The Benihana experience is gone. I used to love going to this style restaurant. Sure it was pricy but this was like dinner theatre so it didn't matter. Those days have passed. The food is good and you still get to watch them cook, but there was no flare. The chef just cooked the food there was no engagement. They did the customary utensils flip and onion train but it was done with no soul. It felt like the chef needed to do x y and then z. Then in to the next. It was just food, it was not fun. In the end, I would save my money next time and go somewhere else where the staff is still excited to have a job and a talent and wants to be there. Poor experience read more

Benihana is an exhilarating experience! We went to celebrate my cousin's graduation, and had a wonder and FILLING time. They really give you a lot of food, which is great! They give these delicious sauces to enhance your hibachi-grilled foods. Sometimes they misunderstand your order, but be patient and they will make sure you leave satisfied! Great place for family and large group! Because someone can get the hibachi scallop, another the shrimp, then steak... and share hehe. The food is pretty rich as they're generous with the butter (especially that garlic butter for the fried rice... but I guess that's why it's so delicious haha)... but everything's good and cooked well (no tough steak here). I especially enjoyed the scallops and shrimp, and my parents said the steak had a good texture. Yakisoba is good too, but I think their rolls are meh for the price, since the filling is crab meat for like $12 ish. Hibachi is their special and as it also comes with soup and fried rice, it won't disappoint. (However, the soup wasn't that great, wish they just went back to their miso) Also, lunch special's where it's at. read more

Benihana has been a favorite for my kids since they were tiny. Always enjoy the food and entertainment. My son decided to celebrate his birthday there last night and we do not partake in the birthday club. Seems like this is a big draw for people, there were birthdays being celebrated at every table. When we arrived a bit early for our reservation, we were told to sit down and just as we were sitting someone called our name within about 30 seconds. Someone followed the hostess so we assumed it was someone else with the same name. A couple of minutes later the hostess returned to the lobby very visibly annoyed that we did not follow. That was an unfortunate way to set the mood for our celebration, especially given we were expecting to pay for a rather expensive meal. Upon seating things started out well. Sat with a great family, received our drinks, ordered our food. But then the chef arrived and began cooking and it became apparent this wasn't going to be the experience we have come to love and enjoy in the past. There was some flips of the cooking tools and the onion volcano. That was literally all. No communication or joking with the chef, literally not even a smile. Those of us that did not order fried rice did not receive our plain steamed rice. We were so full at the end of the meal we didn't bother to request it since it would be a moot point. Still worth mentioning since it was part of a 5-6 course meal. My husband also did not receive the ice cream that was included but we left that as well since he would just give to our kids and we were planning cake at home after our meal. The other family sitting with us reminded the server several times for drink refills, boxes for previous courses, and that there were multiple birthdays at our table. We also had to remind the server for our drink refills which you would've thought he would have brought when the other family reminded him of theirs. Overall, food we did receive was delicious. Just wish the service and presentation was consistent from table to table as it became glaringly obvious other tables were experiencing a different level of attention than we were. And sadly, this wasn't the experience my 12 yr old son had expected on the night of his birthday. I'm not sure if the restaurant is short staffed which I always want to allow grace for in these trying times. But since other tables seemed to experience something different entertainment wise we will probably be trying out another hibachi restaurant the next time we are looking for this type of meal. It makes me sad since we've always loved it. read more

I do not recommend this restaurant! The trouble started upon arrival on a cold winter evening. We were a large group and had reservations. Yet, we were made to wait for over 20 mins. Upon seating us, there was long wait before someone came around to get us a drink. The main reason one goes to Benihana is for the teppanyaki show. We got the chef who appeared to hate his job. No word, no standard teppanyaki flamboyance, no jokes! Total let down. We even requested him to do a small show but he didn't even acknowledge us and we were a table of 8 ! Only if the food was any good, it may have eased the disappointment. Total let down! read more

