I've been here a few times for lunch, work lunches, and happy hour. But last time (within the last week), tried this place for dinner and it was not the same. During the day, I don't know if the staff is different, but the servers are better trained and tend to their tables. We waited 30-45 mins to be seated and another 15-20 mins to get drinks and order. By the time the chef came to cook, we had all been waiting a good hour or so. The food is always good, I saw someone called it bland, I would beg to differ, I like the flavors (plus you can request extra sauces and spices to your liking). Also, at the end we were greeted by a manager and asked about our meal. Complained about the time wait and were given 10% off our check on the spot and also told about some online program they have for $30 birthday gift certificates and other promotions throughout the year. Worst Benihana experience I've ever had. I think our cook was new and didn't speak much English only Spanish. Per the menu the shrimp were not colossal and both shrimp and scallops were burned, over cooked and dried out. Asked for medium steak but some by the time it got to my plate less more on medium well side. Take a look in my photo. (It will be the one with food burnt' scallops and shrimp in it) Egg in rice was also burned (which I hate) Notified the waiter and they brought more scallops but I was over the whole experience by then. You would think they would attempt to give you half in the tab for serving such sub-par food for the price that they charge (which also just keeps going up) I could have bought my own steak, shrimp and rice to take home and burn for a $45 meal. We went to eat there yesterday and the food was bland. The salad dressing had a lemon taster to it which wasn't good. We got the steak and shrimp which the steak was bland, very little seasoning. Vegetables are only zucchini and onions which were good but not very much. The yum yum sauce was not bad (French dressing flavor). The help seemed to be rushing around with very little help from the managers. Took forever to get soups and salad came came when they started cooking. Oh man where to start. My husband and I decided to try Benihana in Dulles, VA for the first time after hearing great things, however the overall experience was extremely underwhelming and we will never go back. For starters, we were sat pretty quickly and our server was very nice and responsive. He took our order and then brought out the hibachi soup/salad (my favorite part). One look at the soup and I knew it wasn't going to be good. The soup was so greasy that you could see several pockets of oil floating on the top of the soup and it tasted like it def came from a can. So pretty much hands down worst onion soup and soup in general I've ever tried. I had hopes for the salad but the ginger dressing tasted sour and off so I didn't even attempt to take another bite. Disappointing. The chef comes out, and bless their heart I know they did the best that they could, but they weren't Japanese and during the first initial part where they swing their tools around, the chef dropped their tools maybe 4+ times and then finally stopped. However, we ordered teriyaki chicken and the meal itself was actually good (at this point our expectations were LOW). Overall, the experience was just very bizarre for a Japanese style restaurant. This was quite possibly the only hibachi restaurant I've ever been too that there was not ONE Japanese chef cooking on the hibachi grill. I'm all for equal opportunity, but I think there's an unsaid expectation that when you go to these types of restaurants, you want the full Japanese experience, which includes a Japanese chef. But maybe they all stay away from this place because of how Americanized it's become. Bottom line, save your money and disappointment and go somewhere else. Spending $55 just on food ($23 per meal + $4.50 upcharge for fried rice per person) at this place is just not something I can justify. read more

No host when we walked in the door and stood there for 5+ mins before being acknowledged, server took forever to acknowledge we were sat and would like some drinks, he wouldn't come back to table for long periods of time throughout the entire meal, took FOREVER for drinks from the bar, no bar tender (manager was running the bar which is probably the reason the drinks took so long). Alright check it. I haven't been to a Benihana in years. By years, I'm talking ever, at least to the best of my knowledge. Growing up it was such an odd place to go to... I mean when my family or I ever wanted Japanese food we go to a traditional restaurant, rather than this made for show, increase the price premium Japanese restaurant. I came here with a co-worker for their all you can eat sushi. It's $26.95, which is a little pricey, but I did eat my money's worth. All rolls aren't included, but you can pretty much order anything. Naturally the special ones with the expensive ingredients are excluded. It's rather confusing: they give you this sheet with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd columns. What you're supposed to do is mark down all the rolls you want them to bring out first, then 2nd, etc. What makes it confusing is that you don't know how much you can handle/how much you want them to make in the first round. I ended up checking only 2 rolls, when I could've checked as many as 4. Note: they don't bring out the 2nd round until you've completed ALL of the first; not even a single piece. Our waitress tried to explain it to us, and we honestly couldn't understand her. Rather frustrating. She even asked if I was Korean so she could explain it in Korean... yeah, that's a first for me. It was a slow night, so our rolls came out pretty fast. With rolls at around 10-12 bucks each, I needed to eat at least 3. I ate 5, and so I considered myself satisfied. read more

