BEWARE OF THE CHICKEN FRIED RICE SCAM!! My family of 4 (2 adults, 2 kids) were asked if we wanted chicken fried rice after we ordered not knowing that we would be charged over $30 for this "up charge". We got our bill and asked the waitress about it and she said it was on the menu (upgrading to "chicken" fried rice). Maybe that's true - but don't ask people after they order and put their menus down, and then not verbally disclose the upcharge. At the least- the waitress should have said- would you like to upgrade your fried rice to chicken fried rice for $7.50 a person? What a ripoff!!! read more

My son wanted to go to Benihana, Maple Grove for his birthday. It was a last-minute choice. We were seated to a table all by ourselves around 7pm. First, they've outpriced themselves ridiculously. My son ordered a 1/2 carafe of sake - it was $29, I ordered a strawberry margherita - that was $18.50 in a somewhat small glass $54 for two drinks. My son wanted the wagyu ribeye $69 - okay, he'll probably never order it again. The land and sea is now $57.50 and the scallops are half the size they used to be. Our soup and salad were served promptly, then we had to wait about 30+ minutes for the chef to arrive. Of course, we always order the fried rice - used to be an extra $4.95 it's now $8.00 and he didn't fully cook the fried rice or add enough garlic butter or soy sauce, it was kind of tasteless. The pricey steak had good flavor but was a bit tough. I had the filet mignon which was very good. We've been to this location before, and the food just isn't quite topnotch. The chef seemed irritated, probably because we were the only order and he had to split the 20% surcharge ($29.70) with the busboys and wait staff. I imagine there is typically 2-3 groups so more $ to split. I did tip the waitress a bit more as she was great. The attention we received from the staff sans the chef was great. $194.28 for two people - crazy, that's not including the two cocktails. We'll never go back to the Maple Grove location. St. Louis Park has a better ambiance and the food is always superb. I don't mind spending $ on great service and food but for the $ one out of two doesn't cut it for me. read more

We typically love Benihana for the food and the experience. Last night we had the worst experience we have ever had in a restaurant. It was unbearably cold at our table, to the point that we could not take off our winter jackets and could see our breath! We were told it was cold everywhere. Our chef seemed irritated with us because we were uncomfortably cold and complained so he didn't do any of the "fun" hibachi tricks. He ignored us when we asked questions. My husband's food was cold in the middle and he didn't apologize or acknowledge him when he asked him to put it back on the grill to cook it through. We were not offered any discounts for terrible service or freezing temps and we were charged an automatic 20% tip. The restaurant should have been closed yesterday as it appeared the heat was not working. At a minimum, staff should have done a better job of apologizing and providing a fun experience. I have never wanted to eat and get out of a restaurant as much as I wanted to last night! read more

Absolute worst service! The chef was good but the lady at the register for check-in (not the younger lady but the older one) was mean, not understanding at all, rude, and was even faulting me the reservation was messed up. I originally made a reservation for 3, but wanted to add 2 additional people. i called to make sure that's ok first. I was told it's ok and they will fix my reservation to 5 people. Great! I came in and it was a madhouse. Luckily I got in front and stood there to checkin. The younger lady was on the phone so everyone was just waiting. Some people just cut in line without caring that there are others in front of them. After what seemed like 10 minutes, the older lady checked me in and i told her 5 people. She said it's 3 and they might not hv space. I told her I called and was told it's ok. She said to take a seat, so we waited 15 minutes and was taken to a table and they didn't hv enough seats because my reservation was supposed to be 3. So we had to wait again. I was told 5 mins but we waited for another 15 minutes and so I decided to go check. I asked the older lady and she was faulting me and arguing with me about my reservation. I told her had they told me they can't do 5, i wouldn't hv brought the extra 2 people. I couldn't believe she tried to argue with me and made it seem like it was my fault. What a joke. We finally got seated. Waited 15 minutes to get water, and another hour to get food cooked. The chef was great and the experience was good, but not showy enough. My nephew had a wonderful time! The food was good too, and the yummy sauce was tasty and went well with the entree. We got fried rice which added an extra $6 or $7 per person, which i thought was expensive. I got the Splash n Meadow, which also came with onion soup, a salad, green tea, and ice cream. I did not get any green tea though. The ice cream was extremely limited; they only had sorbet and vanilla. Not sure if I would return to this location again. It was literally the worst (the seating lady ruined it for us). read more

Imagine a Benihana virgin. I just never got around to it. Then Linda H. tells me to sign us up for the birthday Chef's Table and Basil had his 70th coming up. We shared with 2 other couples. First the chef bangs on the grill with a cleaver, cooks, cleans the grill and leaves. I loved the onion soup, especially on an overcast day. I enjoy a simple iceberg lettuce salad, the topping had an odd consistency, it seemed to be the dressing but it tasted good. Great shrimp appetizer and I loved the shrimp sauce. I had the teriyaki steak, so good and so tender. My favorite was the signature fried rice. So simple and one of the best I ever had. Got a couple of meals out of that. I loved seeing the eggs scrambled on the grill. I got a strawberry Japanese pop, but it was too sweet for me so I settled on a sprite. Basil ended the meal with a green tea ice cream. I can't wait to go back in April. read more

Manager was a very nasty woman. Warered down drinks for 12$? That's a negative. For a 300$ meal for 5, I figured we would have at least relieved a show we expect. Server forgot our salads and drink order. To top it off, it was my daughter's birthday and they told me " we might sing happy birthday". What you mean? You know, considering the cost of the meal. What an embarrassment on their part. Where was my talented, Japanese cook. Once again, the manager working on November 22 night shift, was a nasty, nasty woman. We showed up at 8:45 yesterday night an hour before closing time. We had amazing service from Lamar & Rynie. Food was absolutely amazing they were both super nice and they even took our picture. My best friend and I go out for hibachi pretty often and this was extraordinary . There was no lack in flavor. The customer service was one in a million. I will specifically drive to the Maple Grove location for them anytime if I'm looking for hibachi !!! I give this restaurant a 10 out of 10 experience but my only negative review is that we were not able to leave a tip after paying with our cards due to the restaurant having a service charge! In all honesty it was one of the most disappointing expensive and poor food quality dining experiences I have have had in a long time. Our steak was grossly overdone, shrimp and lobster tiny in size and ice cream desert extremely small. We ordered our steak rare to medium rare and it came well done. We mentioned it to our waitress and nothing was done or reduced in price! Yet you were brazen enough to add a nice tip to the bill automatically!! When I pay $51 per meal and pay over $545 for a diner for 6, I expect much better!! We will not return to this overpriced and under-portioned restaurant!! read more