We recently had lunch at Benihana in Wheeling, Il. My husband loves sushi so we gave it a try. Once seated, we were told to scan their menu card with our cellphones. We did so. Our sushi was very good but when the bill arrived I could see immediately that they had increased each item we ordered by 20-25%!! I went back, looked at the menu again and compared it to the bill. Every item was bumped up by $1.00 to $3.00. When we inquired, the water acted confused and took the bill back to management. After about ten minutes he corrected our bill saying that he charged us "to go" prices. Why- I'll never know. We were seated at a table and dined in. Be careful if you eat here. This Benihana just cancelled my reservation when my we showed up, and they didn't have enough chefs. Had the reservation for over a week. Shouldn't have been a "surprise" to them that we were coming with exactly the number of people that we had booked on OpenTable read more

The reservation system is ignorant if you need to fill each table before you seat a reservation then come up with another system. The restaurant is in need of deep cleaning or better yet a remodel. Once seated we waited 15 min for 2 other groups to sit so that they could take all our orders at the same time Once the cook came with everyone seated he reviewed the orders but when he passed out the orders of sauté shrimp he passed them out evenly so we paid for 3 extra orders for the entire table. Salad dressing was to watered down Filet although cooked MR was not a prime cut and was very bland so we asked the cook to recook it with some garlic butter. Service was ok the cook was same ol same ol Not sure it's worth the money they charge for the over used place. Btw nobody spoke Japanese at this Japanese restaurant read more

One of the worst managers! Mr. Larry Is what he said his name was. We were a party of 10 with 2 kids..8 of us who also had kids arrived on time and this manager insisted to give us a table since the whole party of 10 was not there. I was so disappointed. I ordered a salad and instead of chicken I changed it out for shrimp. I picked it up to go, and when I got home and thee were six little shrimp in a little side container and they were , very salty and very over cooked, so much so that it was inedible and I had to throw them away. I got a full size salad and it was $30, what a waste of money. I called to complain and all the manager did was say sorry. I will never order from here again. read more

We had a reservation for 2 at 4:30p and were seated right away with two other couples. We ordered the Chicken and Rocky's Choice, which is steak and chicken. The soup and salad starters were so good, and the shrimp sample as well! The servers were all so courteous and attentive; our drinks were refilled immediately. Our chef was so funny and entertaining. I have to remember to bring some cash on our next visit to tip him personally. The food, the service, the experience, everything was a 10/10. THE WORST hibachi experience. Our cook was obviously not trained. He did not provide the excitement we are accustomed to getting during hibachi visits. He had -0 personality. The cook even LEFT the table mid-way through cooking meat and vegetables and did not return for several minutes (never happened before) and did not provide a full entree. The experience was bizarre and disjointed and not anything I've ever experienced. It was a COMPLETE disappointment with a bill that didn't come close to the mediocre experience. I could have gotten this at the local mall for A LOT LESS. Do yourself a favor, don't waste your money here! read more

I just visited a Benihana for the 1st time in Wheeling, IL I was excited to use my birthday voucher and a $100 Lettuce Entertain You gift certificate. I looked online and verified Bennihana's was in list of restaurants that I can use gift certificate. Our waiter & chef were great, food was ok, but when I paid a rude older Asian woman, who I was told was the manager, refused to honor my gift certificate!!!! She was very unfriendly and unhelpful. First and foremost, let me say the food was totally fine and our chef did a great job. Unfortunately, there were some other major issues here that stood out. First thing I did when I sat down was unwrapped my chopsticks and noticed a LOT of mold covering the chopsticks. Ok, no problem right? Well my mom, my brother and my girlfriend had the same issue. So we called over someone who swapped them out for us. Every pair we got after this was covered in mold. By the 4th pair, we called over the "manager" who told us this was not their fault and the fault of the supplier. Understandably so, however you should probably stop bringing them to us and throw out the whole batch! I looked around the restaurant and half the patrons were using these disgusting chopsticks yet management did nothing to stop this. I thought this was absolutely repulsive. In order to apologize this, the manager brought us a plate of tempura which definitely was not enough to make up for this occurrence in my opinion. Also, in the 90 minutes we were there, my water was NEVER refilled nor did our waiter even visit us once after taking our order. The next time we saw him was when we got our check. I walked over to where the water was and refilled my water and my families water multiple times. I have been going to this Benihana location for at least ten years but their absolute dismissal of something that I thought to be absolutely disgusting really ticked me off. I'll be taking my business to Tsukasa unless I am contacted on here and this awful dining experience is made up for. read more