First, the positive: good service, great drinks. I definitely recommend the Sake Sangria, even if they are $7.50 each and the glasses are teeny tiny. My guess is that the drinks are awesome to cover up for the flavorless food. The food was mediocre at best, with zero (0) presentation. Valentine's Day rolled around last month and I decided to take my wife and our two year old to Benihana. Yes, there's probably about a half dozen other places I could have gone to between my home (Nokesville) and the Dulles Town Center but I figured, "Hey, let's go with the original"! Should have saved the miles on my car. Here's the lowdown on the experience: Front of House: Pitiful. The hostess was NOT "ready for prime time". We arrived at 7:45 for our 8:00 reservation. She told us it would be at least a half hour before we'd be able to be seated. At around 8:15 I heard them say a name that sounded like "Charles". When I asked if that was us, she just looked at me and, "You only arrived at 7:45 so, no, that's not your party" (can't type the attitude that line was delivered with). Wow. Really? Table Service: So-so. The chef was pleasant. Missed a few of his tricks but I don't think I've ever seen a hibachi chef nail everything. No fire, either. That's a let down. Waiter: A little off. I specifically asked him to get me whatever drink would be served in one of those funky Tiki mugs. He brings me a goofy, fruity pink cocktail...in a clear lowball glass! I asked once more but nothing was done. Wasn't about to make a federal case out of it...but without the funny mug I would have just had a beer. Food: Overpriced. I ordered the NY Strip for $32. They claim it's prime, aged beef...tasted like something out of the meat section at Safeway. Between the soup, salad and fried rice it does add up to quite a bit of food but, honestly, that price had more to do with the name on the door than the food on my plate. Overall: No matter where you are in Northern Virginia, chances are you've got at least one or two Japanese teppanyaki places around that you are aware of. My husband and I go to Japanese Steakhouse quite often and so we decided to give it a try for Vday (late on the review). It was good, I had Shrimp (since I am vegetarian) and my husband had steak and shrimp. The only thing I didnt like is that they put chicken in the fried rice but do not tell you that. I dont eat poultry so I was just upset a bit because I had to pick out every single piece and I could not enjoy my rice. I wish they would have told me or wrote it on the Vday menu. Went to Benihana for a birthday dinner last night. Called ahead and made the reservations for 7pm. Our group is seated and are excited to eat. 45 minutes later we are still waiting for a chef to come and cook for us even after noticing that tables that arrived after us were being served. Once the chef comes, no big deal, we can overlook the wait time. He starts cooking the food, everything is looking and tasting great. Towards the end of the cooking I notice there's a to-go container on the side that the chef is filling up with extra steak & chicken. We are all a little confused because one of our friends had yet to get the second part of her meal (she ordered the Benihana delight which is chicken and shrimp). The chef took her portion of chicken and added it to his to-go container!!!! Once this is called out the chef hurries to the back to grab more chicken and hurriedly cooks it for her. The "manager" - not sure if she was the actual manager - comes out and tells us that somehow one of our tickets got "lost" so the people in the back did not provide enough food on the trays for us. If you are a manager and are going to give a table that has already had not very good service an excuse, please make it a realistic one! There was enough food on the trays, the chef just forgot he hadn't served all of us what we ordered and proceeded to give himself the "leftovers." Not acceptable. Luckily, the manager reduced all of our bills by 50% so that was much appreciated. The food was good, nothing too different from other hibachi restaurants I've eaten at. It was one of the horrible restaurants I ever been to. On Valentine's day, we went there for dinner and our reservation was at 8.30 pm but we didn't get a table until 10.45 pm. Every time we asked when we were getting a table they had no answer and they were rude. There about 60 people were waiting for a table and all had a reservation. Once we got a table they didn't have enough food. We asked for a fork and it took about 30 mins. We were 10 people at the hibachi grill and the chef wasn't listening to want we wanted. A lady said no onion or mushroom but she got both. By the time we were finished with dinner, it was midnight. We supposed to meet friends for a drink but we had to cancel it. This experience was awful. Clearly my expectations were too high. The sushi we ordered at the bar before dinner took forever and was actually prepared as a to go order and sat out for at least 30 minutes prior to us questioning where our order was. Needless to say