the erupting volcano and etc and we are looking at him like sir - please just cook the food it's almost 9:30. I asked for a coke to try to fill my belly and it was flat. At this point I was ready to go. Long story short we got all our food by a lil after 10:00pm and it was all cold because of the blown fan. Multiple emails were received confirming the reservation and the importance of arriving with the entire party on time, no problem on our end. We arrived early for our 1pm reservation. Everything was so disappointing. What was supposed to be an exciting occasion left everyone grumpy and disappointed. It was already practically dinner time by the time we left the restaurant. After probably a year since my last visit I had experienced the worse The worst dining experience I have ever had at a Miami restaurant -- and unfortunately, it happened during my daughter's16th birthday celebration with seven members of our family. For a restaurant built around the hibachi experience, this level of delay is simply unacceptable. To make matters even worse, the chef assigned to our table appeared shockingly inexperienced. The performance lacked energy, professionalism, and basic culinary execution. Several dishes were poorly cooked, and the overall experience felt amateur and disorganized from beginning to end. The condition of the restaurant itself was equally disappointing. The bathrooms were unpleasant, poorly maintained, and clearly neglected. I understand that on certain occasions restaurants become very busy but we had a reservation for 8:45pm and didn't get seated until 9:55pm. As soon as we walked the host welcomed us, we asked to be outside. We waited for 20 mins for anyone to pass by our table. Ugh such a bummer. My partner and I have birthdays near each other so we made a reservation and arrived 10 minutes before our booked time. We said in the reservation and at the check in calendar that we were celebrating birthdays. We were seated and waited 30 minutes before the manager came up and asked if anyone had taken our drink order. 10 more minutes after that someone brought waters. An hour into being at the restaurant, the manager brought the espresso martini my partner ordered. During the hour wait for our drinks, I went up to the bathroom - the women's room was actually scary. Toilet paper all over the ground, trash cans over flowing, and what I think was poop in one of the trash cans based on the overall disgusting smell. Probably should have left!! But sunk cost fallacy. Plus we were supposed to be celebrating birthdays! Juan was our chef, and he was incredible. He made great food. Our appetizer was ultimately comped for the long wait at the beginning of our meal. No birthday celebration. And fried rice costs $7.50 so... I won't be back and honestly, neither should you. read more

First time finally tasting Benihana and the famous garlic butter! Although, a bit pricey, the food did not disappoint and the service made the experience worth it. Our waitress was patient, helpful and informative with helping us navigate the menu. The space was really big in comparison to similar to other hibachi establishments, this had a very upscale vibe to it, which surprised me. I ordered the steak with fried rice (extra steak ;-)) cooked medium and the chef made it just right, perfect to reheat for leftovers later! This place is so bad. Save yourself the trip and your money. Service is awful. I've been here many times throughout the years and it was always great. I went about 2 weeks ago and words cannot explain how terrible it was. First, the soup was cold. Very disappointing because it's normally really good but I didn't mention it. Then I ordered a meal without shellfish and it came with shellfish. It wasn't until after I was eating it that I realized and stopped (Im allergic).... I told the server and she took it back and said they'd remake it. Then a manager came and sarcastically asked me if I "needed emergency". I said no and that I didn't want the meal back. They brought it anyways. I didn't touch it because I did not want it. The manager quickly boxed it and walked away. They put it on my bill anyways and I ended up paying for it. 100 dollars for a terrible meal and experience. I have never written a restaurant review before but I felt an obligation to do it because this place sucks. Never coming back. read more

Took 90 minutes for the chef to come. Zero hibachi show, despite there even being a birthday at the table. Chef just cooked the food and that's it. Forgot our rice, had to ask for it at the end. Restaurant was dingy and dirty. I love hibachi but wouldn't return here. read more