Okay so for my for time/impression here it goes... 1-upon entry place looks nice and clean. 2- we go up to the hostess and we had a reservation, thus reservation taking needs improvements because when we got there they told us.. oh we need to clean I am sorry please wait! Bad bad 3- we got some sushi as appetizers which they were well presented and let me tell you, rice was talking apart, I am a sushi pro and this was a bad roll, we had to eat with forks because it was this bad. My daughters have always loved the theater and fun of coming here. This time, however, was a disappointing birthday experience for my daughter and her friends. The chef did do a very nice job with the knife skills and show. My steak was tough however and my daughter didn't even finish hers (a first). It was two hours for dinner for a bunch of 10 year olds. Not cool. Then, each of the kids was supposed to have gotten the Kabuki kids mugs, I even called to confirm this, but they said no just the birthday kid. Interesting dining experience that serves up Japanese cuisine made in front of you. Tables are usually communal but depending on how many guest you arrive with, you might be able to score your own personal table. I came here for a friends birthday and we were able to get our own personal table. The place wasn't as busy as we anticipated and the food chef came out promptly. The menu offers single plate options such as sushi but for unique dining experience order one of their several 5 or 6 course meals which include seafood, chicken, and other meat options. I tried the "Rocky's Choice" option. The six course meal included:Hibachi steak asterisk, chicken breast grilled,onion soup,fried rice, steamed onions, steamed shrimp appetizer, and a ice cream option for dessert. Heres the breakdown on the food: Steak was mediocre a bit on the chewy side but seasoned nicely. The vegetables were grilled decently and the steamed rice was appetizing. The onion soup was blend and I think it was my hunger decieving me into thinking it was at most decent. The shrimp was probably my favorite dish of all the entrees . The salad was definitely pre made and the dressing would have probably tasted better on a freshly made salad. (Theres just something about precut packaged salad that taste different from a freshly cut salad ). Overall the food preparation and presentation all added up to a cool dining experience. My friends had a great time and our chef entertained us while cooking by cracking jokes and performing little tricks. A couple who drinks ( 1 drink each) should expect to pay roughly 130 after tip. Defiantly on the pricer side, my recommendation would be to come here for the experience not the food. read more

I have been to Benihana before the one in Schaumburg. Excellent and food was tasty. I had a birthday coupon So I decided to try the one in Wheeling carry out. Should be the same right? Wrong! I called on a Thursday night and was told it would be 1 1/2 hours. Very rude and unprofessional hardy spoke English lady was surprised when I said ok. It was 7 and I would pick up at 8:30. Not too bad. She goes really? I said yes I would pick it up then. I came exactly at 8:30 and it was ready. Same very rude lady made me wait ten minutes even though it was sitting on the counter. Don't know how long it was sitting there. The 24 oz hibachi chicken rice looked like it was leftovers from tables. The chicken hibachi dinner was very dry and old. Three very small pieces of shrimp and the side order of noodles was smaller than portion size and dry. And the broth soup was cold. NEVER again at the Wheeling location! read more

A CHEF should know to season to give the customer a flavorful entree. Overall, the steak on the other enteees ordered was bland but the chicken entree was good. Ever since they closed the one in downtown Chicago, my friends started coming out here for what they call a "quarterly meeting". Luckily, I had the pleasure of being invited along when I used to live here, so now whenever I get stuck in the burbs for work, we arrange a meeting! The service is always great, even if all of the tricks are predictable. I almost always get the steak and shrimp, with the chicken fried rice. Everything tastes so good (probably all the salt and fat) that I end up stuffing myself until it hurts. The dipping sauces they provide are also really good. My special advice...don't go anywhere after. You will smell like a hot garlic meat grill. Not so cute. read more

I just ordered take out from here and the lady who is probably the manager had an attitude with me when it was their fault for ruining my order. They mess up my order so often when I order take out and I never have an attitude, and I compromise. I am allergic to shrimp and they gave me two shrimp fried rices when i ordered chicken fried rice. she was very unaccommodating and made me feel like it was my fault that they got my order wrong. I appreciate the man that is at the front desk for his kindness but the other lady needs to show more compassion towards her customers. read more