we didn't eat it. The server and manger couldn't figure out how to take the purchases off our tab correctly. It took forever to get our orders place and food started. The chef was less than impressive and would of rather us not talked the whole dinner. He also forget multiple things for the tables order and had to keep going back or getting people to bring extra items. The prices are crazy high (especially considering you have to pay extra to get rice with most meals)!! I really enjoy going to Japanese steak houses. But this is one that I will not be returning to. There are 3 within 5 miles from my house. I would rate the other two at 4 or 5 stars. I noticed right away that the prices are about 10% higher across the board. I figured ok, Dulles Town Center is prime real estate compared to the Countryside and Ashburn Farm shopping centers. They pay more for the building, and they charge more. I can live with that. I finished my first (and only) cocktail shortly before I ordered my food. The waitress who took my order didn't offer me another one. No one came by our table until the chef came to cook the food. I know the chef is not our server, but in the past, at the other JSH's, my chef has taken notice of my empty or almost empty glass, signaled to the server, and sped up the refill process. Not this time. The chef himself was very dull and boring compared to what I'm accustomed to. He didn't even toss shrimp at us after the food was cooked. I really can't remember another occasion, at any JSH, when they didn't do that. Even when the 2008 recession hit, they switched from shrimp to steamed rice in order to cut costs. I've come to view catching shrimp as a God given right when I go to a JSH. If I had brought one of the kids, they would have been so disappointed. The food itself was great. But as we ate, I was still never offered another drink. I decided not to push the issue because: 1) I wanted to see how long this would go on for. 2) As much as I wanted another drink, I was getting so aggravated that I didn't want to give them anymore of my money. (I still had plenty of water) 3) I expect your services to be offered to me. I don't want to chase you down to get them. I've experienced some instances at the other two JSH's where the chef was a little dull, or the waitress was a little slow, but never to the point of absolute neglect. And to have both of these problems occur together in the same trip is just unacceptable. I'm not the type who complains to management. I just tipped $5 on a $110 tab, and wrote a brief explanation. My husband and I love Benihana from our days back in Indiana. We used to celebrate my birthday by going there every year. The menu is extensive and while it is expensive, you will get a lot of food. I enjoy their onion soup course but do not love their salad/dressing. Our waiter at the Dulles location was a bit slow, but quick to remedy errors. To be real, I do understand that this is not the best Japanese hibachi grill around. Though I haven't been to any others in the area, I have been to plenty of others elsewhere, and they are usually better than this one in service, and food quality. That being said, this place isn't awful. Honestly, my wife and I go there at least twice a year because we're both signed up for the $30 off on your birthday deal. We go, do the meal, get our picture taken, we have a good time. I've never had a problem with the food there. I always get the steak and lobster, which is hard to mess up. I do feel like there could be a little more seasoning on both of these, but there is plenty of taste in the mustard sauce that I dip them in. Maybe I'm just being complacent, but I find the meal very enjoyable. The show actually gets a little old. That is, I don't find it annoying, but I'd be just as fine with out it. That being said, I like that they cook the meal right in front of me. It's unique. My wife and I went for the happy hour drink and sushi specials one afternoon. I was pretty happy with it, but the service was admittedly pretty bad. We made last minute reservations for a birthday party of 15; 2 tables next to each other. It was pretty slow for a Saturday night, but still had plenty of customers, mostly big parties. The food was your average hibachi, not really well seasoned but not horrible either. I ordered the filet and sea scallops - the filet was cooked well, but the scallops were overcooked. The fried rice was also overdone, with some pieces crunchy. However, it wasn't bad and sort of always expect mediocre food at the hibachi steakhouses. This was the first time that I had ever been to a Benihana; however, it is certainly not the first time I've experienced teppanyaki. I came here because of the overall rave reviews I hear about "the Benihana experience." All in all, Benihana PALES in comparison to the "mom and pop" Japanese steakhouses that I've been to. First off, the service at the place leaves much to be desired. We went in during the day on a Saturday - only three grills were fired up and the tables weren't even all that full. Definitely not busy. Still, we waited more than five minutes to be seated - there was no hostess present. And sure, five minutes may not seem like a long time, but when you have two hungry kids, five minutes is a lifetime. So that was strike one. Strike two was when it took an additional ten minutes to even put in our drink order. And the waitress that we had was absolutely terrible and rude. First, she wouldn't acknowledge my mother or father. She preferred to speak to me and get the orders from me, i.e. "What will they be drinking? And what will they have for lunch?" Really?! They speak perfect English and they're not mute - she just refused to deal with them. I just told her that she could ask them what they would like to eat as I did not make a habit of ordering food for my parents. By that point, we were beyond annoyed and I would've suggested leaving, but again, hungry kids. Strike three was the so-called "Benihana experience." WHAT experience? There was no enthusiasm, not fire display, and it wasn't until my daughter asked him for the third time if he could do a volcano that he even bothered to do one. He had to ask one of the busboys to bring him an onion. And we were disappointed with that. The main reason we take our kids to teppanyaki restaurants is because of the fire display and the "show." Benihana's volcano was barely steaming and when my daughter asked where the fire was, the chef replied with a curt "I don't do it like that." And the food? Nothing to write home about. I'm pretty sure I can make a better fried rice in my own kitchen (and I've never even tried). I ordered the Hibachi Scallops - they were poorly cooked, just barely consumable. The vegetable were plain, and their salad wasn't all that fresh. My mother got the Hibachi Salmon and said that it was good, but my father wasn't all that thrilled with the Hibachi Steak. And my kids barely touched their dishes. When I asked my oldest why she wasn't eating, she stated, "I don't like this food. The other place is better and there's fire." So that's that. My first (and ONLY) Benihana experience. It's not worth the hype and their food is definitely not worth the prices they ask for. This place is a bust. We come here quite often because my daughter LOVES this place; at least 4X a month. We've had most of the Chefs cook for us but by far Jonathan is the best cook at this location. We came to Benihana for our annual after Christmas dinner out...you know, to take a break from the turkey, ham, etc... I made a reservation (advise doing this with a large party). We got there and we were seated in a timely manner; we did have to wait for a bit for the "show" to start: don't get me wrong our drink order, the salad and soup came out promptly as well as our order being taken. We waited ...and I was beginning to feel some kind of way...Mommy was apparently hungry and got that look on her face . Then finally...Showtime! Our Chef, Ms. KENIA comes out and gets things rolling..most of us had the trio-steak, chicken & shrimp; my son had lobster and steak. Kenia prepared the food to perfection...and had personality to go along with it! All the food was flavorful..Mom went Gaga over the onions! (Really Mom?). But I have to say they were really good! We were all FULL by the time dessert came out and we had to go boxes! Kenia was a blast and when we come back I will ask for her again! When I finally got to my table they made me sit at a small individual table not even attached to the main counter. On top of everything, I waited 50 minutes for the chef to start cooking when two tables that sat down after me were already getting their food. So, this is an updated review from the original on 6/14. After my 1 star review recounting 2 issues in the past, the restaurant reached out and provided me with a gift card to use on my next visit. I went to the restaurant over the weekend and ordered the hibachi chicken to go. The hostess was friendly and offered excellent options on the offerings. I received my food hot and faster than expected. In terms of the food, once I got it home I did reheat and the taste was good. The vegetables were particularly tasty in that the cooked items were nice and crisp, even after reheating. The salad was eaten 24 hours later and the lettuce was fresh and crisp. I also received 3 bonus shrimp, which was nice. Despite prior issues, I will say this visit was way better than expected. I will most likely visit again the next time I am in the area. Unfortunately, I know longer work in the Dulles area, as I could see this dish being my go-to for lunch. read more

This review is just for the sushi. We went here for my father's birthday dinner, since he had the coupon. The sushi is pretty mediocre...I feel like a key part to sushi is that the rice is soft...and the rice here was definitely not fresh. Plus, the presentation of the sushi was really messy and not at all professional. They do, however have AWESOME happy hour specials (which I believe they started recently), that include half price sushi/sashimi and drink specials. So, it actually seems that it would be worth the pricing to come here for happy hour, even though the sushi really isn't that great. I remember when there was a Benihana in Georgetown and it was my all time favorite place for hibachi and sushi. But they closed down and I was so excited to find out they had one in Dulles Town Center. I came on a Saturday for lunch. There was hardly anybody there but we were seated and did not wait long until the chef came out. The food here is nothing comparable to the old Georgetown location. The salad dressing was bitter, the fried rice was hard, and the filet mignon was so bland. Even the dipping sauces could not save the food. Thank goodness they offered lunch prices on a Saturday; otherwise it would've been a total waste of money. Sakura in Mclean is a million times better! read more
